The Happening Lyrics

Hey! Life, look at me, I can see the reality
'Cause when you shook me, took me outta my world, I woke up
Suddenly I just woke up to The Happening
When you find that you left the future behind
'Cause when you got a tender love you don't take care of
Then you better beware of

The happening
One day you're up, when you turn around
You find your world is tumbling down
It happened to me and it can happen to you

I was sure, I felt secure until love took a detour
Yeah! Riding high on top of the world, it happened
Suddenly it just happened
I saw my dreams torn apart
When love walked away from my heart
And when you lose a precious love you need to guide you
Something happens inside you

The happening
Now I see life for what it is
It's not of dreams, it's not of bliss
It happened to me and it can happen to you
And then it happened
Oo, and then it happened
Oo, and then it happened
Oo, and then it happened

Is it real? Is it fake?
Is this game of life a mistake?
'Cause when I lost the love I thought was mine for certain
Suddenly it starts hurtin'
I saw the light too late when that fickle finger of fate
Yeah! It came and broke my pretty balloon
I woke up, suddenly I just woke up, so sure
I felt secure until love took a detour
'Cause when you got a tender love you don't take care of
Then you better beware of
The happening

  • The songwriting team of Holland-Dozier-Holland co-wrote this with Frank DeVol. DeVol was the musical director for the film of the same name.
  • Until 1970, this song was the last hit to be released under the name "The Supremes."
  • An instrumental version by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass reached US #32 in 1967.
  • The demo version of this song appears on the 4-CD (and limited edition 5-CD) box set The Supremes, released in 2000. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA, for all above)

  • The lead single from The Grind Date is a diatribe about gold-diggers. The beat was supplied by the California-based producer, Madlib, who has also supplied assists on albums by Erykah Badu and Ghostface Killah. His collaboration with rapper MF DOOM, 2004's Madvillainy, was well-received, topping many critics' year-end lists. In addition, Madlib has released several hip hop records under the alter ego of Quasimoto, which are noted for the raised pitch of his voice as if he was inhaling helium.
  • De La Soul's 1989 debut 3 Feet High and Rising was crucial to Madlib's own development, convincing him to sample from a broader pool of music. "I grew up on them dudes. That album actually changed my production. That's kind of where my whole style for Quasimoto came from," he told Spin magazine.

    All Through The Night Lyrics

    All Through The Night
I'll be awake and I'll be with you
    All through the night
This precious time when time is new
Oh, all through the night today
Knowing that we feel the same without saying

We have no past, we won't reach back
Keep with me forward all through the night
And once we start the meter clicks
And it goes running all through the night
Until it ends, there is no end

    All through the night
Stray cat is crying so stray cat sings back
    All through the night
They have forgotten what by day they lack
Oh under those white street lamps
There is a little chance they may see

We have no past, we won't reach back
Keep with me forward all through the night
And once we start the meter clicks
And it goes running all through the night
Until it ends, there is no end

Oh the sleep in your eyes is enough
Let me be there let me stay there awhile

We have no past, we won't reach back
Keep with me forward all through the night
And once we start the meter clicks
And it goes running all through the night
Until it ends there is no end
Keep with me forward all through the night
And once we start the meter clicks
And it goes running all through the night
Until it ends there is no end

