Proof of Life Lyrics

Do you suffer in silence?
Do you live your life in your dreams?
Do you walk in defiance?
To escape from reality
Are you caught in the headlights standing still?
Don’t you wish you could run away?
Have you lost your desire waiting for
Someone to save you?
But no one came.

What’s your Proof of Life?
You can’t deny the truth that hits you right between the eyes.
So just name your price.
I’ll give anything to justify the reason I’m alive
What’s your proof of life?
What’s your proof of life?

Are you playing the victim
When you know that you volunteered?
No excuse for your sickness,
It’s your choices that got you here.
Are you caught in the headlights standing still?
Don’t you wish you could run away?
Have you lost your desire waiting for,
Someone to save you?
But no one came.

What’s your proof of life?
You can’t deny the truth that hits you right between the eyes,
So just name your price.
I’ll give anything to justify the reason I’m alive
What’s your proof of life?
What’s your proof of life?

Someone to save you?
But no one came

What’s your proof of life?
You can’t deny the truth that hits you right between the eyes,
So just name your price.
I’ll give anything to justify the reason I’m alive.
What’s your proof of life?
What’s your proof of life?

You’re the proof of life

Proof of Life
  • The title track of Scott Stapp 's second solo album, the former Creed frontman penned the song with Tyler Connolly from Theory of a Deadman. Stapp recalled the story of the tune to Artist Direct : "We got together. We were sitting around. I came in, and I had an idea. I had the music already in my mind for that song. I was playing it on guitar. I looked up at the guys and said, 'Do you have any ideas?' Tyler said, 'I've got three words, Proof of Life.' I instantly was like, 'Oh yeah!' I ran to the microphone after we laid down a sketch of the music and began to freestyle with that thought process in mind. The song was born then."

"At the end of the album, when all of the songs were done, it was the perfect fit to summarize what this body of work meant," Stapp continued. "It was exactly what I was trying to do subconsciously but hadn't really quantified it yet. It's great how that came about."

Stay Together for the Kids Lyrics

    It's hard to wake up
When the shades have been pulled shut
    This house is haunted
    It's so pathetic
It makes no sense at all
I'm ripe with things to say
The words rot and fall away
What stupid poem could fix this home
    I'd read it every day

    So here's your holiday
Hope you enjoy it this time
    You gave it all away
    It was mine
So when you're dead and gone
    Will you remember this night
    Twenty years now lost
    It's not right

    Their anger hurts my ears
Been running strong for seven years
    Rather than fix the problems
    They never solve them
It makes no sense at all
    I see them everyday
We get along, so why can't they?
If this is what he wants
And this is what she wants
Then why is there so much pain?

    So here's your holiday
Hope you enjoy it this time
    You gave it all away
    It was mine
So when you're dead and gone
    Will you remember this night
    Twenty years now lost
    It's not right

    So here's your holiday
Hope you enjoy it this time
    You gave it all away
    It was mine
So when you're dead and gone
    Will you remember this night
    Twenty years now lost
    It's not right
    It's not right
    It's not right
    It's not right

  • Tom DeLonge wrote this about his parents' divorce. He was 16, and his parents had just told him they were going to get a divorce. He left the house to sit in his car and write this song.
  • Mark Hoppus of blink-182 also had parents that divorced. (thanks, Nataliapalooza - Brampton, Canada, for above 2)
  • This is one of the songs on the album that indicates the start of a slow maturing process for the boys in blink-182. Here, they began tackling issues with more seriousness than in their previous efforts. They still retained their sense of humor, though, as indicated by the title of the album (say it quickly).

I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) Lyrics

I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me)
  • When John Landis was asked how he got Aretha Franklin to appear in his 1980 film The Blues Brothers, he replied: "I asked her." The point being that the Queen of Soul had fallen out of favor and was looking for work (many other music legends - Ray Charles, Tina Turner and Roy Orbison among them - were also at career nadirs). Her fortunes were revived by her 1985 album Who's Zoomin' Who, which contained two US Top 10 hits: the title track and "Freeway of Love." It took this duet with George Michael, however, to return her to the top of the chart, where she had not been for 20 years (with "Respect").

Michael was coming off a string of hits with his group Wham!, but had not yet released his first solo album, Faith, which came out later in 1987.
  • This was was written by Simon Climie and Dennis Morgan. The pair met in 1983 after Morgan attended an Everly Brothers concert. It was the third song they wrote together. Morgan explained in The Billboard Book of Number One Hits: "That was one of those songs that came out of mid air – a gift from above, if you will."
  • The song was not originally written as a duet. Climie and Morgan pitched the song to Tina Turner as well to Aretha Franklin and Arista Records head Clive Davis. It was Davis' idea to get Franklin and George Michael to record the song as a duet.
  • Narada Michael Walden, who worked with Aretha on her Who's Zoomin' Who album, produced this track. He also produced the song this displaced at the top spot of the Hot 100: "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" by Starship.
This made him the eighth producer in the Rock Era to score back-to-back #1 hits.
  • George Michael usually did his own production work. Before recording this song, he had only been produced by someone else on one occasion: the "Do They Know It's Christmas?" single by Band Aid.

