A Better Tomorrow Lyrics

Yo, this goes for all my brothers and sisters locked down
For all my peoples incarcerated, for those who ain't make it

Yo, in the housing, thousands seen early graves
Victims of worldly ways, memories stays engraved
All my live brothers, is locked down with high numbers
The young hunger, blind to these lies, they die younger
In this New World the Order slaughter men, women, and children
Ten feet gates surround the building keep us sealed in
The projects, lifeless like a Vietnam vet
Constant war, sever threats of enemy conquest
Crooked cops comb my building complex that's in the rumble
Streets are like a jungle, can't let my cipher crumble
Vivid thoughts, Devils resort to trick knowledge
They kick garbage, lust for chicks and quick dollars
I know the pain the game bring, I did the same thing
Spaced out in the staircase, performing a sting
It's hard to keep control, I bless those who seek a scroll
Trying to reach a whole nation and break the sleeper hold
Not a role model, I walk a hard role to follow
I sold bottles of sorrow then chose poems and novels
The gospel was told, some souls it swallowed whole
Mentally they fold, and they eventually sold
Their life and times, deadly like the virus design
But too, minute to dilute, the science is mine

You can't party your life away
Drink your life away
Smoke your life away
Fuck your life away
Dream your life away
Scheme your life away
Cause your seeds grow up the same way

A voice cries from the wilderness of the North
A representation of the families that lost one
All victims of incarceration
Or other divisions of the family structure
Youths are injected with serums that leads
To skin irritations, babies being born with
Disfigurations, experimentations
On their faces there bear world relations
Of mothers that carry the pain
Of blood stained streets where sisters mourn and wail
Big brothers been slain from hails of gun fire
It lightly begins to rain screams of terror
Are hidden by the passing trains
This can't be little Shane, his uncle cried
As he drops to his nephew's side, holding his cane
Just give me a name, of who has inflicted this
Bitter sickness, and left us to witness

Yeah, yo
Curses from war, innocent blood spills for days
Soothe in godly ways, hands, solemn in praise
Tree of life, more precious than Wu is golden game
The wise self flourish inherit, Halls of Fame
Crime visions in my blood got me, locked in prison
While we die hard living people whine about religion, vision
Blow, spin, and sin and killing what's revealing
It's a never ending battle with no ending or beginning, listen
Zero process, progress, become the hunted
America's most wanted, good life flaunted, want it
Some love the speed, some satisfy a need
Some want to be down, young gun seed, jungle breed
The stronger speed, someone die, someone bleed
One flew astray, and then caught my little seed
Can it be, the ice have us trifle life, made me grab the knife
The righteous man would be within these stripes pipes
Take in my energy, breath and know the rest
Cause the good die young and the hard die best

You can't party your life away
Drink your life away
Smoke your life away
Fuck your life away
Dream your life away
Scheme your life away
Cause your seeds grow up the same way
Cause your seeds grow up the same way
Cause your seeds grow up the same way

Y'all bitches love dances, and pulling down your pants
While your man's on tour, your spending up his advances
Your friends ain't shit, all they do is drink, smoke, and suck dick
The whole projects is trapped in stench
You either high school drop-outs, one to three cop-outs
Fifteen years old, shorty ass and top out
Ninety-nine cent beer drinking pussy stinking
Fucking so much your ass and titties start shrinking
New World Order slave trade, minimum wage, better cage
Can a devil fool a Muslim nowadays
Inside my lab, I'm going mad
Took two drags off the blunts, and started breaking down the flag
The blue is for the Crips, the red is for the Bloods
The whites for the cops, and the stars come from the clubs
Or the slugs that ignites, through the night, by the dawn
Early light, why is sons fighting for the stripe

As we dwell through this concrete hell, calling it home
Mama say, take your time young man and build your own
Don't wind up like your old dad
Still searching for them glory days he never had
So many bad want to scheme for American dream, no more kings
The cash rule everything now, we going down
These babies looking up to us, it's up to us
The Million Man March MC's, get on the bus
But envy, greed, lust, and hate, separate
Though the devil mind state blood kin cannot relate
No longer, brothers, we unstable
Like Kane when he slew Abel, killing each other

You can't party your life away
Drink your life away
Smoke your life away
Fuck your life away
Dream your life away
Scheme your life away
Cause your seeds grow up the same way
Cause your seeds grow up the same way
Cause your seeds grow up the same way

A Better Tomorrow Song Chart
  • The title track of Wu-Tang Clan's sixth album shares its name with a song they featured on their 1997 sophomore LP, Wu-Tang Forever. The reference in both instances is to John Woo's 1986 crime film, A Better Tomorrow.
  • RZA explained the album title to Billboard magazine : "John Woo has always been an inspiration to me," he said. "But it wasn't just in reference to that film, because that film is actually a very violent film, very specific about the police corruption and things of that nature. My concept of a better tomorrow, moreso, is what the sentence says itself. We need a better tomorrow."

