Pearl Hart Lyrics

Lady Pearl in jail lady Pearl in jail
You'll rise
Lady Pearl in jail lady Pearl in jail
You'll fight

A letter from her mother now dying in her bed
Get on home quickly with the medicine
No money in her pocket no wheels to go ahead
She grabbed her colt 44 and

Went along the mountain side
Mama love I'm on my way don't you cry
I'll make it just in time
Mama love I'm on my way don't you cry
Please hold on

The young lady Pearl was dressed
In a man's jeans and a shirt
A stage coach was stopped
And robbed were three passengers
Gave each of them a dollar
Enough for them to eat
Then she disappeared down south and

Went along the mountain side
Mama love I'm on my way don't you cry
I'll make it just in time
Mama love I'm on my way don't you cry

Lady Pearl in jail lady Pearl in jail
You'll rise
Lady Pearl in jail lady Pearl in jail
You'll fight

Pearl Hart
  • Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies tells the tales of several different American outlaws and gunslingers of the 19th century. This song tells the true story of the noble lady outlaw Pearl Hart, who held up a stagecoach to buy medicine for her dying mother. Armed with a Colt 44, Pearl netted $430. Volbeat vocalist and guitarist Michael Poulsen told BraveWords.com how he learned of Pearl Hart's story: "I started writing those kinds of lyrics and I locked myself into this bubble. It is a process where I read a lot of books and get inspired by movies. When it comes to Pearl Hart, she was a character that I was reading about way back. I had forgotten all about her, but when I started writing material for this new album, I wanted not only to bring up some of the legendary male gunslingers; I wanted to look into the shady ladies as well. I remembered reading about Pearl Hart, so I got back to some of the old books and there she was."

    Fever Lyrics

    Fever where'd you run to
    Fever where'd you run to
    Acting out of certainty
A fever let me live a dream
    Fever, how much slept on
    No one misbehave too
    Fever let me sun screw
Wouldn't leave you if I could
    Fever

    Fever 'cause I’m breaking
    Fever got me aching
    Fever how will you explain
    Break it down again
    Fever got me guilty
Just go ahead and kill me
    Fever how will you explain
    Break it down again

    Fever can you hear me
    Fever can you hear me
You shook me like I never been
Now show me how to love again

It used to be a blessing
    But fever got me stressing
    Realizing I am the played
But fever let me play the game

    Fever 'cause I’m breaking
    Fever got me aching
    Fever how will you explain
    Break it down again
    Fever got me guilty
Just go ahead and kill me
    Fever why won't you explain
    Break it down again

Loud if the cold get loud in your eyes
    Because oh so rising rise
You know not to leave her
Loud if the cold get loud in your eyes
    Because oh so rising rise
    You know not leave her

  • After the Black Keys had finished touring El Camino in January 2013, the pair headed to the Key Club studio in Benton Harbor to record an album's worth of songs on Sly Stone's old console. "We left the building once in two weeks," guitarist Dan Auerbach recalled to NME. "It felt like we were on a ship in the ocean."

The band felt that they'd unnecessarily rushed the process and only retained two cuts from the sessions for their Turn Blue album - this song and "Gotta Get Away."
  • This was released as the first single from Turn Blue. The Black Keys gave the song's first UK airing on XFM's Evening Show with Georgie Rogers. "Ultimately I think it's something different than anything we've done before," drummer Patrick Carney told Georgie. "It's a pretty diverse album and a little bit more psychedelic than the last record."

"It always feels strange releasing a single because you have to separate the song from the whole album and you kind of listen to a song out of context for a few weeks," he added. "That's the part I have always had trouble wrapping my head around because for Dan and I, our albums are meant to be listened to as albums. I'm excited for people to hear the song. I'm more excited for people to hear the whole album."
  • The song's music video features Dan Auerbach as a televangelist, whilst Patrick Carney nods along approvingly on the side. The clip was directed by photographer Theo Wenner, who is the son of Rolling Stone co-founder and publisher Jann Wenner.

Auerbach urges his followers to call his donation hotline number - 1 (646) 397-6172 , which flashes at the bottom of the screen. Try dialing it for a largely indecipherable pre-recorded message, which turns out to be Patrick Carney, posing as New Age act Quartzazium, prank-calling the Black Keys' own label, Nonesuch.
  • The Black Keys felt freed of the need to write hit singles for Turn Blue, but this still became radio hit. Auerbach told the BBC: "We made five albums without once ever thinking about a single and then we wrote 'Tighten Up' and it got played on radio and changed our career. So from then we started looking at it as a challenge."