Michael was so used to self-producing that he had a difficult time knowing when to stop singing. Narada Michael Walden explained: "He looked at me with those innocent virgin eyes, like he'd never been told, 'you oughta stop, kid.'"
  • Michael wrote about his experience recording this song in his book, Bare, saying that he and Franklin recorded the song together but did their ad-libs separately. He also went on to praise Walden for being "brilliant" at getting a good atmosphere in the studio.

Michael admitted to being nervous, but he knew there was no point in trying to copy Franklin's style. "Nobody can emulate Aretha Franklin," he said. "It's stupid to try. I just tried to stay in character, keep it simple - it was very understated in comparison to what she did."
  • In 1987, Franklin and Michael won the Best R&B Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal Grammy for this song.

    Gone Away Lyrics

    Maybe in another life
    I could find you there
    Pulled away before your time
    I can't deal it's so unfair

    And it feels
    And it feels like
    Heaven's so far away
    And it feels
    Yeah it feels like
    The world has grown cold
    Now that you've Gone Away

    Leaving flowers on your grave
    Show that I still care
But black roses and Hail Mary's
Can't bring back what's taken from me
    I reach to the sky
    And call out your name
    And if I could trade
    I would

    And it feels
    And it feels like
    Heaven's so far away
    And it stings
    Yeah it stings now
    The world is so cold
    Now that you've gone away

    A Long December Lyrics

A Long December and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can't remember the last thing that you said as you were leavin'
Now the days go by so fast

And it's one more day up in the canyons
And it's one more night in Hollywood
If you think that I could be forgiven I wish you would

The smell of hospitals in winter
And the feeling that it's all a lot of oysters, but no pearls
All at once you look across a crowded room
To see the way that light attaches to a girl

And it's one more day up in the canyons
And it's one more night in Hollywood
If you think you might come to California I think you should

Drove up to Hillside Manor sometime after two a.m.
And talked a little while about the year
I guess the winter makes you laugh a little slower,
Makes you talk a little lower about the things you could not show her

And it's been a long December and there's reason to believe
Maybe this year will be better than the last
I can't remember all the times I tried to tell my myself
To hold on to these moments as they pass

And it's one more day up in the canyon
And it's one more night in Hollywood
It's been so long since I've seen the ocean I guess I should

    Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

    A Long December
  • During the taping of a VH1 Storytellers performance, lead singer Adam Duritz talked about the song:
"In the middle of December of '95 my friend Jennifer got run over by a car, just creamed; and I spent that whole month, while we were just beginning the record and most of January and February in the hospital. Each morning and early afternoon then I'd go to the studio, the house where we were recording, and we'd play all afternoon and all night. It was a very weird time because there is a lot of stress, not that it's a big deal being a second album, but any album. They're just not that easy to make. It's a very stressful process, especially when you're first starting out. I spent a lot of time in the hospital which is pretty weird. But one day I just left the studio about 2 in the morning, and I went to my friend Samantha and Tracy's house which is Hillside Manor, that's what we call it anyway, it's just a little house and I sat there talking with them. I woke them up, got them out of bed and made them talk to me for a couple hours, then I went home to my house. I wrote this song between about 4 and 6 and then went to the hospital the next day, and came to the house and I played it for the guys before dinner and taught it to them after dinner. We played it about 6 or 7 times. It was take number 6. We just stopped, that was it. We recorded the song, it was done. We all went into the kitchen and had a cold beer, I grabbed Brad our engineer and ran back out about 5 minutes later, had him play the tape three times, just recorded all the harmonies, and we've never touched it since, that was it. It's a completely live song except for the harmonies. It's a song about looking back on your life and seeing changes happening, and for once for me, looking forward and thinking, ya know, things are gonna change for the better - 'maybe this year will be better than the last' - and so, like a lot of songs on the end of an album it's not about everything turning out great, but it at least it is about hope... and the possibilities..." (thanks, Scott - Memphis, TN)
  • Duritz was dating the actress Courteney Cox when he wrote this song - the line "the way that light attaches to a girl" is about her. Cox also appeared in the video (not her first - she was in Bruce Springsteen's video for "Dancing In The Dark").

Duritz, who also dated Cox' Friends co-star Jennifer Aniston, wrote the song "Monkey" about Courteney.

    Men go working

    L O X
    J. Lo
We off the block this year
Went from a little to a lot this year

You hear LOX in your ear
Yea, we're at the airport out decline from the block
    Where everybody air-forced-out
With a new white Tee, you fresh
Nothin' phony with us, make the money, get the mansion, bring the homies with us

Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got
I'm still, I'm still Jenny From The Block
Used to have a little, now I have a lot
No matter where I go, I know where I came from (from the Bronx!)
Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got
I'm still, I'm still Jenny from the block
Used to have a little, now I have a lot
No matter where I go, I know where I came from (from the Bronx!)

