Hey Baby Lyrics

Hey Baby, hey baby, hey!
Girls say,boys say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey
Hey baby baby
I'm the kinda girl that hangs with the guys
Like a fly on the wall with my secret eyes
Taking it in, try to be feminine
With my makeup bag watching all the sin
Misfit, I sit, lit up, wicked
Everybody else surrounded by the girls
With the tank tops and the flirty ways

I'm just sipping on chamomile
Watching boys and girls and their sex appeal
With a stranger in the face who says he knows my mom
And went to my high school

[Chorus]
All the boys say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Girls say, girls say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Hey baby baby
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Boys say, boys say
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
All the boys get the girls in the back

I'm the one they feed upon
Give a bit a star is born
And if you had enough you'll get the pass
And you can tell your friends how you made it back
No matter what they say I'm still the same
Somehow everybody knows my name
And all the girls want to get with the boys
And the boys really like it

[Chorus]

[Bounty Killer]
Check it out, it's Bounty Killer, and no doubt
Jump on the stage makes me going crazy
After wards myself and one of them gorgeous ladies(that's right)
There is no need to be acting shady
Come on baby, hey hey baby
Jump on the stage makes me going crazy
After wards myself and one of them gorgeous ladies(yea man)
There is no need to be acting shady
Come on baby, hey hey baby
When you rock your hips you know that it amaze me
Got me off the hook and nothing else don't phase me
Can you be my one and only sunshine lady
If no, no maybe, hey

[Gwen]
I'm just sipping on chamomile
Watching boys and girls and their sex appeal
With a stranger in the face who says he knows my mom
And went to my high school
(hey baby, hey baby)(that's right)

All the boys say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Girls say, girls say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Hey baby baby (hey baby)
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Boys say, boys say
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Can you be my one and only sunshine lady
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Girls say, girls say,
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
When you rock your hips you know that it amaze me
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
Boys say, boys say
Hey baby, hey baby, hey!
All the boys get the girls in the back

Hey Baby Song Chart
  • This song is about groupies who try very hard to get some time with the male members of No Doubt. Lead singer Gwen Stefani says these ladies are much worse than the male fans who like her. As the only girl in the group, she sees what happens backstage as her bandmates entertain their female fans.
  • Jamaican reggae artist Bounty Killer does the rap on this song and is in the video. In Jamaica, rappers are known as "toasters," as rap began there when DJs spoke over records, which they called "toasting."
  • Reggae musicians Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare (Sly and Robbie) produced this. They were session musicians for years, providing reggae rhythms for Bob Dylan, Grace Slick, and The Rolling Stones, among others.
  • This was the first single from the album. It was released 15 months after their last one, Return Of Saturn, which was released five years after Tragic Kingdom.
  • At the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, this won for Best Pop Video and Best Group Video.
  • This won the 2002 Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance By A Duo Or Group. No Doubt performed on the show before they won - they had the unenviable task of going on after Simon and Garfunkel reunited to perform a moving rendition of their classic "The Sound Of Silence."

Both acts were introduced by actor Dustin Hoffman, and while Hoffman was quite familiar with Simon and Garfunkel (he starred in The Graduate, which they contributed to), he apparently knew little about No Doubt. When he introduced them, he said that his daughter had coached him on their music and sort of sang a little of this, except he sang "Say Baby" instead of "Hey Baby." Hoffman is clearly more comfortable at the Oscars, he also called Bruce Springsteen "Bruce Springstreet."
  • Backwards, the line "Boys Say" sounds like "Yes Sir." (thanks, Conrad - Los Angeles, CA)

    Underneath It All Lyrics

There's times where I want something more
    Someone more like me
There's times when this dress rehearsal
    Seems incomplete
But, you see the colors in me like no one else
And behind your dark glasses you're
    You're something else

    You're really lovely
    Underneath It All
    You want to love me
    Underneath it all
    I'm really lucky
    Underneath it all
    You're really lovely

You know some real bad tricks
    And you need some discipline
But, lately you've been trying real hard
    And giving me your best
And, you give me the most gorgeous sleep
    That I've ever had
    And when it's really bad
I guess it's not that bad

    You're really lovely
    Underneath it all
    You want to love me
    Underneath it all
    I'm really lucky
    Underneath it all
    You're really lovely

So many moons that we have seen
    Stumbling back next to me
I've seen right through and underneath
    And you make me better
I've seen right through and underneath
    And you make me better
    Better better

You are my real Prince Charmin'
Like the heat from the fire
    You were always burnin'
    And each time you're around
    My body keeps callin
    For your touch
Your kisses and your sweet romancin'
    There's an underside to you
that this here woman that adore
    Aside from your temper
    Everything is secure
    You're good for me, baby
    of that, I'm sure
    Over and over again
    I want more

