Picture Me In A Hospital Lyrics

Picture Me In A Hospital
The blood runs red and the bags are full of...
Oh it's terrible, makes me powerful
On and on there's still a song for me
I'm still around to sing it

Each man has a secret
To hide away
And never say, never know, and so it goes

Picture me in a hospital
The blood runs cold and hall are full of
Undesirables preaching parables
False alarm there's still a charm for me
Just wait and see

If each man had his freedom
And it was ours to say
How to behave, ho who's to say

So picture me in a hospital
Blood runs raw and the bags are full of
You're terrible and I'm invincible
Picture me in a hospital
The blood runs red and the bags are full of
It's hysterical, and it makes me powerful

False alarm there's still a song for me
I'm just about around to sing it
There's still a chance for me
And I'm still here singing

And so it goes
On and on and on and so it goes

And so it goes

Picture Me In A Hospital
  • Babyshambles' bass guitarist Drew McConnell suffered horrendous injuries after being knocked off his bike by a car in East London, suffering multiple breaks to his spine and various bones. This collaboration with vocalist Peter Doherty was inspired by his slow, painful, but ultimately full recovery. He told NME: "This is about Peter coming to visit me after my car accident. One of my first memories was the paramedic telling me I'd broken my spine in three places. Then my next memory is on a slab with doctors all around me. And then the memory after that is waking up to somebody brushing the hair away from my eyes, and I looked up and it was Peter."

    Talent Show Lyrics

In my waxed up hair and my painted shoes
Got an offer that you might refuse
Tonight, tonight, we're gonna take a stab
Come on along, we'll grab a cab

We ain't much to look at so
Close your eyes, here we go
We're playin' at the Talent Show
    Playin' at the talent show
Come on along, here we go
    Playin' at the talent show
Check us out, here we go
    Playin' at the talent show

Well we got our guitars and we got thumb picks
And we go on after some lip-synch chicks
We're feelin' good from the pills we took
Oh, baby, don't gimme that look

We ain't much to look at so
Close your eyes, here we go
We're playin' at the talent show
    Playin' at the talent show
Come on along, here we go
    Playin' at the talent show
Hop a ride, here we go
    Playin' at the talent show

Well it's the biggest thing in my life I guess
Look at us all, we're nervous wrecks
    Hey, we go on next

    Talent show
    Talent show
    Playin' at the talent show
    Playin' at the talent show

Wish us luck if you can't go
    Playin' at the talent show
An empty seat in the front row
We might even win this time, guys, you never know

It's too late to turn back, here we go...

  • While performing this on an MTV awards show, the line "Feelin' good from the pills we took" was bleeped. As an subtle "screw you" to the show, they replaced "It's too late to turn back" with "It's too late to take pills" for the rest of the song. This incident is further evidence of why they never were as famous as they could have been.
  • The tune and chorus were lifted from their song "Portland."

    One Mississippi Lyrics

    One Mississippi, two Mississippi
Counting down the seconds, standing in the wreckage of love
On a cold grey Jackson dawn
Oh I just can't watch this, sure can't stop this
I keep waiting, your tail lights are fading, I see
    You're already gone
I'm half of who I used to be,
    One Mississippi, hm

    Lipstick on the coffee cup
I know I should wash it up But maybe I'll
Just wait here for a little while
I run my fingers around the top
Where your lips were I just stop 'cause I,
I can almost see your smile

And it's one Mississippi, two Mississippi
Counting down the seconds, standing in the wreckage of love
On a cold grey Jackson dawn

And I know everybody's got their demons
    Everybody's got their reasons
Why they leave when they run
But baby I could have helped you through it
You built a wall and I couldn't get to it
Now I'm waiting for the rain,
And the pain to come yeah

And it's one Mississippi, two Mississippi
Counting down the seconds, standing in the wreckage of love
On a cold grey Jackson dawn
Oh I just can't watch this, sure can't stop this
I keep waiting, your tail lights are fading, I see
    You're already gone
I'm half of who I used to be,

Ooh one Mississippi yeah yeah yeah
    Yeah

    One Mississippi
  • Eldredge explained to Radio.com how this ballad blends his love for Country and Soul music. "'One Mississippi' is definitely a song that brings in the whole love I have for soulful music combined with country," he said. "I heard Ronnie Dunn growing up, I heard Brooks & Dunn and I loved his soulful vibe that he had. I love how he ties that in with country music but with a very rural lyric."
  • Eldredge told American Songwriter magazine in a 2013 interview why he's especially proud of this song. "I wrote that song with Tom Douglas probably three or four years ago," he said. "I started my radio tours and I'd be singing a few songs in a conference room, just me and that song. I was working on my record probably for two years, and that song has stuck with me the whole time. It's just been something that has stuck with the fans. It's always been one of my most popular songs. I'm so proud of the song because it's been a wild ride to get to that point, and this song was with me from the beginning, and it stays strong through all of it. It's a special song."