"So when we were writing 'Fever,' we wanted it to be catchy," he continued. "We weren't thinking 'this is a radio hit' but it was like 'the melody is catchy, let's do things that would make it even catchier.'"

    Once there was a way,
    To get back homeward.

    Once there was a way

  • This song was based on a 17th century poem by Thomas Dekker called Golden Slumbers Kiss Your Eyes:

    Golden slumbers kiss your eyes
Smiles awake you when you rise
Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
    Rock them, rock them, lullaby
Care is heavy, therefore sleep you
You are care, and care must keep you
Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry
And I will sing a lullaby
    Rock them, rock them, lullaby
  • Paul McCartney wrote this on his stepsister's piano. He saw the song "Golden Slumbers" in her songbook and, unable to read music, made up his own using most of the original lyrics.
  • According to Mark Lewisohn's The Beatles Recording Sessions, McCartney recorded this song on July 2, 1969, a day after Lennon suffered injuries from a car accident in Scotland that left him in a hospital until July 6th. So Lennon did not perform on this song. George Harrison played bass guitar as Paul was playing piano.
  • Recorded as one song with "Carry That Weight," this is part of a suite of songs at the end of Abbey Road. It was the last album The Beatles recorded, although it was released before Let It Be.

Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) Lyrics

You call me out upon the waters
The great unknown where feet may fail
And there I find You in the mystery
    In oceans deep
    My faith will stand

And I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
    When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Your grace abounds in deepest waters
    Your sovereign hand
    Will be my guide
Where feet may fail and fear surrounds me
You've never failed and You won't start now

So I will call upon Your name
And keep my eyes above the waves
    When oceans rise
My soul will rest in Your embrace
For I am Yours and You are mine

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
    Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
    Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior

Spirit lead me where my trust is without borders
Let me walk upon the waters
    Wherever You would call me
Take me deeper than my feet could ever wander
And my faith will be made stronger
In the presence of my Savior

    Oceans (Where Feet May Fail)
  • This song by the Australian worship band Hillsong United tells the story, as recounted in Matthew 14 v22-33, of Peter being called by Jesus to walk on the water. The disciple did so, but temporarily lost faith and started to sink, so he was forced to call on Jesus to rescue him. According to Hillsong it's, "about stepping into the unknown and a song about faith and trust."

For another song with a similar theme, check out Britt Nicole's "Walk on the Water."
  • The vocalist is Taya Smith, a newcomer to the Hillsong team. She sung the whole song in one take.
  • This debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 dated February 2014. It wasn't the first Hillsong song to reach the US singles chart – a version of Darlene Zschech's "Shout to the Lord" was performed by the by the remaining eight contestants of American Idol and a Gospel choir on the reality singing show in 2008 and debuted at #43 on the Hot 100 the following week.
  • This won Song of the Year at the 2014 Gospel Music Association's Dove Awards. Hillsong United took five honors in total at the ceremony, including artist of the year.
  • The song spent a record-breaking 45 straight weeks at #1 on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs survey until it was bumped from the summit by Carrie Underwood's "Something in the Water." The previous best had been Mercy Me's "Word of God Speak," which spent 23 weeks at #1 in 2003.

  • The tracks on Rise of the Lion were inspired by letters sent by Miss May I fans, which the band hadn't been able to reply to. Vocalist Levi Benton explained to AbsolutePunk : "That song is the heartbreak one. And it's so crazy because all the letters we get from fans that are touched in a way that the song wasn't even written for and that's what I think is amazing about it. We've had people say 'My wife left me', 'My girlfriend left me' 'and it's helped me in this way.'"

"We've never really written a heartbreak song before," Benton added. "We've written vague songs that could be about that, but you never really know. This one is straight forward. Boom."

    Pardon Me Lyrics

    A decade ago
I never thought I would be
    At twenty-three
On the verge of spontaneous combustion
    Wo-is-me

But I guess that it comes with the territory
An ominous landscape of never ending calamity
    I need you to hear
I need you to see that I have had all that I can take
And exploding seems like a definite possibility to me

So Pardon Me while I burst into flames
Pardon me while I burst into flames
I've had enough of the world and it's people's mindless games
So pardon me while I burn and rise above the flame
Pardon me, pardon me, I'll never be the same

    Not two days ago
I was having a look in a book
And I saw a picture of a guy fried up above his knee
    I said, 'I can relate?'
Cause lately I've been thinking of combustication
    As a welcomed vacation
From the burdens of the planet earth

Like gravity, hypocrisy, and the perils of being in 3-D
    And thinking so much differently

So pardon me while I burst into flames
I've had enough of the world and it's people's mindless games
So pardon me while I burn and rise above the flame
Pardon me, pardon me, I'll never be the same