"I'm a vegetarian. Why? Because no animal needs to die for me to live," RZA added. "I'm into renewable energy, I'm into getting rid of the plastic bottles and coming with another form of drinking our water. I'm into the people respecting each other. We don't got to like each other but respect each other for everything you are, whether you're black, brown, white or red, homosexual, woman, whatever it is. We gotta have respect for each other first."
  • This samples Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' 1975 single, "Wake Up Everybody."
  • The song's music video compiles protest footage from Ferguson, Missouri and New York City as well as soundbites from President Obama speaking on race relations in America. "This visual was created by Wu-Tang Clan in the hopes of inspiring change and promoting unity throughout the world, The Wu-Tang Clan said in a press release. They added a quote from Martin Luther King, Jr: "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere."
  • Asked by NME what his biggest regret about the A Better Tomorrow album was, RZA replied: "I tried to get James Blake to do a hook on 'A Better Tomorrow' but we couldn't make it happen in time."

The pair did previously work together on Blake's Overgrown track "Take A Fall For Me."

    Stagger Lee Lyrics

It was back in '32 when times were hard
He had a Colt forty-five and a deck of cards
    Stagger Lee

He wore rat-drawn shoes and an old stetson hat
Had a '28 Ford, had payments on that
    Stagger Lee

His woman threw him out in the ice and snow
And told him, "Never ever come back no more."
    Stagger Lee

So he walked through the rain, and he walked through the mud
Till he came to a place called The Bucket Of Blood
    Stagger Lee

He said "Mr. Motherfucker, you know who I am?"
The barkeeper said, "No, and I don't give a good goddamn."
    To Stagger Lee

He said, "Well, bartender, it's plain to see
I'm that bad motherfucker called Stagger Lee."
    Mr. Stagger Lee

Barkeep said, "Yeah, I've heard your name down the way
And I kick motherfucking asses like you every day."
    Mr Stagger Lee

Well, those were the last words that the barkeep said
'Cause Stag put four holes in his motherfucking head

Just then in came a broad called Nellie Brown
Was known to make more money than any bitch in town

She struts across the bar, hitching up her skirt
Over to Stagger Lee, she starts to flirt
    With Stagger Lee

She saw the barkeep, said, "O God, he can't be dead!"
Stag said, "Well, just count the holes in the motherfucker's head."

She said, "You ain't look like you scored in quite a time.
Why not come to my pad? It won't cost you a dime."
    Mr. Stagger Lee

"But there's something I have to say before you begin
You'll have to be gone before my man Billy Dilly comes in,
    Mr. Stagger Lee."

"I'll stay here till Billy comes in, till time comes to pass
And furthermore I'll fuck Billy in his motherfucking ass."
    Said Stagger Lee

    "I'm a bad motherfucker, don't you know?
And I'll crawl over fifty good pussies just to get one fat boy's asshole,"
    Said Stagger Lee

Just then Billy Dilly rolls in and he says, "You must be
That bad motherfucker called Stagger Lee."
    Stagger Lee

"Yeah, I'm Stagger Lee, and you better get down on your knees
And suck my dick because if you don't, you're gonna be dead,"
    Said Stagger Lee

Billy dropped down and slobbered on his head
And Stag filled him full of lead
    Oh yeah

  • On the night of December 25, 1895, "Stag" Lee Shelton shot dead his underworld rival William "Billy" Lyons in a St. Louis saloon following a dispute. The crime soon became the subject of songs as well as folktales and poems. The best known version of "Stagger Lee," by Lloyd Price, reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1959 - Dick Clark insisted the violent content of the song be toned down when Price appeared on American Bandstand Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' sweary interpretation tells the story from a neutral perspective and is set in the 1930s.
  • The recording of the song for the Murder Ballads album was a happy accident. "It was a real last-minute miracle," drummer Jim Sclavunos told NME. "I came into the studio towards the very end of the sessions, and I showed Nick a book called The Life, which was a collection of black hustler prison poetry. I pointed out an old really nasty version of 'Stagger Lee', and he got quite excited. Just a few minutes later, we piled into the live room, and recorded the song, fully realized, totally off-the-cuff, in one take."

Hard Way To Make An Easy Living Lyrics

Some people say he’s a wealthy man
But he built his house with his own two hands
On a piece of land that’s as far as you can see

They call him lucky, but they don’t know
He’s up and running when the rooster crows
And he’s still in the fields with his supper cold
    But if you ask me,

It’s a hard hard way to make your way
In a world that don’t care what you pay,
What you earn or what you take,
Or how much you’re not giving
Life’s a tough old row to hoe,
Trust in God with the seeds you sow,
And always know it’s a hard hard way of making easy living

His flatbed it was shiny and new back in 1992
It’s been a few since he had ‘im a year like that
He ain’t got time to complain,
Hay on the ground and it looks like rain and,
Pray it ain’t like the twister that came back in ’88 and laid everything flat

It’s a hard hard way to make your way
In a world that don’t care what you pay,
What you earn or what you take,
Or how much you’re not giving
Life’s a tough old row to hoe,
Trust in God with the seeds you sow,
And always know it’s a hard hard way of making easy living

They take for granted for what he’s planted in that stubborn ground,
But the cattle and the cotton know that they don’t know in town

It’s a hard hard way to make your way
In a world that don’t care what you pay,
What you earn or what you take,
Or how much you’re not giving
Life’s a tough old row to hoe,
Trust in God with the seeds you sow,
And always know it’s a hard hard way of making easy living

    Makin’ easy living,
    Making easy living.

Hard Way To Make An Easy Living
  • Keith penned this tribute to farmers with his long term collaborator Bobby Pinson. He recalled: "We wrote that up in a cabin starting with some minor chords. It was one of those deals where we could just go down the neck of the guitar trying to find what chord goes next. You wind up back at one again and go, how'd we get back here? Then you start trying to write to it."