From In Living Color and movie scripts
To On the 6 to J. Lo to this headline clips
I stayed grounded as the amounts roll in
    I'm real, I thought I told you
    I really been on Oprah
    That's just me
Nothin phony, don't hate on me
What you get is what you see

Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got

I'm down to earth like this
    Rockin this business
    I've grown up so much
I'm in control and loving it
    Rumors got me laughing, kid
Love my life and my public
    Put God first
Then can't forget to stay real
    To me it's like breathing

Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got

It take hard work to cash checks
So don't be fooled by the rocks that I got, now assets
You get back what you put out
Even if you take the good route
    Can't count the hood out
After a while, you know who to blink with
Just keep it real with the ones came in with
Best thing to do is stay low, LOX and J.Lo
Act like they don't, but they know

Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got

    Jenny From The Block
  • This is about how Jennifer grew up in the Bronx and wants people to know she is still real and despite her fame is still the same person she always was. Lopez is so fixated with her hometown in this song that she references the Bronx 28 times.
  • Shortly after this was released, Fox News did a story about the tensions between Lopez and her old neighbors in the Bronx. The anchor, Shepard Smith, read the following on air: "J.Lo's new song 'Jenny From the Block' is all about Lopez's roots, about how she's still a neighborhood gal at heart, but folks from that street in New York, the Bronx section, sound more likely to give her a curb job than a blow job!" Smith was supposed to say "Block Party," and tried to make the correction, but it was too late. Smith apologized and said, "I have no idea how that happened, but it won't happen again." Our guess is that someone got into the computer system and changed the script. Many news anchors simply read what is in front of them on the TelePromptTer.
  • Lopez starred in the movie Maid In Manhattan when this song was popular. In the movie, Lopez played a maid who falls in love with a wealthy man who does not know she is poor. The sentiment of the movie is similar to this song, as Lopez stays true to her old friends despite a change in social status.

In addition to her movie, Lopez also released her own line of perfume around the time this was released. It was called "Glow by J.Lo."
  • This features guest vocals by rappers Jadakiss and Styles. Styles began serving an 8 month jail sentence for assault shortly after shooting the video.
  • Eleven people, including Lopez, are credited for writing this song. Among the writers are 3 of her longtime producers as well as Jadakiss and Styles.
  • This got a lot of publicity as part of the media fascination with J.Lo. She was on countless magazine covers and constantly in the news because of her impending marriage to Ben Affleck, who appears in the video. Lopez and Affleck never made it to the altar - the couple split up in 2004.

  • Hatriot is a family affair: the group is fronted by Exodus leader Steve "Zetro" Souza, and rounded out by his sons Nick and Cody along with Kosta Varvatakis and J.C Cole.

In our interview with Zetro , he said this song is "my take on how our freedom is always being challenged, especially by our own people."
  • The title is based on a saying popular among gun enthusiasts: "I'll give you my gun when you pry it from my cold, dead hands."

Zetro Souza does not own guns and has never even fired one, but he's sympathetic to the cause because he believes that regulating firearms will infringe on the freedoms granted to American citizens. Like many in the Metal community, he has little tolerance for government regulation, as he has vivid memories of the PMRC intervention in the '80s that resulted in stickers being put on albums that were deemed offensive.

    Eighteen Yellow Roses came today
Eighteen yellow roses in a pretty bouquet
When the boy came to the door
I didn't know what to say
But eighteen yellow roses came today
I opened up the card to see what it said
I couldn't believe my eyes when I had read
Though you belong to another I love you anyway
Yes, eighteen yellow roses came today

I never doubted your love for a minute
I always thought that you would be true
But now this box and the flowers in it
I guess there's nothin' left for me to do
But ask to meet the boy that's done this thing
And find out if he's got plans to buy you a ring
'Cause eighteen yellow roses will wilt and die one day
But a father's love will never fade away
    Will never fade away

    Eighteen Yellow Roses
  • Darin wrote this song for the mother of actress Sandra Dee. Darin met Dee in 1960 when they were shooting a movie together in Portofino, Italy, called Come September. Darin was smitten, and decided it was best to get in her mother's good graces. Every day of the 4 week shoot, he sent Dee's mother 18 yellow roses - this was portrayed in the movie Beyond The Sea with Darin saying, "You always make sure the mama dog likes you before you go near her puppy." Darin and Sandra Dee eloped later that year, and were married until 1967. (thanks, Vinnie - Secaucus, NJ)
  • Musicians on this track included Glen Campbell and Tommy Tedesco on guitar, and Hal Blaine on drums. They were part of the elite group of Los Angeles session musicians who played on songs by Neil Diamond, John Denver, The Beach Boys, and many others.
