If Music Could Talk Lyrics

Make sure!
Taking cover in the bunker tonight
Waiting for Bo Diddley's headlights
I feel alright
Gotta Fender Stratosphere
I can do anything tonight
It's in neon lights an' global rights
Frank? He's on the phone
There ain't no German girl outside
But who cares when its warm inside?
With music
Special mystery of music tragically
Exchanging slaves for majesties
Modern waves of tragedy
Packing a two piece colt pair of shoots
A shiny grey Mexican suit
The blue eyed traffic can sashay by
'Cause tonight the sailor boys have hit Shanghai
The kick-out traffic goes creaking by
I smash my glass and shout shanghai
My drummer friend comes shooting by
He said Errol Flynn will never die
Oh no! Who am I to question why?
And are you lonesome tonight
And do ya need a country cowboy
Who's just thin and tight in those
Br' bus depot jeans
With a squirt resistant stud stud
Hey stoner

Get over there in the spliff bunker one
Because London Bridge was sold somehow
But it was too old anyhow
When Uncle Sam has broken down
We'll make him down in old Japan
Say ye'

Well there ain't no better blend
Than Joe Ely and his Texas Men
Where the wind blows
I ain't seen none like that scenery
You can see from a bus if you pay the price

Wave my arms around
Flag one of those taxi's maybe
I saw a girl somewhere somehow
Forever sticks in my mind somehow
I've just got three lines
And a pair of two's
Like a lucky roll of dice that you
You cast

If Music Could Talk!
Which means
Whatever your mind can bring
Like the apple fell off the tree
Pah! Fell right on his head
Yeah many years ago

There was a man who said
I am a shaman
A voodoo shaman
Got in trouble so he's going out
Mixing up and Haiti! Oh!
And the crickets
Buddy Holly said it was
Br' br' yee'

If music could talk you know

I feel kinda lonely
Standing out on the floor
Of Electric Ladyland

'cause this is a good question Samson
Are you partly Arabic?

Chi man! Whatcho all about

I don't want to I can't hope to
Say it all in one go
Occasionally once or twice
A day I feel alive enough to say
Let's hear what the drummer man's
Got to say about
He said is it Errol Flynn's birthday or not?
Sept twelfth until October
If they pack two piece
Colt pair of shoots
We got the shiny grey Mexican suits
I'm just wasting a great big
Corporation and the entire fund
The girders of Wall Street
And the temples of money
And the high priests
Of the expense account
And I'm wasting the whole thing
I come down in Yamaha-ha
They make the best pianos-time to step-up

If Music Could Talk
  • The backing track to "If Music Could Talk" is in fact another one of the songs on the Sandinista! album: "Shepherd's Delight," which was recorded at Pluto Studios two months previously with producer Mikey Dread. The band decided to revisit the track, and singer Joe Strummer added a stream-of-consciousness set of lyrics about New York city, including a plethora of references to Joe Ely , Errol Flynn, singer Bo Diddley (whom The Clash had toured with in 1979), Buddy Holly, Jim Morrison and Elvis Presley's song "Are You Lonesome Tonight?"

There are also personal references to The Clash themselves, including the Electric Lady studios they had worked, lighting engineer Warren "Stoner" Steadman, and his own "spliffbunker," which was a nest-type contraption Strummer built in whichever studio the band were recording in out of flight cases where he would sit and write songs in peace whilst recording took place elsewhere in the studio.
  • Production tricks abound on this song, as they do throughout the album. In this case, Joe Strummer double-tracked his vocals, putting one track in the left channel and another in the right to create an all-encompassing sound. Gary Barnacle, session musician and longtime friend of the band, added jazzy saxophone interludes when the song was recorded in Wessex studios in August 1980.
  • As it's possible to tell from the backing track complexity, this never featured in The Clash's live set, probably because the band just wouldn't be able to do it justice in concert.

    Castles Made Of Sand
  • This is one of Hendrix' most autobiographical and personal songs. He hated talking about his past, and avoided it during press conferences and interviews.
  • Hendrix played all of the lead guitar parts backwards, then rewound the recording of the lead guitar parts to the song to get that effect you hear in the beginning and in the middle of the song.
  • Hendrix' mother was a Cherokee Indian, and in this song he identifies with his heritage as a Native American.
  • Hendrix read the words for this song as a poem instead of singing them.
  • The Red Hot Chili Peppers were all big fans of Jimi Hendrix and often perform this song live.