You've used up all your coupons
And all you've got left is me
And somehow I'm full of forgiveness
I guess it's meant to be

    You're really lovely
    Underneath it all
    You want to love me
    Underneath it all
    I'm really lucky
    Underneath it all
    You're really lovely

    You're really lovely
    Underneath it all
    You want to love me
    Underneath it all
    I'm really lovely
    Underneath it all
    And you're really lovely

    Underneath It All
  • No Doubt lead singer Gwen Stefani wrote this with Dave Stewart of Eurythmics fame. They were introduced by Jimmy Iovine, who is good friends with Stewart and chairman of Interscope, which is No Doubt's label. The band came over to Stewart's apartment in London, and he and Gwen went to the kitchen with their acoustic guitars and completed the song in about 15 minutes. Stewart wrote of Stefani in The Dave Stewart Songbook : "She really has great melodic sensibility and uses her subconscious to express herself lyrically. She sings freeform stream-of-consciousness at first but there are always words that appear to be coming from an emotional place. She then quickly understands what she wants to say and it all falls into place. 'Underneath It All' was an example of this and I saw it happen in real time right there in my kitchen."
  • In our interview with Dave Stewart, he spoke about the difference between writing with his Eurythmics partner Annie Lennox, and writing with Stefani, who he had just met. Says Stewart: "Well, it's kind of weird. Because if I walk into a room to write with Gwen, Gwen comes with a lot of stuff attached to her, and I also come into a room with that. So the first 15 minutes usually is getting past that stuff. And then very quickly, and usually due to a certain courtship, you know like how a certain chord can change the temperature in a room? It evokes a certain emotion in me or in Gwen, and then it'll suddenly make us think about something that happened in her life, and something that she might want to talk about, something she might not want to talk about, but you can kind of hear what it is in the lyric and the melody. And soon, within an hour and a half it's as if you've known that person for years. And often, then, people start talking about all their private thoughts, and everything that's going on in their life usually comes rolling out."
  • In a 2002 interview in Rolling Stone, Stefani explained that her lyrics were inspired by her relationship with Gavin Rossdale of the band Bush, who she was madly in love with and later married. They spent some time in a part the previous day, and Stefani wrote in her journal: "You're lovely underneath it all."
  • Gwen Stefani and Dave Stewart hadn't met before the day they wrote this song, but they had a lot in common and bonded quickly. They both had intimate relationships with a band member who they broke up with, but continued working with: Stewart with Annie Lennox and Stefani with No Doubt bass player Tony Kanal. They share a love of Jamaican music, and are big fans of Sophie Muller, who has directed videos for Eurythmics and No Doubt.
  • This track features a rap by the Jamaican Dancehall deejay Lady Saw. In 2003 she became the first female deejay to win a Grammy when this won the Grammy for Best Performance by a Duo or Group with a Vocal.
  • Sophie Muller, who directed the video, wanted to show what Stefani was like "underneath it all." She explained to Music Video Wire : "She started off with tons of make-up and hair, kind of really over done like a stripper. As the video proceeds she loses her make up and at the end the make up and overdone look is gone. The idea was stripping back to being your simple self. We had to do it using visual metaphors. She was going to be talking her clothes off, but that made it too complicated. Instead we made it into sections where in each section she was less made up."

Muller enlisted the directing collaborative Logan to create special effects, like the band riding bicycles in Jamaica as a nod to Lady Saw's influence.

    No More Drama
  • This song was written by the team of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who were also the producers of the track. The song is about going through hard times and moving on from the pain.
  • Fans of daytime Soap Operas immediately recognized the piano part in this song as the theme to the venerable CBS show The Young And The Restless. The TV song is known as "Nadia's Theme," although it was originally titled "Cotton's Dream." The sample was very fitting for this song, as drama is very much associated with the show. The writers of the theme - Perry Botkin and Barry Vorzon - are credited as writers on "No More Drama" because of the sample.
  • Blige told the Daily Telegraph February 7, 2008 that when she sings "No More Drama" in concert today, she feels a lifetime of pain unspooling every time: "I go through the emotion of being a child growing up in the projects, getting robbed, grown-ups snatching our trick-or-treating bags, being shot at, having to fight physically every day of your life, going home to alcoholic aunts and every woman around you being beaten so badly by men you can't even understand it, and then growing up and realizing you're repeating all those patterns, you're drinking the alcohol and doing the drugs and being abused by men, and the pain and frustration of not being able to stop it. I rewind through that every time I sing it. I want to give people the real truth."
  • The album was released shortly before the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in America; Blige said that she used this song as an outlet to express her emotions.
  • A vocal sample of the words "Mary J. Blige, no more drama" repeats throughout the course of the album.
  • This won the 2002 MTV Video Music Award for Best R&B Song.
  • The No More Drama album was re-released in 2002 with some different tracks.

