Sweet Georgia Brown Lyrics

Sweet Georgia Brown
  • This is famous as the theme song of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team, who officially adopted it in 1952. They use it for their "Magic Circles" when the players stand in a circle and pass around the ball, displaying their impressive techniques and dexterity.
  • This was written in the 1920s by Maceo Pinkard and Ken Casey. It was popularized by the big bandleader Ben Bernie in the 1920s, and he was given a co-writer credit for recording it.
  • The most famous version, with whistling and bone-cracking, was a 1949 instrumental recorded by Brother Bones & His Shadows. This is the version used by the Harlem Globetrotters.
  • The original version had lyrics that were about a black prostitute. Many people and groups have covered this with lyrics, including Bing Crosby, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, The Beatles, and The Grateful Dead, and the lyrics seem to vary by cover. The Beatles' version contains the line "In Liverpool she even dared to criticize the Beatles' hair with their whole fan club standing there." The Grateful Dead only performed their version live. (thanks, Crystal - Springfield, MO, for all above)
  • This song was a showstopper in the 1976 Broadway musical Bubbling Brown Sugar, where it was performed by Vivian Reed (who earned a Tony nomination for the role; the production was also nominated for Best Musical). The show lasted just one year on Broadway, but continued on as a touring production. For three years, Bettye LaVette played the lead role in this production.

Walk Like A Man (You Can Call Me Your Man) Lyrics

    CHORUS
Walk like a man, and talk like a man.
Walk like a man, hey baby, you can call me your man.
A little girl asked me what am I gonna' do,
When I get old and blue and worn clear through?
And I say by that time I ought to be in my prime,
    I'm gonna' strut like a cock until I'm ninety-nine.
    I'm gonna' ...
    CHORUS
Sometimes I feel it's gettin' late.
In life -- all that settlin' down can wait,
'Till my routine days all seem the same.
Right now, I've got to get on out, I've got to make my day.
    I'm gonna' ...

Walk Like A Man (You Can Call Me Your Man)
  • Grand Funk drummer Don Brewer wrote this swaggering rocker and sang lead. Says Brewer: "It was just another song we were jamming on in the rehearsal studio, and those lyrics came to mind. I started singing, 'Walk like a man, call me your man.' It came out of jamming along and coming up with chord changes that seemed to sound right with it."
  • The Four Seasons had a hit in 1963 with a song called "Walk Like a Man," which prompted a lawsuit against Grand Funk. As a result, the title of Grand Funk's song was changed to "Walk Like A Man (You Can Call Me Your Man)."

As Bob Gaudio of The Four Seasons explained , you can't copyright a title, but the Grand Funk song took it too far with the lyric "Walk like a man, and talk like a man."
  • This was the follow up single to "We're An American Band," which was also written and sung by Brewer and became their first #1 hit. Grand Funk was a huge concert draw at the time and sold lots of albums. Most critics hated them, but the publicity seemed to have a positive effect on their record sales.

    The Lumberjack Lyrics

I was born in the backwoods
    Of a two-bit nowhere town
Fathered up some rock 'n' roll (baby)
So you mothers could boogie down
    I ain't whistling dixie
    No I'm a rebel with a groove
All around the world they go 'round and 'round
When they dig on my new stainless steel sound

    [Chorus]
    I'm a lumberjack baby
I'm gonna cut you down to size
    I'm a lumberjack baby
And you're the one that gets my prize
And when you hear my motor running
You know I surely be coppin' a rise
So I'm gonna crank it up and cut it down

    I'm a lumberjack baby
    I'm a lumberjack now baby
    I'm a lumberjack baby
    I'm a lumberjack baby
But I ain't jacked my lumber baby
    Since my chain saw you

