Sultans Of Swing Lyrics

You get a shiver in the dark,
It's a raining in the park but meantime-
South of the river you stop and you hold everything
A band is blowing Dixie, double four time
You feel alright when you hear the music ring
Well now you step inside but you don't see too many faces
Coming in out of the rain they hear the jazz go down
Competition in other places
Uh but the horns they blowin' that sound
Way on downsouth
Way on downsouth
London town
Check out guitar george, he knows-all the chords
Mind he's strictly rhythm he doesn't want to make them cry or sing
They said an old guitar is all, he can afford

When he gets up under the lights to play his thing

And Harry doesn't mind, if he doesn't, make the scene
He's got a daytime job, he's doing alright
He can play the honky tonk like anything
Savin' it up, for Friday night
With the Sultans
We're the Sultans Of Swing
Then a crowd a young boys they're a foolin' around in the corner
Drunk and dressed in their best brown baggies and their platform soles
They don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band
It ain't what they call rock and roll
Then the Sultans
Yeah the Sultans they play creole, creole

And then the man he steps right up to the microphone
And says at last just as the time bell rings
Goodnight, now it's time to go home
And he makes it fast with one more thing

We are the Sultans
We are the Sultans of Swing

Sultans Of Swing Song Chart
  • This song is about guys who go to a club after work, listen to music and have a good time. They are there for the music, and not for the image presented by the band. The song was a marked change from the waning Disco style and the nascent Punk movement. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • Group leader Mark Knopfler got the idea for song this from watching a lousy club band perform. As the story goes, Knopfler was in Ipswich on a rainy night. He ducked into a bar where a mediocre band was closing out the night to an audience that was maybe four or five drunks unaware of their surroundings. The hapless band ended their set with the lead singer announcing, with no apparent irony, "Goodnight and thank you. We are the sultans of swing." Knopfler got a lot of songwriting ideas from observing everyday people, something that got harder to do when he became famous. (thanks, S.D. - Denver, CO)
  • This was Dire Straits' first single. It was one of 5 songs on a demo tape they used to get their record deal. The tape got played on London radio and started a bidding war for the band.
  • Despite the title, the song is not played with a swing rhythm. (thanks, Mark - West Bountiful, UT)
  • We did our best to learn more about this, but we could neither confirm nor disprove this entry. If you know more about it, send us a note:
There is a CD which contains 24 tracks which were from a production company which recorded various artists between 1989-1995. One of the tracks was by an artist only identified as "B. Wilson." There was an asterisk after his name and on the CD it says that this was from a live show performed at The Warehouse which was in Indianapolis, Indiana. Before Wilson plays his song he says the following:
"I do this thing I cowrote about, I guess, it's been about 12 years ago I wrote the lyrics and a friend of mine used to work a lot of sessions for my old producer, Bob Johnston, and worked a session with this fellow from England by the name of Mark Knopfler. Has his own group over there called Dire Straits. He had this little melody. It sounded like "Walk, Don't Run." And he had this little story concerning a band that nobody wanted to listen to. Only a few people show up to hear. So we got together one night after the session and tossed these lyrics around on a napkin and I guess I wound up writing most of the lyrics to the tune. made enough money to buy a new Blazer that year I remember, so... didn't do too bad. It goes like this..."
Then he starts playing an acoustic guitar, strumming Spanish style and sings Sultans of Swing. The lyrics are pretty close to what Mark Knopfler recorded but are slightly different. (thanks, JJ - Bloomington, IN)
  • Regarding the line, "The band was playing Dixie double four time," Dixie double is a style popularized by Django Reinhradt (and Les Paul in his early years) where the guitar goes quite fast and plays bass as well, all together.
  • Knopfler has said that he is sick of this song because he had to play it thousands of times.
  • The "Guitar George" and "Harry" who are mentioned in the lyrics are George Young and Harry Vander, who were guitarists in the band The Easybeats. George Young is Angus Young's older brother and Harry and George helped get AC/DC recorded.
  • Dire Straits played a nearly 10 minute version with lots of saxophone at Live Aid in 1985. This performance is available on the Live Aid DVD.
  • Their 1998 Greatest Hits compilation Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits was named after this song.
  • System Of A Down sometimes covers this at concerts.
  • According to Rolling Stone magazine in their "100 Greatest Guitar Songs" issue, Mark Knopfler wrote the song on acoustic guitar, then switched to a Fender Stratocaster. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France, for above 5)
  • Alan Freed played trombone in his band named Sultans of Swing. He is credited with coining the term "Rock and Roll" on his radio show in Cleveland in the early '50s. It is ironic that the lyrics, "They don't give a damn about any trumpet playing band, it ain't what they call rock and roll" references the type of band Alan Freed led. (thanks, Samuel - Russell, PA)