    The Christmas Shoes Lyrics

It was almost Christmas time, there I stood in another line
Tryin' to buy that last gift or two, not really in the Christmas mood
Standing right in front of me was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing 'round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes

His clothes were worn and old, he was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldn't believe what I heard him say

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
Then the cashier said, "Son, there's not enough here"
    He searched his pockets frantically
Then he turned and he looked at me
He said Mama made Christmas good at our house
Though most years she just did without
Tell me Sir, what am I going to do,
Somehow I've got to buy her these Christmas shoes

So I laid the money down, I just had to help him out
I'll never forget the look on his face when he said
    Mama's gonna look so great

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while
And I know these shoes would make her smile
And I want her to look beautiful if Mama meets Jesus tonight

    I knew I'd caught a glimpse of heaven's love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that God had sent that little boy
To remind me just what Christmas is all about

Sir, I want to buy these shoes for my Mama, please
It's Christmas Eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir, Daddy says there's not much time
You see she's been sick for quite a while

    The Christmas Shoes
  • The song tells the story of a little boy with clothes that "were worn and old" buying shoes one Christmas Eve for his sick mother so she'll look good if she "meets Jesus tonight." Founding member Eddie Carswell told us, "it was inspired by this lady who'd actually been in that situation - not exactly the way the story goes, but a very similar story."
  • The song's storyline was inspired by a Christmas story that St. Louis-based radio personality DC Chymes found on the Internet. A NewSong fan, Chymes asked Eddie Carswell to write a song based on the narrative. Eddie and his then songwriting partner Leonard Ahlstrom liked the idea and worked at it on and off for a couple of years without completing the song. "We would read this story, and we knew something was there," Eddie recalled in the band's online biography, "so we kept stabbing at it, kept coming back to it."
  • When the band was recording Sheltering Tree, Eddie pitched the unfinished song, but the producer passed on the cut. With the album complete, NewSong had a meeting with people from their Benson Records label. The suggestion was made about adding a last minute Christmas song, so Eddie played a rough version of "The Christmas Shoes". Their enthusiastic response convinced the two writers to finish the song and the record label to add it. Within a mere week, the second verse and bridge were complete, and "The Christmas Shoes" was on the album as a bonus track.
  • Benson was a Christian record label but it had a mainstream affiliate. When they played the song for their mainstream side, they immediately saw its potential. Eddie recalled to us, "First thing you know it was out and we're getting these unbelievable reports all over the country about it and about how much everybody liked it and what was going on."
  • After NewSong recorded the track, Carswell told a writer friend of his, Donna VanLiere about it. She put together a novella based on the song , which was on the New York Times bestseller list in 2002. It was later made into a TV movie for CBS, called The Christmas Shoes starring Rob Lowe and Kimberley Williams, which was the second highest-rated TV movie of the 2002-2003 seasons. VanLiere has since penned several more books that were inspired by the song, which have spawned a couple more TV movies. Eddie told us that, "it's just been a crazy thing how God's blessed that little song. Just when you think it's all over, something else happens about it. So it's been an amazing song to be a part of."
  • The Christian music group NewSong was originally a 9-member church band for Morningside Baptist Church in Valdosta, Georgia, formed in 1983.
  • This hit the top of the Adult Contemporary chart in 3 weeks. A year later it was the title track of NewSong's holiday album.

    Here Today Lyrics

And if I say I really knew you well
    What would your answer be?
    If you were Here Today
    Ooo ooo ooo, here today

    Well, knowing you
    You'd probably laugh and say
    That we were worlds apart
    If you were here today
    Ooo ooo ooo, here today

    But as for me,
I still remember how it was before
And I am holding back the tears no more
Ooo ooo ooo, I love you, ooo

What about the time we met?
Well, I suppose that you could say
That we were playing hard to get
    Didn't understand a thing
    But we could always sing

What about the night we cried?
    Because there wasn't any reason
Left to keep it all inside
    Never understood a word
But you were always there with a smile

And if I say I really loved you
And was glad you came along
    And you were here today
Ooo ooo ooo, for you were in my song
    Ooo ooo ooo, here today