Skip To The Good Bit Lyrics

    Yo, yeah
    Check the rhyme and rhythm
    It’s nice and different
    Plus is bright and brilliant

Kinda how I like my women
    And that’s the right opinion
    Although at night I’m slipping
Win her never, ring her, now she thinks I’m a villian

See, I’m not festive, but I quite like presents
Don’t wanna die, but I quite like heaven
Wanna good place, but I don’t like waiting
Wanna go crazy, but I’m not patient

Wanna be smart, but I don’t like learning
I wanna be rich, but it takes time earning
Wanna be fit, but I don’t like running
Then I see you and I wish I done something

    I like your style
Been watching you for a while
    I said
    Oh yeah
    Let’s dance and then
Let’s Skip To The Good Bit. Oh!
Let’s skip to the good bit. Oh!

So, been here two days long
    Still not stepped that stone
    Still not moving on, on
    Now, let us go

    I will take control
    No more moving slow
    In this situation
    Hell yeah!

    I like your style
Been watching you for a while
    I said
    Oh yeah
    Let’s dance and then

Let’s skip to the good bit. Oh!
Let’s skip to the good bit. Oh!
Let’s skip to the good bit. Oh!

Yeah, we got that real vibe
We don’t know what we’re doing but it feels right
    Yeah, listen up, yo
Feeling alive is a good way to kill time.

    Check and we’re bubbling up
We came here with nothing but love, we stay easy
Yeah, and if trouble’s a must
You gotta stay till they pack up the club just to please me.

    I say,
Let’s skip to the good bit
    I say,
Let’s skip to the good bit
    I say,
Let’s skip to the good bit
Let’s skip to the good bit. Oh!
Let’s skip to the good bit
Let’s skip to the good bit
Let’s skip to the good bit
    Oh, oh, oh, oh

  • This song borrows the riff from EMF's 1991 hit "Unbelievable." Jordan "Rizzle" Stephens told The Sun: "It's a riff that's always been in both of our heads. We wanted to have one of those songs where you could just step on stage and be ready to go. I'm surprised no one has used that riff before."
  • The song was used in the launch trailer to promote the eleventh series of the BBC show, Strictly Come Dancing.
  • The music video finds the Rizzle Kicks duo going back to school. It co-stars the We're The Millers actor Will Poulter and also features Irish TV presenter Laura Whitmore as a party guest.
  • Stephens explained the song's meaning to Q magazine: "It's about being in a club and wanting to skip the whole dancing and small talk, and just have sex with the girl. To be fair, though, the girl actually says the lines."

    Perfect Situation Lyrics

    Perfect Situation
  • To write the songs for Make Believe, lead singer Rivers Cuomo put himself into seclusion and practiced complete celibacy in order to focus all his artistic energy on the lyrics. This song sounds like it was written to commemorate his suffrage for his art: "Just can't get no play" - a tribute to his conscious choice of celibacy during this time.
  • The video features actress Elisha Cuthbert as the lead singer of Weeze, a fictional predecessor to Weezer, who is eventually replaced by frontman Rivers Cuomo.
  • Lead singer Rivers Cuomo: "I sincerely hope that it's the last song I write about being frustrated and angry with myself for being shy, because I've written way too many of those songs already."
  • Drummer Pat Wilson: "It sounds like it could have been on The Green Album. I think of it as classic Weezer."
  • Weezer made some changes to this song when it was released as a single, adding the "Perfect Situation" background vocals near the end of the song. The band liked this version better than the original, and in the age of digital music, were able to replace the song on downloads of the album as well as new pressings of the CD.

    Put Your Two's Up
  • This track features The Wire actor Dominic West rapping about attracting people to the dance floor, steadily getting more drunk as the song continues. Jordan "Rizzle" Stephens told The Sun: "Having Dom in the studio was awesome. Not only did we have a proper laugh making the song, we were able to have some drinks, which was a good opportunity to get to know him and ask him a bucketload of questions."