    Every Age Lyrics

    Every Age has its turn
Every branch of the tree has to learn
Learn to grow, find its way,
Make the best of this short-lived stay

Take this seed, take this spade
Take this dream of a better day
Take your time, build a home
Build a place where we all can belong

    Some things change, some remain
Some will pass us unnoticed by
What to focus on, to improve upon
In the face of our ancient tribes

Feels so clear, feels so obvious
To each one on their own
    But we are here, together
Reaping what time and what we have sown

We don't choose where we're born
We don't choose in what pocket or form
But we can learn to know
Ourselves on this globe in the void

Take this mind, take this pen
Take this dream of a better land
Take your time, build a home
Build a place where we all... can belong

  • The first single from Vestiges + Claws is a reflective spare meditation on the shared mystery of humanity.

We don't choose where we're born
We don't choose in what pocket or form
But we can learn to know ourselves
On this globe in the void

The song was recorded by Gonzalez in his home, with little more than his guitar as instrumentation.
  • The accompanying video comes in both a standard form and an interactive 360° experience. The visual was produced by the global collective Eyes In Space and features a team launching a camera into the air, that takes the viewer through the clouds into space. "Basically its the realization that we are a fragile blue ball filled with life floating in the void and darkness space," said Simon Morris, who co-directed the clip with Chris Higham. "We wanted to give everyone the opportunity to roam space freely using a unique video capturing technique."

    Suicide Is Painless Lyrics

Through early morning fog I see
Visions of the things to be
The pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...
    [REFRAIN]:
    That Suicide Is Painless
    It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.
I try to find a way to make
    All our little joys relate
    Without that ever-present hate
But now I know that it's too late, and...
    [REFRAIN]
The game of life is hard to play
    I'm gonna lose it anyway
The losing card I'll someday lay
So this is all I have to say.
    [REFRAIN]
The only way to win is cheat
And lay it down before I'm beat
And to another give my seat
For that's the only painless feat.
    [REFRAIN]
The sword of time will pierce our skins
It doesn't hurt when it begins
But as it works its way on in
The pain grows stronger...watch it grin, but...
    [REFRAIN]
A brave man once requested me
To answer questions that are key
Is it to be or not to be
And I replied 'oh why ask me?'
    [REFRAIN]
    'Cause suicide is painless
    It brings on many changes
And I can take or leave it if I please.
...and you can do the same thing if you please.

  • This was the theme song of the movie and TV series M*A*S*H. The version used in the 1970 movie is the complete song, while the TV show used a much shorter instrumental version. M*A*S*H might be the most successful TV adaptation of a movie, at least until Buffy The Vampire Slayer came along.
  • The lyrics used in the movie intro were written by Mike Altman. He is the son of Robert Altman, who got a big break when he directed M*A*S*H. Robert Altman went on to direct Popeye, Cookie's Fortune and Gosford Park.
Altman penned the lyrics at the age of only 14. His father told Johnny Carson that, while he himself was paid only $70,000 for directing the film, Mike made over a $1 million from the song.
  • Marilyn Manson covered this in 2000 as the theme for the sequel to the movie The Blair Witch Project. Manson said this is "More depressing and offensive than anything I've ever written."
  • In 2006, this was covered by Lady & Bird, which is a side project of French singer Keren Ann.
  • In 1992 the Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers covered this for the NME 40th anniversary album Ruby Trax. Released as a single, it peaked at #7 in the UK.

    Say I won't
I might do it just to show you
I might do it just to show you
I might do it just to show you
We be like la, la, la, la

From the same city as the B-I-G
Wanna serve these bars, gotta see ID
Now I'm on their radar, where it beat I be
Was a slave for the cars, then we got free
Used to only wanna pull up in a black sport
Just a white man excelling in a black sport
Now I'm really doin' pull ups
Got a honeymoon for the summer tryna get a six-pack for it
Say I won't catch 'Crae slippin' in the studio at like 3 AM
Autograph that forehead with a Sharpie pen and then Instagram
Might swag out a fanny pack
    I might bring Velour back
Nobody wanna change the game, man y'all just want more trap
Okay, say I won't rap over bagpipes
Say I won't talk about that price
To know Christ and live life like every night my last night
'Bout to switch up the program
    I rock name-brand, I rock no brand
My whole life GoPro cam, got rap like I had no fans, nope
They say, I know I say, "veto"
Danny DaVito, and Al Pacino, those are my people
    Also I'm rockin' the speedo
This that casino, you bet your revenue
Thinking you'll stop me, no never not letting you
You must be high on that medical thinking I won't
But I know better, know that I bet I do (kill 'em, ooh)