    Here Today
  • McCartney wrote this for John Lennon after his tragic death. He sings of the years they spent together in much detail.
  • McCartney performed this live on his 2002 release Back In The US.
  • Paul McCartney: "The truth of the matter is when John died it was so weird for everyone and obviously for those of us that were near to him it was doubly, triply weird and then there was the obvious sort of thing is anyone going to write a song about John because obviously certainly we all felt deeply enough and normally when we felt deeply enough we committed it to song. I was wondering if I was going to do it but I thought I'm not going to sit down and try to do it but if anything comes sometime I'll do it. I was one day just sitting quietly in this little room with my guitar and these chords started coming out and I started having these thoughts as if I was talking to myself to John about our relationship and stuff and obviously one of the things that had been funny for me was this idea of when the Beatles broke up we became enemies for a time. But I knew we weren't and I know for a fact he knew we weren't too because independently of each other we'd talked nicely of each other but there was a pride thing of two men very difficult business and all that." (Transcribed from an interview. Thanks, Edward Pearce - Ashford, Kent, England)
  • McCartney told The London Times December 5, 2009 that in this song, "I'm talking to John in my head. It's a conversation we didn't have." He added that they were reconciled again by the time of the tragedy: "We were mates. God, that was so cool. It was the saving grace. Because it got a bit sticky after the Beatles. No, we were really good mates again - it was lovely, actually. Performing this song, in New York, where he was killed, is a very emotional affair. The last verse, where I sing 'and if I said I really loved you, and was glad you came along,' it's like singing it to your dad who died."
  • During the Q&A Mojo Magazine Session in November, 2009, McCartney said that this song is his most difficult to perform: "I realise I'm telling this man that I love him, and it's like, 'Oh my god', like I'm publicly declaring it in front of all these people I don't know! It's a good thing to do, though."

  • Linda Perry wrote this and produced the album. Pink was a big fan of Perry's group 4 Non Blondes, and contacted her to work on the album. The success of this song caused Perry to put her solo career on hold and instead work with other female singers.
  • Pink was once arrested for disturbing her neighbors by singing out of her window at 3.30am. The song she was singing was by 4 Non Blondes, and was written by Linda Perry.
  • Perry came up with this when she was learning how to program a drum machine. It was the first dance hit she ever wrote.
  • This won the 2002 MTV Europe Music Award for Best Song.
  • In the UK a cover by the veteran Welsh vocalist Shirley Bassey peaked at #47 in the singles charts. This was her 33rd British hit, her first being a version of "The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)," which reached #8 in 1957. Shirley Bassey thus has recorded chart UK entries over a 50-year period, a record for a female.
  • Bassey covered this originally for a 2006 advert for the English food and clothing retailer Marks and Spencer over the Christmas period. Such was the response for her version that it became the title track of her first album release for ten years in 2007. I knew this was a big mistake
    There's a fine line drawing
    My senses together
And I think it's about to break
If I listen close I can hear them singers
Voices in your body coming through on the radio
The Union Of The Snake is on the climb
Moving up it's gonna race it's gonna break
    Through the borderline
    Nightshades on a warning
Give me strength at least give me a light
    Give me anything even sympathy
There's a chance you could be right

    Union Of The Snake
  • Duran Duran is rarely forthcoming about the meanings behind their songs, but this appears to be about the evil part of you taking over and consuming your body. The snake represents that other side of you.
  • In 1984, Duran Duran released The Book Of Words, which contained lyrics to their songs. In the book, Simon Le Bon explained, "Borderline might be one between the conscious and subconscious minds." He admitted in later interviews that it was a reference to tantric sex.
  • This was inspired by Jim Morrison's lyrics for The Doors' albums. Simon Le Bon told Spinner : "There are times when I get into books and things and some of that comes up on the record or I'll get into a certain artist. An obvious example of that is 'Union of The Snake' and 'Hungry Like The Wolf' are very much related to Jim Morrison and his lyrical ideas."
  • When the band got back together in 2002, bass player John Taylor dubbed it the "reunion of the snake."

Saturday In The Park, I think it was the Fourth of July
Saturday in the park, I think it was the Fourth of July
People dancing, people laughing, a man selling ice cream (sellin' ice cream)
Can you dig it (yes, I can) And I've been waiting such a long time

    Saturday in the park
You'd think it was the Fourth of July
    Saturday in the park
You'd think it was the Fourth of July
    People talking, really smiling
    A man playing guitar
    Singing for us all
Will you help him change the world
Can you dig it (yes, I can)
And I've been waiting such a long time

A bronze man still can tell stories his own way
Listen children all is not lost, all is not lost, oh no, no,

Funny days in the park, every day's the Fourth of July
Funny days in the park, every day's the Fourth of July
People reaching, people touching, A real celebration
Waiting for us all, If we want it, really want it
Can you dig it (yes, I can), And I've been waiting such a long time
    For the day

    Saturday In The Park
  • Chicago's main songwriter, Robert Lamm, wrote this after a particularly exhilarating 4th of July spent in New York's Central Park, where there were steel drum players, singers, dancers and jugglers. Lamm and Peter Cetera sang lead on the track.
  • Robert Lamm based the melody of this song on "You Won't See Me" by The Beatles, something he openly admitted.
  • like most Chicago singles, this didn't chart in the UK. In America, however, it was their biggest chart hit to that point and also their first gold single, which at the time meant selling more than a million copies ("25 Or 6 To 4" somehow was never certified gold).
  • This song contains some of the most famous nonsense singing in rock: after Robert Lamm sings the line, "Singing Italian songs," he sings some made up words approximating the Italian language.
  • In the 2000 Adam Sandler film Little Nicky, this song was used for comedic effect when it was played backwards to show that it contains satanic messages.