Like gravity, hypocrisy, and the perils of being in 3-D
    And thinking so much differently

    Pardon Me
  • Lead singer Brandon Boyd: "I was in a bookstore, browsing through an old Life magazine, when I saw a picture of what the article called spontaneous human combustion. There were an old guy's legs and shoes, perfectly intact - then, right around his knee area, was just a pile of charred ashes. I was going through some turmoil in my life, both good and bad, and the image struck a chord, so I wrote a song about it." (thanks, Tim - Pittsburgh, PA)
  • The singles from Make Yourself were released in the order of "Pardon Me," then "Stellar," then "Drive," but ironically on the charts, "Pardon Me" peaked at #3, "Stellar" peaked at #2, and "Drive" peaked at #1.
  • During an episode of Mad TV, Incubus played this as the show was wrapping up. Each member wore Mullets; Jose put pillows in his shirt to make him look fat, Brandon pulled off part of his pants, and Kilmore had a really long Goatee. (thanks, Tim - Pittsburgh, PA, for all above)

    Everyday Glory Lyrics

In the house where nobody laughs
    And nobody sleeps
In the house where love lies dying
    And the shadows creep
    A little girl hides, shaking,
With her hands on her ears
Pushing back the tears, 'til the pain disappears

    Mama says some ugly words
    Daddy pounds the wall
They can fight about their little girl later
Right now they don't care at all
    No matter what they say...
    No matter what they say...

    Everyday people
    Everyday shame
    Everyday promise
    Shot down in flames

    Everyday sunrise
    Another everyday story
    Rise from the ashes
    A blaze of Everyday Glory

In the city where nobody smiles
    And nobody dreams
    In the city where desperation
    Drives the bored to extremes

    Just one spark of decency
    Against a starless night
One glow of hope and dignity
A child can follow the light
    No matter what they say
    No matter what they say...

    If the future's looking dark
We're the ones who have to shine
If there's no one in control
We're the ones who draw the line
Though we live in trying times
We're the ones who have to try
Though we know that time has wings
We're the ones who have to fly

  • The lyrics, "Rise from the ashes and blaze" refer to the mythological death and rebirth of the Phoenix.
  • Geddy Lee (from the Bass Player Online archives): "This song ended up being an analog-tape mix. For the last few years I've mixed only to digital, because I figured it was just a better tape recorder. But certain songs have a heavier midrange content, and on playback the analog recorder softens the midrange a bit, giving it a more likeable sound. It's not as efficient-sounding in terms of the top and bottom end, but it's just nicer to listen to." (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington, for above 2)

    And I'll climb

Merciless, the magistrate turns 'round, frowning
and who's the fool who wears the crown
Go down in your own way

  • This fades into "You'll Never Walk Alone," which is a song from Carousel, a musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein. However, the song appears to have been recorded at a soccer match, hence the cheers and chanting at the end. This is because Liverpool fans use this as their anthem. Shogun Lyrics

Won't walk the earth a specter
Won't hold my tongue from lashing out
This is my writ of honor
Drawn by the blood that I have shed
    The beasts will soon assemble
    Conjoining in their putrid flesh
    Their hearts don't beat desire
    They pump violence and poison

    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Death's embracing, all is ending
    Death's embracing, all is ending

Time will not heal all of your pain
I cannot wait for it all to come crashing
    Down

    The monsters walk among us
Leeching the blood out from what's good
    Infecting at transmission
    Swallowing innocence from life
Our time has come to stand forth
The wretched womb from which they feed
    Behold the loathsome demons
Send them into the hell they made

    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Death's embracing, all is ending
    Death's embracing, all is ending

    [Chorus]
Time will not heal all of your pain
I cannot wait for it all to come crashing
Down on your face, ripping your veins out
Your insides win and kill you from within

And the seas will rise as serpents
Spawned from the mouth of earth's surface
Soon the skies will fall fast, burning
Open wide and eat the suffering

    The pulse is now quickening
    Softly, it's painstaking
Look within to calm the storm
    Raging inside the form

    There's no turning back

For I'm witness to the changing

Take all you have brought to sacrifice
For you will lose much more
If you succeed in this battle
You still will lose so much more

    The pulse is now quickening
    Softly, it's painstaking
Look within to calm the storm
    Raging inside the form

    There's no turning back

For I'm witness to the changing

Take all you have brought to sacrifice
For you will lose much more
If you succeed in this battle
You still will lose so much more

    [Repeat: x4]
Time has come to face all evil

Now the seas rise up as serpents
Spawned from the mouth of earth's surface
As the skies now fall fast burning
Open wide and face the suffering