Say I won't bring my own bottle of Pellegrino to the movies with me
    Say I won't
Look, I'm from an era of fast living and mass terror
Boys cover them cover girls like mascara
I don't need to keep a gun and a mask ever
I still make 'em put their hands up, ask Derek
My role manager damage all of you amateurs
Sneaking up on a tour bus with a demo to hand to us
When I was younger, I just wanted a chain
Now a chain of events has afforded a change
See, I been a rebel since back in the day, I don't follow the people
I follow the leader through valleys and shadows of death and I fearin' no evil
So say I won't do it, say I won't turn the music up and get to it
Won't come down H-Town all the way to their town
In the old school, drop top Buick
And I'm getting, maybe 8 or 9 miles to the gallon
    Still feeling like a stallion
I got Andy ridin' shotgun with 30 gold chains on, talking about he Italian
Say I won't go drop a double album, and rap double time on all dub-step
Got no producers, just me rockin' over beatboxin' by Dougie Fresh

  • Lecrae explained the message behind this ode to being different in an interview with Artist Direct : "I think a lot of times entertainers try to carry themselves in this impenetrable picture of perfection," he said. "I'm going to break the status quo. Say I won't. I don't care."

"I'm a dad. I don't mind being a dad, 'Look at all of these shoes I've got. I've got an incredible shoe collection. I'll sell them all and take my kids to Chuck E. Cheese. I don't care. It's not that serious. Let's enjoy life,'" Lecrae added "That's what it's about."

  • The song's music clip features younger versions of Lecrae and Andy Mineo juxtaposed with their current selves. "A throwback to when I didn't have to pop a molly to have a good time, when dudes could smile and dance."
  • The video was premièred during halftime of the December 16, 2014 Brooklyn Nets vs. Miami Heat game at the Barclays Center. "Who else can say they did that? I like the innovation of it," Lecae said.

    No one knows, never will
    Mostly me, but mostly you

When you beg you just complain
The more I come, more I try

    Nashville its burning tonight
You turn me right round, baby like a forty-five
And I'm feeling every song that this town could write
Well the fire in my head
And the tremor in my chest
Just take one look in my eyes and they will confess

  • Mat Kearney told Billboard magazine he was obsessed with the idea of making the song's music video with drone technology. So he shot the entire clip in the Los Angeles River bed in just a single take, "with this crazy helicopter drone flying around our heads."

The video was shot at the busy 4th Street Bridge in Los Angeles, which famously featured in the Grease movie. "It took a tremendous amount of planning and choreography to make sure everyone was in the right place at the right time," Kearney told Billboard. "After I sang the first verse on the bridge we had to drive like bank robbers to get down to the riverbed in time for me to make the last scene."

"We thought it would be really cool to shoot the video with a group of dancers almost like an urban 1990's Grease performance," he continued. "Finally when we pulled off a few takes, and I watched the playback I was blow away with how much life and heart the video had."
  • The song merges vintage synths, a slap bass, handclaps, a hip-hop cadence, and uplifting melodies. "I picked up my guitar, and the song basically fell in my lap," Kearney recalled. "It was so simple. I wanted to bring in some 90's influences and make it groovier than people would expect from me. I was inspired by Cyndi Lauper's 'Time After Time', and it puts a love song in the context of Nashville where I live."

