Skeletons Lyrics

I can see myself in a broken reflection
This magnifies my imperfection
Beaten down, and I'm crawling, I'm craving affection
A fade out projection
Comfort in violence, suffer in silence
Lost in self deception
Is there no salvation?

Brick by brick I've built this wall
I shut you out to break the fall
I will shed my sins
I'll show you my Skeletons
One by one we cast the stones
Flesh and blood, and broken bones
Burn away the sins
We all have our skeletons

We all have our skeletons

I have lost myself in my addictions
There's no faith in fear or self-destruction
Falling out, falling down
And I'm crawling to you to confess my intentions
Suffer the violence, comfort in silence
Lost in self deception
Is there no salvation?

Brick by brick I've built this wall
I shut you out to break the fall
I will shed my sins
I'll show you my skeletons
One by one we cast the stones
Flesh and blood, and broken bones
Burn away the sins
We all have our skeletons

We all have our skeletons

Brick by brick!

Skeletons!

Brick by brick I've built this wall
I shut you out to break the fall
I will shed my sins
I'll show you my skeletons
One by one we cast the stones
Flesh and blood, and broken bones
Burn away the sins
We all have our skeletons

  • This song finds Jacoby Shaddix in a reflective mood as he implores:

Brick by brick I've built this wall
I shut you out to break the fall
    I will shed my sins
    I'll show you my skeletons

"That comes from a place of secrets," Shaddix told Artist Direct . "You're only as sick as your secrets are. As I'm living this dark life, I tend to shut people out and build this wall between me and them by not reaching back out. If they call me, I don't call them back. If I'm up to no good, I start to isolate. I build this wall around myself. I find myself in this prison, which is not a healthy place to be. There's a comfort for me in isolation, but it's a dysfunction."

"I have to realize we've all got our issues, skeletons, and secrets," he continued. "I always find freedom when I bare everything in myself and all of the darkness. If I get enough strength to break down this wall and be honest, I can be part of."

"Stylistically, I wanted the song to have this snaking groove to it.," Shaddix added. "It's got a tortured vibe to it, but the chorus is so uplifting and epic. That's one of my favorites."

    True Blood Lyrics

Red was the color of her eyes
And she put me in a meditation state
Her skin was white so white
Looked like it had no expiration date
Black is the color of the night
And it's time for feeding and her body waits
There's just something 'bout the demon that she brings out of me
When we raise hell I can't stay away

Aw, give it to me now
    So evil in your dress
It circulates you start to feel it
    Devil in the flesh
Once you start to invoke her spirit
    Got you on the floor
She comes alive when your appearing
    Hungry for some more

I think she's got that True Blood
Every time you're 'round I can smell it in you
    She's got that true blood
I come around and raise the hell out of you
It's that demon, it's so mean, that's got me screaming
Make me wanna build a coffin for two
    She's got that true blood
But baby, I just do it for the thrill out of you
    It makes me say

Now I feel my fever on the rise
In my bones and my body starts to quake
Straight up from my toes to my mind
She controls me but I don't want to escape
All the other ones that have tried
Find out that they have made their final mistake
But when she got a bite of my type
She told me that she found her perfect blood mate

    So evil in your dress
It circulates you start to feel it
    Devil in the flesh
Once you start to invoke her spirit
    Got you on the floor
She comes alive when your appearing
    Hungry for some more

I think she's got that true blood
Every time you're 'round I can smell it in you
    She's got that true blood
I come around and raise the hell out of you
It's that demon, it's so mean, that's got me screaming
Make me wanna build a coffin for two
    She's got that true blood
But baby, I just do it for the thrill out of you
    It makes me say

    Your pheromones invaded my instinct
I start to seem like an animal
Roast me in your perfection, I'm mad, I don't wanna think
'Cause the others wanna burn with me but they don't hold a candle
    It feels like
The others wanna burn with me but they don't hold a candle
    Ooh sometimes it feels like

I think she's got that true blood
Every time you're 'round I can smell it in you
    She's got that true blood
I come around and raise the hell out of you
It's that demon, it's so mean, that's got me screaming
Make me wanna build a coffin for two
    She's got that true blood
But baby, I just do it for the thrill out of you
    It makes me say
Give it to me, that goes to boogie, that goes to high
    Give it to me

    Yeah
    Now that you got me
Tell me what your gonna do with me
    I taste your blood
I found out you was a perfect fit
    Mmm, come on mama
Show me what your working with
    Mmm, come on mama
Go on show me what your working with
Show me what your working with

    Now that you got me
Tell me what your gonna do with me
Cause I can taste your blood
I found out you was a perfect fit
    Mmm, come on mama
Show me what your working with
    I said come on mama
Go on show me what your working with
Show me what your working with

We got that true blood, she got that, she hit me with that

    My Blood Lyrics

That feeling, that doesn't go away just did
And I walked a thousand miles to prove it
And I'm caught in the crossfire of my own thoughts
The color of My Blood is all I see on the rocks
    As you sail from me

    Alarms will ring for eternity
The waves will break every chain on me
    My bones will bleach
    My flesh will flee
So help my lifeless frame to breathe

And God knows, I'm not dying but I breathe now
And God knows, it's the only way to heal now
With all the blood I lost with you
It drowns the love I thought I knew

The lost dreams are buried in my sleep for him
And this was the ecstasy of a love forgotten
And I'm thrown in the gunfire of empty bullets
And my blood is all I see
As you steal my soul from me

    Alarms will ring for eternity
The waves will break every chain on me

And God knows, I'm not dying but I breathe now
And God knows, it's the only way to heal now
With all the blood I lost with you
It drowns the love I thought I knew

And God knows, I'm not dying but I breathe now
And God knows, it's the only way to heal now
With all the blood I lost with you
It drowns the love I thought I knew

And God knows, I'm not dying but I breathe now

    My Blood
  • Most of the tracks on Halcyon are breakup songs penned by Goulding about her former partner, BBC Radio 1 DJ Greg James. However, she wrote this gothic tune about being weakened by somebody emotionally in the midst of a relationship.
  • The song features on the soundtrack of the movie, Divergent. It is one of a quartet of Goulding tunes that are woven into the action of the film. The singer also provided the "musical voice" for lead character Tris Prior (played by Shailene Woodley). "For me, the movie is about a young woman finding herself, transforming herself and becoming powerful on a societal stage," explained director Neil Burger to Entertainment Weekly. "It's an intimate, personal portrait, but on a grand scale. Ellie's music has that very intimate quality. You are in the heart of her characters, in their souls, in their minds. When she sings her voice resonates inside you. Her music was a perfect way to do all that for Tris - to feel what she was feeling inside."