The inferno spews out hell's horde
Casting the flames upon our world
As death eclipses all the light
We make our last stand, 'til death: fight

Time will not heal all of your pain
I cannot wait for it all to come crashing

    Shogun
  • Asked by About.com what inspired the title of Trivium's fourth album, frontman Matt Heafy explained: "The reason we picked that word is because when you think of a word like shogun, it sparks all this vivid imagery and storytelling, especially when you look into the definition. It's the highest ranking military general in Japanese times. We really dug it. We felt it was an appropriate name for the album."
  • The epic title track is the Trivium song that Heafy is most proud of. He explained to Kerrang! magazine February 1, 2014: "It's one of the most epic tracks we have. It's 12 minutes long, it's a fan favourite and it's off the most technical album we've done, with the most parts and most dimensions. 'Shogun' has everything we do as a band, all stuffed into one track."

"We played it live recently and one girl was crying, while this other dude was shaking his head in disbelief that we were playing it," he continued. "It's a song that, we didn't say will never play it, but it seems like we never would."

There is a town in North Ontario
    Dream comfort memory to spare
And in my mind I still need a place to go
    All my changes were there

Blue, blue windows behind the stars
    Yellow moon on the rise
Big birds flying across the sky
    Throwing shadows on our eyes

    Leave us

    Helpless, helpless, helpless, helpless
Babe, can you hear me now?
The chains are locked and tied across the door
    Baby, sing with me somehow

Blue, blue windows behind the stars
    Yellow moon on the rise
Big birds flying across the sky
    Throwing shadows on our eyes

    Leave us

    Helpless
  • As told in Neil Young: Long May You Run: The Illustrated History , this song is about the town of Omemee in northern Ontario. In 1949, Neil's parents moved there with him when he was just four years old. Young describes it as "a nice little town. Sleepy little place... Life was real basic and simple in that town. Walk to school, walk back. Everybody knew who you were. Everybody knew everybody."
  • More so than any other song, "Helpless" touches on Young's earliest childhood memories. Young came down with polio by age six, prompting his parents to spend a year in Florida hoping the warmer weather would speed his cure. Ten years after this came the Young's divorce, from which Neil stayed with his mother while his father kept his brother Bob and later remarried. So, typical for Neil Young, the memories represented here are bittersweet.
Speaking of his family, most people forget that Neil's father, Scott Young, was a celebrity in his own right! Scott Young was a career journalist and writer, who started out in the Winnipeg Free Press and writing for other magazines and newspapers. He also wrote books - over three dozen, in fact - mostly boy's adventure/sports stories. And to round that out, his was a familiar face on Canadian TV. So it came as a surprise to him that his son's fame would eclipse his own to such an extent; he was happy with it anyway.
  • Young sang this live at "The Last Waltz" - The Band's farewell concert. As well as The Band themselves he was accompanied on vocals by Joni Mitchell. It is amusing to see Robbie Robertson and Rick Danko from The Band come in too early for the first chorus and then burst out laughing. You can see this clearly on the film as they accompany Neil Young. (thanks, Dan - Auckland, New Zealand)
  • In 2011, Neil Young performed the song with popular indie band Arcade Fire at the Bridge School Benefit Concert.
  • An alternate version appears on Neil's Archives Volume 1, featuring a much more prominent harmonica.
  • Various artists have released covers of the song, notably among them Nick Cave and Patti Smith.
  • This has remained one of Young's standby live songs throughout his career.

    Marlene On The Wall Lyrics

Even if I am in love with you
All this to say, what's it to you?
Observe the blood, the rose tattoo
Of the fingerprints on me from you

    Other evidence has shown
That you and I are still alone
We skirt around the danger zone
And don't talk about it later

    Marlene watches from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As the records the rise and fall
    Of every soldier passing

But the only soldier now is me
I'm fighting things I cannot see
I think it's called my destiny
    That I am changing

    Marlene On The Wall

I walk to your house in the afternoon
By the butcher shot with the sawdust strewn
"Don't give away the goods too soon"
Is what she might have told me

    Marlene watches from the wall
Her mocking smile says it all
As the records the rise and fall
Of every man who's been here

But the only one here now is me
I'm fighting things I cannot see
I think it's called my destiny
    That I am changing