"I've got a friend who has about 10,000 acres and everybody thinks he's really well off," Keith continued. "I told Bobby that people think because this guy does a million dollars' worth of ranching business and a million dollars' worth of cattle business every year that he's sitting good. But it's a hard way to make an easy living. He's got lots of bills, lots of equipment, lots of labor, and puts in lots of time. When you think about running cattle and farming 10,000 acres - you may take in million, but probably 80% of that goes right back in. And then you still have to live, do upkeep for the ranch - you're always fencing, fetching cows, trucking in equipment and working. I usually write from the hub out, but this started with the story then we worked through a chorus. Tom T. Hall style - start at the front and tell the story."
  • As a successful country star, who has had to work hard for his wealth, Keith may be also delivering a message about where he came from. When asked on 101.5 the Eagle's Jon & Amanda Show whether he's become too rich to be truly country, he replied: "They just see me now. They didn't see where you came from; what your roots were like," he says. "If you've been poor before… no matter how much money you get, you're still not comfortable with it. You never forget what it felt like to be without."

    Never Let Go Lyrics

Look, homicide is illegal, death is a penalty
Never Let Go when you've got ahold of your enemy
Eagle claw cobra clutch by any means necessary
I’ll never let it go, see my shadow ninja mic flow
I throw a great entre dart arrow to your temple
    Allmighty [?] to the insidious
Plan of the Wu-Tang Clan became a world brand
We never let it go, we talk a half a mil a show

Never let go of your mind
It’s a terrible thing to waste
To lose, but it’s very hard to find
    Being that ignorance is lethal
We must touch hearts, tune souls, harmonize the people
Never let go of your plan, execute
So when you shoot, inspire everyone on the land
    Never lose knowledge of yourself
For it may become risk to your health
    And great loss of wealth

Never let go of your cream, never let go of your dream
Players retire, but they never let go of the team
If you a rider then you never let go of that thing
Pull up your mans’ like you better let go of that bling
This life’s crazy, too many life sentences, maybe
Fatherless babies on the block but they father 380
That’s just the hood lately, never let go
I’m what the hood made me
Momma told me to find a good lady

Never let go of staring at the death
Like yo, that's your best blow
I still hold on like En Vogue
The cold go to war with the heat
    Eyes wide, never falling asleep
    All the talking is cheap
    Call'em, ultimate warrior, W.W.F
I come up victorious, struggle is nothing to Deck
Set it straight for the seeds, to see a better new
Take the real life by the rings and I ain’t letting go
    I ain’t letting go

No matter what the odds be
    No matter how hard we
    You never let go

Never let go of the fight, never let go of the mic
My honesty, my values, my loyalty, my pride
And memory of those who have passed to the other side
Never letting go, I’m never letting go of my beliefs
    My faith, convictions, real
Both hands holding on, never let go the wheel
    We hood legends, misunderstood
    These lessons, learned
    Growing up for manhood
Keep focus on the prize what you better do
A little taste of heaven, sunshine is where we headed to
States what’s ahead of you, always on the schedule
Smoke the gold leaf down to the residue
Letting go, is something that I never do
Those who let go, live life regrettable
Never let go of your hope or your rope
Eyes on the prize, never let go of the scope
When I’m in jail, never let go of the soap
Hold on, boy, never let go

Never let go, the all-eye-seeing, the supreme
Never let go the love of your seeds, or your queen
Never let go your heart, or the place you started
The feeling that I had, Wu-Tang had just charted
The old earth departed, I give thanks to the martyrs
I never let go the love I have for thy father
    Never let go the glow
The more I know the more that it shows
I won’t let go, even if I decompose
Your seed will carry it on, we need to carry it on
Pass the baton, life is just the marathon
And ain't' playing to win it, it’s an epidemic
Never let go, that’s what the god recommended

No matter what the odds be
    No matter how hard we
    You never let go

    One Slip Lyrics

A restless eye across a weary room
A glazed look and I was on the road to ruin
The music played and played as we whirled without end
No hint, no word her honour to defend

I will, I will she sighed to my request
And then she tossed her mane while my resolve was put to the test
Then drowned in desire, our souls on fire
I lead the way to the funeral pyre
And without a thought of the consequence
I gave in to my decadence

One Slip, and down the hole we fall
It seems to take no time at all
    A momentary lapse of reason
That binds a life for life
A small regret, you won't forget,
There'll be no sleep in here tonight

Was it love, or was it the idea of being in love?
Or was it the hand of fate, that seemed to fit just like a glove?
The moment slipped by and soon the seeds were sown
The year grew late and neither one wanted to remain alone

One slip, and down the hole we fall
It seems to take no time at all
    A momentary lapse of reason
That binds a life for life
A small regret, you will never forget,