West also appears on another Roaring 20s track, "That's Classic."
  • The song was co-produced and co-written by Rizzle Kicks' fellow Brighton resident Fatboy Slim (aka Norman Cook). The DJ previously produced their hit single "Mama Do The Hump."

"We're always happy to work with Norman, Stephens' Rizzle Kicks partner, Harley "Sylvester" Alexander-Sule told The Sun. "I think at first he took to us because we were Brighton boys, then I think he was just happy to be in the pop world again."

"It's a while since he put out an album but he has never lost his touch," Sylvester added. "He said, 'Why on earth do you want to work with me?' But growing up in Brighton, he was THE person who put that sound in our heads. His music was always there."

    Time Passages Lyrics

It was late in December, the sky turned to snow
All round the day was going down slow
Night like a river beginning to flow
I felt the beat of my mind go
    Drifting into Time Passages
Years go falling in the fading light
    Time passages
Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight

Well I'm not the kind to live in the past
The years run too short and the days too fast
The things you lean on are the things that don't last
Well it's just now and then my line gets cast into these
    Time passages
There's something back here that you left behind
    Oh time passages
Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight

Hear the echoes and feel yourself starting to turn
Don't know why you should feel
    That there's something to learn
It's just a game that you play

    Well the picture is changing
Now you're part of a crowd
    They're laughing at something
    And the music's loud
    A girl comes towards you
    You once used to know
    You reach out your hand
But you're all alone, in these
    Time passages
I know you're in there, you're just out of sight
    Time passages
Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight

  • Al Stewart didn't like this song. Here's what he said in an interview with acousticstorm.com: "I'll tell you a funny story. I have never really cared for that song I know it was a big hit and all that. It was just one of those things where the record company asked me to write something that sounded like "Year Of The Cat" and we ended up doing that. But I didn't realize truly how bad a song it was until one day I was in an elevator and I was listening to what I thought was Muzak. About 30 seconds went by, and I finally began to recognize it and said to myself, 'This sounds pretty horrible.' Then, horror of horrors, I heard my voice come on, it actually was the record. So I'm thinking, 'Oh my God what have I done, this is terrible!' Hopefully in the last 25 years I've redeemed myself with other things, but "Time Passages" has just never thrilled me."
  • Stewart wrote this with the guitarist Peter White, who started touring as a member of Stewart's band in 1975 and collaborated with him for the next 20 years. In June 2010, Peter told us: "Al and I wrote this song together in 1977. I had come up with the electric piano riff which starts the song and together we put together the verse and the chorus, based on that recurring riff. There was no attempt or even conversation about writing anything similar to 'Year Of The Cat' which Al wrote with Peter Wood. The words and melody were mostly from Al and the musical bed and instrumental breaks were mostly my ideas and even if Al says he doesn't like the song, he has been playing it onstage consistently for the last 32 years! As soon as we added the saxophone in the studio there were obvious comparisons to YOTC. (The saxophonist was Phil Kenzie, who had also played the stellar solo on YOTC). But to say that the song was written to satisfy the record company - that was an issue that never even came up! And yes I'm very proud of this song, which still gets radio airplay every day!" She was a girl from Birmingham
    She just had an abortion
She was a case of insanity
Her name was Pauline she lived in a tree

She was a no-one who killed her baby
She sent her letters from the country
    She was an animal
    She was a bloody disgrace

    Body I'm not an animal
    Body I'm not an animal

Dragged on a table in a factory
    Illegitimate place to be
In a packet in a lavatory
    Die little baby screaming

    Body screaming fucking bloody mess
Not an animal it's an abortion

    Body I'm not an animal
    Mummy I'm an abortion

    Throbbing squirm, gurgling bloody mess
    I'm not a discharge
I'm not a loss in protein
    I'm not a throbbing squirm

Ah! Fuck this and fuck that
Fuck it all tha fuck out of the fucking brat
She don't wanna a baby that looks like that

  • This song is about a schizophrenic woman named Pauline who used to stalk the Sex Pistols and was fanatical about them. She lived in a treehouse on the estate of "Nut-house." One time, the nurses couldn't get her down so she'd live up there for days.
  • John Lydon: "She turned up at my door once wearing a see-through plastic bag. She did the rounds in London and ended up at everybody's door. Like most insane people, she was very promiscuous. The fetus thing is what got me. She'd tell me about getting pregnant by the male nurses at the asylum or whatever."
  • In Daniel Rachel's The Art of Noise: Conversations with Great Songwriters, lead singer Lydon says this is about "the rage and passion and pain of both sides of the abortion issue."