    All Through The Night
  • This was written by Jules Shear, who also wrote the Bangles hit "If She Knew What She Wants." He penned the song in England whilst accompanying his wife Pal Shazar, who was playing some gigs with her group Slow Children. Jules recalled to us : "I went over there with a guitar and a little tape recorder and when they went to rehearse I sat there in this house that they rented and wrote that song. I wrote it really quick so I could go out and have fun in London. I was really good at making sure I had time to write songs. I wrote songs in the morning when they would go off and do their rehearsal and if I got done really quick I could mess around in London all day. I didn't even think about the song till I got home."
  • Lauper was known for her hit "Girls Just Want To Have Fun," which had a quirky video that did very well on MTV. Lauper's producers wanted to find out if she could have a hit without a video, so there is no video for this song.
  • Greek chanteuse Nana Mouskouri not only did a cover of this song but also recorded versions in French and German. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA, for all above)
  • Jules recorded the original version of the song for his first solo album, Watch Dog, which was produced by Todd Rundgren . Regarding Rundgren's production, Jules told us: "He had an idea that it should have the feel that it had on the record, which I really didn't think was necessarily the best feel, but I thought, well, it's fine. Whatever he wants to do is fine. So I just did it the way Todd wanted to do it."
  • Shear knew Cyndi Lauper's producer, Rick Chertoff, from his time in the cult favorite band Jules and the Polar Bears. Jules told us that he got to hear the song. "Chertoff thought it was a great song for her," he said "and he played it for her and she really liked it. Then she said, 'I'd like to write songs with that guy.'"
So the pair got together at Jules' manager's apartment in New York, and wrote "I'll Kiss You" for She's So Unusual and "Steady" for Watch Dog.
  • Jules did all the background vocal parts. He told us that Cyndi had changed the song a great deal by the time they recorded it at the studio, turning what was a mid-tempo folk-rock tune into a pop ballad. "It's still the same song, but the arrangement's different," he recalled. "The first time I heard it was when I went to sing it. It sounded good to me. I figured, if that's the way she wants to do it, that's the way she wants to do it. I never had any problem if anybody wants to do any of my songs any way in particular. That's up to them. That's not for me to decide. So I would never say, 'Oh, that's the wrong way to do it,' or something like that. That would never happen. It just sounded fine to me. And when I put the background vocals on, it sounded even better."
  • The song was released as the fourth single from She's So Unusual and peaked at #5. It was the first hit that Shear had been involved with a top 10 song and he told us: "Having a hit didn't really change my writing thing at all. I was always pretty disciplined at it. It's a simple thing to write songs and not get involved in the other aspects of it. It doesn't necessarily make you any money, but as long as one of them pops through every once in a while, everything's fine. It's definitely good that Cyndi recorded 'All Through the Night.' It's great that it was a big hit and all that. But I didn't really have much to do with it, except writing the song. I made some money off it. I definitely made money off of it. I bought a house. I'm still making money to this day from it. A certain amount goes into my account every six months. It's not exactly the same, but it doesn't fluctuate that much."
  • When the song reached #5 in the Hot 100, Lauper became the first woman in the history of the chart to take four singles from the same album to the Top 5.

    Ask Yourself Lyrics

Well I've tried to live like the way that you wanted me to
Never needed the proof, just followed the rules
I pick up all the pieces and I move my feet as fast as I can
I'm always falling behind, just float in the lines
You want more and ambition's taken its toll on you
Well hey your confidence is fading with your youth

And you say that dreamers always get what they desire
Well I've found, the more I want the less I've got
Is this the life you've been waiting for?
Or are you hoping that you'll be where you want with a little more?

    You're coughing blood again
I know 'cause I clean up the mess every now and then
Fold the line along the seam
Force a smile and never say what you mean
In the promised land in someone else's dream
If you want more and you'll get there
Throw a quarter in the well
    It's okay, you're fine, ambition's not a crime

And you say that dreamers always get what they desire
Well I've found, that the more I want the less I've got
Is this the life you've been waiting for
Or are you hoping that you'll be where you want with a little more?
    Well Ask Yourself

Is this the life you've been waiting for, well ask yourself
Is this the life you've been waiting for, well ask yourself
Is this the life you've been waiting for,
You hoping that you'll be where you want with a little more
    Well ask yourself

    Ask Yourself
  • Over acoustic guitar and fuzzy synth bass, this song finds Mark Foster posing the question, "Is this the life you've been waiting for?"

It was a query that was very much been playing on the frontman's mind after a whirlwind couple of years following the band's breakthrough. "When we stopped touring and I stopped charging forward, I was able to process everything," he explained to The Independent. "I was able to feel things. I just had a lot of questions… I was not at ease with myself, even though, in a sense, I was where I'd wanted to be after so many years of trying."

    Subdivisions Lyrics

Sprawling on the fringes of the city
    In geometric order
    An insulated border
    In-between the bright lights
    And the far, unlit unknown

Growing up, it all seems so one-sided
    Opinions all provided
    The future pre-decided
    Detached and subdivided
    In the mass-production zone

    Nowhere is the dreamer
    Or the misfit so alone

    Subdivisions
    In the high school halls
    In the shopping malls
    Conform or be cast out
    Subdivisions
    In the basement bars
    In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out

Any escape might help to smooth
    The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
    The restless dreams of youth

Drawn like moths, we drift into the city
    The timeless old attraction
    Cruising for the action
    Lit up like a firefly
Just to feel the living night

