Owner Of A Lonely Heart

This song describes the paradox of loneliness. Once you've been hurt, loneliness is better than a broken heart.

This is the first single from 90125, and was the group's one and only #1 charting hit. The album was a drastic departure from Yes' progressive sound in the '70s, containing distorted guitar and synthesizers that were popular at the time. With help from MTV, Yes suddenly found a new audience, who were sometimes shocked to learn that much of their back catalog consisted of complex pieces that would often run well over 10 minutes.

Those familiar with the Yes catalog were shocked to hear this tightly packaged concoction from the band that once released a double album containing just four songs (Tales from Topographic Oceans). This was a different variation of the band, however, and they weren't opposed to chasing a hit. "It was already deemed to be a hit record," Jon Anderson told us . "The record company had invested a lot of money in making a record. They brought me in to make it Yes. They said, 'This is going to be a hit, and we're going to make sure.' They promoted it like crazy and did a good video - MTV had just started up. So everything just sort of happened at the same time."

The driving force at Yes' label, Atlantic Records, was Ahmet Ertegun, who insisted that this song be a hit. Ertegun held considerable sway, having guided the careers of Aretha Franklin, Led Zeppelin, and many other major acts.

This was written by Yes members Jon Anderson, Trevor Horn, Trevor Rabin and Chris Squire . It was sung by Anderson, who had just returned to the group since leaving in 1980. He told us about his role in writing it: "The song was already finished, but there were no verses. They had tried some verses and it really wasn't working. They had the chorus, they had the arrangement. I came in and all the songs were virtually put together, but there was a lack of choruses here, verses there. I went in for three weeks with Trevor and sort of filled everything in.

I remember sitting with Trevor Rabin and we started off, 'Move yourself, you always live your life never thinking of the future.' That was the line I wrote. And then he'd say, 'Prove yourself, win or loser.' And then he said, 'Jon, I've got to go. You carry on.' So I just carried on writing the lyrics to the verses. The chorus was already well organized by Trevor."

According to Trevor Rabin on the DVD Yes Video Hits , he wrote the bass line to this song and came up with the title in his bathroom (which had very good acoustics), during a "particularly long visit." Rabin says he often sings in the loo. (thanks, Evna - São Paulo, Brazil)

Trevor Horn, formerly of the Buggles, produced the 90125 album. Horn took over for Jon Anderson as lead singer of Yes for for their 1980 album Drama, and after a tour to support the album the band broke up and Horn focused on production work. When Yes re-formed for 90125, Anderson returned along with Tony Kaye, Chris Squire and Alan White, and Horn produced the album. This song hit #1 in the US the week of January 21, 1984, and held the position the following week, when in the UK another Horn-produced song, "Relax" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, claimed the top spot. This made Horn the only producer to have simultaneous #1 hits in both the UK and the US with different songs by different artists.

This song is possibly the first rock hit to use a sample. The drum break at the beginning and the horn stab that shows up a few times in the song sound very similar to a short section of the 1971 song Kool Is Back by Funk, Inc.

It was a rather subtle sample, as producer Trevor Horn used just a tiny bit and processed it considerably, so there is no case for attribution. At the time, there was also no precedent for clearing samples.

The video was directed by the team of Aubrey Powell and Storm Thorgerson, who went by "Po & Storm." In it's full form, the video runs 6:46 and contains various non-musical scenes where the band members transform into different animals. MTV usually played the condensed version, but they played it often, as they were especially keen on rock bands in their early years.

Storm Thorgerson is the same guy who did the artwork for Pink Floyd, including the Dark Side of the Moon album cover. He died on April 18, 2013.

90125's logo was designed on an Apple IIe computer (very modern at the time,) and would be used on Yes' next album Big Generator. (thanks, Wil - Brentwood, TN)

Alan White recalled the recording of his drum part for the track to Uncut magazine September 2014: "I started with a full drum kit and Trevor Horn said, 'Take Alan's toms away.' So I had a base and snare, hi-hat and cymbals. Then they took the cymbals away, I was playing along with the track and they took the hi-hat away! I said,'Wait a minute, guys...' Then we layered all the other stuff on top of it."

