We Don't Talk Anymore Lyrics

Used to think that life was sweet.
Used to think we were so complete.
I can't believe you'd throw it away.

Used to feel we had it made.
Used to feel we could sail away.
Can you imagine how I feel today.
Well it seems a long time ago you were the lonely one.
Now it comes to letting go you are the only one.
Do you know what you've done.

It's so funny how We Don't Talk Anymore.
It's so funny why we don't talk anymore.
But I ain't losing sleep and I ain't counting sheep.
it's so funny how we don't talk anymore.

Well it really doesn't matter to me.
I guess you're leaving was meant to be.
It's down to you now you want to be free.
Well I hope you know which way to go you're on your own again.
And don't come crying to me when you're the lonely one.
Remember what you've done.

It's so funny how we don't talk anymore.
It's so funny why we don't talk anymore
But I ain't losing sleep and I ain't counting sheep.
It's so funny how we don't talk anymore.

But I ain't losing sleep and I ain't counting sheep.
It's so funny how we don't talk.

But I ain't losing sleep and I ain't counting sheep.
It's so funny how we don't talk.

We Don't Talk Anymore
  • This was written by Alan Tarney, who wrote several other Cliff Richard hits including "My Pretty One" in 1987 and its follow up "Some People."
  • Cliff Richard was born Harry Webb in Lucknow, India of British parents. He joined the Dick Teague Skiffle group in 1957, leaving in 1958 with drummer Terry Smart to form Harry Webb & the Drifters and later in the year he was renamed Cliff Richard. He auditioned for the producer Norrie Paramour (who sadly died while this was at the top of the charts) in August 1958 and signed with EMI, releasing his debut single "Move It," which rose to #2 in the UK charts. His backing group in 1958 featured Hank Marvin, Bruce Welch, Ian Samwell and Terry Smart. The Drifters renamed themselves The Shadows in 1959 to avoid confusion with the US R&B act of the same name. He went on to become Britain's most successful home-grown solo act, with 13 #1s and appearances with Band Aid 2 and The Young Ones on other #1 hits. When "Saviours Day" hit #1 in the UK in 1990 he became the first artist to have #1s in the UK in 5 consecutive decades and he nearly made it six as "Millennium Prayer" was #1 in December 1999. In 1995 he received a knighthood.
  • In the mid-1960s, Richard became a Christian and since then he has recorded a number of inspirational albums. He is arguably the most well known Christian in the British music business and every December he releases a Christmas-themed single, which rarely fails to reach the UK Top 20.
  • Alan Tarney (from 1000 UK #1 Hits
  • by Jon Kutner and Spencer Leigh): '"If you play C,F and G7, you would normally expect to return to C, but I chose to leave it unresolved and go somewhere else. There's a lot of that in We Don't Talk Anymore and it keeps the suspense going. Cliff lost his place at the end, but he is such a brilliant improviser that he kept going. When he sings the bit about losing sleep, he doesn't know where he is."
  • This was Cliff Richard's biggest selling hit worldwide. He was a sensation in Great Britain, but never made a major impact in the United States. This was released when his career in America was at its peak.

    Rhymin & Stealin Lyrics

Because mutiny on the bounty's what we're all about
I'm gonna board your ship and turn it on out
No soft sucker with a parrot on his shoulder
'Cause I'm bad gettin' bolder, cold getting colder
Terrorizing suckers on the seven seas
And if you've got beef, you'll get capped in the knees
We got sixteen men on a dead man's chest
And I shot those suckers and I'll shoot the rest

Most illingest be-boy - I got that feeling
'Cause I am most ill and I'm rhymin' and stealin'

Snatching gold chains, vicking pieces of eight
I got your money and your honey and the fly name plate
We got wenches on the benches, and bitties with titties
Housing all girlies from city to city
One for all and all for one
Taking out M.C.'s with a big shotgun
All for one and one for all
Because the Beastie Boys have gone A.W.O.L.
Friggin' in the riggin' and cuttin' your throat
Big biting suckers getting thrown in the moat
We got maidens and wenches, man they're on the ace
Captain Bly is gonna die when we break his face

Most illingest be-boy, I got that feeling
'Cause I am most ill and I'm rhymin' and stealin'

Ali Baba and the forty thieves
Ali Baba and the forty thieves
Ali Baba and the forty thieves
Ali Baba and the forty thieves
Ali Baba and the forty thieves
Ali Baba and the forty thieves
Ali Baba and the forty thieves
Ali Baba and the forty thieves