Some will sell their dreams for small desires
Or lose the race to rats
    Get caught in ticking traps
And start to dream of somewhere
    To relax their restless flight

    Somewhere out of a memory
Of lighted streets on quiet nights

    Subdivisions
    In the high school halls
    In the shopping malls
    Conform or be cast out
    Subdivisions
    In the basement bars
    In the backs of cars
Be cool or be cast out

Any escape might help to smooth
    The unattractive truth
But the suburbs have no charms to soothe
    The restless dreams of youth

    Subdivisions
  • This song is about how narrow-minded and judgmental people can get when they are confined to certain groups - a common occurrence in the suburbs. This is spelled out in the chorus:

    Subdivisions
    In the high school halls
    In the shopping malls
    Conform or be cast out

It tells of how when you don't meet a certain standard you are basically shunned. (thanks, Chris - Bradenton, FL)
  • Rush's drummer/lyricist Neil Peart said this song is "an exploration of the background from which all of us (and probably most of our audience) have sprung.'"

Peart grew up reading adventure stories and science fiction, which for him were an escape from the confines of suburbia. As he got older, he took full advantage of his freedom, embracing travel and exploring other cultures.
  • Mark Dailey, evening newscaster and "The Voice" of Toronto television station City-TV and also MuchMusic, is the voice that repeats the chorus line "Subdivisions."
  • This song marked a turning point for Neil Peart, whose early Rush lyrics were based in fantasy. "I didn't believe yet that I could put something real into a song," he told Rolling Stone. "'Subdivisions' happened to be an anthem for a lot of people who grew up under those circumstances, and from then on, I realized what I most wanted to put in a song was human experience."

    Seasons (Waiting On You) Lyrics

Seasons change, and I tried hard just to soften you
The seasons change, but I've grown tired of tryin' to change for you
Because I've been waiting on you
    I've been waiting on you
Because I've been waiting on you
    I've been waiting on you

As it breaks, the summer awaits
But the winter washed whats left of the taste
As it breaks, the summer awaits
But the winter craved whats lost
    Crave whats all gone away

People change, even though some people never do
    You know when people change
They gain a piece but they lose one too
Because I’ve been hanging on you
    I’ve been waiting on you
Because I've been waiting on you
    I've been hanging on you

As it breaks, the summer awaits
But the winter washed whats left of the taste
As it breaks, the summer awaits
But the winter craved whats lost
    Crave whats all
    Crave whats all gone away

'Cause I've been waiting on you

    Seasons (Waiting On You)
  • Vocalist Samuel T Herring explained this song's meaning to Uncut magazine: "It's a song about the human experience," he said. "It's about love, letting go, learning from your mistakes and always feeling that pull – yearning for a certain love, as time goes by in seasons change."
  • Future Islands made their network television debut on March 3, 2014, when they performed this song on The Late Show with David Letterman. Letterman shouted "I'll take all of that you got!" following the band's passionate performance, creating a meme along the way.

"I remember before the show, looking at some of the previous Letterman performances online and how many views they got, and I was like, 'Oh that's cool, 5,000 views or so!'" Herring recalled to Billboard magazine. "None of us own TVs, and it's been forever since we watched a late show. We didn't really expect that it would become something, because nobody thought that performance would get that reaction."
  • Herring told Billboard magazine the story of the song. "I called the guys the day after we wrote it, probably jammed the tune out in an hour and a half," he recalled. "I went home and took a recording I had made on my computer, wrote the song in 30 minutes by chopping it up and then called the guys and was like, 'This is the best song we've ever written.'"

"Of course, by the time we wrote the rest of the songs (on the album), I was like, 'Maybe it's not the best song we've ever written," Herring added. "I love these other songs too.'"
  • Time Out magazine chose this as their best song of 2014. They said: "A stunning lovelorn lament, inescapably drenched in experience, 'Seasons' was confirmation that music could still be moving, that bands could still break through after years of toil and that in a tough year, the rock 'n' roll dream wasn't totally dead after all."
  • The song sums up a tumultuous two-and-a-half year relationship. Herring told NME: "I was trying to get her to change so that she would love me the way I wanted to be loved. And I tried to change too, until I realized that you can't do that. That's just one of those tragedies of love: it's not always going to work out, even if there is something there."
  • Herring explained the song's meaning. "Seasons was an idea to explain the passage of time in a rocky relationship," he said. "It means as the winter falls apart, by the summer we'll feel love again. Then, as the winter comes, it will get rid of those things we're holding onto."