    Shogun Lyrics

Won't walk the earth a specter
Won't hold my tongue from lashing out
This is my writ of honor
Drawn by the blood that I have shed
    The beasts will soon assemble
    Conjoining in their putrid flesh
    Their hearts don't beat desire
    They pump violence and poison

    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Death's embracing, all is ending
    Death's embracing, all is ending

Time will not heal all of your pain
I cannot wait for it all to come crashing
    Down

    The monsters walk among us
Leeching the blood out from what's good
    Infecting at transmission
    Swallowing innocence from life
Our time has come to stand forth
The wretched womb from which they feed
    Behold the loathsome demons
Send them into the hell they made

    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Flesh opens up, blood's retreating
    Death's embracing, all is ending
    Death's embracing, all is ending

    [Chorus]
Time will not heal all of your pain
I cannot wait for it all to come crashing
Down on your face, ripping your veins out
Your insides win and kill you from within

And the seas will rise as serpents
Spawned from the mouth of earth's surface
Soon the skies will fall fast, burning
Open wide and eat the suffering

    The pulse is now quickening
    Softly, it's painstaking
Look within to calm the storm
    Raging inside the form

    There's no turning back

For I'm witness to the changing

Take all you have brought to sacrifice
For you will lose much more
If you succeed in this battle
You still will lose so much more

    The pulse is now quickening
    Softly, it's painstaking
Look within to calm the storm
    Raging inside the form

    There's no turning back

For I'm witness to the changing

Take all you have brought to sacrifice
For you will lose much more
If you succeed in this battle
You still will lose so much more

    [Repeat: x4]
Time has come to face all evil

Now the seas rise up as serpents
Spawned from the mouth of earth's surface
As the skies now fall fast burning
Open wide and face the suffering

The inferno spews out hell's horde
Casting the flames upon our world
As death eclipses all the light
We make our last stand, 'til death: fight

Time will not heal all of your pain
I cannot wait for it all to come crashing

    [Chorus]

    Shogun
  • Asked by About.com what inspired the title of Trivium's fourth album, frontman Matt Heafy explained: "The reason we picked that word is because when you think of a word like shogun, it sparks all this vivid imagery and storytelling, especially when you look into the definition. It's the highest ranking military general in Japanese times. We really dug it. We felt it was an appropriate name for the album."
  • The epic title track is the Trivium song that Heafy is most proud of. He explained to Kerrang! magazine February 1, 2014: "It's one of the most epic tracks we have. It's 12 minutes long, it's a fan favourite and it's off the most technical album we've done, with the most parts and most dimensions. 'Shogun' has everything we do as a band, all stuffed into one track."

"We played it live recently and one girl was crying, while this other dude was shaking his head in disbelief that we were playing it," he continued. "It's a song that, we didn't say will never play it, but it seems like we never would."

    Sacred Love Lyrics

    Take off those working clothes
Put on these high heeled shoes
Don't want no preacher on the TV baby
Don't want to hear the news

Shut out the world behind us
Put on your long black dress
No one's ever gonna find us here
Just leave your hair in a mess
    I've been searching long enough
I begged the moon and the stars above
    For sacred love

I've been up, I've been down
I've been lonesome, in this godless town
You're my religion, you're my church
You're the holy grail at the end of my search
Have I been down on my knees for long enough?
I've been searching the planet to find
    Sacred love

The spirit moves on the water
She takes the shape of this heavenly daughter
She's rising up like a river in flood
The word got made into flesh and blood
The sky grew dark, and the earth she shook
Just like a prophecy in the Holy Book
Thou shalt not covet, thou shalt not steal
Thou shalt not doubt that this love is real
So I got down on my knees and I prayed to the skies
When I looked up could I trust my eyes?
All the saints and angels and the stars up above
They all bowed down to the flower of creation
    Every man every woman
    Every race every nation
It all comes down to this
    Sacred love

Don't need no doctor, don't need no pills
I got a cure for the country's ills
Here she comes like a river in flood
The word got made into flesh and blood
Thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not kill
But if you don't love her your best friend will

All the saints up in heaven and the stars up above
It all comes down, it all comes down
It all comes down to love,

    Take off your working clothes
Put on your long black dress
    And your high heeled shoes
Just leave your hair in a mess

    I've been thinking 'bout religion
I've been thinking 'bout the things that we believe
I've been thinking 'bout the Bible
I've been thinking 'bout Adam and Eve
I've been thinking 'bout the garden
I've been thinking 'bout the tree of knowledge, and the tree of life
I've been thinking 'bout forbidden fruit
I've been thinking 'bout a man and his wife

I been thinking 'bout, thinking 'bout
    Sacred love, sacred loveâ?¦

  • This is the title track from Sting's seventh solo studio album. In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the singer wanted to create an album focused on love. He explained to The Daily Telegraph: "It's a post-September 11 record. I think it really was a watershed. An event like that makes you redefine your craft and question what function you serve in society. If the world's going to hell in a hand basket then, you know, how can you either help that along or stop it I'm 51 and I'm not going to write about dancing particularly, or girlfriends, or cars. There is a place for trivia in pop music. I'm responsible for some of it. But sometimes you've got to get serious. My intention is to create something beautiful and unique and pleasing to people and at the same time tell the truth about how I feel in the world."
  • "I famously made an off-the-cuff comment about tantric sex one day that sped around the world like a digital virus and continues to reverberate even now, seventeen year later," Sting wrote of this song in Lyrics By Sting. "The interpretation that tantra has to do with 'staying power' is of course fatuous, but the idea that sex could be considered a sacred act seemed too much for a world media attuned to the minutiae of trivia. Sex is either scandalous - when, for example, politicians are caught in flagrante delicto - or it's used to sell cars and aftershave. In both cases, eroticism, the most powerful force in our human nature, is devalued to the point of worthlessness."

As for that famous quote, Sting once claimed he and wife Trudie Styler had seven-hour tantric sex sessions. Years later he joked on Inside the Actors Studio that "seven hours includes movie and dinner."

    Heretic Lyrics

    As they search for blood
    All eyes descend on one
    Honest man in chains
    But that don’t matter anyway
    My judgement day

My flesh will feed the demon
No trial, no case for reason
I've been chosen to pay with my life
Mad men define what mad is
Turning witches and saints to ashes
Rising masses marching to find Heretic blood.