Other movies to use the song include The Spirit of '76 (1990) and My Girl (1991). TV series to feature the song include The Sopranos (2002), My Name Is Earl (2005) and Fringe (2011).
  • Chicago and Robin Thicke performed part of this song at the 2014 Grammy Awards in a medley of Chicago's hits leading into Thicke's song "Blurred Lines." The occasion: Chicago's first album entering the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Smokin' In The Boy's Room Lyrics

How you doin' out there? Y'ever seem to have one of those days where it just seems like everybody's gettin' on your case, from your teacher all the way down to your best girlfriend? Well, y'know, I used to have 'em just about all the time. But I found a way to get out of 'em. Let me tell you about it! Sitting in the classroom Thinking it's a drag Listening to the teacher rap Just ain't my bag The noon bells ring You know that's my cue I'm gonna meet the boys On floor number two! Smokin' in the boys' room Smokin' in the boys' room Now, teacher, don't you fill me up with your rules But everybody knows that smokin' ain't allowed in school. A-checkin' out the halls Makin' sure the coast is clear Lookin' in the stalls No, there ain't nobody here Oh, my buddy Fang, and me and Paul To get caught would surely be the death of us all Smokin' in the boys' room Smokin' in the boys' room Now, teacher, don't you fill me up with your rules But everybody knows that smokin' ain't allowed in school. All right! Oh, put me to work In the school book store Check out counter And I got bored Teacher was lookin' For me all around Two hours later You know where I was found Smokin' in the boys' room (Yes indeed, I was) Smokin' in the boys' room Now, teacher, don't you fill me up with your rules But everybody knows that smokin' ain't allowed in school. One mo'! Smokin' in the boys' room Oh, smokin' in the boys' room Now, teacher, I am fully aware of the rules But everybody knows that smokin' ain't allowed in school!

Smokin' In The Boy's Room Song Chart
  • This was written by Brownsville Station lead singer/guitarist Michael "Cub" Koda. Koda wrote for various music magazines, including Goldmine, until he died in 2000.
  • This song is about a group of schoolboys who sneak out of class to smoke tobacco in the boys' bathroom, only to be found by the principal who reminds them "No smoking allowed in school." Cub Koda got the idea for the song from memories of hanging out at a movie theater with his childhood friends - they would smuggle cigarettes lifted from their parents into the men's room at the Clinton Theater in Ann Arbor, Michigan on Friday nights. Coda says the "old duffer" who owned the theater would come after them, but never caught them in the act.

When he found himself in a band, Koda drew from this experience to write the song, shifting the scene from the movie house to the schoolhouse. (thanks, Alec Thorp - Yorktown Heights, NY)
  • For school outcasts who often questioned authority, this was a very validating song. It became an anthem for frustrated youth who felt marginalized at school.
  • It took Koda just a half hour to write the song and an hour for the band to record it. They didn't think much of it, but the song became far and away their biggest hit. Brownsville Station - comprised of Koda, bass player Michael Lutz and drummer Henry Weck at the time - had released two album previous to Yeah! and were enjoying regional acclaim around Michigan when "Smokin' In The Boy's Room" took them to the national level.

The band was known for their high-energy stage shows, which - along with a daring choice of stagewear - earned them a spot as the opening act for Slade on their 1974 UK tour.
  • Producer Doug Morris (also the owner of Big Tree Records) hated the song - he refused to release it as a 45 until a Portland, Maine, FM station started to play it off an LP. Afterwards, requests for the song streamed into the record company - it had over 100,000 orders for the single before Morris changed his mind and released it.
  • Mötley Crüe covered this song in 1985 on their album Theatre of Pain. It was their first US Top 40, hitting #16, and it brought the song to a new generation. The song's writer Cub Koda recalls joining Crüe on stage during a stop on their tour that year and watching the kids in the audience sing his song back to him. "I felt just like Chuck Berry," he said.
  • Let's address the apostrophe issue in this song. We list the title as it appeared on the album and single: "Boy's Room." This is bad grammar - "Boys' Room" or "Boys Room" would be correct, unless you were indicating a room that belonged to one particular boy.

Like the digitally altered Star Wars releases, this apostrophe has been excised from the title in most listings of the song just like Greedo shoots at Han Solo. The Mötley Crüe version removed the apostrophe - they might be down with sneaking cigarettes at school, but not with misplaced punctuation.

This bathroom sign dilemma does get confusing, especially when you consider that "men's room" is correct when "boy's room" is not (you can have a group of boys, but not a group of mens). Our suggestion is to leave out the apostrophe to remove the possessive, since the users of the bathroom don't own it. The "Boys Room" would then be a room boys could use to go to the bathroom.
  • This was included on the 2002 compilation CD Mullets Rock!, an album celebrating one of the most embarrassing hairstyles of all time and bands that wore them.