    One Slip
  • This is about falling in love and what is love, how one event can change your whole life. How one slip is all it takes. It is not ultimately about sex or love, but about unintended consequences. In the song, a man spots a woman across the room. Their eyes meet, and soon they are both giving in to sexual impulses. A pregnancy results, as is subtly implied with the words "soon the seeds were sewn" and "the year grew late," as well as by the sound effects at the beginning of the song which are a metaphor for sperm trying and then contacting the ovum.
  • The album title came from a line in this song: "A momentary lapse of reason." The "momentary lapse of reason" is a reckless sexual indulgence, without protection, which "binds a life to a life" via the unplanned child. We know that "neither one wanted to remain alone" as the pregnancy progressed, which implies that if the pregnancy was unplanned, at least the man involved was ready to take responsibility.
  • This was used as the B-side of "Learning To Fly." (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington, for all above)
  • Dave Gilmour wrote this song with Phil Manzanera of Roxy Music. Working with different collaborators seemed to bring out different sides of Gilmour's personality, which was reflected in the lyrics.
  • This song opens with the sound of the alarm on Dave Gimour's houseboat studio. Appearing on the Floydian Slip TV show, sound engineer Andy Jackson explained that the alarms were triggered by him entering an incorrect code into the security system. (thanks, Ryan - Largo, FL)

No matter what the weather, we be getting our cheddar

    For a better tomorrow

Coach, put me in the game
I'm for real, other peoples tryna to put me in them chains
Whatever the topic, let's put it in the frame
We can even load it and cock it and put it in they brains
I'm saying, some rappers do it for a chain
Kill yourself, I know killers that'll do it for some change
These veterans is slipping, they ain't doing it the same
I don't slip, set a pick and put a shooter in your lane
Precise, 'bout shoot them at the range
But I ain't tryna shoot it with you rappers, I'll just shoot it at your dame
Y'all never should have threw me in the game
Found a new word for weed, that was so mean
I threw it in my name

My soul laid out on the block like arms spraying
The law hating, warring like Blacks and Caucasians
God versus Satan, I'm laying in the dark
With the Mossberg, waiting, letting off first basing
Slim from the cotton club washing a scrub
Deuce high when he cruise by, spotting his love
Hold the mic like a .38 muzzle to snub
This flow, call it OJ blood on the glove
Above rap, capital G's speak on the facts
Please believe that, meaning that I keep it a stack
He's back, he a beast on the track
The only time that I go soft is probably with your freak in the sack
Feel the bass make sure he shake
    Murder verse, first forty-eight
    Manslaughter, nearly caught a case
I crack heads more than base
Stack bread when I orchestrate, that said y'all the base

Come out they shirts sweating bullets with the Bobby Brown jaw
Dry mouth, grinding back and forth plus he's steaming a Newport
    We all holdin' the torch
A few staircase murders, some burners don't blam right
Guns that kicked around the wall you better stand tight
Full of X, AK's, whilin' in lobbys, bulletproof PJ's
Fuck around and get spunned like the DJ
Csi traumatized by viewing the instant replay

    See ignorance wouldn't allow retreat
So you rather pursue death than admit defeat
    See ignorance wouldn't allow retreat
So you rather pursue death than admit defeat (ay yo, ay yo, ay yo, yo)

I used to be so narcissistic, park the whip and spark the biscuits
Spit hollow tipped shells at the Narcs with quickness
Live to tell the tale, 'cause only God's my witness
Been a long time, change gonna come son, I'm optimistic
I hold the steel like Ron O'Neal
Super fly, do or die, killer hill, Brownsville
Never win, never will, yes I can, yes I will
Put a dot upon your knot then I drill through your grill
Like a dentist, my apprentice speaks with a vengeance
Demented scientists counting bodies in the trenches
That's judges off the benches, got inches for y'all wenches
We plant those hot seeds then drove in cold winters

No matter what the weather, we be getting that cheddar

    The best worst thing
You take the full, full truth, then you pour some out
You take the full, full truth, then you pour some out

Stay up 'til the lights go out
    Stay up, Stay up
You take the full, full truth, then you pour some out

    You, me, us, them
    We're just resurrection men

Us, we were only there, to make you live again

    American Beauty/American Psycho Song Chart
  • The song title covers a lot of pop culture. Both a 1970 Grateful Dead album and an Oscar-winning Kevin Spacey movie have utilized the title of American Beauty, whilst American Psycho is the name of a darkly comic novel about a Wall Street serial killer, which was turned into a film. "Both (American Beauty and American Psycho) depict this obsession with an idea of perfection and imply we might be bad underneath," guitarist Joe Trohman told Billboard magazine.

"I also like the repetition of the word 'American,'" vocalist Patrick Stump added. "What does it mean to be American? I think a lot about how awesome it is here, and how horrible it is, too."
  • Fall Out Boy hooked up with French musician and producer DJ SebastiAn for this track. "We thought about where this all began but razing it and starting again," the band said of the song's creation. "So we reached out to a kindred spirit in SebastiAn- from the past he mined some of the future. the mission is the heart pure and simple as it can be distilled but never fragmented or disguised. through these experiments, that were sometimes lost in translation, we persevered - 'they tried to bury us but they didn't realize we were seeds.'"
  • This samples Motley Crüe's song "Too Fast for Love," which was the title track of their 1981 debut album.
  • Patrick Stump tweeted that is his favorite track from American Beauty/American Psycho, saying, "It's the right level of artistically interesting, but also just fun."
  • Bassist Pete Wentz told HMV.com that the album almost had a couple of different titles. "It was a bit of a struggle, this record is a lot more about modern romance than the last one, but the singles are called 'Centuries' and 'Immortals,'" he explained. "I think we started talking about thresholds, the idea that everyone has a dark side and a light side within them and what makes that change in our culture. The movies are good references and good book-ends, we try and point fans to things we like. Also it rolls off the tongue quite nicely."
  • So who's the face-painted kid on the album cover? It's 13-year-old actor Jake Karlen and the shoot was done in a Los Angeles rented home. Jake told MTV News that it was the band who came up with the face paint concept. "They explained it to me and said they'd put it on my hand first and then my face afterwards," he recalled. "They wanted to see something very dark and angry, very angry. I think I pulled it off. I think I did pretty good."
  • American Beauty/American Psycho sold 218,000 copies in the US in its first seven days, landing Fall Out Boy at #1 on the Billboard 200. It was the band's best sales week since 2007.
  • Wentz told Rolling Stone that when the band were making the album, a tweet from the magazine's writer Brian Hiatt stayed in their heads. "He said that modern rock music isn't modern," said Wentz. "That was a big inspiration for when we were talking with this French DJ sebastiAn about creating something that was like a throwback, but from the future. It's like modern rock of the future. I'm not sure that's even what it is, but it is something strange."