    Inoculated City Lyrics

The soldier boy for his soldier's pay, obeys
The sergeant at arms, whatever he says
The sergeant will for his sergeant's pay, obey
The captains until his dying day
The captain will, for his captain's pay, obey
The general order of battle play
The generals bow to the government, obey the charge
    You must not relent

What of the neighbours and the prophets in bars?
What are they saying in our public bazaars?
We are tired of the tune, "you must not relent"

At every stroke of the bell in the tower, there goes
    Another boy from another side
The bulletins that steady come in say those
Familiar words at the top of the hour
The jamming city increases its hum, and those
    Terrible words continue to come
Through brass music of government, hear those
Guns tattoo a roll on the drums

No one mentions the neighbouring war
No one knows what their fighting is for
We are tired of the tune, "you must not relent"

The generals bow to the government
We're tired of the tune, "you must not relent"

    Inoculated City
  • Lyrically and musically this song is a follow-up to The Clash's 1981 single "The Call Up." It's a jaunty tune about the futility of war and war crimes and the actions of soldiers being defended by the age-old adage of "I was just following orders:

"The sergeant will for his sergeant's pay
Obey the general order of the battle play
The generals bow to the government
Obey the charge you must not relent"

A possible inspiration for these lyrics - written by Clash guitarist Mick Jones - is XTC's 1980 single "Generals and Majors."
  • Interestingly, the original version of the song had a sample from a US TV commercial about the toilet cleaner 2,000 Flushes. What point it served the song is uncertain (perhaps a comment on rampant commercialism), but it sounds pretty good at least. The company behind the product, Flushco Inc., threatened a million-dollar lawsuit and a temporary injunction against the manufacture of the Combat Rock LP, and the whole saga forced The Clash to go into hiding to avoid being served with a writ.

In the end the sample was withdrawn, and isn't present on the CD re-release. However, the original version of the song (with sample intact) is floating around on original pressings.

The song had already been chopped down by nearly two minutes from an early mix by Jones as part of the Rat Patrol from Fort Bragg early mix of the album. When this overlong mix was edited down by producer Glyn Jones, "Inoculated City" was one of many tracks to be cut down to decrease the run time.
  • This was featured on the B-side of the US release of the "Should I Stay or Should I Go?" single. It was played live by The Clash for a short time in 1981, during their Paris residency and on the following UK tour.

I get in from work at 2a.m.
And sit down with a beer
Turn on the late night t.v.
And then wonder why I'm here
    It's meaningless and trivial
    And it washes over me
    And once again I wonder
Is this all there is for me

    Here I am again
    Look at me again
    Here I am again
    On my own
    Trying hard to see
    What there is for me
    Here I am again
    On my own

    Life seems so pathetic
I wish I could live it all behind
    This canvas chair, this bed,
These walls that fall in on my mind
    Hold on for something better
That just drags you trough the dirt
Do you just let go or carry on
And try to take the hurt

  • Written by Blaze Bayley, Jannick Gers and Steve Harris, this song has very pessimistic lyrics which are referring to a man who is living alone with nothing better to do with his life and no hope for the future.
  • Around 1993 Steve Harris got a divorce from his wife Lorraine and in an interview with Greek Metal Hammer Magazine said he was not having the best days of his life, both because Bruce Dickinson left the band and his personal problems with his family. So,it's easy to say the song presents the psychological situation that Harris had at that period of his life.

  • "The Colors of My Life" is a song from the first act of Barnum, the musical based on the life of American showman Phineas T. Barnum. Like the rest of the songs in the show it was composed by Cy Coleman and written by Michael Stewart. The slowest song in the show, it is begun by Barnum and finished by his wife. It is the way Barnum sees his life, but alas his wife paints a different and more realistic portrait. The song is reprised in act two.