    (Ahhhhh) (ah)
Do you still remember, how we used to be
    Feeling together, believing whatever
My love has said to me
    Both of us were dreamers
    Young love in the sun
Felt like my saviour, my spirit I gave you
    We'd only just begun
    Hasta mañana, always be mine
    Viva Forever, I'll be waiting
    Everlasting, like the sun
    Live forever, for the moment
    Ever searching for the one
Yes I still remember, every whispered word
The touch of your skin, giving life from within
Like a love song that I'd heard
Slippin' through our fingers, like the sands of time
    Promises made, every memory saved
    Has reflections in my mind
    Hasta mañana, always be mine
    Viva forever, I'll be waiting
    Everlasting, like the sun
    Live forever, for the moment
    Ever searching for the one
    (Ahhhhh)
Back where I belong now, was it just a dream
Feelings unfold, they will never be sold
And the secret's safe with me
    Hasta mañana, always be mine

Counting stars, laying in the grass
Side by side, your head on my shoulder
We talk a lot about nothing much
With every breath we are getting closer

    Parallel, in this universe
Do we light up our hearts just to watch them burn?
Parallel, I will cross the lines
Cause maybe tonight… the stars align!

    The stars align!

What if the one who was meant for you
Was all along right in front of you
Just didn’t see it, it was there all the time
Yeah, feel it tonight, yeah, the stars align

    The stars align

I take the thoughts out of your mind
And put the pieces into my puzzle
Everything I wanna say about you
Is more than enough to write a novel

    Parallel in this universe
Do we light up our hearts just to watch them burn?
Parallel, I will cross the lines
Cause maybe tonight the stars align

    The stars align

What if the one who was meant for you
Was all along right in front of you
Just didn’t see it, it was there all the time
Yeah, feel it tonight, yeah, the stars align

I’d throw a rope around the moon
And pull it close whatever it takes to be with you
    Maybe tonight
    Maybe tonight the stars align

    The stars align!

What if the one who was meant for you
Was all along right in front of you
Just didn’t see it, it was there all the time

  • Heffron Drive was formed by vocalist Kendall Schmidt and guitarist Dustin Belt in 2008 after the pair met each other by chance. The duo came up with their moniker after realizing they lived on the same street in Burbank, California - Heffron Drive. After a short period Kendall joined Big Time Rush and Dustin played as the touring guitarist. They revived the project in 2013, after the last Big Time Rush show was completed.
  • Kendall explained the song's meaning: "It's about two people who are made for one another," he said. "They are always around each other, walking in parallel lines, but never seem to meet up. The song asks, what if one day, the stars finally align and their paths cross."

"I've always been a hopeless romantic and often wonder if I have already met the person I'm going to end up with," Kendall added.

  • This was the Spice Girls first single. It was a huge and immediate hit, as their message of "Girl Power" and quirky personalities went along with the catchy beat and intrigued audiences around the world.

The song was written by Richard "Biff" Stannard and his musical collaborator Matt Rowe with assistance from the group members, who all received writers credits. Stannard had written the song "Steam" for a boy band called East 17, and after a chance encounter with Mel B., he was invited to write some songs for the Spice Girls, which was honing their act. Over the course of 10 days, he and Rowe wrote both "Wannabe" and the group's eventual third single, "2 Become 1." Stannard said that pretty much every waking hour of those 10 days was spent working on the songs; he explained to Pink News: "We wrote 'Wannabe' quite quickly, but it took ages to get it to sound right. I remember waking up on the studio floor with this post-it from Matt saying, 'Press play.' We'd finally got it. So it was luck and hard work."
  • The Spice Girls were formed as a female alternative to boy bands, which were big at the time in the UK. They spent years developing their act and cultivating their image; by the time this song was released, they had already made many media appearances and were ready for the big time.

When "Wannabe" was released in the UK on July 8, 1996, it blew past even the loftiest of expectations, reaching #1 on July 27, where it stayed for seven weeks. Global domination followed - in January 1997 the song was released in the US and in February it went to #1. It topped the charts in at least 10 other countries, including Australia, Canada, Israel, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland.
  • Worldwide, this is the best-selling single by an all-female group.
  • The lyrics are about the value of friendship. The five Spice Girls helped come up with the words and craft the song. Regarding their contribution, Richard Stannard said: "There were seven of us sitting on the floor in this tiny room. Matt Rowe and I would add the backing track and start with rhythms; everyone had their role; Geri was always concentrating on the theme and all the others would chip in with melodies and lyrics."