This song was once parodied on Mystery Science Theater 3000. Tom Servo thought Yes didn't go far enough by saying "The owner of a lonely heart is much better than the owner of a broken heart...". He wanted them to come up with a comparison between the owner of a broken heart and the owner of other various other things, like a perfectly functional cheese slicer, a pie, a pencil, etc. (thanks, Homer - Versailles, IL)

The original version of this song heard on 3 Feet High and Rising featured the Jungle Brothers and Q-Tip of A Tribe Called Quest. Posdnous recalled to Rolling Stone: "Mase would always play the Commodores record ['Girl, I Think the World About You'] and we figured, let's make a song out of it. We didn't know what it would be called, the idea of 'Buddy' had come up and we had a session planned in about to week to record it, and we had a show with Q-Tip and Jungle [Brothers], meeting them for the first time."

"It was never planned for Jungle Brothers to be on that first album," he added. "They happened to come to that session while we were recording that song and we were like, 'Hey, you want to get on it?' and lo and behold, that's how we became the Native Tongues."

The New York-based Native Tongues posse was a collective of like-minded Hip-Hop artists who would often collaborate together. This song's remix included all the major members of the Native Tongues crew, adding Queen Latifah and Monie Love to the already featured Jungle Brothers and Q-Tip.

The Remembering: High The Memory

Vocalist Jon Anderson wanted to replicate the sound of him singing in his bathroom at home. To accomplish this, the band built a bathroom-like room in the studio, complete with shower tiles. (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, Washington)

Aside from being controversial, Tales From Topographic Oceans is known as the brainchild of Jon Anderson and Steve Howe. To try and compensate for this, they tried to make sure each of the other three musicians had integral parts in the structure of the songs. As explained in the liner notes, Rick Wakeman's extensive keyboard passages throughout the track represent the endless sea of the mind. Unfortunately, Rick Wakeman was displeased with the elaborate production of the album and said while Anderson and Howe obsessed over every little detail during the recording, he spent most of his time playing darts. On the subsequent tour, Wake bluntly showed his distaste for Tales by eating curry on stage while the rest of the band performed tracks from the album. This was written during a difficult time in Donovan's life. He was the first high-profile British pop star to be arrested for cannabis, which had a serious effect on his career – because of the charges he was refused entry to the US until late 1967.

Sunny Came Home

This song is about a woman who "Makes a few repairs" to the oven, then uses the gases to burn her house down by lighting a match. She does this in an attempt to escape her past.

Colvin was inspired by a painting, which she used on the cover of the album. The artist was a friend of Colvin's, Julie Speed. See the painting in Song Images .

Before A Few Small Repairs, Colvin had never written songs about characters - they were always in the first person. She said the record was fun to make in part because she was "feeling comfortable enough to write a story instead of all the songs being so personal."

Colvin was born January 10, 1956 in South Dakota. She taught herself guitar by age 10 and got her break singing backup for Suzanne Vega. (thanks, Crystal - Springfield, MO, for all above)

Colvin's songwriting partner on this and many of her other songs was John Leventhal - he writes the music and she writes the lyrics. Leventhal is married to Colvin's good friend Rosanne Cash. (thanks, John - Stony Point, NY)

This won Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the 1998 ceremony. When she won for Song of the Year, rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard rushed the stage and took the microphone. Apparently upset that his group, Wu-Tang Clan, lost Best Rap Album to Puff Daddy, he rambled about how "Wu Tang is for the children" before he was ushered offstage and a very confused Colvin was allowed to give her speech.

It was Colvin's producer John Leventhal who came up with the iconic mandolin riff that starts out the song. She explained to American Songwriter magazine: "We're longtime writing partners and our co-writing almost always works the same way, which is he has some music already written and I create melody and lyrics to it. Every now and then I'll get a set of lyrics without music or I'll write a bridge or something in a piece of music he's already got but generally he gives me music, I finish it out. That's what happened with 'Sunny Came Home,' he had a whole piece of music and no words and no melody and I came up with that."

In the early 1980s, Johnny Cash recorded a series of tunes with producer Billy Sherrill that were shelved after completion. The singer hung onto the master tapes, which his son John Carter Cash came across among a huge stash of Johnny and wife June Carter's effects. The album was eventually released through Legacy Recordings on March 25, 2014.

This mid-tempo ballad of regret was released as the project's first single. "I really love this song," Carter Cash told Rolling Stone. "The depth that's there reminds me of the real serious stuff that Dad did later in his life. And I truly think it's one of the beautiful undiscovered gems in my dad's catalog."