  • Albert originally recorded this as a Portuguese-language bolero, which became a major hit in latin America in 1975.
  • This song made headlines in 1999 when an Indonesian army leader sang it at a formal dinner to describe his position on the unrest in East Timor (A former Portuguese colony that was annexed by Indonesia in 1976. This love is so dangerous
But I kinda like the thrill
    It’s like a sugar rush
It’s only the way you make me feel
    I didn't see you coming
    But you broke me down

    'Cause you got some ?
Walk up like I know you
    Bald head and your tattoos
    One smile and, oh

    I gotta admit you’re fly
And I love it how you talk babe
    Getting all in my mind
Running it like a field play
    I didn’t see you coming
    But you broke me down
    'Cause you got some ?
Walk up like I know you
    Bald head and your tattoos
    Damn

This is ain’t no ordinary boy
This is ain’t no ordinary boy
See the funny thing about you
You got me doing things I wouldn’t do
    You ain’t no ordinary boy
    You gon’ be trouble (oh)
    You gon’ be trouble (oh)
    You gon’ be trouble

I deep down know I, should be good
    I am blind
    You’re the kinda guy
That always got all these girls running after you
Do I entertain or play with you
    Or just be cool

    Cause you ?
Walk up like I know you
    Bald head and your tattoos
    One smile and, oh

    Don’t slip
I think I’m about to find
    So close
Wrapped up in the heat of it all
    I’ve had the fantasies
    Of how it’s gonna be

    'Cause you got ?
You walk up like I know you
    Bald head and your tattoos

Yo, got Henny in the cup, Jenny knows what's up
She with a real one not pretending to be tough
Got three cases, might have a warrant I don't know about
Beef I don't know about, weed I can’t go without
My money used to pile up every beginning of the month
Unconditional love, in the beginning it was lust
Hustler, shooter, was a dealer on the block
Now my future’s on top no longer dealing with the thots
I don’t go nowhere without the handle
Like I heard Lil' Boosie was out in Louisiana
Got friends in the fed, some dead over drugs
Fucking with me it’s high-risk but she still in love (we in love baby)
Benny Medina might wanna pay me to leave ya
I’m bad for your image, the ghetto menacing diva
‘cause some say Nas is trouble
We all in, just ignore them nice guys is boring, I got you

  • This song finds J.Lo yearning for a man who she believes is her dream lover. However, she recognizes the imminent complications of a troublesome romance. The song title is pronounced "trouble."
  • Nas adds some rhymes to the track, rapping about leaving the streets behind and settling down with his newfound love. The two artists previously joined forces on the 2002 song, "I'm Gonna Be Alright." when Nas replaced 50 Cent on the radio version.
  • The song samples the sax solo from Tom Scott and the California Dreamers' 1967 jazz cover of Jefferson Airplane's "Today." The sax solo was famously borrowed by Pete Rock and C.L. Smooth for their classic tune, "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)" as well as by Lupe Fiasco for his 2012 single "Around My Way (Freedom Ain't Free)."

She's a good girl, loves her mama
    Loves Jesus and America too
She's a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend too

It's a long day living in Reseda
There's a freeway runnin' through the yard
And I'm a bad boy 'cause I don't even miss her
I'm a bad boy for breakin' her heart

    And I'm free, Free Fallin'
    Yeah I'm free, free fallin'

All the vampires walkin' through the valley
    Move west down Ventura boulevard
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
All the good girls are home with broken hearts

    And I'm free, free fallin'
    Yeah I'm free, free fallin'
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin', now I'm

I want to glide down over Mulholland
I want to write her name in the sky
Gonna free fall out into nothin'
Gonna leave this world for a while

    And I'm free, free fallin'
    Yeah I'm free, free fallin'

    Free Fallin'
  • Jeff Lynne, famous for his work in ELO, produced the Full Moon Fever album and wrote this song with Tom Petty early in their collaboration. According to liner notes in Petty's Playback box set, he and Jeff Lynne were playing some elaborate stuff on the keyboard that all started with three simple chords. Lynne suggested that Tom stop all the hard stuff and just sing some words to those three chords, and he came up with "She's a good girl... loves her mama..." just to make Jeff smile, and they kept going from there. Petty says that it was Lynne who came up with the title, but it took Tom a little while before he figured out the best way to sing the phrase.
  • Mike Campbell is The Heartbreakers' guitarist. He has also produced and written the music for many of their songs, as well as "The Boys of Summer" and "The Heart Of The Matter" for Don Henley. Mike told us about working with Jeff Lynne: "When we did that first record with Jeff Lynne, Full Moon Fever, that was an amazing time for me because it was mostly just the three of us - me and Tom and Jeff - working at my house. Jeff Lynne is an amazing record-maker. It was so exciting for a lot of reasons. First of all, our band energy in the studio had gotten into kind of a rut, we were having some issues with our drummer and just kind of at the end of our rope in terms of inspiration - having a lot of trouble cutting tracks in the studio.