Talking about how they created the mood of the song, Stannard said, "It was the madness in the room. There would be two or three things going on at once; we would have three or four mikes up and we would record everything then pick the bits we liked and play it back to them."
  • A "Wannabe" is a person who aspires to be someone else, generally a celebrity, and imitates that person. The phrase has very little to do with the song, but makes a catchy title. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • The video was done by the Swedish director Johan Camitz, who was known for his work on commercials. It was shot at St. Pancras Midland Grand Hotel in London, where the girls are seen larking about and making scene. The video appeared to be one continuous shot, although there are two barely noticeable edits. The action was mostly spontaneous, as the girls were presented as individuals rather than a choreographed unit.

Before the song was officially released in the UK, the video aired on the cable network The Box, where it quickly became their most popular clip, setting the stage for a successful release.
  • In February of 1997, this song won a Brit Award for Best Song. In addition, their follow-up hit, "Say You'll Be There," won for Best Video.
  • The line "Friendship never ends" became a credo for the Spice Girls. They used the phrase in a press release when Ginger Spice left the group.
  • The Spice Girls were managed by Simon Fuller, who created American Idol. When his protégé Simon Cowell launched the TV show X Factor In 2011, he hired Richard Stannard, who wrote this song, as a writer/producer for acts on the show.
  • On April 12, 1997, the Spice Girls performed this song and "Say You'll Be There" on Saturday Night Live. (thanks, Jerro - New Alexandria, PA)
  • The big finish in the movie Grease, where John Travolta breaks out some great dance moves in a party carnival setting, was an inspiration for this song. Stannard says they were talking about that scene when they started to write the song, and they built on that vibe with Matt Rowe adding chords to a beat Stannard had on an MPC drum machine.
  • The "Zig A Zag Ahhhh" line was a big attention grabber in this song, and many listeners speculated that it was a bit dirty, as in shorthand for "suck a d--k." Stannard claims it's a nonsense phrase they had been throwing around when they wrote the song, and that it's purely innocent.
  • This was named the catchiest ever hit single in a 2014 UK scientific study by Manchester's Museum of Science and Industry. The result came from an online survey, which asked 12,000 people to name a song as soon as they recognized it. They were chosen at random from more than 1,000 clips of best-selling tunes with participants averaging around five seconds to clock a track.

The Spice Girls' earworm was named in an average of 2.29 seconds, ahead of Lou Bega's "Mambo No 5 (A Little Bit Of)," which was recognized an average of 2.48 seconds. Survivor came third with "Eye of the Tiger" at 2.62 seconds.

    Out Among the Stars Lyrics

It's midnight at a liquor store in Texas
Closing time another day is done
When a boy walked in the door and points a pistol
He can't find a job, but Lord, he's found a gun

He pulls it off with no trace of confrontation
Then he lets the old man run out in the street
Even though he knows they'll come with guns a blazing
Already he can feel a great relief

Oh, how many travelers get weary
Bearing both their burdens and their scars
Don't you think they'd love to start all over
And fly like eagles Out Among the Stars?

He pictures the arrival of the cruisers
Sees that old familiar anger in their eyes
He knows that when they're shooting at this loser
They'll be aiming at the demons in their lives

Oh, how many travelers get weary
Bearing both their burdens and their scars
Don't you think they'd love to start all over
And fly like eagles out among the stars?

The evening news carries all the details
He dies in every living room in town
And in his own a bottle's thrown in anger
And his father cries, he'll never live this down

Oh, how many travelers get weary
Bearing both their burdens and their scars
Don't you think they'd love to start all over
And fly like eagles out among the stars
And fly like eagles out among the stars