    The Lumberjack
  • Monty Python weren't the only act to record a song about a lumberjack. Kennesaw, Georgia band Jackyl's debut single also concerns a worker in the logging industry. Their southern rocker peaked at #24 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart in 1992.
  • Yes, that's a real chainsaw solo on the track, courtesy of lead singer Jesse James Dupree. Before they were signed to Geffen Records, a chainsaw bit was part of their stage show, with Dupree cutting stuff up and wielding it as an instrument during jam sections. When Jackyl got their major-label deal, Dupree figured it was the end of the chainsaw, since they were now big-time. John Kalodner at Geffen (who signed the band) thought otherwise, insisting they keep the chainsaw in the show and use it on this track.
  • In our interview with Jesse James Dupree , he said that this song was written and performed the same day in a burst of inspiration. Dupree was headed from Atlanta to South Carolina, where he was meeting the band for a show. Along the way, he wrote the song in his head. Said Dupree: "We got there, and there was a bass guitar right when I walked in the door. I picked up the bass guitar, figured out what key I was doing it in, and told the band that we were going to kick off a three-chord turnaround in A. And it's been 'The Lumberjack' ever since."
  • The song has a blues groove and follows a typical lyrical format of the genre:

    I'm a ____ baby
    And I'm going to ____

The blanks can be filled with any number of metaphors, and in this case they are "lumberjack" and "cut you down to size." And like many blues songs of this vein, it's filled with sexual references.
  • The video was directed by Greg Vernon, who also did Aerosmith's "Eat The Rich." The clip is a mix of live footage, hillbilly clichés, and classroom scenes. As he did in the Aerosmith "Dude (Looks Like A Lady)" video, John Kalodner is in the clip as an apparent woman who turns out to be a (bearded) man. Of course, the chainsaw has a feature role in the clip.
  • Jackyl is in the Guinness Book of World Records for performing 100 concerts in 50 days. (thanks, Wayne - Crockett, TX)

    A.N.I.C Lyrics

Another day wasted out of time
I can't get out of this
    Altered state of mind
    I'm going overboard
    My conscience meets decline
    Into Reality
I know this can't be fine

    [Chorus]
    Cause I'm all messed up
    Making prefect nonsense
Drowning in my doubt too well
    Cause I'm all messed up
Going nowhere fast but circles in my mind
    So blind

Who are these voices in my head
I can't go on like this
    Living like the dead
    I haven't slept so long
    Feeling sad I dread
    I'm talking to myself
    Forgot what I just said

    [Chorus]
Well I hold my only enemy as closely as a friend
And I sold my own reality to further my descent

Self-destruction taking over it's so easy to pretend
Introduction to this nightmare may never end

Can anyone help me drag my heels
    I'm running overtime
I can't hold down my meals
    My mind is racing by
    Staring blankly feels
    Like pulling out my teeth
    While this engine winds

    Crackity Jones
  • Lead singer Frank Black wrote the lyrics about the frighteningly violent (crackity), gay roommate he had when he lived in Puerto Rico in 1985. He recalled to Mojo magazine May 2014: "Looking back, he just had some mental health issues. I found him frightening, a little mysterious." (thanks, Eulbie - New York, NY)
  • Like he did on several Pixies songs, Frank Black inserted some Spanish words and phrases in the lyric. During the six months he spent in Puerto Rico (on an exchange program when he was a student at the University of Massachusetts), Black learned just a bit of Spanish, so it was always a bit disjointed when he used the language in his songs. Here's the translation of the Spanish in this song:

"paco picopiedra" - Fred Flintstone (should really be "Pedro Picapiedra")
    "la muñeca" - the doll
    "hospedaje" - dorm room
    "goofiar" - goof off
    "automovil" - car
  • At Pixies shows, the mosh pits would amp up during this song, as it's a perfect track to release some aggression.

If I came to you Empty Handed
    A barren ocean
    With nothing at all
And if I came to you empty hearted
    Searching for pieces
    After the fall
All I've ever known is how to hide a secret
But I'm tired of going on without believing
And love is not illusion, love illuminates the blind

If I fell into you, would it be close enough
If I finally let you in, would you show me what love is
If I had nothing to give

If you came to me empty handed
I'd bring the ocean to bring you home
And if you came to me empty hearted
I'd find the pieces to make you own

If I fell into you, would it be close enough
If I finally let you in, would you show me what love is
If I had nothing to give

    If I am a promise
Will you let me break again
I will be your congress, I will only let you ban
All I've ever known is how to hide a secret
But I'm tired of going on without believing
And love is not illusion, love illuminates the blind