    Impose your will on me
    'Til fire sets me free
The flames of hell burn bright
My fate decided by their lies
    Final demise

My flesh will feed the demon
No trial, no case for reason
I've been chosen to pay with my life
Mad men define what mad is
Turning witches and saints to ashes
Rising masses marching to find heretic
    Heretic blood

    Please, don’t leave me
Please, don’t leave me like this
I’ve walked a fragile line and I’ve fallen down
    Please, don’t leave me

    Heretic
  • This was the first song that Avenged Sevenfold wrote for Hail to the King, hence it being a throwback to band's traditional sound. Guitarist Synyster Gates told MusicRadar.com : "It's a little progressive, but we wanted to maintain some space in the arrangement so the drums could shine and the riffs and vocals could breathe."

He added: "This is a lot of guitar, though, some big moments. If you're not the biggest groove fan – and it you're not, you should be – there's still a progressive element. So it's a mix, this song, and it worked out really well."
  • Vocalist M. Shadows is singing here about religious fanaticism and witch hunts. He explained to Kerrang! magazine: "To me, this is about the Salem Witch Trials. It's about the West Memphis Three. It's about being put in jail for life for the clothes you wear and because you have long hair. And it's all based on religion and fantasy, when no-one can just look at the facts for what they are, because they're completely clouded by their love of their religious beliefs. That song is a step back to say, 'You don't have to be at someone's door, ready to burn them without giving them a chance to explain themselves."

    Angel Of Death Lyrics

    Auschwitz, the meaning of pain
The why that I want you to die
    Slow death, immense decay
Showers that cleanse you of your life

    Forced in
    Like cattle
    You run
    Stripped of
    Your life's worth
Human mice, for the Angel Of Death
Four hundred thousand more to die
    Angel of Death
Monarch to the kingdom of the dead

    Sadistic, surgeon of demise
    Sadist of the noblest blood

    Destroying, without mercy
    To benefit the Aryan race

    Surgery, with no anesthesia
Fell the knife pierce you intensely
    Inferior, no use to mankind
Strapped down screaming out to die
    Angel of Death
Monarch to the kingdom of the dead
    Infamous butcher,
    Angel of Death

Pumped with fluid, inside your brain
Pressure in your skull begins pushing through your eyes
    Burning flesh, drips away
Test of heat burns your skin, your mind starts to boil
    Frigid cold, cracks your limbs
    How long can you last
    In this frozen water burial?
    Sewn together, joining heads
    Just a matter of time
    'Til you rip yourselves apart
    Millions laid out in their
    Crowded tombs
    Sickening ways to achieve
    The holocaust
    Seas of blood, bury life
Smell your death as it burns
    Deep inside of you
    Abacinate, eyes that bleed
    Praying for the end of
    Your wide awake nightmare
Wings of pain, reach out for you
His face of death staring down,
    Your blood running cold
    Injecting cells, dying eyes
    Feeding on the screams of
    The mutants he's creating
    Pathetic harmless victims
    Left to die
    Rancid Angel of Death
    Flying free

    Angel Of Death
  • This song is about Josef Mengele (The Angel Of Death), a doctor at Aushwitz who performed gruesome experiments on prisoners during the Holocaust. Many people who don't fully understand metal or Slayer have branded them Neo-Nazis and Satanists, but the song was written by guitarist Jeff Hanneman because he has an interest in World War II. His father landed on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944.
  • "Angel of Death" has become one of Slayer's signature songs and a classic of the thrash metal genre. It is included in all of their live albums and band-produced DVDs. It also appears in the soundtrack to many films, including Gremlins 2, Jackass: The Movie, and the 2005 documentary Soundtrack to War.
  • This was one of Rick Rubin's early productions. Slayer were signed to Rubin's Def Jam label, which also had Beastie Boys (that's how Slayer guitarist Kerry King ended up doing the solo on "No Sleep Till Brooklyn"). Def Jam's output was distributed by Columbia, but they refused to issue this one, so Rubin turned to Geffen, which handled the distribution.
  • Rick Rubin took a different approach to producing this track in order to get a very clean sound. Since Slayer plays very fast, Rubin left the reverb off to keep it from turning to mush. He also boosted the drums, which kept the guitars at bay. He explained in Rolling Stone: "Dave Lombardo is this incredible, unbelievably great drummer. One thing that we did was make the drums louder. The nature of distorted electric guitars is that they sound loud regardless of how loud they are. Whereas drums, because it's a natural instrument, depending on how loud they are in the mix really changes that feeling of how hard they're being hit. If you're in a room with the drums and somebody's hitting them hard, they're much louder. So, psychologically, by making the drums louder, it made everything seem louder."
  • This song has also been covered by other metal bands, including Monstrosity, Apocalyptica, Asinesia, and the Slayer tribute band Dead Skin Mask. Slayer having headlined Ozzfest several times, "Angel of Death" is also found in compilation albums from the annual hard rock festival.
  • How did Slayer come to write a song about Josef Mengele, of all people? In the book Precious Metal: Decibel Presents the Stories Behind 25 Extreme Metal Masterpieces , the interview for Reign in Blood reveals that while the band was touring from their previous album, they did not yet have a tour bus, so they were just driving around in a car, with not much for amusement but paperback books they'd buy at rest stops. Jeff Hanneman ended up reading a book on the topic which sparked his interest.
  • In Precious Metal, Slayer co-lead guitarist Kerry King has this to say on the controversy over this song: "People get this thought in their heads - especially in Europe - and you'll never talk them out of it. They try to talk you into what they're thinking. When you ask them a question and you give them an answer they don't want, they'll be like 'Well, don't you mean...' And I'm like 'No, dude, I don't mean that.' It's just like, wake up."

A mini-essay about controversy: Why does Slayer go through life with such a target on its chest? Dozens of bands produce material that's far gorier. Almost every heavy metal band you can name pins a pentagram or 666 or other "Satanic" imagery to their album cover. Here is the Reign in Blood album cover , which is part of the reason Def Jam's distributor, Columbia Records, refused to release it - compare it to the work of Hieronymus Bosch . As for subject matter, there's a song out there which makes light of violence against women, murder, mutilation, necrophilia, and cannibalism. That song is "I Hold Your Hand in Mine ," by noted satirist Tom Lehrer. Now, where's the protests and picket groups and censorship and album-burning when it comes to Lehrer? Science needs to find out why bands like Slayer draw so much fire while others get a free pass. In the mean time, we're going to have to assume that Slayer is scary while Lehrer and Bosch are not, and so people are reacting based on raw emotions and not on any kind of logic at all.

    Jocko Homo Lyrics

    They tell us that
    We lost our tails
    Evolving up
    From little snails
    I say it's all
    Just wind in sails

    Are we not men
    We are Devo
    Are we not men
    D-E-V-O
    Are we not pins
    We are Devo

    Monkey men all
    In business suits
    Teacher and critics
    All dance the ?