This project came along and really we were just doing it for fun at the beginning, but Jeff would come in and every day he would blow my mind. It was so exciting to have him and Tom come over and go, 'OK, here's this song,' and then Jeff would just go. I'd never seen this done before, he'd say, 'OK, here's what we're going to do: Put a drum machine down. Now put up a mic, we're going to do some acoustic guitars. Put up another mic, were going to do a keyboard. OK, here's an idea for the bass. Mike, let's try some guitar on this. I've got an idea for a background part here...'

Sure enough, within five or six hours, the record would be done, and we'd just sit back and go, 'How the f-ck did you do that?' We were used to being in the studio and like 'OK, here's how the song goes' and everybody would set up to play and just laboriously run the song into the ground, and it usually got worse and worse from trying to get the groove and the spirit and trying to get a performance out of five guys at once. This guy walked in and he knew exactly how to put the pieces together, and he always had little tricks, like with the background vocals how he would slide them in and layer them, and little melodies here and there. Tom and I were soaking it up. Pretty amazing, a very exciting time, like going to musical college or something." (Read more in our interview with Mike Campbell.)
  • In a 2006 interview with Esquire magazine, Petty said: "Free Fallin' is a very good song. Maybe it would be one of my favorites if it hadn't become this huge anthem. But I'm grateful that people like it."
  • The lyrics deal with Los Angeles culture, mentioning actual places in the area: Reseda, Mulholland and Ventura Boulevard. It implies that the people of L.A. will casually use others for personal gain, as the singer has just dumped a girl and doesn't even miss her.
  • The video may have been ahead of its time in that it featured skateboarding before the X Games existed and action sports went mainstream. Legendary skater Mark "Gator" Rogowski appears in the video.
  • Petty and the Heartbreakers played this to close out their set at the halftime show of the Super Bowl in 2008. The song turned out to be appropriate for the New England Patriots, who were undefeated going into the game and led at halftime, only to lose at the end to the New York Giants. In 2002, when the Patriots won their first Super Bowl, the featured song at halftime was "Beautiful Day" by U2.
  • A live version by John Mayer returned this song to the US Hot 100 in July 2008.
  • Petty played this on Saturday Night Live on May 20, 1989 along with "Runnin' Down A Dream." (thanks, John - Colorado Springs, CO)
  • The song achieved its highest position on the UK singles chart to date in May 2012 after being covered by contestant Max Milner on the music talent show The Voice. It previously peaked at #64 in 1989.
  • Petty and Lynne wrote and recorded "Free Fallin'" in just two days, the first tune completed for Full Moon Fever. "We had a multitude of acoustic guitars," Petty told Rolling Stone of the song's Byrds-y feel. "So it made this incredibly dreamy sound."

  • Carey wrote the lyrics, in which she sings about a guy who takes care of her - a "Sugar Daddy." Carey was married to Sony executive Tommy Mottola from 1993-1998.
  • This was Carey's first single released by Virgin Records. She left Sony in 2001 and signed a 5 album deal with Virgin for $80 million. It didn't work out well, and in early 2002, Virgin paid Carey $28 million to break the contract and leave the label. Later that year, she signed with Island/Def Jam, where she released her next album, Charmbracelet.
  • When it was first released, this didn't chart, so Virgin Records responded by cutting the price of the single to 49 cents, which ensured its chart success. They did not want their first single with Carey to be a flop.
  • Carey had a nervous breakdown a few weeks after this was released. She had just finished a tour to promote her first movie, Glitter, when she had to be hospitalized.
  • A remix featuring rappers Ludacris and Da Brat is included on the album.
  • This samples the 1984 Cameo hit, "Candy." Larry Blackmon, the lead singer of Cameo, is in the video. Carey wanted to sample "Firecracker" by The Yellow Magic Orchestra on this, but her label couldn't get the rights to it in time and "Candy" was used instead.

  • At a concert, The Reverend explained that this song is about a real band called The Loco Gringos that used to play in California. They had a lot of character, and would literally bring "5 bales of hay" to decorate the set; they cruised town in a "Cadillac Hearse" and had a tour bus painted like the Mexican flag; they lived in a house they called "Gringo Manor;" and there was a guy who would sell corndogs at their shows, which explains the line, "Hey there, Pablo, whatcha got in the bag?"