    Custer Lyrics

    Have this one!
    Dat-dat-da, dat-dat-da, dat-dat-da-da-da
    Dat-dat-da, dat-dat-da, dat-dat-da-da-da!

    (Yeah)
    (Right)
Half alive and stark raving free in the line front
Croaching on the purpose of this commercial-free interruption
Due to the prolific nature of this statement
    Listener aggression is advised

    It's strange, whenever I see a gun
I think about just how petty you are
And it blows my fucking mind!
Yeah, it blows my fucking mind!
These days, I never seem to get enough
I’m tired of this shit, I want to go up
    Don't waste my fucking time!
    Don't waste my fucking time!
    Because anything exceptional
    Gets crushed by governed people
    With jealousy and ignorance
    And all that coven equals
    This one, it isn't special
    Collections made of clay
    I'm waiting for the punishment
I know it’s on my way

(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)
Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up

    Irreverence is my disease
It's secondhand, but you know me
The son of a bitch is on his knees
The last man standing gets no pity

    Somewhere on a toilet wall
I read the words you form along
To form a life, they're for my life
And I find myself a truth
Something so profound and now it's sitting there
Surrounded by the damage of the state
    Another victim of the refuse
Now I've been saying this for years
    But you don't comprehend it
I fight hell and I fight fear
    Because I understand it
    Androgyny and insults
Your choice, don't wanna be difficult
You want to win the war?
    Know what you're fighting for

(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)
Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up
(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)
(Cut cut cut me up and fuck fuck fuck me up)

The last man standing gets no pity
With the angel eyes and demon seeds
You're missing what you really need
When all is said and done, you'll see
The last man standing gets no pity

  • George Armstrong Custer was a Civil War hero and subsequently a ruthless Indian fighter. He is famous for the Battle of the Little Bighorn, commonly referred to as Custer's Last Stand, in which a force of 650 men led by Custer, suffered a severe defeat to around 2,500 Indian warriors.

The death of Slipknot bassist Paul Gray and the controversial departure of drummer Joey Jordison meant many doubed whether the band could reach the same heights. This song finds Corey Taylor digging in his heels against all the scoffers. He told Kerrang!: "This is focusing that anger towards the outside world – the people who on one hand want to make us martyrs, but at the same time want to make us bastards."

"And metaphorically," he added, "it's about charging into our last stand, and it's basically saying, 'You know what? Just when you think you've written our history, we're going to rewrite it again, and basically show you that we can take all the abuse that you put out there, and we're not going to lose a step, we're not going to lose an inch, we're not going to lose any ground – we're going to keep coming.'"
  • Here are some more fun facts about George Armstrong Custer from The Encyclopedia of Trivia :

Custer was ranked 34th out of 34 in his West Point United States military Academy graduating class.

In 1864 he was given command of General Phillip Sheridan's Third Cavalry Division as a Major General. The 23-year-old George Custer was the youngest US army officer ever to become a general. When the American Civil War ended he returned to his regular rank of captain.

A redhead with a big moustache. Custer was nicknamed by the Sioux "Yellow Hair the Woman Killer" and "Long Hair."

Custer's numerous beagles, wolfhounds and foxhounds shared his food tent and bed to the annoyance of his wife. His two favorite pets were Turk, a white bulldog and Byron, a greyhound.

As George Custer and his 7th Cavalry left Fort Abraham Lincoln in the Dakota Territory for the Little Big Horn, the band played "The Girl I Left Behind Me."

Custer's last stand was immortalized in Larry Verne's whimsical 1960 #1 hit "Mr. Custer."
  • The song's live music video was filmed during Slipknot's appearance in the 2014 fall at their Knotfest concert in San Bernardino, California.

We Must Have Been Out of Our Minds Lyrics

We said our goodbyes long ago
Never thinking we'd miss each other so
All the memories we can't leave behind
Oh, We Must Have Been Out of Our Minds

    [Chorus]
I thought I loved another, not you
How foolish, I thought the same, too
They both turned out to be the wrong kind
Oh, we must have been out of our minds

Let's forgive and forget the past we've known
And reap together the wild seeds we've sown
Surely they can forgive us in time
That, we must have been out of our minds

    [Chorus]

Yes, we must have been out of our minds

We Must Have Been Out of Our Minds
  • This song became a hit duet from George Jones and his frequent collaborator Melba Montgomery. It debuted on Jones' 12th studio album and peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles charts.
  • Although the song is sometimes credited to Melba's brother, Earl "Peanutt" Montgomery, she actually penned it herself in a used van on the way to California. "I wrote the whole song on the back of a postcard in less than one hundred miles," she said.
  • Bluegrass singer Rhonda Vincent covered this song as a duet with Daryle Singletary for her Only Me album. Because both of them knew the song so well, they mistakenly thought they could knock it out within an hour and be done. Not so, Rhonda told The Boot: "We sang it, and we came into the control room and listened to it, thinking, 'We did a great job, we knew this, we knocked this out.' And we listened to it, and we both looked at each other, and we said, "We've gotta go back in there." [Laughs.] So we sang for another hour, just working out those intricacies. George and Melba made it look so easy."