    Are we not men
    We are Devo
    Are we not men
    D-E-V-O
    Are we not pins
    We are Devo

    D-E-VO
    (I must repeat)
    D-E-VO
    (I must repeat)
    D-E-VO
    (I must repeat)
    D-E-VO

    Okay lets go

    Jocko Homo
  • In our interview with Mark Mothersbaugh and Jerry Casale of Devo , Mothersbaugh told us: "'Jocko Homo' was one of the first songs I wrote for the band. The whole song was meant to be a theme song for the theory of de-evolution and for Devo, what we were about. It was meant to lay out the story right there. It was a collection of discussions we had where we sat around in Kent after students had been shot, and decided that what we were seeing happening on the planet, when we looked at the news and read the paper, was not evolution but was more appropriately described as de-evolution."
  • Jocko Homo means "Monkey Man." Mothersbaugh was a student at Kent State University when a friend gave him a pamphlet called "Jocko Homo, Heaven Bound King of the Apes." It was a religious pamphlet debunking evolution, explaining how absurd the idea was that a man would descend from a monkey. The pamphlet was printed in the '30s by a religious zealot from Rogers, Ohio. One of the pictures showed a devil pointing up a staircase that said "2 million years along the stairway to heaven." The devil had 'De-Evolution' written on his chest and was laughing and pointing up the stairs. The stairs had names like slavery, world war, drunkenness, adultery - it kept going with horrible attributes of man.
  • When we spoke with Devo co-founder Jerry Casale, he said: "That was kind of our position statement. It was our mission statement saying, 'Hey look, humans are making up stories about why we're here and how we got here and who we are and what our importance is and it's all basically rubbish, it's absurd. You don't know what's going on, and that's OK. In fact, if you admit you don't know what's going on and you admit there are alternative explanations for things, then you're already better off, and there's a lot of things you won't do because you'd quit believing in ridiculous things that drive you to actions that cause more pain and suffering in the world.' It was kind of a Dada, self-effacing kind of statement, like, 'Look, we're all pinheads here on this planet together.'"
  • Mothersbaugh told us: "The chorus that keeps repeating the 'Are we not men' is directly from the very first Island Of Lost Souls (1932). There were two remakes that were both tepid and not nearly as compelling as the original. The original had a mad scientist on a deserted Pacific Island where he operated on animals - beasts from the jungle, in a room called the House Of Pain. He operates on these beasts to try to raise them up on the evolutionary chart. It's a very painful operation and when he does this, you can hear them screaming in the middle of the night in the House Of Pain.

His biggest success was a female named Lota who used to be a panther, but these animals keep devolving backwards. Lota gets cat claws, and she knows she's devolving. He has to do a painful operation to bring her back again, but in the meantime you see all these characters that are like sub-human, half-animal, half-man creatures that stumble around the jungle. Some of them could hold menial jobs at the House Of Pain. At one point, they were walking in a line around a fire in the woods at night while the doctor's working in the House Of Pain, and they were casting shadows on the side of the House Of Pain, and I saw these shadows of these sub-human creatures just slouching past the wall, and I was like, 'Holy crap, I know all those people, they live here in Akron with me.' That's where the inspiration came from.

The mad scientist would crack a whip standing on a rock and all the animals would come to attention, and he'd go, 'What is the law?' Usually it meant one of them had broken the law, like bad dogs that aren't house trained yet. They would all go in kind of a humble fashion, 'Not to spill blood.' Then he would go 'Are we not men?' and he'd crack the whip again and then he goes, 'What is the law?' and they'd have another law they'd have to repeat like 'Not to eat flesh' or 'Not to walk on all fours.' Then he'd crack the whip again and go 'Are we not men?' So that's where the line came from. There were like, watered down, wussy versions of it in the later Islands Of Dr. Moreau stuff, but that was a really intense movie. If you were sitting in a living room in Akron, Ohio in 1972 with some quack religious pamphlet sitting on your lap, the next thing was easy."
  • Casale said in our interview: "We moved the debate sideways - you believe what you want, but we like this guy that said we're all descendants of cannibalistic apes that ate the brains of other apes and went crazy and lost their tails. That explained what we were looking at in the world better than Darwinism or Creationism."
  • Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! was Devo's first album. It was produced by Brian Eno, who was in the band Roxy Music and also produced Talking Heads. He was an innovator of electronic, synthesizer-based music.
  • Jerry Casale: "We were kind of poetically explaining what it meant to be Devo, and what de-evolution was. We didn't see any evidence that man was the result of some never ending linear progress and everything was getting better. When we were growing up, the magazines would show the world in 1999, and it'd be this beautiful, futuristic, domed city with everybody going around in jets and space-cars. Everybody was fed and everybody was groomed and everybody seemed to have tons of money. It's such a joke, what really happened was: the planet got more and more overrun by population, greater gaps between the rich and the poor, more new diseases, decimation of the environment. It seemed like even though people were getting more 'free' information from television and newspapers, they were actually less informed, less thoughtful, and acting dumber. So we saw de-evolution. The fact that a bad actor could be elected president was more proof to us. Things have just gone downhill from there. We didn't really want it to all be true, instead it looks like de-evolution was clearly real. In retrospect, compared to what's going on today, Reagan looks like a serious guy."
  • With the exception of "Whip It," Devo didn't have any big hits, but their music was very influential and continues to be in demand for movies and commercials. Mothersbaugh runs a production company called Mutato Muzika, and has worked on the music for many movies, including Happy Gilmore, Rugrats, and Rushmore. Casale directed all of Devo's videos, and continues to work on music videos and commercials. He has directed music videos by The Cars, The Foo Fighters, Soundgarden and Rush.

    In The End Lyrics

In The End, as we fade into the night (Whoa!)
Who will tell the story of your life?
In the end, as my soul's laid to rest
What is left of my body?
Or am I just a shell?
    I have fought
And with flesh and blood, I commanded an army
    Through it all
I have given my heart for a moment of glory

In the end, as you fade into the night (Whoa!)
Who will tell the story of your life? (Whoa!)
And who will remember your last goodbye? (Whoa!)
'Cause it's the end and I'm not afraid
    I'm not afraid to die

    I'm not afraid!
    I'm not afraid to die!