Torching and crackin' and rhymin' and stealin'
Robbin' and raping, busting two in the ceiling
I'm wheeling', I'm dealin', I'm drinking, not thinking
Never cower, never shower, and I'm always stinking
Yo ho ho and a bottom glass boat
And when my girlie shakes her hips, she sure gets funky
Skirt chasing, free basing, killing every village
We drink and rob and rhyme and pillage

Most illingest be-boy, I got that feeling
'Cause I am most ill and I'm rhymin' and stealin'

I've been drinking my rum, a def son of a gun
I fought the law and I cold won
Black Beard's weak, Moby Dick's on the tick
'Cause I pull out the jammy and squeeze off six
My pistol is loaded, I shot Betty Crocker
Deliver Colonel Sanders down to Davey Jones' locker
Rhymin' and stealin' in a drunken state
And I'll be rockin' my rhymes all the way to Hell's gate

Most illingest b-boy, I got that feeling
I am most ill and I'm rhymin' and stealin'
Most illingest b-boy, I got that feeling
I am most ill and I'm rhymin' and stealin'
Most illingest b-boy, I got that feeling
'Cause I am most ill and I'm rhymin' and stealin'
Most dillingest b-boy, I got that feeling
I am most ill and I'm rhymin' and stealin'
    Most chillingest b-boy,
I am most ill and I'm rhymin' and stealin'
    Most chillingest b-boy,
I am most ill and I'm rhymin' and stealin'

Most dustin' out b-boy, I'm tossin' my dust
Most finkinest b-boy, I'm doin' that finkin'
Most rhyminest b-boy, I'm stretchin' my shade
    Most shootinest b-boy, I think you're shit

Most rhyminest b-boy, I'll steal your shit homeboy
Most taxinest b-boy, I'll tax you boy
    Most illingest illingest illingest b-boy
    Taxin' all y'all squares, yeah!

    Rhymin & Stealin
  • Beastie Boys opened their Licensed to Ill album with this track, which samples John Bonham's drum introduction from Led Zeppelin's "When The Levee Breaks." Producer Rick Rubin had previously explored the crossover between Rock and Hip-Hop in his work with Run–D.M.C., most famously with the cover of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way"."

"Rhymin & Stealin" also samples Black Sabbath's "Sweet Leaf" and The Clash version of "I Fought The Law."
  • Beastie Boys were the first artists to sample the drums on "When The Levee Breaks," but many others have gone on to do so, including Björk on "Army Of Me," Eminem on "Kim," Enigma on "Return To Innocence" and Sophie B. Hawkins on "Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover." The Beasties returned to the Zeppelin tune again for their 1989 Paul's Boutique track, "B-Boy Bouillabaisse."
  • The group didn't have a sampler when they recorded Licensed to Ill, so getting the Led Zeppelin sample required recording it to a reel-to-reel tape machine and looping it.
  • Like many of their songs, this one finds the Beasties rapping about a life of crime, with plenty of historical references along the way. Ali Baba, Captain Bly and Davey Jones all get a mention, and fittingly considering the John Bonham drum sample, so does Moby Dick.

    Point Of No Return Lyrics

Common love, seems just like a dream
    It's no mystery to me
Fill me within when we're together
    Oh baby can't you see
I'd like to feel the passion
To the Point Of No Return
I will be in full reaction
I want to take you in my arms
You're taking me to the point of no return
    (Uh uh)
You're taking me to the point of no return
It's so long, life of denial
The love you give to me
    And when you smile
It warms my heart and me
    Oh baby can't you see
I like to feel the passion to the point of no return
Oh baby, I will be in full reaction
I want to take you in my arms
You're taking me to the point of no return
You're taking me to the point of no return

I want to be with you baby
I want to be by your side
I want to be with you baby
I want to love you every evening

You're taking me to the point of no return
You're taking me to the point of no return
You're taking me to the point of no return
You're taking me to the point of no return

    Point Of No Return
  • In 1984, Miami-based producer/songwriter Lewis A. Martinee formed an all-female pop-dance trio called Exposé. He hired Aléjandra Lorenzo, Sandra Casanas, and Laurie Miller to be in the group. In 1985, three women recorded this song (with Lorenzo singing lead) which became a club-dance hit. The next year, they released another dance single entitled "Exposed to Love" (also with Lorenzo on lead), and then attracted attention of Arista Records. Just before the group began work on an album for Arista, Martineé replaced all three members with Jeanette Jurado, Gioia Bruno, and Ann Curless. Shortly after the release of their debut album Exposure and a new single in early 1987, the new lineup of Exposé recorded and released a version of this with Jurado on lead; it was the second version of "Point of No Return" that became a national hit, reaching US #5.
  • While the first few thousand copies of Exposure contained the original version of this song, the rest had the version recorded by the new lineup of Expose.