I get up and I get down
I don't know how to take it
All the pain makes me scream and shout
I wonder if I'll make it
I love the feeling when the magic is just right
There's no revealing what is hidden in the night
Riding on a train that I can't control
No one else to blame and I can't let go
In the darkness I can feel
The things that makes me crazy
Hands of madness cold as steel
    I find it quite amazing
Never forsaking what a dreamer needs to know
Rules meant for breaking and the seeds I have to sow
Riding on a train that I can't control
No one else to blame and I can't let go
It's calling me, It's calling me
It's calling me, It's calling me
    I'm riding on a train that I can't control
See no evil, fear no fright
    Never lose the living
Keep the targets in your sight
    Know the cards you're dealing

She was there, and we started writing some songs together and a lot of cool stuff came out. We sat in a room with a couple of instruments and started to jam. I think that song came from a loop on the Triton. We put that loop on and started playing some quasi-Indian stuff and then the next thing you know, we've got a little bit of groove. One of us comes up with the melody and she says, 'Oh, I've got a good lyric for that.'" (Thanks to Itaal for speaking with us about this song. For more, check out itaalshur.com )

I like the way you smile at me
I felt the heat that enveloped me
And what I saw I liked to see
I never knew where evil grew

I should have steered away from you
My friend told me to keep clear of you
But something drew me near to you
I never knew where evil grew

    Evil grows in the dark
Where the sun it never shines
Evil grows in cracks and holes
    And lives in people's minds

Evil grew, it's part of you
And now it seems to be
That every time I look at you
    Evil grows in me

If I could build a wall around you
I could control the thing that you do
But I couldn't kill the will within you
    And it never shows
    The place Where Evil Grows

    Evil grows in the dark

    Where Evil Grows
  • The Poppy Family was the married couple Susan and Terry Jacks. Terry wrote and produced their songs, while Susan handled vocals, although they both sang lead on this one. In their native Canada, this made it to #6, and it also charted on the American Hot 100 at #45.

Terry started writing the song in the mid-'60s, but didn't finish it until he came up with the chorus, which was prompted by his environmental activism. The song is specifically about the pulp mills in Canada that Terry accused of pumping pollutants deep into the Pacific Ocean along the British Columbia coast.

When Terry scored a huge hit with "Seasons in the Sun" a few years later, he eschewed protest songs in favor of direct action. "This destruction bothered me," Terry told us . "Through songs, I didn't think I could do it as well, so I found the only way to get action is through the media, drawing embarrassment to the government, because the government needs the people to vote."

    how do we survive?

    Mystifying silence
    Talking Peace on Earth

    A jaded revolution
    Disappears without a trace
    without a trace
    without a trace
    Alrigth yeah

Always felt that there'd be trouble
    Mass distraction hides the truth
    Prozac days and sleepless hours
Seeds of change that don't bear fruit

    oh yeah,

    Age Of Reason
  • This song is a journey through several movements of various tempos and riffs. Its raw sound has been compared by some critics to that of Jimi Hendrix, which guitarist Tony Iommi told SF Weekly was because producer Rick Rubin wanted him to play his solos live. "I haven't done so for years," he said. "I've normally put the backing track down, then go in and put solos down. And I'm going, 'Well, I don't really know what I'm going to play yet.' And he'd go, 'Well, just try something.' He encouraged me to try different things, and that's what happened on 'Age of Reason' and 'Damaged Soul.'"

So is it just me, can everyone can see
The world drowning in its own blood?
    Humanity’s decline, dismantled over time
A fossil drying in the mud
Deception and the greed that germinates the seeds
    Of dissent growing all around
Is this the beginning or the end?
    In darkness we descend
And I can’t wait to see it all go down

Standing room only all the world will attend
Front row center to the ultimate end
    Mankind constantly parading its flaws
Tangled in charades of the orthodox laws
Like a firestorm raging out of control
Ignorance of all has taken its toll

That brings finality to the fuss
    Society will bleed
    So watch the violence breed
    And deconstruct the protocol
    And if I’m proven wrong

I’m pretty sure that God still hates us all

  • The song features lyrics concerning the "extermination of mankind." "It's not directly connected to the Mayan Calendar, but everybody always talks about the world ending," guitarist Kerry King told Artist Direct in 2012. "Whether it's with war or disease, that's where I went with it."

You shouldn't question if you ever stood a chance with him
The better question is did you enjoy the dance with him
(Yughh!) I'll probably never pull you chair out, bitch
You know this money grew your hair out, switch
All that shit I bought you wear out
Rich, and I'm the only one I care about
Place none above me, God don't like ugly
Hate me or love me, only he can judge me
    Unpolished, unapologetic
Big willie with the blow, niggas, I am legend
School of hard knock, I attended
Selling hard rock, fuck who I offended
I was a goner, punished by karma
Called him tar baby now he’s transcending genres
The 911 came with the ass shots
A toothless crackhead was the mascot
The owner of the key to that padlock
I’m Jordan vs Cavs for the last shot
    I need all mine, reparations
We growin' poppy seeds on my 40 acres, Push!