    Born a saint
Though, with every sin I still wanna be holy
    I will live, again
Who we are isn't how we live
We are more than our bodies
If I fall, I will rise back up and relive my glory

In the end, as we fade into the night (Whoa!)
Who will tell the story of your life? (Whoa!)
And who will remember your last goodbye? (Whoa!)
'Cause it's the end and I'm not afraid
    I'm not afraid to die

In the end, as you fade into the night (Whoa!)
Who will tell the story of your life? (Whoa!)
And who will remember your last goodbye? (Whoa!)
'Cause it's the end, and I'm not afraid
    I'm not afraid to die

Who will remember this last goodbye? (Whoa!)
'Cause it's the end, and I'm not afraid
    I'm not afraid to die

    I'm not afraid!
    I'm not afraid to die!
    Not afraid!

    In The End
  • This song was written after the death of Andy Biersak's grandfather. He explained to Kerrang! magazine: "I was very close to him. Every day after school, I would go to his house and talk. (During the funeral) people were talking about my grandfather go into Heaven, and how wonderful person he was. I started to think about what heaven is."

Despite coming from a religious family, Biersak is an atheist. He told Kerrang!: "I hope I'm wrong, and I hope he is in the clouds, but on a personal level, I was thinking of the importance this person had to all these people at the church. If nothing else, Heaven is a legacy that you leave with the people around you. If there was a place that is Heaven, that's wonderful. But people telling the story of your life after you've lived it, those are the people who create that afterlife you have and continue this legacy."

"This song is about, when you die, who is left to remember the moments you had, and what have you done that would make you someone of substance? Have you done what you wanted to do with your life?"
  • This was one of the two theme songs for WWE's 2012 Hell In a Cell Pay-Per-View event.
  • The song was included as a bonus track on the compilation album Now That's What I Call Music! 45.
  • This won Best New Song at Revolver magazine's 2013 Golden Gods Awards.
  • The music video features Black Veil Brides playing in different places that were used in their movie, Legion of the Black. (The film tells the visual story of the concept presented in the Wretched And Divine: The Story Of The Wild Ones album). Andy Biersack recalled to Kerrang!: "In The End was meant to be a trailer for the Legion of Black movie, in a way. It was done in a really interesting 'Greatest Hits' of the movie way. So, all my favorite locations and parts went into it, like the CC (Christian Coma, drums) smash, the battle, and the more fun moments in the movie."

    Illumination Theory Lyrics

    [Instrumental]

    [II. Live, Die, Kill]

    Consider this question
    Look deep inside
    Deliver a true confession
What are you willing to live for?

    Consider this question
    Open your eyes
    Examine your own reflection
What are you willing to die for?

When your backs’ against the wall
    And the times uncertain
    Consider this question
    No standing by
When flesh and blood are threatened
What are you willing to kill for?

    We seek to understand
We cry with hand in hand

The bridges we build to connect
The distance that makes us forget
Hate dividing us, love reminding us
    Of our shared humanity

Hope can be a shadow fleeting
    I would rather die believing
Capture it all in a final act of faith

    We seek to understand
We cry with hand in hand

A story that needs to be told
An answer that begs to found
The beauty we wish to behold
    Is never too far away

    [III. The Embracing Circle]

    [Instrumental]

    [IV. The Pursuit Of Truth]

    Mothers for their children
    Husbands for their wives
    Martyrs for the kingdom
    Fighting for your life
    A soldier for his country
    A junkie for the high
    Teachers for their students
    Vengeance for a crime
    Rebels for their freedom
    A tyrant for the prize
    Cowards for salvation
    Money, love, and faith

    Noble embrace
Lay down our lives for the cause
    Death over shame
    Grace before glory

    [V. Surrender, Trust & Passion]

To really feel the joy in life
You must suffer through the pain
When you surrender to the light
You can face the darkest days

If you open up your eyes
And you put your trust in love
On those cold and endless nights
    You will never be alone

    Passion glows within your heart
    Like a furnace burning bright
Until you struggle through the dark
You’ll never know that you're alive

  • Guitarist John Petrucci told Ultimate-Guitar.com how he wrote such a multi-part song with multiple movements. "The first thing you start with is that you know you're gonna do that kind of piece," he said. "You go in knowing, 'OK, this is gonna be an epic piece. It's gonna be 20 minutes long.' You know you have room for parts to develop and grow. Once you do that you can get a good idea of the type of shape of it that you want."

He added: "For example in this case, I knew I wanted us to do an atmospheric breakdown in the center with almost like a ballet-sounding string thing just to be totally, totally different in the middle. If you kinda know that thing you have a little bit of a blueprint."
  • Petrucci told Ultimate Guitar that he already had the main theme for "Illumination Theory" before he started working on it in earnest. "It was, 'OK, this is going to be the theme. This is happening at the start,'" he said. "Similarly with the ending progression that's repeating, that's something we had worked on at a soundcheck in Asia at one point. As soon as we did that, I'm like, 'This will be used for the ending of a song somewhere on our next album.' So you have an idea and you have these little pins like on a map. It's a matter of shaping what happens in-between those moments."
  • The song's vibey outro was something that keyboardist Jordan Rudess created at home. He told MusicRadar.com : "I was playing it, these three chords, and I loved it. I didn't know what the guys would think, but I played it for them, and John Petrucci was like, 'That's really cool.' So we decided that it would be a neat surprise at the end. It's piano, guitar and Seaboard. It relaxes things after this enormous trip you've been on. So if you're still listening, if you hang in there, that's how we tag it out."
  • Rudess told Loud Online about this song's classical music influence. "Well," he said, "I come from a Julliard classical music background, I like pieces where motifs and ideas get developed and changed and can be allowed to breathe and that track's certainly not any sort of standard pop song format in any way, shape or form. I just love the fact that we're just really going for it and there's all these kind of progressive parts where there's interesting counterpoints and harmonic changes going on, and I'm also very fond of the fact that in the middle section of 'Illumination Theory,' there's that whole section that really is very ambient and very electronic-soundscapey which leads into a string ensemble part which was actually done with the help my young protégé Eren BaŠŸbuÄŸ, a young Turkish arranger/conductor who took what I had composed on my keyboard and fleshed it out for a string orchestra. And then the string orchestra came into the studio and he came in and conducted them."

"That piece just has so much to it," he continued. "I love when we get deep and it all gets a bit wild, and I also love that in the midst of all that madness, we really let that middle section to really breathe and slow down and be melodic like a movie score."

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wonder out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I Wait and Bleed

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wonder out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

    Goodbye!

I wipe it off on tile, the light is brighter this time
    Everything is 3D blasphemy
My eyes are red and gold, the hair is standing straight up
This is not the way I pictured me
    I can't control my shakes
How the hell did I get here?
Something about this, so very wrong
I have to laugh out loud, I wish I didn't like this
Is it a dream or a memory?

