Cassie's Brother Lyrics

Cassie's Brother
  • This song is about Steve Gaines. His sister, Cassie Gaines, was a back-up singer in Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1975. Both died in the plane crash on October 20, 1977 that also killed lead singer Ronnie Van Zant. Cassie Gaines kept telling the band that they should give her brother Steve a chance to play. They finally decided to let him play during one show. The band told the sound people that if Steve didn't sound good enough to just turn him off. The sound people never turned him off and the band was very impressed. A few days later, Steve Gaines was invited to join the band.
  • Steve Gaines is the only other member of Lynyrd Skynyrd (other than Ronnie Van Zant) to write lyrics and sing during a recording session. Prior to playing with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Steve Gaines' band was playing motels and lounge bars.

    Heaven Lyrics

    I fought for you
The hardest, it made me the strongest
    So tell me your secrets
I just can't stand to see you leaving

But Heaven couldn't wait for you
No heaven couldn't wait for you
    Heaven couldn't wait for you
No heaven couldn't wait for you
    So go on, go home

    We laughed at the darkness
So scared that we lost it
    We stood on the ceilings
You showed me love was all you needed

    Heaven couldn't wait for you
    Heaven couldn't wait for you
    Heaven couldn't wait for you
No heaven couldn't wait for you
No heaven couldn't wait for you, no

    Heaven couldn't wait for you
No heaven couldn't wait for you, oh
    Heaven couldn't wait for you
    So go on, go home

  • This mournful piano ballad finds Beyoncé detailing someone taken from her too soon and letting go off her lost love. Many fans believe it refers to the miscarriage the singer suffered several years before the birth of her daughter Blue Ivy in January 2012.
  • Beyoncé produced the song with a Pop mysterion known as Boots who signed to Jay Z's record label Roc Nation around June 1, 2013. Boots revealed on his Facebook page on the day Beyoncé was released that he produced 85% of the album and contributed four original songs. This song was originally on his SoundCloud page under the title of "Heaven Couldn't Wait."
  • Beyoncé ends the song by singing the shortened version of the Lord's Prayer in Spanish. It translates as:

"Our father, which art in heaven
    Hallowed be thy name
    Thy kingdom come
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven

    Amen."
  • Here are three more songs on our database that contain The Lord's Prayer:

"The Lord's Prayer" by Sister Janet Mead
    "Millennium Prayer" by Cliff Richard
    "Controversy" by Prince.

    We Still In This Bitch
  • This song finds B.o.B thugging hard as he responds to his haters, telling them they can't shut him down. The track is believed by some to be a response to all those who opposed Obama being re-elected to his second term in office.
  • B,O.B's fellow Southern rappers T.I. and Juicy J jump in with a verse each where they outline their success in the game and brag about their luxury cars.
  • The song initially appeared on B.o.B's ninth mixtape, F--k 'Em We Ball, which was released on November 15, 2012. It was later dropped on January 8, 2013 as the first single from Underground Luxury, climbing to #64 on the Hot 100.
  • B.O.B. explained to Rolling Stone the meaning of his album title: "To me, 'underground luxury' is kinda like a contrasting title and the reason for that is because on this album I plan on introducing to people and reintroducing to people the side of me that they didn't see on the first album," he said. "On that album, I didn't really show my underground side and I didn't really tell my story as much and as vividly as I'm telling it now."

"Telling a story isn't always a linear thing that involves going from point A to point B -- it's about putting myself back in a mind state to when I was struggling and when I had to really go out of my way to make ends meet when I was coming out of high school and really struggling," B.O.B added. "It's really like a retelling of the story from a different perspective."

    Holiday Lyrics

Hear the sound of the falling rain
Coming down like an Armageddon flame (hey!)
    A shame
The ones who died without a name

Hear the dogs howlin' out of key
To a hymn called faith and misery (hey!)
And bleed, the company lost the war today

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
    On Holiday

Hear the drum pounding out of time
Another protester has crossed the line (hey!)
To find, the money's on the other side

Can I get another Amen (Amen!)
There's a flag wrapped around a score of men (hey!)
A gag, A plastic bag on a monument

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
    On holiday

"The representative from California has the floor"

Sieg Heil to the president gasman
    Bombs away is your punishment
    Pulverize the Eiffel towers
    Who criticize your government
Bang bang goes the broken glass and
Kill all the fags that don't agree
    Trials by fire setting fire
Is not a way that's meant for me
    Just cause
    Just cause
    Because we're outlaws yeah!