    Out Among the Stars
  • In the mid 1980s Columbia Records dropped Johnny Cash from the only label he'd worked for since 1960. Thirty years later, Johnny Carter Cash found among a huge stash of his father and mother June Carter's effects, recordings of some lost 1980s sessions which had been shelved by the record company. A posthumous album containing some of these previously unreleased songs was made available by Legacy Recordings on March 25, 2014.
  • This Adam Mitchell penned story song is the title track of the collection. The track tells of a struggling man who holds up a liquor store. Carter Cash told The Guardian: "The song itself deals with a sadness, it deals with a loss and it's something that we can relate to in our modern society itself."
  • Adam Mitchell is a Scottish born Canadian-raised singer-songwriter, whose resume includes Olivia Newton-John's "Dancing Round and Round", John Waite's "Tears" and Kiss' "Crazy Crazy Nights."
  • Why was the album titled after this song? Carter Cash explained to Billboard magazine: "Originally this body of work was completely untitled. After the fact, we looked at it to figure out what song would make a great statement. This was a song about sadness and tragedy in a person's life who's walking away from facing of a bitter end. There's a great depth of understanding there. But you know, I think being transferred in the title, I think it takes the listener to another place, like perhaps my dad's music spirit lies outs among the stars. It's definitely in our hearts also."

    When We Was Fab Lyrics

Back then long time ago when grass was green
    Woke up in a daze
Arrived like strangers in the night
Fab, long time ago When We Was Fab
Fab, back when income tax was all we had

Caresses fleeced you in the morning light
    Casualties at dawn
    And we did it all
Fab, long time ago when we was fab
Fab, you are my world you are my only love

And while you're in this world
The fuzz gonna come and claim you
    But you mo better wise
When the buzz gonna come and take you away
    Take you away
    Take you away

The microscopes that magnified the tears
    Studied warts and all
Still the life flows on and on
Fab, long time ago when we was fab
Fab, but It's All Over Now Baby Blue
Fab, long time ago when we was fab
Fab, like this pullover you sent to me

    Fab
And You've Really Got A Hold On Me
Fab, long time ago when we was fab

    When We Was Fab
  • Harrison wrote this after the Beatles had split up. It's about the days of Beatlemania, when the group was known as "The Fab 4." It sounds very much like a Beatles song. (thanks, Catherine - Glasgow, England)
  • Jeff Lynne, George's bandmate from the superstar band The Traveling Wilburys and leader of The Electric Light Orchestra, produced this song and as well as the rest of this album. A huge Beatles fan, Jeff also appears briefly in the video for this song (look for the big afro). (thanks, Robert - Berkeley, CA)
  • Ringo Starr played drums on this track and a few others on the album. Harrison says that when he started writing the song, he had Ringo's drumming in mind for the intro and the overall tempo.
  • Harrison states in this song: "income tax was all we had." Excessive taxation was a scourge for him - he wrote the Beatles song "Taxman" on the subject.
  • Gary Wright, who had a big hit with "Dream Weaver," played piano on this track.

I Drove Her Out Of My Mind Lyrics

She gave me my walking papers
And ran off with someone new
    'Cause he bought her things
    My wages couldn't buy
So I turned to ups and downers
    And everything between
Still I can't get her good lovin'
    Off my mind

Well today I bought a Cadillac
    The kind she's always wanted
    I called and asked her
    If she'd like to ride
She said this is our last date
I said that's alright with me
    Cause tonight I'm driving her
    Out of my mind

Yeah I'll take her on a scenic cruise
    Right off of Lookout Mountain
'Cause she said I never took her out
    When she was mine
    She'll see all seven states
As we drive to the pearly gates
    Tonight when I drive her
    Out of my mind

All the papers will read "Lovers leap
    Again off Lookout Mountain"
    'Cause I wrote a note
    That called it suicide
    But my epitaph will say
    "he killed his pain yesterday
When he finally drove that woman
    Off his mind"

Well now here she comes to greet me
Dressed to kill and so am I
Hope she asks me if this
    Cadillac will fly
And I know that I'll die laughin'
When I show her that it will
    When I drive that woman
    Right out of my mind

Hell I'll take her on a scenic cruise
    Right off of Lookout Mountain
'Cause she said I never took her out
    When she was mine
    She'll see all seven states
As we drive to the pearly gates
    Tonight when I drive her
    Out of my mind

They'll say Johnny Cash was quite a smash
    Down here in Chatanooga
Last night when he drove her
    Out of his mind

Yeah that Cadillac dealer's in for a big surprise too
    99 dollars down, 99 dollars a month
Yeah it's gonna be just gorgeous

    (Ooh to the pearly gates)
    (Ooh to the pearly gates)
(Ooh to the pearly gates )

  • This tragicomic cut about a suicidal drive over Lookout Mountain is from Out Among the Stars, a posthumous studio album containing recordings from lost 1980s sessions that were discovered by Johnny Cash's son John Carter Cash in 2012.