    Everyone-everyone knows
    It's, me

    And if I Recover
    Will you be my comfort?
    Or it can be over
Or we can just leave it here
    So pick any number
    Choose any color
    I've got the answer
    Open the envelope

I'll give you one more chance
To say we can change or part ways
And you take what you need
    And you don't need me

I'll give you one more chance
To say we can change our old ways
And you take what you need
And you know you don't need me

    Blow by blow
Honest in every way I know
    You appear
To face a decision I know you fear

    And if I recover

  • This slice of Synth-Pop finds Lauren Mayberry trying to figure out a relationship that is hanging in the balance as she desperately urges her companion to love her or leave her. She croons:

    "Carved.
    Earth.
    Cold
Hiding from you in this skin.
    So.
    Old."

The song was originally the title track of Chvrches debut EP. It was subsequently released as the second single from the Scottish trio's first studio album The Bones of What You Believe peaking at #91 on the UK Singles Chart.
  • Mayberry told Coup De Main magazine how the Chvrches trio pen their songs. "It's a three-part writing process - everyone's equally involved in all the writing," she explained. "Normally we'll start with a sample or a drumbeat, or a synth sound or something like that, and that will spark the initial idea. And then we'll write an instrumental sketch of a song, and then we put on a nonsense vocal melody, which is always my favourite bit because it obviously sounds amazing. Then the lyrics go on last, at the end."

  • This bombastic, horn-heavy celebratory number was first previewed as an instrumental in a short trailer for Drake's Nothing Was the Same album. Drizzy's DJ also shared a snippet with fans during the rapper's October 2013 Would You Like a Tour? stop in Brooklyn. The song didn't make the final cut for the record as the Toronto MC couldn't finish it in time, but he eventually made the tune available on December 29th. Speaking with Jian Ghomenshi on Canada's CBC Radio about Nothing Was The Same, Drake said that rather than recording a huge amount of tracks, only to slowly whittle them down, he takes the opposite approach. "I'm not a guy that does 40 songs for a project and picks 13 of them," said the Toronto MC. "If I'm gonna go as far as to track over a beat, I usually have the utmost faith in it that it'll end up somewhere."

"I don't really dispose of too many songs," Drake added. "I have stuff that didn't make this album definitely, but I don't have 20 or 30 of them — I have four or five records that just didn't make it because I was trying to keep it concise and whatever I end up doing with those, I'll do with them."
  • Chauncey "Hit-Boy" Hollis (Kanye West and Jay-Z's "Niggas in Paris," Rihanna's "Watch N' Learn," Nicki Minaj's "I Am Your Leader") supplied the thunderous beat. The producer originally sent the instrumental to Childish Gambino but the rapper didn't use it so he dispatched the beat instead to Drake. Hagler and Drizzy's go-to man, Noah "40" Shebib, also have production credits.

  • P. Diddy (known as Puff Daddy at the time) produced this and sampled the music from Herb Alpert's 1979 hit "Rise," which was written by Andy Armer and Herb's nephew, Randy Badazz Alpert, who told us: "I asked Puffy, in 1996 when he first called me concerning using 'Rise' for 'Hypnotize,' why he chose the 'Rise' groove. He told me that in the summer of 1979 when he was I think 10 years old the song was a huge hit everywhere in New York and 'Rise' along with Chic's 'Good Times' were 'The Songs' that all the kids were dancing and roller skating to that summer. He had always remembered that summer and that song. When he first played the loop for Biggie, Biggie smiled and hugged him."
  • Randy Badazz Alpert: "Over the years I was approached by Ice Cube, Easy E, Vanilla Ice, and maybe another 4-5 artists to use the song and I never said yes until I heard a rough version of Biggie's recording. I was sent a cassette from Puffy and when I cranked it up I not only immediately loved it but my gut thought that this could be a #1 record once again. The original 'Rise' record climbed the chart all summer and became #1 around the end of October. Biggie's version was released and charted its first week at #2 and went to #1 the second week."
  • Biggie Smalls wrote the entire rap, including the female vocals. Alpert told us: "When I first met Biggie before they recorded 'Hypnotize' he played me a demo version with him doing the girl's part. I still have that cassette demo and it's definitely a classic piece of rap history."
  • Pam Long from the group Total sang the hook.
  • Part of Slick Rick's song "La Di Da Di" was sampled for the chorus.
  • This was released shortly before Biggie Smalls was shot to death on March 9, 1997. It hit #1 seven weeks after his death.