I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives

This is the dawning of the rest of our lives
This is our lives on Holiday

  • This is about the American government and society during the Iraqi War. It begins by commenting on how the thousands of dead Americans and Iraqis are nameless to the average American citizen. The song expresses resentment with the corporate greed and corruption involved in the "rebuilding" effort, and shows how the average protester realizes that the pro-war money involved has more power than they can ever have. It also points out the irony of the Christian right-wing feeling religiously justified in this war: "Can I get another 'Amen'? There's a flag wrapped around the score of men."
  • This follows the story on the album. Jesus of Suburbia has just left town and he's living his life on the streets ("Hear the sound of the falling rain..."). He's speaking out loud and acting in vain, but it seems like he's talking himself into believing that running away was the right thing to do, explaining his reasons of discontent to himself. He still feels alone, and shunned from society, but it seems he feels a little more self-confidence and happiness out on the road. It's Jesus of Suburbia yelling out and expressing his own dead beliefs onto the world. Like screaming into mid air.
  • To go "On Holiday" is to go on vacation. So this is basically like an escape, a runaway. This leads us into Boulevard Of Broken Dreams
  • This is often considered an anti-American song, but on Green Day's Bullet In A Bible DVD, Armstrong says, "This song is not anti-American, its anti-war."
  • Billie Joe Armstrong told Q magazine May 2009 that sometimes he doesn't know where he gets his songs from. For instance, when he found himself singing "Sieg Heil to the president gas man" on this number, he freaked himself out. He said: "It was kind of like, Where the f--- is this coming from? It was taking an ugly picture and painting it uglier. The thing that justifies it is that it was true."
  • While the song is a dig at conservative agendas, it doesn't entirely spare liberals. Armstrong told MTV: "I am anti-war, so a lot of [the album] has to do with that, and there's different sides of it too. Like, there's one line that sort of messes with liberals a little too, where it says, 'Hear the drum pounding out of time/ Another protester has crossed the line/ To find the money's on the other side.'"

He continues. "That song ['Holiday'] is about this mishmash of people with all these strong opinions who really can't agree, and leaving [decisions] to the person who's sort of standing in the middle confused and overwhelmed."

    Pamela, Pamela Lyrics

    Pamela, Pamela
    Remember the days
    Of inkwells and apples
    And books and school plays
Where little Brer Rabbit kissed Pooh in the wood
And Fluff was the cat that sat on the rug
    Oh, Pamela
    I remember so well

When Laurel and Hardy were shown at the flicks
With sticky red lollies on splintery sticks
Pigtails and ribbons and crushes on miss
Secret discussions about a first kiss
    But you were young
    And everything was new
Impatient to do things you couldn't do
    Oh, Pamela, Pamela
    You started to grow
Answers to questions you wanted to know

When the rest of your childhood
    Forgets as a dream
    And the harshness of life
    Dims those peaches and cream

When Laurel and Hardy were shown at the flicks
With sticky red lollies on splintery sticks
Pigtails and ribbons and crushes on miss
Secret discussions about a first kiss
    But you were young
    And everything was new

  • This early Graham Gouldman composition was recorded by Wayne Fontana. Backed by "Something Keeps Calling Me Back," it was Fontana's last hit.

Graham Gouldman was born in 1946, and although Laurel & Hardy made their last film appearance in 1951, it is unlikely Gouldman intended the line alluding to them to be taken literally ("When Laurel & Hardy were shown at the flicks...). Rather, this is a song about nostalgia, what for some people may truly be the happiest days of their lives - schooldays - but only for some. A parallel can be found in the epic song "Love Chronicles" in which Al Stewart recalls the first time he ever kissed a girl, in his kindergarten arithmetic class.