If I fell into you, would it be close enough

    Don't fret precious I'm here
    Step away from the window
    Go back to sleep

    Lay your head down child
I won't let the boogeyman come
    Counting bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums
Pay no mind to the rabble
Pay no mind to the rabble
    Head down, go to sleep
To the rhythm of the war drums

Pay no mind what other voices say
    They don't care about you
    Like I do
    Like I do
Safe from pain and truth and choice and other poison devils
See they don't give a fuck about you
    Like I do

    Just stay with me
    Safe and ignorant
    Go back to sleep
    Go back to sleep

    Lay your head down child
I won't let the boogeyman come
    Count the bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums
Pay no mind to the rabble
Pay no mind to the rabble
    Head down, go to sleep
To the rhythm of the war drums

I'll be the one to protect you from
Your enemies and all your demons
I'll be the one to protect you from
A will to survive and a voice of reason
I'll be the one to protect you from
Your enemies and your choices son
One and the same I must isolate you
Isolate and save you from yourself

Swaying to the rhythm of the new world order and
    Count the bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drum
    The boogeymen are coming
    The boogeymen are coming
Keep your head down go to sleep
To the rhythm of the war drums

    Stay with me
    Safe and ignorant
    Just stay with me

  • Maynard Keenan has always stressed paying more attention to the emotions the music brings out in you then what the lyrics actually say. The songs of A Perfect Circle are open for individual interpretations, which the band encourages.
  • This song could be a stab at the War on Terror. The first 2 lines seem to be from the point of view of the President of the US, the line "Go back to sleep," is very closely linked to a bit by comedian Bill Hicks, who lead singer Maynard Keenan is a fan of. It's basically saying, don't look at what's actually going on, just let the government tell you what's really happening.
"Lay your head down child, I won't let the boogeyman come" - Seems a reference to how the media tries to keep us scared, with orange level terrorism alerts and whatnot, but that our government is somehow in control and can protect us at all times.
"Pay no mind to the rabble" - Could be about war protesters or anyone in general who has spoken out against the Bush administration and been labeled traitors.
The next bit could mean something about giving the government more power, letting them make choices for you to keep you safe and ignorant. Rather, to keep certain people safe from being impeached or thrown out of office.Next, we have him sort of repeating a few earlier ideas, about how we should just let this war go on while bodies pile up, just so long as we don't really figure out why we are at war in the first place.
"Head down, go to sleep" - It seems this song is about the current administration keeping the ignorant masses unaware of what's really happening, much the same way they use reverse psychology to make the public think certain bills, laws and acts, like the clean air act, are doing any good at all, while doing irreparable harm to our environment or standing in the world's view. This ignorance has long been a topic that Maynard has sung about. (thanks, Bill - Topeka, KS)
  • The song can be viewed as being about 2 bodies - a controlling, maybe obsessive body and a weaker body. It can be related to the relationships between god and the world, father and son, government and society, or drugs and the user. The relationship that seems to be the most relevant however seems to be drugs and the user - the whole album seems to be based around drug addiction. (thanks, Emily-Jane - perth, WA)
  • The "New World Order" that is referenced in this song is what some conspiracy theorists and political analysts call a modern globalization organization which consists of political leaders, media tycoons, leaders of business and industry from around the world. (thanks, aaron - zanesville, OH)

    [Chorus:]
    My name is Luka
I live on the second floor
    I live upstairs from you
Yes I think you've seen me before
If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble, some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was [Repeat x 3]

    I think it's because I'm clumsy
I try not to talk too loud
    Maybe it's because I'm crazy
I try not to act too proud
They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why
You just don't argue anymore [Repeat x 3]

    Yes I think I'm okay
I walked into the door again
Well, if you ask that's what I'll say
And it's not your business anyway
I guess I'd like to be alone
    With nothing broken, nothing thrown
Just don't ask me how I am [Repeat x 3]

    [Chorus]

    I think it's because I'm clumsy
I try not to talk too loud
    Maybe it's because I'm crazy