    Fall in

    Goodnight my love
Goodbye the feeling of breathing you into my life
I ran with the wind in my face

I flew with my father when I was allowed
I felt like a hero when I was with you
    Those days I felt God
They were far They were few
    They were mine

    Goodnight my babies
Goodbye the memories of showing my pride and my joy.
    You are the angels
    A world spinning forward
You are the reason I'll never need more
I felt like a great man when I was with you
    Those days I felt honor
    They were far
    They were few
    They were mine

    Fall out

    Goodnight my friends
Goodbye the dreams that all danced their way into my life
    The horse of forever
    We rode in our youth
We walked into heaven through hell in these boots
I feel a great love while I'm here in your arms
    You were all brothers
    And fathers and sons
    You were mine

Now I can finally see the light
I can finally see you in the night

    Anchor Lyrics

I stand with a blank expression now
    And I can't believe myself
    Would someone tell me how
    Did I get here

    I am walking
    Changing slowly
    I am chasing
    Climbing closer

I know that I'll never be alone
You will never let me go
    You are my Anchor
Hold my hand while I'm sinking in the sand
    No one else could understand
    You are my anchor

It seems that I lost track of time
And I can't believe my mind
    Would you save me if
    I reached out to you

    I am waiting
    Watching, standing
    I am reaching
    Climbing closer

I know that I'll never be alone
You will never let me go
    You are my anchor
Hold my hand while I'm sinking in the sand
    No one else could understand
    You are my anchor

    Anchor yeah

Can you hear me, hear me
    Can you hear me

  • Lead singer Jason Wade: "I didn't realize it while I was writing this, but someone pointed out that the stanza "Hold my hand/ While I'm sinking in the sand/ No one else would understand/ You are my anchor" can be taken two ways: You can love someone, but they can bring you down, too." Bouncing Off The Walls Lyrics

I'm Bouncing Off The Walls again (whoa),
And I'm looking like a fool again (whoa),
    I threw away my reputation,
One more song for the radio station.

I'm bouncing off the walls again (whoa),
And I'm looking like a fool again (whoa),
Waking up on the bathroom floor,
Pull myself back together just to fall once more.

And my heart's beating out of my chest (whoa),
And this town is still making me sick (whoa),
And every penny from my last paycheck,
    I've loaned on you.

I'm bouncing off the walls again (whoa),
And I'm looking like a fool again (whoa),
So go ahead and take a picture,
And hang it up so you can tear me down.

    I don't care (whoa),
    Cause I'm still here (whoa),
And I've got nothing left to loose,
With all the years I've wasted on you!
    (Go, go, go)

Momma and daddy's got the best cocaine,
Ritalin is never gonna be the same,
Twenty four hours on an empty brain,
I got my finger on the trigger and you're in my way.

I'm bouncing off the walls again (whoa),
And I'm looking like a fool again (whoa),
    I threw away my reputation,
One more song for the radio station.

I'm bouncing off the walls again (whoa),
And I'm looking like a fool again (whoa),
And I'm bouncing off the walls again (whoa),
And I'm looking like a fool again,
I'm bouncing off the walls again.

    Bouncing Off The Walls
  • Two versions of this song were recorded. The first was mixed and produced by Matt Wallace for the band's debut album Start Static. The second, mixed by Mark Trombino, had a shorter running time and was used as the band's first single.
  • This was featured in the movies American Wedding (2003) and Van Wilder (2002). Three other Sugarcult songs were used in Van Wilder: "Stuck in America" "Saying Goodbye" and "How Does It Feel."

    A.N.I.C Lyrics

Another day wasted out of time
I can't get out of this
    Altered state of mind
    I'm going overboard
    My conscience meets decline
    Into Reality
I know this can't be fine

    [Chorus]
    Cause I'm all messed up
    Making prefect nonsense
Drowning in my doubt too well
    Cause I'm all messed up
Going nowhere fast but circles in my mind
    So blind

Who are these voices in my head
I can't go on like this
    Living like the dead
    I haven't slept so long
    Feeling sad I dread
    I'm talking to myself
    Forgot what I just said

    [Chorus]
Well I hold my only enemy as closely as a friend
And I sold my own reality to further my descent

Self-destruction taking over it's so easy to pretend
Introduction to this nightmare may never end

Can anyone help me drag my heels
    I'm running overtime
I can't hold down my meals
    My mind is racing by
    Staring blankly feels
    Like pulling out my teeth
    While this engine winds

    A.N.I.C
  • On their DVD Sake Bombs And Happy Endings, lead singer Deryck Whibley claims this is their special "love" song dedicated to Anna Nicole Smith, who was the 1993 Playboy Playmate of the Year and had her own reality show. Smith died from a drug overdose on February 8, 2007, but was very much alive and in the public eye when this song was recorded. The band stopped performing the song after her death. • A.N.I.C stands for Anna Nicole Is a C--t. (thanks, Travis - Calgary, Canada)
  • This was released on the limited edition of Does This Look Infected as "A**hole." (thanks, Nicholas - Austria)