    The Ballad Of Jayne Lyrics

    She was always something special
Diamond shining bright in the rain
    Everybody dreams of angels
    No one would ever know
How much I love you so

Now it all seems funny, kinda like a dream
Things ain't always what they seem
What a shame, what happened to Jayne

You were always on my mind
Shine like a summer day in the sun
    Slowly wishes turn to sadness
Time don't heal a broken gun
I wish I never let you go
Even now I just want you to know

That it all seems funny, kinda like a dream
Things ain't always what they seem
What a shame, what happened to Jayne

Now she's breakin' hearts in heaven
    Shinin' bright in the sky
I still hear her voice in the wind
I still think of you in the night, oh yeah
Well I guess you'll never know
How much I need her so

Now it all seems funny, kinda like a dream
Things ain't always what they seem
What a shame, what a shame
    What happened to Jayne

Now it all seems funny, kinda like a dream

    Football Season Is Over
  • The band's vocalist and lyricist, Oli Sykes, doesn't like football. The song's name comes from legendary gonzo journalist and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas author Hunter S Thompson. It was actually the title of his 2005 suicide note.
  • This features vocals by JJ Peters, the singer of Australian hardcore band Deez Nuts. Oli Sykes recalled to Kerrang!: "We all love that he is on that song, but we originally wanted Andrew W.K. to sing it. The lyrics, 'Party 'til you pass out. Drink 'til you're dead' was so like something he would sing, but we never got round to asking him."

"When we played the Warped Tour in 2010, we befriended him, and it did come out and sing it a couple of times, which is pretty sweet. Everytime I think about that song I think about him now."
  • Oli Sykes told Kerrang!: "It didn't take long to write – I wrote all the lyrics while we were actually in the studio in Sweden recording it. The lyrics are just about partying and being lads, it's not too much of a serious song – and it was written and recorded when I was drunk, which you can probably tell."

Put a Little Love in Your Heart
  • She is best known as a singer, but Jackie DeShannon is one of the most talented tunesmiths of her time - she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010. She wrote many of her own songs, including this one, which she composed with her younger brother Randy Myers (Jackie's real name is Sharon Lee Myers) and a Soul singer at her label (Liberty Records), Jimmy Holiday.

In our interview with Jackie DeShannon , she told the story: "My brother Randy was playing this little riff and I said, 'Gee, I really like that riff, that's great.' All of a sudden, 'Think of your fellow man, lend him a helping hand, put a little love in your heart,' came just like that. I owe some of that to my mom, because she was always saying that people should put a little love in their heart when things are not so good. I'd like to say it was very difficult, but it was one of those songs you wait a lifetime to write."

Jimmy Holiday's contribution came after Jackie and her brother started composing it, as he helped polish the song. Holiday, DeShannon and Myers went on to write Jackie's hits "Love Will Find A Way" (#40, 1969) and "Brighton Hill" (#82, 1970).
  • DeShannon recorded a demo of this song which she had a hard time beating in the recording session. In our interview, she recalled struggling to get the right feel. "After about eight hours we finally got it and I just felt that I had done probably one of my best vocals ever," she said. "But when I came back in to hear it somehow my vocal was erased. Somebody must have hit something. I called my mom and I said, 'You know what, I'm just heartbroken. I've probably done the best vocal ever - at least it felt to me that it was right on the button - and I have to go do it again.' So I went right back in there fast, before I lost the muse. When I got to hear the new vocal I felt that, of course, I wished I could have had the other one. But who's to say? Maybe this was the better vocal."
  • The song was released as the first single from the album in June of 1969, and it gained momentum when a radio station in Atlanta started playing it. In August, the New York radio station WABC made it a "Pick of the Week," and stations around the country jumped on it, sending the song to its peak chart position of #4 on August 30. Said DeShannon: "The airplay was great, and in those days if you had a record in rotation, that could be very good money. I was actually able to buy a car for my dad, and I bought a house for my parents."
  • 19 years after this song was a hit for Jackie DeShannon, Annie Lennox and Al Green covered it for the 1988 film Scrooged. Their version reached #9 in the US and #28 in the UK and reached the Top 40 in five other countries.

    Sand In My Shoes Lyrics

Two weeks away feels like the whole world should have changed,
But I'm home now, and things still look the same.
I think I'll leave it 'til tomorrow to unpack,
Try to forget for one night that I'm back in my flat.
On the road where the cars never stop going through the night,
To a life where I can't watch the sun set.
    I don't have time.
    I don't have time.