    Let's Dance Lyrics

Hey baby, won't you take a chance?
If you want to, you can have a dance
    Let's Dance, let's dance
Do the twist and shout, mashed potato too
Any old dance that you want to do
    Let's dance, let's dance

Hey baby, now you're all alone
Hey baby, let me walk you home
    Let's dance, let's dance
Do the twist and shout, mashed potato too
Any old dance that you want to do
    Let's dance, let's dance

    Let's dance
Put on your red shoes and dance the blues
    Let's dance
Dance to the song they're playing on the radio
    Let's sway
While color lights up your face
    Let's sway
Sway through the crowd to an empty space

If you say run, I'll run with you
If you say hide, we'll hide
    Watch my love for you
It would break my heart in two
If you should fall into my arms
    And tremble like a flower

    Let's dance, let's dance

    Let's Dance
  • This song is about (rather unsurprisingly) dancing with a lover. It is the title track to Let's Dance, which was produced by Nile Rodgers, who was responsible for the album's funky sound. Rodgers founded the disco band, Chic, and produced hits for Diana Ross, including "Upside Down" and "I'm Coming Out." He also produced Madonna's 1985 album Like a Virgin.
  • Stevie Ray Vaughan played lead guitar on this song. Bowie was impressed when he saw Vaughan perform at the Montreaux Jazz festival a year earlier. When Vaughan received the call from Bowie to play on the record, he was (although not literally) in the middle of recording his own album, Texas Flood.
  • This was Bowie's only transatlantic #1, a very upbeat song with mass appeal. He described it as "positive, emotional and uplifting." Said Bowie: "I tried to produce something that was warmer and more humanistic than anything I've done for a long time. Less emphasis on the nihilistic kind of statement."
  • The official video was directed by David Mallet. It was filmed in Australia and features an Aboriginal couple who are struggling against Western cultural imperialism. The video was described by Bowie as a "very simple, very direct" statement against racism.

According to Mallet, they shot the bar scenes in the morning, which didn't go over well with the locals, who didn't appreciate Bowie and fashionable crew. Some of the patrons also resented the Aborigines who starred in the clip, and mocked them with their own dance moves. Mallet shot this on film and edited it into the video - the white people dancing in the bar were actually making fun of the couple.
  • Red Shoes are a theme in the video and appear in the lyrics, "Put on your red shoes and dance the blues." This is a reference to the 1948 movie The Red Shoes, where a dancer performs in a ballet of that name. The idea is that the red shoes make you dance - it's based on a Hans Christian Andersen story of the same title. Kate Bush recorded a song about the same subject.
  • The tour to support this album was called the "Serious Moonlight Tour," named after a line in this song: "Under the moonlight, the serious moonlight."

Originally slated just for Europe, the tour was so successful that it was expanded to North America, Asia and Australia, often in large stadiums.
  • Smashing Pumpkins covered this song in 1998 along with Joy Division's "Transmission" during a 25 minute live jam.
  • Nile Rodgers said of this song in the 2013 film Davie Bowie: 5 Years in the Making of an Icon: "'Let's Dance' is not what I'd call a traditional dance record, but it's certainly a record that does make you want to dance. I thought to myself, 'Man, if I don't make a record that makes people want to dance, and we call the song Let's Dance, I'm going to have to trade in my black union card.'"
  • Gnarls Barkley are digitally inserted into this video during their own video for "Smiley Faces."
  • Nile Rodgers recalled to The Guardian May 18, 2012: "When Bowie and I got together to do Let's Dance, we spent two weeks researching music and styles and Bowie suddenly said: 'I got it!' He held up a Little Richard album cover where he's wearing a red suit, getting into a red Cadillac, with a pompadour haircut, and said: 'That's rock'n'roll.' After doing all that research with him, I got it too. I knew instantly what he wanted. We switched the suit for a yellow one when we released our record."
  • Speaking with the Daily Telegraph July 30, 2013, Nile Rodgers recalled Bowie unveiling this song to him. "He says, 'Nile, darling, I think this is a hit,' and he proceeds to play what sounds like a folk song to me, with a twelve-string guitar," recalled the producer. Unable to tell Bowie that what he was playing was not dance music, Rodgers wrote an entire arrangement, taking it in "a funky direction." Said Rodgers: "I was like the Terminator, I was unstoppable, I just wanted to make hits with David."
  • Bowie's brief cameo in the Ben Stiller film, Zoolander, is accompanied by this song.
  • Craig David's 2007 UK Top 10 hit "Hot Stuff" extensively samples this song.
  • Peter Lawless was the location finder for the music video. He was also the location finder/manager for the Matrix films, which were also filmed in Australia.