    Marlene On The Wall
  • Vega wrote this about coping with loneliness; she finds comfort by looking up to a poster of Marlene Dietrich on the wall. Vega really did have a poster of Dietrich on her wall. She explained in SongTalk magazine: "That was a truthful song. The lines came out of my life. But you want to be careful, too, because you don't want to get into 'Oh, my boyfriend left me...' I have a problem with specifically confessional songwriting. I think you have to craft it in some way. I don't think you can come on stage and blurt out your innermost feelings. My niece can blurt out her innermost feelings. She's four years old. I wouldn't want to pay $25 to go see her do that. You need to put it in a form. Although it is truthful, you have to give it some respect, or a certain kind of dignity, by putting it into a kind of form. Because these people are not my friends. They're paying to see a show, some form of entertainment. So I'm not gonna sit there and talk to them like Ronee Blakely in Nashville."
  • Marlene Dietrich was a German actress who became an international film star in the 1930's. During World War II, she put her movie career on hold in order to entertain US troops, a move that won her the Medal of Freedom, the highest military award a civilian can receive. Dietrich was 90 years old when she died in 1992.
  • Vega told SongTalk that this song always seemed "A little wide of mark, somehow." Said Vega: "It's accessible and people do like it, but for me, personally, inside myself, I feel I had something in mind, and I kind of did it, it was stylish, it was interesting, but I didn't feel it was quite the bulls-eye that some of the others were. The idea of using a poster as a reference point is a very pop idea. It's a song about Marlene Dietrich. You kind of get that from it, or it's a song about a relationship."
  • This was Vega's first single. It did well in the UK, but didn't get noticed in America. Vega, who is from New York, found success in the US 2 years later with her album Solitude Standing, which contained the hit song, "Luka."

    King Of The Underdogs Lyrics

Pick up the pieces that the puzzle made
From scraps of dreams out of focus and frayed
Make up the reasons for the words that were said
From scraps of dreams that trap the screams

Take my place leading the pack
    Back down from my razorback
I dig deeper to bury and find the track

    Runny into the unknown
    Lonely yet I'm not alone
I keep looking to grind a stone

    I am the king
    Underdogs rise
    I am the king
    From the flames
    I am the king
    Underdogs prize

I am the King Of The Underdogs
    You know that's my name

    Sworn to fun discovery
    I still dream imagining
    Beyond the edge recovering

    Underdogs rise from the flame
Feel the sound feet to ground

    Evening Star Lyrics

I traveled to a distant shore
I felt I had to go
An inner voice had called me there
But why I did not know
I saw the Evening Star rise up
    Shining out to sea
And now I understand at last what it means
    What it all means

Evening star I can see the light
Evening star guiding me so bright

    I used to tempt fate
    I couldn't see straight
I faltered through my younger days
Never knowing where I was going
Then something helped me penetrate the haze

Evening star I can see the light
Evening star guiding me so bright

    Now I am stronger
    The haze no longer
    Ruins my future destiny
    Such inspirations and new sensations
Pull up these string ties chasing me

Evening star I can see the light
Evening star guiding me so bright

I'm home once more, much better for
The things that I have found
Much wiser now, so simple how
    Each time I turn around
I see the evening star rise up
    Shining out on me
And now I understand at last what it means
    What it all means

Evening star I can see the light

I Should Have Known Better Lyrics

I Should Have Known Better with a girl like you,
That I would love everything that you do; and I do,
Hey, hey, hey, and I do.

Whoa, oh, I never realized what a kiss could be,
This could only happen to me
Can't you see, can't you see

That when I tell you that I love you, oh,
You're gonna say you love me too,
    Hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo, oh
And when I ask you to be mine,
You're gonna say you love me too

So oh I should realized a lot of things before
If this is love you've got to give me more
Give me more, hey hey hey, give me more

Whoa, oh, I never realized what a kiss could be,
This could only happen to me
Can't you see, can't you see

That when I tell you that I love you, oh,
You're gonna say you love me too,
    Hoo, hoo, hoo, hoo, oh

  • Composed by John Lennon, at first he "hammers the melody on the same note." (The Italian composer Monteverdi discovered the effect of hammering on the same note. He called the style "stile concitato"). Then comes the middle part in long notes. The middle part has a change of keynote, which is unusual with such a change in a middle part. And then the rise in falsetto. Typical of Lennon's songs, there is also a rise of excitement. When you think that the mood will cool a little - when you come to the middle part - the excitement instead increases. (thanks to Johan Cavalli, who is a music historian in Stockholm)
  • The Beatles performed this in their first movie, A Hard Day's Night. It was used in a scene where The Beatles sing it to a group of girls, one of which was played by an actress named Pattie Boyd. This was the first time George Harrison met her - he fell for her and married her a few years later. They divorced in 1977, and Pattie married Harrison's friend Eric Clapton in 1979. That marriage also ended in divorce, but along the way, Pattie inspired some of the most famous songs of all time, including The Beatles' "Something" and Clapton's "Layla."
  • This was done in three takes on Tuesday, February 25, 1964. But it didn't end there - they completely remade it the next day. The take you hear on record is Take 22. (thanks, Ben - Cheverly, MD)
  • John Lennon's vocal was double-tracked to make it stand out.
  • This was released as the B-side of "A Hard Day's Night."
  • Lennon played the harmonica solo.
  • McCartney played a 12-string electric guitar on this track. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • At first, Lennon was proud of the composition, and said in 1964 that the song was one of the three best songs in the film A Hard Days Night. Later on he lost his self-confidence as a lyricist, and would often slag off his own songs as meaningless. He said in 1980 that "I Should Have Known Better" is, "just a song, it doesn't mean a damn thing."