    Luka
  • This song is about child abuse. It tells the story of a frightened boy who is forbidden to talk about what he's going through.
  • On a 1987 Swedish television special, Vega said: "A few years ago, I used to see this group of children playing in from of my building, and there was one of them, whose name was Luka, who seemed a little bit distinctive from the other children. I always remembered his name, and I always remembered his face, and I didn't know much about him, but he just seemed set apart from these other children that I would see playing. And his character is what I based the song Luka on. In the song, the boy Luka is an abused child - In real life I don't think he was. I think he was just different."
  • Speaking with SongTalk magazine, Vega explained that she started with the title for this song. Describing how she wrote it, she said: "It takes months of kind of fingering it in my mind, while I'm walking around or doing something else, it's just like a problem that my mind goes back to. It wiggles. It's like you're trying to get the right angle, and once the angle comes, I can write the song in two hours. Like 'Luka' took two hours. It took months of thinking about it and lining up the shot, in a sense. Like if you're playing pool and you want to clear the table, you line it all up, and then you just hit it and everything clears. It's very satisfying, but it takes months of preparation.

I wasn't sure what the character would say. I knew what the character's problem was, but I didn't know how to get the listener involved. I wanted it to be from the point of view of a person who is abused. Now the problem that that person has is that they can't say it. So how do you get the problem out if you can't say it? How do you involve the listener? Well, you introduce yourself: 'My name is Luka.' And 'I live on the second floor, I live upstairs from you,' and so therefore you're engaging the listener. 'I think you've seen me before,' so you start to listen. You're drawing the listener into this world with very simple, basic information. And it then proceeds to state the problem without ever saying what the problem is. That was my problem as a songwriter: How do I give this information without ever giving it?

It's easy to point a finger. It's easy to say, 'Child abuse must stop' and everybody knows this."
  • Vega wrote this song about three years before it was released on her second album. It was written before her debut album, but Vega said it "needed some time for it to settle into the bag of songs."
  • There is a great deal of lyrical dissonance in this song, as the stark story of child abuse contrasts with the catchy melody. Vega explained to SongTalk: "Because I was aiming at such a complex subject, I was aiming for the simplest line to get there. Simple melodies, happy chords. I felt I had to make it accessible because it was such a dark subject. So I went all out. But I also tried to write in the language of a child. So that's probably why it worked, because it is so accessible."
  • The video was directed by Michael Patterson and his wife Candace Reckinger, and it used an experimental animation technique that they popularized in the video for a-ha's "Take On Me."

    The Most Immaculate Haircut Lyrics

He's got The Most Immaculate Haircut
But with the right dye and shampoo, maybe I could too

And he's got the most desirable friendship group
But boy when you got that hairdo, they're not gonna call you

Now we got to get together and make some amends
I see the girls falling for you, oh she must adore you woah
    Woah
    Woah
    Woah

I get this feeling in my bones
Sometimes it's like my legs might fall away
A shooting pain runs down my left hand side and I
    I think of you

    Oh hush now
    Don't have a baby
Look at what you gave me
We can always grow, you know
    Oh hush now
    Don't have a baby
Look at what you gave me
    We can always grow together

I get this feeling in my bones
Sometimes it's like my legs might fall away
A shooting pain runs down my left hand side and I
    I think of you

    Oh hush now
    Don't have a baby
Look at what you gave me
We can always grow, you know
    Oh hush now
    Don't have a baby
Look at what you gave me
We can always grow, you know
    Oh hush now
    Oh hush now
    Oh hush now
    Oh hush now

    The Most Immaculate Haircut
  • This song was inspired by the New Zealand psychedelic pop musician Connan Mockasin and his pristine blonde hair. "I was born to be the drummer – then it doesn't matter what you look like," frontman Joe Mount told NME about his own thatch of untameable curls. "If only I could pull that kind of thing off, but I can't. When people have amazing haircuts and become iconic because of their hair, that defined look will see them through for their entire career."
  • Mount originally planned this to be a duet with Connan Mockasin about his hair, but the New Zealab#nder was on the wrong side of the world at the time, so the duet never happened. This left a gap in the song, which Mount filled with some pool-side noises. He explained to NME: "The splashing sound you hear is actually a very elegant dive by my girlfriend on the first family holiday we had after my son was born."