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wonder over where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

Get outta my head 'cause I don't need this
    Why I didn't I see this?
    I'm a victim, Manchurian candidate
    I have sinned by just
Makin' my mind up and takin' your breath away

I've felt the hate rise up in me
Kneel down and clear the stone of leaves
I wander over where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

I've felt the hate rise up in me

I wonder out where you can't see
Inside my shell, I wait and bleed

    Goodbye!

    You haven't learned a thing
    I haven't changed a thing
My flesh was in my bones
    The pain was always free

    You haven't learned a thing

    Wait and Bleed
  • This is about a man who keeps having repetitive black and white dreams about laying in a bathtub full of his own blood with his wrists slit. One day he wakes up and sees that his dream has become a reality, but he doesn't want to believe it and he tries to fall back asleep again.
  • On the Digipack of their self-titled release, there is a remix of the song mixed by Terry Date. This is the version usually played by radio stations. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ, for above 2)
  • Slipknot drummer Chris Fehn (#3) told us about this track: "It was just a basic song. We didn't know it was going to be that popular. The funny thing is the record label, especially new guys at the record label, were coming around when we started getting big, and they're like, 'Oh, the next record you can write like three Wait And Bleeds.' And we're just like, You are an idiot. Therefore, we don't do that. But obviously the band, believe it or not, we have so much control over what we do that we don't write anything for money, we don't write anything for popularity, we have to like it first. And it's just a song that we liked, and it just so happened that it got on the radio and got the attention that we didn't expect." (Check out our interview with Chris Fehn.)
  • In the lyrics when Corey says, "I am a victim, a Manchurian Candidate!," he is referring to a movie from 1962 about communist mind control. (thanks, Stu - Dayton, OH)

The Family And The Fishing Net Lyrics

Suffocated by mirrors, stained by dreams
Her honey belly pulls the seams
Curves are still upon the hinge
Pale zeros tinge the tiger skin

Moist as grass, ripe and heavy as the night
The sponge is full, well out of sight
    All around the conversations
Icing on the warm flesh cake

Light creeps through her secret tunnels
    Sucked into the open spaces
    Burning out in sudden flashes
    Draining blood from well-fed faces

    Desires form in subtle whispers
    Flex the muscles in denial
Up and down its pristine cage
So the music, so the trial

    Vows of sacrifice, headless chickens
Dance in circles, they the blessed
Man and wife, undressed by all
Their grafted trunks in heat possessed

Even as the soft skins tingle
They mingle with the homeless mother
Who loves the day but lives another
    That once was hers

The worried father, long lost lover
    Brushes ashes with his broom
Rehearses jokes to fly and hover
Bursting over the bride and groom

    And the talk goes on

    Memories crash on tireless waves
The lifeguards whom the winter saves

    Silence falls the guillotine
    All the doors are shut
Nervous hands grip tight the knife
In the darkness, till the cake is cut

    Passed around, in little pieces
    The body and the flesh
    The family and the fishing-net
    And another in the mesh

    The body and the flesh

  • This is about the absurdities of traditional weddings. The territorial battles, rings, and vows seem ridiculous from an outsiders point of view.
  • The lyrics were inspired by the early poetry of Dylan Thomas.
  • Gabriel's marriage to his first wife Jill hit a crisis when she had an affair with David Lord, the co producer of Security, and in this song he foreshadowed the marital tension. He told Mojo April 2010: "We think we're islands, but we're all connected in a landmass. What you see above the water is two people getting married. But beneath the water are the tentacles of two larger, dominant organisms which are the families making connection through those two particular tentacles. But we never observe and recognise that."

Hey, I don't feel so good.
    Something's not right,
    Something's coming over me
    What the fuck is this?

    Killer, intruder, homicidal man
If you see me coming run as fast as you can.
A bloodthirsty demon who's stalking the street
I hack up my victims like pieces of meat.
    Blood thirsty demon, sinister fiend,
    Bludgeonous slaughters, my evil deeds.
My hammer's a cold piece of blood lethal steel,
I grin while you writhe with the pain that I deal.
Swinging the hammer, I hack through their heads,
Defiant defiler, you're next to be dead.
I unleash my hammer with sadistic intent.
Pounding, surrounding, slamming through your head, yeah!
Their bodies convulse in agony and pain.
I mangle their faces 'til no features remain.
A blade for the butchering, I cut them to shreds.
First take out the organs then cut off the head.
The remains of their flesh now sop under my feet.
One more bloody massacre, the murder's complete.
I seek to dismember, a sadist fiend.
And bloodbaths are my way of getting clean.
I lurk in the alleys, wait for the kill
I have no remorse for the blood that I spill.
A merciless butcher who lives underground.
I'm out to destroy and I will cut you down.
I see you and I'm waiting for Black Friday
    Killer, intruder, homicidal man
If you see me coming run as fast as you can.
A bloodthirsty demon who's stalking the street.
I hack up my victims like pieces of meat.

    Good Mourning/Black Friday
  • This song uses a lot of mendacious imagery and showcases some of Megadeth's darkest lyrics. It is about a man who is possessed by a demon and goes on a gruesome killing spree, which becomes known as "Black Friday."
  • In the closing lyrics, "It's Black Friday, paint the devil on the wall," "Paint the devil on the wall" could be referring to the reason for possession or a means of exempting oneself from Black Friday.
  • Dijon Carruthers is mentioned in the liner notes to the album as inspiring this song and "Bad Omen." Carruthers was the band's drummer for a short time, and according to Dave Mustaine, he had a friend who was into the occult and would write down strange symbols, making the band wonder if he was a Satanist. This friend served as inspiration for this song.

    Send a heartbeat to
The void that cries through you
Relive the pictures that have come to pass
    For now we stand alone
The world is lost and blown
And we are flesh and blood disintegrate
    With no more to hate

Is it bright where you are
    Have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
    And in your darkest hour
    I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain

    Delivered from the blast
The last of a line of lasts
The pale princess of a palace cracked
    And now the kingdom comes
    Crashing down undone
And I am a master of a nothing place
    Of recoil and grace

Is it bright where you are
    Have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
    And in your darkest hour

We can watch the world devoured in it's pain

    Time has stopped before us
    The sky cannot ignore us
    No one can separate us
For we are all that is left
    The echo bounces off me
    The shadow lost beside me
There's no more need to pretend
Cause now I can begin again

Is it bright where you are
    Have the people changed
Does it make you happy you're so strange
    And in your darkest hour
    I hold secrets flame
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain
    Strange
    Strange
    Strange