Am I left to die but I can’t give up on you

Held you tightly in my hands

Was it me, will you come to my rescue
Or did I push to far when I turned my back on you

Sit down on the corner just a little crime
When I make my money got to get my dime
Sit down with her baby wind is full of trash
She bold as the street light dark and sweet as hash
Way down in the hollow leavin' so soon
Oh St. Teresa higher than the moon
Reach down for the sweet stuff when she looks at me
I know any man sees you like I see
Follow down the side street movin' single file
    She say

That's where I'll hold you, sleeping like a child
Way down in the hollow, leavin' so soon
Oh, St. Teresa, higher than the moon
Just what I've been needin', feel it rise in me
    She say

Every stone a story, like a rosary
Corner St. Teresa, just a little crime
When I make my money, got to get my dime
Way down in the hollow, leavin' so soon
Oh, St. Teresa, higher than the moon
You called up in the sky
You called up in the clouds
Is there something you forgot to tell me

    St. Teresa
  • This song is about a woman who is down on her luck and trying to support herself and her baby by making money as a prostitute. The song explores how a woman who is overlooked and discarded is still very human and complex.
  • Osborne wrote this with Eric Bazilian, Rob Hyman and Rick Chertoff - the team who produced and played on Cyndi Lauper's first album. Says Bazilian, "On 'St. Teresa,' Joan was responsible for the lion's share of the lyrics, but we all worked through them very meticulously to make sure they made sense. 'St. Teresa' was one that just poured out of her, that was great. 'Right Hand Man' was a similar thing."
  • Bazilian: "St. Teresa started its life as Allman Brothers style Blues, based around a sort of organ riff. It lived that way for a while. I think Joan came in with the verse melody and lyrics written around that type of song, and then at some point the mandolin riff came, but I was still playing it over a kind of Jazz/Waltz/Blues. We tried to cut the song that way and we could never really catch a groove on it, and then one day I said, 'Let me play this mandolin to a click track.' I turned on my sampler with a percussion bank in it and was looking for just a shaker or something I could use for the click. My finger ran into the top key, which happens to be that sample that starts the record. I played the mandolin to that. A very unique rhythmic structure was born."
  • This was nominated for a Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal, but lost to Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know." Morissette also beat out Osborne for Album Of The Year.
  • This was Osborne's second single. It followed up her hit "One Of Us," which was written by Bazilian. (Thanks to Eric Bazilian for speaking with us about this song. For more, check out www.ericbazilian.com.)

    Heroes of Our Time Lyrics

Lost in a dream, finally it seems,
    Emptiness and everlasting madness,
See the sadness grow, watching as we know,
Blinded for our journey for the world,
Call for us, the power in all of us,
So far beyond the blackened sky tonight
    Glorious, forever more in us,
We are victorious, and so alive.

    [Chorus]
We'll all find our sacrifice tomorrow,
Our journey on towards a brighter day,
Silent tears we left behind, still so far away,
    Across the endless sands,
Through the fields of our despair,
Dream for all eternity, we stand, yeah,
    Rise above the universe tonight,
    Starchaser

Fly towards the storm, see the world reborn,
Feel the pain inside, the voice, the sorrow,
Across the distant shores, find the open door,
Stand alone, in judgment for tomorrow.

Years of pain still haunt us all, we saw the last sunrise,
Take me home, in freedom, for a lifetime...
Praying on for the silence, and the last tears will blind,
So glorious, this fight inside, united we stand.

    [Chorus]

Free from this world, here for the last time,
Oceans collide inside of us all,
    Believe who we are,
    The phoenix will guide us,
    Freedom will rise once again.

Save us tonight, the last hope for all of us,
Light-years gone by, we're still holding on,
Save us tonight, a star shines in all of us,
Far beyond our lives, still our glory lives on.