    Trouble world, trouble child
    Trouble times destroyed my smile
No change of heart, no change of mind
You can take what's yours but you gon' leave what's mine
I'd rather die, than go home
I'd rather die, than go home
And I ain't leaving without my 40 acres

    40 Acres
  • Pusha explained the meaning of this The-Dream and Rico Beats produced track to MTV News: "It really harps on things that have happened in my life in regards to family," he said, "my brother being my partner, my parents not being together, speaking on how those things altered my views on relationships and so on."

He continued: "One of the lyrics goes:

'Unpolished, unapologetic, might've broke a heart or two, but gave an honest effort
You see my nonchalant attitude is always f--- it/
35 years of marriage, and my mama left it
You shouldn't question if you ever stood a chance with him, the better question is, did you enjoy the dance with him?
I'll probably never pull your chair out, bitch, you know this money grew your hair out, switch
All that s--- I bought, you wear out, rich
But I'm the only one I care 'bout.'

"A lot of people, and men in general, don't recognize that their selfishness towards women in a relationship probably has to do with something that has happened in their life before," Pusha explained. "I like to harp on things like that because people speak about relationships like it's always so blissful but, like I said, my album is also based in harsh realities."
  • Pusha told MTV News that he booked a room in the Los Angeles' Redbury Hotel, where he spent three days writing the song. "Three days without touching the studio. Everybody [was] beginning to think I'm wasting studio time, but sometimes it takes that long," he said. "That's writing it, not liking it, not liking the order of it, not liking the flow of it, ripping it up [and] going back at it again."
  • Pusha's brother Gene "Malice" Thornton was formerly his partner in the rap duo Clipse. After Gene's conversion to Christianity, he changed his performing name to No Malice and concentrated on a solo career. Pusha addresses the difference between him and brother on this song:

"My better half, chose the better path, applaud him
Younger brother, me, a spoiled child, I fought him
I heard that the Devil's new playground is boredom
The California top just falls back like autumn
And they say I'm on the verge of winning
I claim victory with Malice, on the verge of sinning."

Pusha explained to MTV News that he has no problem with No Malice's new direction. "When you're involving my brother, you're involving a whole other aspect of life, which is family, which is love, which is my heart, which is everything to me," he said. "Any decision he makes, I ride with it. Any decision I make, he rides with it."

    Get just what you need

    Want more than you need

    Follow the lead

Near as far from from a balm as the cut

  • This is titled after a California-based synthesizer company that was founded in the early 1970s and made many breakthroughs in the following 15 years, before being taken over by Yamaha in 1987. Noah Bear told Fader magazine: "I feel weird about company names being song titles—maybe if I had used Sequential Circuits equipment it would make more sense."

"The song is about mental systems and ways of thinking - particularly, how we think of ourselves," he added. "I like that there's a really long tail at the end of the song - it's a cool way to start an album. It's like when an orchestra is warming up: there's tones in the beginning, there's silence, and then the music starts. There's this anticipation of, 'Is it gonna start now?'"

    Dirty Lie Lyrics

Time’ll tell the seeds I sow
Got into trouble but you just don’t know
    You thought you had me
    You’re wondering why
    Whosoever told you
    Told a Dirty Lie

Now I’m leaving, what can you do?
Who made you think I wanna be with you
I never settle, I never cry
    And whosoever told you
    Told a dirty lie

    Already I’m winning the game
    Your heart’s gonna break
    And it’s a crying shame
A lesson learned a long time ago
I make sure I take it with me when I go

You’ll be alone when the sun goes down
Toss your name in the list and found
    I never loved you baby
    My oh my
    And whosoever told you
    Told a dirty lie

    Dirty Lie
  • This Jazz-flecked Put Your Needle Down track was written by The Secret Sisters with Bob Dylan. Laura Rogers of the duo recalled to Uncut magazine: "It's such a crazy thing, part of me still doesn't believe it happened. We'd just about finished most of the record when T Bone (Burnett) said 'Bob has sent over some demos for you.' He just said 'Bob,' no surname, so at first we didn't realize who he was talking about."
  • Dylan started work on this song in the '80s but never finished it. A fan of the sisters' eponymous debut, he gave the demo to producer T-Bone Burnett. "The melody was written, the demo has him humming along to what he wanted it to be, and the lyrical hook 'whosever told you told a dirty lie' was already there," Laura Rogers recalled to Uncut. "It was an honor to be invited to complete it but incredibly nerve-wracking."