The End Is The Beginning Is The End
  • This was recorded for the Batman And Robin soundtrack and released as a single in 1997. On the single, a different take called "The Beginning Is The End Is The Beginning" was put on (as well as on the soundtrack), along with two instrumentals with names referring to the original song.
  • This won the Grammy award for Best Hard Rock Performance in 1998. The previous year, they won the same award for "Bullet With Butterfly Wings."
  • The drummer seen in the video was borrowed from the group Filter after Jimmy Chamberlain was kicked out of the group after being arrested for drug possession charges. (thanks, James - Dartmouth, Canada)
  • The second version of this song is on featured on The Watchman trailer, which helped the song gain some popularity. (thanks, Jacob - Rocky Mount, NC)

    Unskinny Bop Lyrics

    What's got you so jumpy?
Why can't you sit still, yeah?
Like gasoline you want to pump me
And leave me when you get your fill, yeah
Every time I touch you honey you get hot
I want to make love you never stop
Come up for air you push me to the floor
What's been going on in that head of yours

    Unskinny Bop
    Just blows me away
    Unskinny bop, bop
    All night and day
    Unskinny bop, bop, bop, bop
    She just loves to play
Unskinny bop nothin' more to say

You look at me so funny
Love bite got you acting oh so strange
You got too many bees in your honey
Am I just another word in your page, yeah, yeah
Every time I touch you you get hot
I want to make love you never stop
Come up for air you push me to the floor
What's been going on in that head of yours

    Unskinny bop
    Just blows me away
    Unskinny bop, bop
    All night and day
    Unskinny bop, bop, bop, bop
    She just loves to play
Unskinny bop nothin' more to say

You're sayin' my love won't do ya
That ain't love written on your face
Well honey I can see right through ya
Yeah whose ridin' who at the end of the race

    What's right
    What's wrong
    What's left
What the hell is going on

    Unskinny bop
    Just blows me away
    Unskinny bop, bop
    All night and day
    Unskinny bop, bop, bop, bop
    She just loves to play
(Up for air, pulled to the floor)

    Unskinny bop
    No good, no good
    Unskinny bop, bop
All night n' day, do it
    Unskinny bop, bop, bop, bop

    Unskinny Bop
  • According to Poison guitarist C.C. DeVille, the phrase "Unskinny Bop" has no particular meaning. DeVille wrote the music and used the phrase as a placeholder for the lyrics, which lead singer Bret Michaels would write. When their producer Bruce Fairbairn heard the phrase, he thought it was perfect for the song, even though he had no idea what it meant.
  • Poison formed in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1984 as Paris. They moved to Los Angeles in an ambulance Michaels bought for $700 and begin playing in clubs there. When their guitarist quit, they chose DeVille over Slash and Steve Silva, who also applied. Slash eventually joined Guns N' Roses and Silva was in the The Joe Perry Project. Poison got a record deal in 1986, disbanded in 1994 and re-formed in 1999.
  • On the 2002 Poison album Hollyweird, there's a song called "Home (Bret's Story)," where Michaels sings: "I eat dinner with Nick Cage and Charlie Sheen, Nick asks me what the hell 'Unskinny Bop' means, it's slang for CC banging a porno queen."

    One Vision Lyrics

God works in mysterious ways, mysterious ways
Hey, one man one goal ha, one mission
One heart one soul just one solution
One flash of light yeah, one God, One Vision

    One flesh one bone
    One true religion
    One voice one hope
    One real decision
    Wowowowowowo gimme one vision
    Hey

    No wrong no right
I'm gonna tell you there's no black and no white
    No blood no stain
All we need is one world wide vision

    One flesh, One bone
    One true religion
    One race, One hope
    One real decision
Wowowowowo woh yeah oh yeah oh yeah

    I had a dream
    When I was young
    A dream of sweet illusion
A glimpse of hope and unity
And visions of one sweet union
    But a cold wind blows
    And a dark rain falls
And in my heart it shows
Look what they've done to my dream, yeah

    One vision
    So give me your hands
    Give me your hearts
    I'm ready
    There's only one direction
    One world one nation
    Yeah one vision

    No hate, No fight
    Just excitation
    All through the night
    It's a celebration
    Wowowowowowo yeah
One one one one one one one
One vision hey one vision one vision one vision one vision

    One flesh, One bone
    One true religion
    One voice, One hope
    One real decision

    Gimme one light, yeah
    Gimme one hope, hey

    One Vision Song Chart
  • Queen was inspired to write this by their Live Aid appearance in 1985 - millions of people sharing one vision of a better world.

When the band was approached to perform at Live Aid, they were in a rut and reticent to appear. But after their show-stopping performance, they re-entered the studio with renewed energy. They were back in Munich (a place they had previously hit trouble during the Hot Space sessions), but this time spent a lot of time working in the studio, not being distracted by drugs or other distractions - unlike the earlier sessions.
  • All four band members helped write this. Most Queen songs were written separately, mostly out of a desire to keep writing credits to themselves - Brian May has often hinted in interviews that he was quite possessive of his own songs. But this also made sure their songs didn't all sound alike.

The idea of writing a song together came from Freddie Mercury. He rang the other three members and asked them to come to the studio, where the writing and recording sessions were taped.
  • The band decided that the song would be credited to all four of them, but it was basically composed by Brian May (chords) and Roger Taylor (lyrics). Freddie Mercury was in charge of production and arrangements, and he polished what the others composed.

This was one of the first times that the band distributed a joint songwriting credit; for their entire career songs had been credited to the original band member who wrote them, even if other band members contributed. For One Vision, the band decided on a joint credit, which would become the norm from next album The Miracle onwards.
  • The synth part in the intro was played by guitarist Brian May. The weird voice at the start actually says "God moves in mysterious ways," although is often misheard as "on the city streets today." (thanks, Sebas - Tokyo, Japan, for above 3)
  • The video was the first that Austrian duo The Torpedo Twins directed for Queen. They have worked on many Queen videos since.
  • In sports videos, this is often used as background music.
  • This was released as a single before the album was finished.
  • This was used in the 1986 movie Iron Eagle, starring Louis Gossett, Jr. It was like Top Gun, but not nearly as good.
  • The final line is an in-joke from Freddie Mercury, where he shouts "Fried chicken!" instead of "one vision." It's likely that this was merely a humorous aside rather than a caustic social commentary.
  • A documentary was made around the recording of this track, showing the band members working on the song in the studio with producer Mack (who had been working with the band since 1980). It shows the lyrics coming together (Taylor and Mercury discussing various ideas which "won't fit" before coming on "one true religion"), and a hilarious guide vocal take where Mercury sings the alternate lyrics "one dump, one turd, two tits, John Deacon!" in the chorus.