Among the instrumentalists is a young Marty Stuart, whose mandolin helps color the song. Stuart was a member of Johnny Cash's backing band between 1980 and 1985 and married the Man in Black's daughter Cindy in 1983. They divorced five years later. "I thought I was going to work with the character that has made the Folsom records, all San Quentin, but what I walked into was more of a family show," recalled Stuart to Uncut magazine April 2014. "He was Patriot Cash, working a lot of state fairs."

"I sensed right off the bat that he was doing his duty, that he was musically discontent," Stuart added. "He asked me not longer after I'd been there, 'How are you liking it?' I said, 'Pretty good.' And he went, 'Pretty good?' I said, 'Yeah, the music is not what I thought it was. I love it but...' We didn't have to go much further, because I think he knew what I was feeling, and I certainly knew what he was feeling."

The song was written by Dennis Morgan, Charles Quillen, and Kye Fleming and was also recorded by David Allan Coe. His version was released in December 1984 as the lead single from the album Darlin', Darlin, peaking at #11 on Billboard's Hot Country Singles chart.

The video was directed by filmmaker John Hillcoat, whose resume includes the movies The Proposition and The Road. Hillcoat shot the clip over the course of a month in locations across the United States. "I've been a lifelong fan" (of Cash), Hillcoat told the Guardian. "The first film I made was a prison film [Ghosts … of the Civil Dead] so there's definitely a connection there with the whole Folsom prison thing. I was also inspired by his voice, which has a truth to it at all times - that's always helped me in terms of working with actors, no matter how big."

Speaking with Billboard magazine, Carter Cash commented on the song's lyrical content. "We could take it at face value as a song about a woman, but it's this world we live in, America for that matter, the things that moved on," he said. "In many ways, you gotta look back and see the foundations that were laid are firmly in place. It's good to remember what they were and how we got where we are. We can look at it in many ways, but for me it's just a great communication in my experience with my father. To listen to the song reminded me of who he was and his integrity and strength as a person."

This song is made up of extracts from Brahms' 4th Symphony in E minor, Third Movement. It was arranged by keyboard player Rick Wakeman, who said the piece "was dreadful, but contractual hangups prevented me from writing an original solo track."

Wakeman was also recording as a solo artist at the time, but for a different record company (he was on A&M, Yes was on Atlantic). He did write an original piece for the album called "Handle With Care," but when legalities abrogated that effort, he did "Cans And Brahms" (credited to Johannes Brahms) for Fragile, and reworked "Handle" as "Catherine of Aragon" for his 1973 solo album The Six Wives of Henry VIII.

This heartbreak song finds Musgraves wishing to be left alone in order to move on after a bad breakup.

Musgraves wrote this portrait of a depressed girl attempting to get over a broken relationship with Shane McAnally and Luke Laird. The same trio also penned her Same Trailer Different Park tracks "Blowin' Smoke" and "Step Off."

This was a hard song for Musgraves to write. She explained: "I was going through a bit of a personal down moment and a breakup, and self-discipline has never been something that I've been very good at. So, when this song talks about keeping it to yourself, it's just about knowing and wanting to know how that person feels about you like in a situation, but just knowing that it's not good for you anymore and that you literally have to be the strong person and say, 'Don't tell me, because it's just going to rope me back in.'"

"It's going to create that cycle again, I feel like that's something that a lot of people go through and it's about getting over that hump," Musgraves continued. "That hard part where you're just going to die because this person's not there anymore so literally you just have to be like, 'If you have feelings for me, just put them on a shelf,' like I don't want to hear about them."

The song title came from Kacey's mother. "My mom, she's always sending me song ideas. Here and there she'll text me, and some of 'em are doozies," said the singer. "But she had this one, she said, 'Keep It To Yourself,' one day, and I thought that'd be a really cool song title…I typically don't start writing sessions off with a title, but I brought it one day to Shane McAnally and Luke Laird, and they loved it."

The song was released as the fourth single from Same Trailer Different Park. "I did a little Twitter poll to see kind of what the fans were feeling as far as what they would love to hear next," Musgraves explained. "I've been able to put out songs that are my personal favorites off the record, so this time I wanted to know what the fans would like to hear. There were some that were really high-charting in the poll, [and] 'Keep It To Yourself' was one of 'em. It's one of 'em that I get a ton of people just saying like, 'That is so me right now, and I just really have been through that.' So, it's for me some, but it's also definitely for the fans."