  • The lead single from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire soundtrack was recorded by the English band Coldplay. Their frontman, Chris Martin, is apparently a fan of Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games novels, according to a press release for the song. "We are so honored that Coldplay, one of the iconic rock bands of our generation, will perform the first song out on the new soundtrack," said Tracy McKnight, Lionsgate's Head of Film Music. "Knowing that Chris Martin is a fan of the books makes this even more meaningful. The Coldplay single underscores the stature of recording artists we've assembled for this powerful soundtrack."

Director Francis Lawrence added: "I have great respect and admiration for Coldplay, and we are thrilled with how well they have connected to the themes and ideas within the film."
  • This marked the first time Coldplay has ever recorded an original song for a motion picture.
  • Chris Martin sings on this sweeping piano ballad about two people sharing the weight of the world on each other's shoulders in reference to the mutual dependance of the film's protagonists Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark.
  • The song's titular character, Atlas, was a Greek mythological figure, who according to legend, was condemned by Zeus for his part in the war of the Titans to bear the heavens on his shoulders. He went to live in the Atlas mountains in North Africa, which the Ancient Greeks said supported the sky.

Led Zeppelin also referenced the Greek Titan on their 1976 track "Achilles Last Stand." ("The mighty arms of Atlas hold the heavens from the Earth.")

    Isobel
  • This is a strange, epic, modern fairy tale about a girl named Isobel. It was the first single released from the Post album.
  • Björk says of this song on Björk.com: "This is the story of Isobel; she was born in a forest by a spark, and as she grew up, she realized that the pebbles on the forest floor were actually skyscrapers. And by the time she was a grown-up woman and the skyscrapers had taken over the forest. She found herself in a city, and she didn't like all the people there so much, because they were a bit too clever for her."
  • After directing clips for "Human Behaviour" and "Army Of Me," French filmmaker Michel Gondry returns for the surreal black-and-white music video for "Isobel," which follows Björk in the lead role as a girl who grows airplanes by planting light bulbs with toy planes inside.

    Hold On We're Going Home
  • The second single from Drake's Nothing Was the Same album is a Noah "40" Shebib co-produced cut, which finds the Toronto MC singing about a "good girl" whom he attempts to seduce.

"I got my eyes on you, you're everything that I see
I want your hot love and emotion endlessly
I can't get over you, you left your mark on me
I want your high love and emotion endlessly."

"It's me and 40 just channeling our Quincy Jones/Michael Jackson production duo," Drake told MTV News. "Obviously no offense to the greats, I know we're not anywhere near that — it's just us kinda doing our thing, humbly attempting."
"It's not a rap record," he added. "It's not 'Versace,' it's not 'Started from the Bottom.' In approaching this album I was like man, it would be great if we had a record that was played at weddings in 10 years or that people that are away from their families in the army could listen to. Something that just [has] timeless writing, timeless melody."
  • The song features a group called Majid Jordan, who are signed to Drake's OVO Sound label. The act is a pair of Toronto producers, Majid Al Maskati and Jordan "ClassAct" Ullman, who were formerly known as Good People.
  • The song's music video takes place in 1985 Miami and was directed by Bill Pope, who also worked on The Matrix trilogy. It finds Drake playing a criminal kingpin who gets his lover kidnapped by a rival gang and does everything in his power to get his girl back home. Actor Steven Baauer (Scarface) plays the bad guy, whilst rapper A$AP Rocky gives the opening toast. "Basically it's a video full of acting because I'm dying to get back into acting," Drake told MTV News. "So there's actually no performance in the video."

"I based it off of some of the old Michael Jackson videos like Moonwalker," he added, "so it's sort of exciting, violent a little and scary a little, but it's great."
  • Drake revealed to Jian Ghomeshi of CBC Radio that he knocked out this song in about two hours.
  • This was Pitchfork 's Top Track of 2013. The alternative music website said: "'Hold On' promises all we can ask for from a pop song (or another person): hot love and emotion, for richer or poorer, for better or worse, in sickness and in health. Endlessly."
  • A version by The Voice Season 6 contestant Christina Grimme peaked at #74 on the Hot 100.
  • Despite being a R&B song, this won a VMA for Best Hip-Hop Video of the Year. Drake gave a acceptance speech during a Boston concert, in which jokingly commented on the oddity of his win. "I know this is a hip-hop award and a lot of you out there are frustrated, like, 'This is not a hip-hop song.' And you know what? You're right -- I tricked you all," he laughed. "Rappers, better luck next year. Thank you."