    Water Me Lyrics

    He pacifies
    He pacifies
    He

    Clarify our love
    Pacify
    Pacify
    Clarify our love
    (Clarify, clarify, clarify)
    Clarify
    Clarify
    Pacify our love

    Oh show
Tell me I’m the only one
    Like I didn't know

    Oh show
Tell me you’re the one that I can call
    Even if you choke

    Mmmmmh, papi pacify
    Pacify our love

Mmh, mmh, mmh, mmh, won’t you clarify
    Clarify it hurts

    Mmmmmh, papi pacify
Pacify our love, our love, love

Mmh, mmh, mmh, mmh, won’t you clarify
    Clarify it hurts

    Papi pacify
    Papi pacify

    Oh show
    Make me everything you want
    Never tell me no
    (I'll try)
Whisper you’re the one to fix it too
    Even if you won’t

    Mmmmmh, papi pacify
    Pacify our love

Mmh, mmh, mmh, mmh, won’t you clarify
    Clarify it hurts

    Mmmmmh, papi pacify
Pacify our love, our love, love
Mmh, mmh, mmh, mmh, won't you clarify
    Clarify it hurts

    Pacify our love
    Clarify it hurts

    Mmmmmh, papi pacify
Pacify our love, our love, love

Mmh, mmh, mmh, mmh, won’t you clarify
    Clarify it hurts

    Papi pacified
    Papi pacified

    Water Me
  • FKA Twigs' first single was something that she and New York producer Alejandro Arca came up with at the end of a session. She recalled to Redbull Music Academy : "It wasn't a particularly successful session up until that point. We were making these beats and I was whisper-rapping over some stuff, and it all felt a bit empty. We had half-an-hour left at the end, and we started playing together. I was on the Tempest, doing some drums. And Alejandro started adding some synths. The Tempest has this great function where you can record something straight into it and start manipulating it. Very quickly the words came to me, out of nowhere. I'm not going to lie and say I laboured over it for ages. I think I wrote it in about seven minutes."

"It's really emotional," Twigs added with a laugh. "We were really emotional in the studio on that day, I remember. Two emo little souls, together. That's very unlike us. Usually in the studio it's... it's ridiculous. We'll work for an hour and then put on some Janet Jackson and dance around the room. Then we'll put on some merengue tune and tango through the studio. We work very quickly. Technically, he's so fast, which really suits me. I don't like to labour over things. In my experience, the first idea is usually the best one. And once I start to think about it, it implodes on itself."

Keep It Close To Me Lyrics

    I want rock'n'roll
But, I don't want to deal with the hassle.
I know what I know but,
I don't want to feel like an asshole
    It's direct, suspect,
    Insects have launched an invasion.
    Chosen, frozen,
    Poison in my vaccination, yeah.
I'm gonna figure out what's mine
And Keep It Close To Me.

    [Chorus]
    Keep it close to me.
    Keep it close to me.
    Keep it close to me.
    It's supposed to be, yeah.
    It's supposed to be, yeah.

    I've got rock'n'roll
And it used to deliver me sweetly.
    I'm not gullible but,
I feel like I've lost it completely.
    It's direct, suspect,
    Insects have launched an invasion.
    Chosen, frozen,
    Poison in my vaccination,
Yeah. I'm gonna figure out what's mine
And keep it close to me.

    [Chorus]

Let's make the most of it right now.
Let's make the most of what we've got,
God only knows where it came from.
Let's make the most of it right now.
Why is it hard to imagine
Making life worth the distraction from now on?

I'm gonna figure out what's mine
And keep it close to me.