    [Chorus]

Our kingdom come, we stand as one,
And we will live for always evermore

Vanity stings, 'til I die when the holy father hands me my wings
When I was young yo the teacher gave me stanity dreams
Giving me music like drugs and they handed me things, they shoot it up
See me on the TV, the cuties they wanna fuck
Both presidential and plus, they hoop it up
Got more hits in his zip, who want enough
I can go back in time, you be Judge Eato
With my men and ?? I know you thinkin' Neato
Givin' peace to minutes, something like your T-Vo

  • Pharrell Williams was riding high as a producer in the mid 2000s, providing hit singles for the likes of Gwen Stefani, Ludacris, and Beyoncé. However, his debut solo album, a braggadocious rap record titled In My Mind, was a commercial disappointment. Reflecting back on this track during a 2014 interview with GQ magazine, Williams admitted his life at the time was without purpose. "That wasn't joy," he said. "That was just bragging. I wanted to be like Jay. I wanted to be like Puff. Those are their paths. I got my own path. But I didn't know what my path was. I knew that I was meant to do something different. I knew that I needed to inject purpose in my music. And I thought that was my path. I didn't realize that like, from '08 up until now was like, training. Like, keep putting purpose in everything you do. Don't worry about it; just put purpose in there."

All You Need Is Love Lyrics

Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love.

There's nothing you can do that can't be done.
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung.
Nothing you can say, but you can learn
    How to play the game
    It's easy.
Nothing you can make that can't be made.
No one you can save that can't be saved.
Nothing you can do, but you can learn
How to be you in time
    It's easy.

All You Need Is Love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love. Love is all you need.
Love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love.
All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love. Love is all you need.

There's nothing you can know that isn't known.
Nothing you can see that isn't shown.
There's nowhere you can be that isn't where
    You're meant to be
    It's easy.

All you need is love, all you need is love,
All you need is love, love. Love is all you need.
All you need is love. (All together now).
All you need is love. (Everybody).
All you need is love, love. Love is all you need.
    Love is all you need.
    Love is all you need

  • The Beatles played this for the first time on the "Our World" project, the first worldwide TV special. Broadcast in 24 countries on June 25, 1967, the show was 6 hours long and featured music from 6 continents, with The Beatles representing Britain. The Beatles were supposedly recording this live during the show, but they used a prerecorded backing track and John Lennon's vocal was redone a few hours later. Eric Clapton mimed guitar on this during the special.