  • This was the first single from Bush. The lyrics are about youth culture.
  • Lead singer Gavin Rossdale made reference to two of his favorite people in one of the lyrics: Tom Waits and Allan Ginsburg. The line "Rain Dogs howl for the century" refers to the Waits album Rain Dogs (also a "song), and the Ginsburg poem Howl.
  • The line "Minnie Mouse has grown up a cow, Dave's on sale again" refers to David Bowie, whose song "Life On Mars" contains the line: "Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow, Lennon's on sale again."
  • In an interview with Guitar World, guitarist Nigel Pulsford said that the solo in the song was "Probably recorded after a few drinks." (thanks, Corey - Boston, MA)
  • This was the first song Bush made a video for. It was directed by Matt Mahurin, who had done videos for U2, Peter Gabriel, and Alice in Chains.
  • This song helped bring the word "asshole" into the mainstream. The first verse contains the line "Should I fly Los Angeles, find my asshole brother," which most radio stations left as is. This type of profanity would have been removed just a few years earlier, but standards of acceptable profanity were being lowered. The TV show NYPD Blue was using it on primetime US TV, something that had never been done before.
  • KROQ, an influential radio station in Los Angeles, started playing this in 1994. Their airplay helped break the song in the US.
  • Bush included two versions of this song on their 1997 album Deconstructed: The Lhasa Fever Mix and the Derek DeLarge Mix. In the DeLarge Mix, you can hear Gavin Rossdale's ex-girlfriend Jasmine Lewis (subject of "Glycerine"), singing "no sex in your violence."
  • In 1996, No Doubt was Bush's opening act for about three months on an American tour. During this tour, Rossdale took up with No Doubt lead singer Gwen Stefani, leading Rossdale's bandmates to refer to this song as "Everything Gwen." Stefani and Rossdale later married.

  • The Endless River is entirely instrumental until the final song. Asked by Rolling Stone if this had always been the plan, drummer Nick Mason replied: "Initially, we hadn't made a decision about that at all. If some of the material had been more suited to vocals, that might have been the way forward. Once we worked out there was really only one real song on it, I quite liked the idea."

Now if there's a smile on my face
It's only there trying to fool the public
But when it comes down to fooling you
Now honey that's quite a different subject

But don't let my glad expression
    Give you the wrong impression
'Cause really I'm sad, Oh I'm sadder than sad
Well I'm hurt and I want you so bad
Like a clown I appear to be glad ooh yeah

    CHORUS:

Well they're some sad things known to man
But ain't too much sadder than
The Tears of a Clown when there's no one around
Oh yeah, baby baby, oh yeah baby baby

Now if I appear to be carefree
It's only to camouflage my sadness
And honey to shield my pride I try
To cover this hurt with a show of gladness
But don't let my show convince you
That I've been happy since you
'cause I need to go, oh I need you so
Look I'm hurt and I want you to know
For others I put on a show

    CHORUS

    Just like Pagliacci did
I try to keep my surface hid
Smiling in the crowd I try
But in a lonely room I cry
    The tears of a clown
When there's no one around, oh yeah, baby baby
Now if there's a smile on my face
    Don't let my glad expression
    Give you the wrong impression
Don't let this smile I wear
Make you think that I don't care
    'Cause really I'm sad

The Tears of a Clown Song Chart
  • Smokey Robinson based this song on the Italian opera Pagliacci, which is about a clown who must make the audience laugh while he weeps behind his makeup because his wife betrayed him. In the last verse, Robinson sings: "Just like Pagliacci did, I try to keep my surface hid."

Robinson heard the Pagliacci story when he was young, and always found it intriguing.
  • Stevie Wonder came up with the music for this song with a top Motown producer named Hank Cosby. They recorded an instrumental demo and asked Robinson to complete the song - it was common practice for Motown writers to work on each other's songs at the time.

Robinson listened to the song for a few days and decided it sounded like a circus - he came up with the lyrics based on the clown. "I was trying to think of something that would be significant, that would touch people's hearts, but still be dealing with the circus," said Smokey. "So what is that? Pagliacci, of course. The clown who cries. And after he makes everyone else happy with the smile painted on his face, then he goes into his dressing room and cries because he's sad. That was the key."
  • A variety of instruments, including a bassoon, were used to create the circus sound. The piccolo was played by Jim Horn, who played saxophone or flute on albums by The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys, U2 and many others.
  • The low, honking instrument that helps create the circus atmosphere in this song is not a saxophone, an oboe or a tuba, but a bassoon. Motown had their own house band (The Funk Brothers), but would sometimes use members of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra when they needed to expand a song's sonic palette. This was the case on "The Tears of a Clown" - Charles Sirard from the orchestra was brought in to play the bassoon.
  • With his group The Miracles, Robinson had a big hit in 1965 with "The Tracks Of My Tears," and the tears theme led many listeners to believe that this was a sequel. Robinson said he didn't notice any similarity until it was pointed out to him, but noted that the songs both deal with "contradictions of desire."
  • Released on the Make It Happen album in 1967, this song wasn't released as a single until three years later. Neither Smokey Robinson nor Stevie Wonder (co-writers of the song) thought it had much hit potential and didn't push for it - the ballads "The Love I Saw in You Was Just a Mirage" and "More Love" were chosen as singles from the album.