    Another Soulmate
  • This one-off single was released in time for Jane's Addiction's August 9, 2013 co-headlining appearance at the Rockstar Energy Uproar Festival, in Scranton, Pennsylvania and was a centrepiece of their five-week Uproar Tour. "Being that we have a tour, I'm really happy that we have a good song that will serve as our calling card when we hit various cities," frontman Perry Farrell told Rolling Stone. "Jane's is kind of known for long songs; being this is a one-song single, I thought it'd be interesting to try and write a Beatles-esque short song that would be fast and furious and it would just be fun, dig it and move on, short attention span."
  • This was inspired by a girlfriend of Perry's wife, Etty Lau Farrell. "This girlfriend, as all people do, really wanted a mate," the singer explained, "and I think she shortchanged herself an awful lot in life. She's a good-looking woman, she had a career, but when it came to love and romance, she sold herself short all the time and she would reach out to guys that we would scratch our head like, 'What is she doing with this guy?' She said, 'I feel like he's my soul mate.' Any time she'd meet a guy she'd say, 'I feel like he's my soul mate.' So I wrote this song."
  • The song was first performed live by Jane's Addiction back in 2010 when bassist Duff McKagan was sitting in with the band.

And you know that notion just crossed my mind

This old engine, makes it on time
Leaves Central Station at a quarter to nine
Hits River Junction at seventeen to
At a quarter to ten you know it's travelin' again

Drivin' that train, high on cocaine
Casey Jones you better, watch your speed
    Trouble ahead, trouble behind
And you know that notion just crossed my mind

Trouble ahead, The Lady in Red
Take my advice you'd be better off dead
Switchman sleepin', train hundred and two
is on the wrong track and headed for you

Drivin' that train, high on cocaine
Casey Jones you better, watch your speed
    Trouble ahead, trouble behind
And you know that notion just crossed my mind

Trouble with you is the trouble with me
Got two good eyes but we still don't see

    Casey Jones
  • "Casey Jones" is (very) loosely based on the real life happenings of the heroic engineer Casey Jones, who was the subject of the famous 1902 song "The Ballad Of Casey Jones." It was doubtful that Jones was high on cocaine when he took over the train, and although his life was ended when he was hit by a train traveling the wrong way, he sacrificed his life so those on board could be saved.
  • In the book Garcia: A Signpost to New Space, Jerry Garcia was asked if this song grates on him when he hears it. The Dead frontman replied: "Sometimes, but that's what it's supposed to do. It's got a split-second little delay, which sounds very mechanical, like a typewriter almost, on the vocal, which is like a little bit jangly, and the whole thing is, I always thought it's a pretty good musical picture of what cocaine is like. A little bit evil. And hard-edged. And also that sing-songy thing, because that's what it is, a sing-songy thing, a little melody that gets in your head."
  • Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter came up with the line "Drivin' that train, high on cocaine, Casey Jones you'd better watch your speed," which he wrote down and put in his pocket. He didn't think of it as part of a song until he looked at it later and decided to complete the lyrics.

When they put the song together, Hunter looked for ways to omit the word "cocaine," which at the time was a controversial word for song lyrics (they had taken some heat for using "Goddamn" in "Uncle John's Band"). Hunter tried some other phrases - "whipping that chain," "lugging propane" - but couldn't find an acceptable substitute, so Casey Jones ended up high on cocaine as originally written.

    Blame It On Love Lyrics

    Blame It On Love
  • This was released as the first single from Los Lonely Boys' sixth album. Guitarist Henry Garza told AntiMusic : "We picked this track to be the first to be released because we felt that this song really took us back to our Texican roots, and it was a song that almost anyone could connect with."

Garza added: "The real inspiration behind this song was love, and we were looking for a way to say that love is the reason for everything. In all honesty, who hasn't had a situation where they could blame the outcome on love!? If we really pay attention, everything we do is motivated by love."
  • The track was recorded at Bismeaux Studios in Austin, Texas with Don Gehman manning the boards. Gehman is best known for his work in the 1980s with John Mellencamp and R.E.M. Garza told AntiMusic regarding the veteran producer: "He has worked with so many greats, and it was a humbling experience to be in the studio with him. Don just has a way of knowing how to make a track pop, and he did that with 'Blame It On Love.'"

Loco Gringos Like A Party Lyrics

    Loco Gringos Like A Party
  • At a concert, The Reverend explained that this song is about a real band called The Loco Gringos that used to play in California. They had a lot of character, and would literally bring "5 bales of hay" to decorate the set; they cruised town in a "Cadillac Hearse" and had a tour bus painted like the Mexican flag; they lived in a house they called "Gringo Manor;" and there was a guy who would sell corndogs at their shows, which explains the line, "Hey there, Pablo, whatcha got in the bag?"