The concept of the song was born out of a request to bring a song that was going to be understood by people of all nations. The writing began in late May of 1967, with John and Paul working on separate songs. It was decided that John's "All You Need Is Love" was the better choice because of its easy to understand message of love and peace. The song was easy to play, the words easy to remember and it encompassed the feeling of the world's youth during that period.
  • "All You Need Is Love" was a popular saying in the '60s anti-war movement. The song was released in the middle of the Summer of Love (1967). It was a big part of the vibe.
  • John Lennon wrote this as a continuation of the idea he was trying to express in his 1965 song "The Word." John was fascinated by how slogans effect the masses and was trying to capture the same essence as songs like "We Shall Overcome." He once stated, "I like slogans. I like advertising. I love the telly." In a 1971 interview about his song "Power To The People," he was asked if that song was propaganda. He said, "Sure. So was 'All You Need Is Love.' I'm a revolutionary artist. My art is dedicated to change."
  • Musically, this song is very unusual. The chorus is only one note, and the song is in a rare 7/4 tempo. (thanks to Dwight Rounds, author of The Year The Music Died, 1964-1972 )
  • It was not until 1983 and the publication of the in the book John Lennon: In My Life by Pete Shotton and Nicholas Schaffner that it was revealed that John Lennon was the primary composer of the song. It is typical of Lennon: Three long notes ("love -love -love") and the rise of excitement with at first speaking, then recital, then singing, then the climax and finally the redemption. This as opposed to McCartney's conventional verse, verse, middle part, verse or A,A,B,A. Lennon felt that a good song must have a rise of excitement, climax and redeeming. • Ringo's second son, Jason, was born the day this hit #1 in the US. Jason is also a drummer.
  • n the orchestral ending, you can hear pieces of both "Greensleeves," a Bach two-part invention (by George Martin) and Glen Miller's "In The Mood." Royalties were paid to Miller for his contribution.
  • McCartney sang the chorus to The Beatles 1963 hit, "She Loves You" at the end: "She loves you yeah yeah yeah... She loves you yeah yeah yeah"
  • John Lennon's hand-written lyrics for this song sold for 1 Million pounds in the summer of 2005. Lennon left them in the BBC studios after The Beatles' last live TV appearance, and they were salvaged by an employee. (thanks, Ryan - Kansas City, MO)
  • This begins with a clip from the French national anthem, "La Marseillaise," written and composed by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle in Strasbourg on April 25, 1792. Its original name was "Chant de guerre de l'Armee du Rhin" ("Marching Song of the Rhine Army") and it was dedicated to Marshal Nicolas Luckner, a Bavarian-born French officer from Cham. It became the rallying call of the French Revolution and got its name because it was first sung on the streets by troops from Marseille upon their arrival in Paris. Now the national anthem of France, the song was also once the anthem of the international revolutionary movement, contrasting with the theme of The Beatles song. In the late 1970s, Serge Gainsbourg recorded a Reggae version "Aux Armes et cetera," with Robbie Shakespeare, Sly Dunbar and Rita Marley in the choir in Jamaica, which resulted in him getting death threats from veterans of the Algerian War of Independence. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Al and Tipper Gore had this song played at their wedding. They married in 1970 and separated in 2010.
  • George Harrison mentioned this in his 1981 song "All Those Years Ago" with the line, "But you point the way to the truth when you say 'All you need is love.'" Harrison's song is a tribute to John Lennon, who was killed in 1980.
  • This was used in the climactic final episode of the UK sci-fi series The Prisoner, and was the entrance music for Queen Elizabeth II during the UK Millennial celebrations of 1999. It was also sung by choirs across the kingdom in 2002 during the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebration. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • In 2007, this was used in an advertising campaign for Luv's diapers with the lyrics changed to "All You Need Is Luv's." While Beatles songs have been used in commercials before, notably "Revolution" in spots for Nike and "Hello Goodbye" for Target, this peace anthem shilling for diapers didn't go over well with fans who thought it sullied The Beatles legacy. The publishing rights to "All You Need Is Love" and most other Beatles songs are controlled by the Sony corporation and Michael Jackson, which means The Beatles cannot prevent a company from re-recording the song and using it in a commercial.
  • When asked what his favorite lyric is during an interview with NME, John Lennon's son Sean replied: "My list of favorite things changes from day to day. I like when my dad said: 'There's nothing you can know that isn't known/ Nothing you can see that isn't shown/ Nowhere you can go that isn't where you're meant to be.' It seems to be a good representation of the sort of enlightenment that came out of the '60s."

    Mockingbird Lyrics

    Everybody have you heard?
He's gonna buy me a Mockingbird
And if that mockingbird won't sing
He's gonna buy me a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring won't shine
He's gonna surely break this heart of mine
And that's why I keep on tellin' ev'rybody, sayin'
    Wo, wo, wo, wo, wo

    Hear me now and understand
He's gonna find me some peace of mind
And if that peace of mind won't stay
I'm gonna find myself a better way
And if that better way ain't so
I, I, I'll ride with the tide and go with the flow
And that's why I keep on shoutin' in your ear sayin'
    Wo, wo, wo, wo, wo

    Everybody have you heard?
She's gonna buy me a mockingbird
And if that mockingbird won't sing
She's gonna buy me a diamond ring
And if that diamond ring won't shine
She's gonna surely break this heart of mine
And that's why I keep on tellin' ev'rybody, sayin' no, no, no, no,no

    Listen now and understand
She's gonna find me some peace of mind
And if that peace of mind won't stay
I'm gonna find myself a better way
I might rise above , I might go below
I, I, I'll ride with the tide and go with the flow
And that's why I keep on shoutin' in your ears y'all
No, no, no, no, no, no, now, now, baby

    Mockingbird
  • This is based on a traditional American folk song sometimes known as "Hush Little Baby." The song is a lullaby, intended to soothe a young child to sleep with promises of expensive gifts. Northern Mockingbirds were often kept as pets in America, which explains the significance of the lyrics.
  • Bo Diddley used the traditional lyrics for his 1955 song "Bo Diddley," but his song had a completely different arrangement.
  • Inez and Charlie Foxx were brother and sister. In 1974, James Taylor and Carly Simon, who were married at the time, recorded their version, which was also a hit. Country singer Toby Keith recorded it with his teenage daughter Krystal in 2004, and that same year, Eminem made it into a song for his daughter Hailie. Eminem's song veers from the traditional lyrics as he details his struggles to raise his daughter and threatens to break the bird's neck if it doesn't sing.
  • Toby Keith did a duet of this song with his daughter, Krystal, for his 2004 Greatest Hits Volume 2 album.
  • This song is part of a key scene in the 1994 movie Dumb and Dumber , where Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels sing it for musical entertainment.