    Bleeding Me
  • The writing credits on this song go to Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. Jason Newsted , who was the band's bass player at the time, explained that to him, the song is about a person who is being put through mental torture.
  • Some lyric analysis:
"I'm sowing the seeds I take for granted" - He gets what he gives based on what he does to other people.
"Caught under wheels roll" - He can't stop abusing or being abused.
"Feed me a cure" - He is asking for help.
The point of the song is, don't abuse unless you can take the abuse, or don't dish out what you can't take. (thanks, Anthony - Wichita, KS, for above 2)

    Bad Cover Version Lyrics

The word's on the street; you've found someone new
If he looks nothing like me
    I'm so happy for you

    I heard an old girlfriend
    Has turned to the church
    She's trying to replace me
    But it'll never work

'cause every touch reminds you of
Just how sweet it could have been
And every time he kisses you
It leaves behind the bitter taste of saccharine

A Bad Cover Version of love is not the real thing
Bikini clad girl on the front who invited you in
    Such great disappointment
    When you got him home
    The original was so good
The one you no longer own

And every touch reminds you of
Just how sweet it could have been
And every time he kisses you
You get the taste of saccharine

It's not easy to forget me
    It's so hard to disconnect
    When it's electronically reprocessed
To give a more life-like effect
    Oh come on

    Ah, sing your song
    About all the sad imitations
    That got it so wrong

It's like a later Tom And Jerry, when the two of them could talk
Like the Stones since the Eighties
Like the last days of Southfork
Like Planet Of The Apes on TV
The second side of Til The Band Comes In
Like an own brand box of cornflakes:
He's going to let you down, my friend

    Bad Cover Version Song Chart
  • This song was the last single to be released by the band in their original phase before their hiatus in 2002 through to 2011, and the band's penultimate single released to date before "After You" in January 2013. It was released in April 2002 and charted in the UK at #27.
  • The lyrics are a lengthy attempt by the narrator to explain that his former partner's new/current relationship is a pale shadow of what they used to have in comparison. He uses a string of metaphors to compare how this relationship compares poorly to what they used to have, including how Tom and Jerry ended up talking in later series, the Rolling Stones' career post-1980s, and the TV adaptation of Planet of the Apes - the meaning being that all of the above mis-stepped badly and failed to recapture past glories, much like his ex-partner.
  • Humourously, one of the many metaphors used to talk down the narrator's ex-partner's new relationship includes a reference to Scott Walker's 1970 album 'Til The Band Comes In, which featured original compositions on the first side and cover songs on the second side - perhaps this is where the title "Bad Cover Version" partially came from. Either way, Jarvis Cocker wrote these lyrics in advance of the album recording, and later found out that Scott Walker himself would be producing the album and therefore this song.

Cocker explains: "Doing [this song] was probably the most embarrassing moment on the record, for me, because the song had been written a long time before we knew we were gonna work with Scott Walker, and in the end section of the song there's a list of inferior things, but unfortunately in this litany I included Scott Walker's fifth solo LP, 'Til the Band Comes In. Because that record's always mystified me, because it starts off with original material, and it's pretty good, and then suddenly on the second side he just does six cover versions, and it's like he just kind of gets sick of the whole thing and just gives up halfway through the record. So I've always found it a very strange album for that. Then of course when we were working with him, this became a problem for me, because I felt that I had to mention it to him. I didn't want him to suddenly realize it himself, and then come and punch me or something. So I was thinking about it, and it was coming closer to the day when I was gonna have to do me vocal, and I was really trying to find the right moment to broach the subject, but it never seemed to come along. And then one morning, it was getting to be a bit of a problem for me actually, so I was traveling there on the train and thinking: 'Right, first thing, as soon as I get into the studio, I'm gonna have it out with him, I'm gonna tell him, I'm gonna tell it how it is.' So I was thinking to myself: 'Yeah, gotta do it, gotta do it, gotta do it.'

Got off the train, walked into the studio... pinned him up against the mixing desk, and just kind of blurted it all out: "Er, Scott well, I've just got to apologize for something, because, like, okay, at the end of the song, like, I make a reference to 'Til the Band Comes In, right, in a list of crap things, and, what I was trying, y'know, obviously..." And just kind of said all this stuff. And he just kind of looked at me in a very mystified way, of like, 'What is this nutter ranting on about?,' and then it kind of clicked with him what I was on about, and he just laughed and said: 'Well, gee thanks guys, that's the way you repay me.' I think he doesn't actually own any of his old records so I think he'd kind of forgotten that he'd made that one. But for me, it was embarrassing."

Ultimately it was fairly moot, as Walker has since admitted he shares the same view on 'Til The Band Comes In, considering it one of his weaker works - so Cocker was entirely justified to criticize it in the song.
  • The tune itself Cocker credits to Candida Doyle, the band's keyboard player. "The main tune came from Candida. I wrote the words at night, then I went to bed, woke up in the morning and thought, 'I bet they're really s--t, them words'. But then when I sang them they worked alright. When we recorded it with other people it never sounded right - it sounded like a pastiche of something. It's just a pop song but I find it quite emotional."
  • In a pastiche perhaps of the Scott Walker 'Til The Band Comes In debacle, the CD release of this song came in a 2-CD format, with the first CD comprising of the song and 2 B-sides, and the second CD comprising "bad cover versions" of Pulp songs - specifically a version of "Disco 2000" by Nick Cave (of the Bad Seeds) and a Roisin Murphy cover of "Sorted for E's and Whizz."
  • The music video becomes a hilarious send-up of charity singles, in particular "Do They Know It's Christmas?," with a huge litany of popular artists being impersonated and filmed singing their parts a la the original Band Aid single. Ironically, Jarvis Cocker is one of the many artists impersonated (along with Tom Jones, Craig David, Kyle Minogue, Kurt Cobain, Phil Collins and MANY more), yet Cocker himself appears in the video - impersonating Queen guitarist Brian May!