The band were reportedly unhappy with having a documentary crew around, feeling that it forced them to act up to the camera and didn't act naturally as themselves in the studio. Nevertheless, it has been included on many video compilations and the re-release of the A Kind of Magic album.
  • "One Vision" became the band's de facto opening song for the 1986 Magic tour, agreed by many to be the band's finest ever live shows.

    Supper's Ready Lyrics

Walking across the sitting-room, I turn the television off.
Sitting beside you, I look into your eyes.
As the sound of motor cars fades in the night time,
I swear I saw your face change, it didn't seem quite right.
...And it's hello babe with your guardian eyes so blue
Hey my baby don't you know our love is true.

Coming closer with our eyes, a distance falls around our bodies.
Out in the garden, the moon seems very bright,
Six saintly shrouded men move across the lawn slowly.
The seventh walks in front with a cross held high in hand.
...And it's hey babe your supper's waiting for you.
Hey my baby, don't you know our love is true.

I've been so far from here,
    Far from your warm arms.
It's good to feel you again,
It's been a long long time. Hasn't it?

I know a farmer who looks after the farm.
With water clear, he cares for all his harvest.
I know a fireman who looks after the fire.

You, can't you see he's fooled you all.
Yes, he's here again, can't you see he's fooled you all.
    Share his peace,
    Sign the lease.
    He's a supersonic scientist,
He's the guaranteed eternal sanctuary man.
Look, look into my mouth he cries,
And all the children lost down many paths,
I bet my life you'll walk inside
    Hand in hand,
    gland in gland
    With a spoonful of miracle,
He's the guaranteed eternal sanctuary man.
We will rock you, rock you little snake,
We will keep you snug and warm.

Wearing feelings on our faces while our faces took a rest,
We walked across the fields to see the children of the West,
But we saw a host of dark skinned warriors
    standing still below the ground,
    Waiting for battle.

The fight's begun, they've been released.
Killing foe for peace...bang, bang, bang. Bang, bang, bang...
And they're giving me a wonderful potion,
'cause I cannot contain my emotion.
And even though I'm feeling good,
Something tells me I'd better activate my prayer capsule.

Today's a day to celebrate, the foe have met their fate.
The order for rejoicing and dancing has come from our warlord.

Wandering through the chaos the battle has left,
We climb up a mountain of human flesh,
To a plateau of green grass, and green trees full of life.
A young figure sits still by a pool,
He's been stamped "Human Bacon" by some butchery tool.
    (He is you)
Social Security took care of this lad.
We watch in reverence, as Narcissus is turned to a flower.

    A flower?

If you go down to Willow Farm,
to look for butterflies, flutterbyes, gutterflies
Open your eyes, it's full of surprise, everyone lies,
like the focks on the rocks,
    and the musical box.
Oh, there's Mum & Dad, and good and bad,
and everyone's happy to be here.

There's Winston Churchill dressed in drag,
he used to be a British flag, plastic bag, what a drag.
The frog was a prince, the prince was a brick, the brick was an egg,
    the egg was a bird.
(Fly away you sweet little thing, they're hard on your tail)
    Hadn't you heard?
(They're going to change you into a human being!)
Yes, we're happy as fish and gorgeous as geese,
and wonderfully clean in the morning.

We've got everything, we're growing everything,
    We've got some in
    We've got some out
We've got some wild things floating about
    Everyone, we're changing everyone,
    you name them all,
    We've had them here,
And the real stars are still to appear.

    ALL CHANGE!

    Feel your body melt;
Mum to mud to mad to dad
Dad diddley office, Dad diddley office,
    You're all full of ball.

Dad to dam to dumb to mum
Mum diddley washing, Mum diddley washing,
    You're all full of ball.

Let me hear you lies, we're living this up to the eyes.
    Ooee-ooee-ooee-oowaa
    Momma I want you now.

And as you listen to my voice
To look for hidden doors, tidy floors, more applause.
You've been here all the time,
Like it or not, like what you got,
You're under the soil (the soil, the soil),
Yes, deep in the soil (the soil, the soil, the soil!).
So we'll end with a whistle and end with a bang
and all of us fit in our places.

With the guards of Magog, swarming around,
The Pied Piper takes his children underground.
Dragons coming out of the sea,
Shimmering silver head of wisdom looking at me.
He brings down the fire from the skies,
You can tell he's doing well by the look in human eyes.
    Better not compromise.
    It won't be easy.

    666 is no longer alone,
He's getting out the marrow in your back bone,
And the seven trumpets blowing sweet rock and roll,
Gonna blow right down inside your soul.
Pythagoras with the looking glass reflects the full moon,
In blood, he's writing the lyrics of a brand new tune.

And it's hey babe, with your guardian eyes so blue,
Hey my baby, don't you know our love is true,
I've been so far from here,
    Far from your loving arms,
Now I'm back again, and babe it's gonna work out fine.

Can't you feel our souls ignite
    Shedding ever changing colours,
in the darkness of the fading night,
Like the river joins the ocean,
as the germ in a seed grows
We have finally been freed to get back home.

There's an angel standing in the sun,
and he's crying with a loud voice,
"This is the supper of the mighty one",
    Lord of Lords,
    King of Kings,
Has returned to lead his children home,
To take them to the new Jerusalem.

  • This concept piece is 23 minutes long and divided into seven sections. It tells the story of two lovers who travel to strange worlds, eventually returning to their world only to witness The Apocalypse.
  • At Genesis concerts, pamphlets were distributed with notes detailing what was going on in each section. This helped the crowd follow along.
  • Peter Gabriel was the band's lead singer at the time, and the lyrics he wrote for this song were inspired by a night he spent with his first wife, Jill, at her parents' house. Gabriel believes Jill became possessed by a spirit, which gave him the starting point for a song about the battle between good and evil.
  • Gabriel: "One of the first times that I felt as if I was really singing from my soul, almost like singing for my life."
  • Section 6 is titled "Apocalypse." Gabriel got the idea for it while reading the book of Revelations in The Bible. This section features a solo over an unusual 9/8 rhythm.
  • This was the first big production number Genesis came up with. Led by Gabriel, they started putting on extravagant stage performances to please the fans and generate publicity. In 1974, they took it to a new level by performing their entire double album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway on tour. In that show, Gabriel changed costumes a number of times.
  • A few years after Gabriel left, Genesis moved from anthems like this to short pop songs. Led by Phil Collins, they lost some fans but had a string of hits.
  • When Gabriel left the band in 1975, they continued to perform this in concert, with Phil Collins on vocals. It is included on their 1977 live album Seconds Out. Gabriel told Mojo magazine that it was a "weird thing" seeing Collins sing a song with personal elements in it. He added: "It was like watching someone in your old clothes and you're not sure how well they fit."