    [Chorus]

    Keep It Close To Me
  • John Davis wrote this song as an anthem of backlash on what modern Pop music has become. The line, "Insects have launched an invasion" refers to the invasion of manufactured Pop divas such as Britney Spears.
  • The album was produced and engineered by Nick Raskulinecz, who is a good friend to the band. He went on to produce The Foo Fighters and Velvet Revolver.
  • The band recorded this album under stress of their former label Elektra breathing down their necks to write a 'summer-hit' much like their 1996 song "Sucked Out." Singer/songwriter John Davis was fed up with the lack of creative control and demanded to be severed from the label. Throughout the album you can hear the angst and disgust of what he feels the modern music world has become.

    The Call Lyrics

    The Call
  • This song draws on a rough patch Brooks went though with Trisha Yearwood before he married her in 2005. "It's about that point in a relationship when you make the decision whether what you have is worth fighting for, or is it just easier to call it 'friends' and live life from there," he told Country Aircheck.
  • The recording is a stark live acoustic performance from Brooks' show at the Wynn Las Vegas, which features Yearwood. "We tried cutting this song with a full band, but kept going back to the Wynn performance, where it's just like two people talking to each other," he noted. "The echo-type piece in this is something I haven't seen since 'Mockingbird' with James Taylor and Carly Simon. I love how unique this song sounds, and when you bring it down to just two voices and a guitar, the conversation happens."

    Shuck And Jive Lyrics

    The fascination
    Disconnection
    Far-out disengage
    Everything is meaningless
    Let's atom-bomb the stage
    Destination violation
    Far-out disrespect
    Liberation
    Transformation

    What did you expect
    What did you expect
    Mr Candidate-Elect
    Was it everything you planned
By a palm tree in the sand
    The information from the station
    Lulled you off to sleep
    Everything is heavy
And the figures are too steep
    Destination
    Laceration

    You'll survive the wreck
    Institutionalization
    What did you expect
    What did you expect
    I'm afraid you're incorrect
And you're breaking up the band
By a palm tree in the sand
    Coming down in recovery
    We fail to understand
    Wait around for discovery
    With Merchandising plans
    So take the dive
    We are Shuck And Jive

    Shuck And Jive
  • The song embodies the line, "By a palm tree in the sand," which is a wink to "California Girls" from The Beach Boys, one of lead singer John Davis's favorite bands.
  • This was featured in the 1999 film She's All That in a scene where Freddie Prinze Jr is playing soccer. However, there was no soundtrack to that film sold.

    Party Weekend Lyrics

I said, a-hey, little girl, what do you do?
I've been a-waiting all week for something like you
Because it's Friday night, and everybody's in the streets
I say, come on, come on, come on with me
    Hey

    It's a Party Weekend
Gonna be some rock and rollin'
    Everybody's gonna get you
    It's a party, a party, party weekend

    It's a party, it's a party, party
    It's a party, a party, party weekend
    It's a party, it's a party, party
    It's a party, a party, party weekend

I go here, I go there
Wherever it is, I'm gonna get my share
Because I got three days, I got three nights
Ain't nothin' gonna stop my appetite
    Hey

    It's a party weekend
Gonna be some rock and rollin'
    Everybody's gonna get you
    It's a party, a party, party weekend

    Hey

    Party Weekend
  • Joe "King" Carrasco wrote this song with the Crowns' bass player, Brad Kizer. The song is about looking forward to a fun-filled weekend, which is exactly what they were doing when they got the idea. In our interview with Carrasco , he explained that they were hanging out on Guadalupe Street in Austin, Texas when the inspiration struck. "It was a Friday night and I said, 'Brad, it looks like a party weekend,'" Carrasco said. "I went, 'Wow, that's a good song title.'"
  • Featuring Vox and Farfisa organs played by Kris Cummings, this song is a musical throwback to the organ-heavy dance songs of the '60s. The song Carrasco was trying to duplicate was "A Double Shot (Of My Baby's Love)" by The Swingin' Medallions. "Let's Dance" by Chris Montez was also an influence.
  • When MTV went on the air in 1981, they were desperate for fun videos by American artists, and the "Party Weekend" clip fit their criteria. The video was shot on South Padre Island in Texas when the band was there for a spring break performance. It was shot on the cheap by the sister of the band's manager, who captured the band and various spring breakers having a good time - exactly what the song is about.

The best we can tell, the clip marks the first appearance of crowd surfing in a music video, as we see Carrasco do a daring leap into the audience and go for a ride.
  • MTV would sometimes have artists customize songs for them, and they had Carrasco record this as "Party Christmas" for a 1982 Christmas video featuring the MTV staff.