In the UK, Smokey Robinson & the Miracles had a tough time finding an audience - "I Second That Emotion" made #27 in 1967, and a re-release of "The Tracks Of My Tears" hit #9 in 1969, but that was all they had for UK chart entries to that point. By 1970, their British distributor was so frustrated that he asked Karen Spreadbury, who was head of a Motown fan club in England, to pick a single from the Make It Happen album. She chose "The Tears of a Clown" - the last song on the album. The song was issued as a single in the UK and shot up the charts, rising to #1 in August, 1970. Motown took note and released the song in America a short time later, and in December it rose to #1 on the Hot 100, giving the group their first chart-topper.
  • The lyrics, "Just like Pagliacci did, I try to keep my sadness hid" are also in the 1964 song called "My Smile Is Just A Frown (Turned Upside Down)" written partly by Smokey Robinson, sung by a Motown artist named Carolyn Crawford. The song has similar meaning. (thanks, Kenneth - Auckland, New Zealand)
  • In the UK, this song was re-released in 1976, going to #34. In 1979, a cover version by The Beat (known as "The English Beat" in America), made #6 UK. This version was titled "Tears of a Clown," leaving out the the.
  • This was an influence on the 1979 song "Bed and Breakfast Man" from the UK ska band Madness.

  • This Brian May composition was first recorded by Queen in 1983 for their The Works album, but it never made the final tracklisting. May's wife Anita Dobson laid down a version on her 1988 Talking of Love album, featuring her husband on guitar. Fans finally got to hear The Queen version of the ballad when it was included on their 2014 Queen Forever LP with newly recorded guitar parts and new backing vocals from May and Roger Taylor.
  • The song was remixed by William Orbit using Freddie Mercury's original vocals and released in 2014 to raise funds for Coca Cola RED campaign to help combat AIDS. May said. "It's been 23 years since the world lost our beloved Freddie Mercury. We've made extraordinary progress in the fight against AIDS in that time. But we cannot simply rest on the fact that the treatment is available. We must ensure that it is provided. Roger and I are proud to lend this rediscovered song to the RED campaign, in the hope that Freddie's powerful voice can inspire the world yet again."

  • This was written by Huey "Piano" Smith, a popular New Orleans piano player who wrote the song "Rockin' Pneumonia." He recorded the original version in New Orleans with Gerri Hall.
  • 19-year-old Frankie Ford was brought in to record a younger sounding, more commercially successful vocal track than the blues-based original. It worked, as the song became a hit.
  • The song was originally recorded by Huey Smith and the Clowns, but Frankie Ford's lead vocal replaced Huey Smith's while the group was on tour. Smith was furious when he heard the finished product. It was credited to Frankie Ford with Huey "Piano" Smith and The Clowns.
  • The idea of the bells and the horns came from Ace Records' management. The producers and musicians were aghast as the sound effect horns were in a different key than the song's real horn section.
  • Ford re-wrote some of the lyrics so he could get a songwriter credit. Smith really got screwed on this one.
  • Herman's Hermits cover version was a hit at the peak of the first British Invasion. (thanks, Brad Wind - Miami, FL, for above 3)
  • This was one of many songs used as a nickname by ESPN announcer Chris Berman. He used it for a baseball player: outfielder Jose "Won't You Let Me Take You On A Sea" Cruz.

Whoa, oh oh oh oh whoa oh oh oh oh oh oh

Play the lotto you might win it.
It's like 25 for life so you bust out of prison.

Something's in the air, something's in the air

It's like that feeling when you're just about to kill it,
Take your last shot you know you're gonna hit it.

Somethings in the air, somethings in the air

    Whoa oh oh oh oh

Something Big I feel it happening
    Out of my control
Push and pull and then it's grabbing me,
Feel it in my bones like

  • The song was written by Shawn Mendes, Ido Zmishlany, and Scott Harris while Mendes was on tour with Austin Mahone in the summer of 2014. Songwriter/producer, Ido Zmishlany , revealed in our interview how Mendes' extremely fast and unexpected success inspired the tune. "If you can imagine, we're on this tour bus driving to these 3,000 seat shows where all these kids are singing every single word to the songs that we just wrote three months ago with a kid that wasn't signed yet," he said. "It was insane how quickly it all happened. I think the song was just a reflection of it."
  • Shawn told MTV News this "upbeat" single sends a positive message to his fans. "The song was written on our tour bus over the summer, and it's meant to be a very positive song about good things happening to people."

"When we wrote it, it just felt right because it really speaks on how things have happened so fast for me," he added, "and how in general good things can happen to anyone if they just stay positive."