I've still got Sand In My Shoes,
And I can't shake the thought of you.
I should get on, forget you.
But why would I want to?
    I know we said goodbye,
Anything else would have been confused.
But I want to see you again.

Tomorrow's back to work and down to sanity,
Should run a bath and then clear up the mess i made before i left here.
Try to remind myself that i was happy here,
Before I knew that I could get on a plane and fly away,
From the road where the cars never stop going through the night,
To a life where I can watch the sun set,
    And take my time.
    Take all my time.

I've still got sand in my shoes,
And I can't shake the thought of you.
I should get on, forget you.
But why would I want to?
    I know we said goodbye,
Anything else would have been confused.
But I want to see you again.

    Two weeks away,
    All it takes,
To change and turn me around,
    I've fallen.
    I walked away,
    And never said,
That I wanted to see you,
    Again.

I've still got sand in my shoes,
And I can't shake the thought of you.
I should get on, forget you.
But why would I want to?
    I know we said goodbye,
Anything else would have been confused.
But I want to see you again.

I've still got sand in my shoes,
And I can't shake the thought of you.
I should get on, forget you.
But why would I want to?
    I know we said goodbye,
Anything else would have been confused.
But I want to see you again.

  • Dido wrote this song with San Francisco songwriter Rick Nowels, with whom she previously collaborated with on the transatlantic hit, "White Flag."
  • This finds the singer reminiscing about a romantic encounter she had on holiday, having returned to the drudgery of everyday life. Dido commented to Canada.com : "A classic holiday romance song — that feeling where you go away, have this amazing time, feel like you've gone away forever and then you get back and nothing's changed and you're trying to recreate that feeling when you're back at home."

    Love is the only transportation
    To where there;s communications
If you're ready come go with me
    The boat is after
    The ever here to there
No wars will ever be declared
    No economical exploitation
    No political domination
    Take your evil
    Come go with me
    Genocide
    Get ready
    Troublemaker
    You better get ready now
    Liars
    I'm waiting on ya

If You're Ready (Come Go With Me)
  • This was written by Raymond Jackson, Carl Hampton and Homer Banks, who were songwriters for Stax Records in Memphis, where many Soul artists like Otis Redding recorded. They were about to go to their favorite lunch spot, the Four Way Grill, when Jackson called out, "If you're ready, come go with me." They started working on a song based on that phrase, and had it finished by lunch time the next day.

    The Bleeding Lyrics

I remember when all the games began
    Remember every little lie
    And every last goodbye
Promises you broke, words you choked on
And I never walked away its still a mystery to me

    Well I'm so empty
I'm better off without you and you're better off without me
    Well you're so unclean
I'm better off without you and you're better off without me

    The lying
    The Bleeding
The screaming, was tearing me apart
    The hatred
    Deceiving
    The bleeding
    It's over

Paint the mirrors black (to forget you)
I still picture your face and the way you used to taste
Roses in a glass dead and wilted
To you this all was nothing,
    Everything to you is nothing

    Well you're so filthy
I'm better off without you and you're better off without me
    Well I'm so ugly
You're better off without me and I'm better off without

    The lying
    The bleeding
The screaming, was tearing me apart
    The hatred
    The beatings
    Disaster
    It's over

As wicked as you are, you're beautiful to me
You're the darkest burning star, your my perfect disease

    The lying
    The bleeding
The screaming, was tearing me apart
    The hatred
    The beatings
    It's over
    Disaster

    The lying
    The bleeding
The screaming, was tearing me apart
    The hatred
    The beatings
    It's over
    Disaster
    It's over now

    The Bleeding
  • The lead single from Five Finger Death Punch's debut album, this was originally included on the band's first EP, Pre-Emptive Strike along with an acoustic version. The track peaked at #9 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.
  • When Ivan Moody auditioned to be the vocalist for Five Finger, this was the song he was asked to sing. So chronically shy was Moody, he had to perform with his back turned to the rest of the band.
  • The Bradley Scott-directed video was shot in Los Angeles on July 7–8, 2007. The clip features scream queen actress Danielle Harris, best known for her roles in the Halloween series. Also appearing was writer/director Sxv'leithan Essex, who also turned up in Five Finger Death Punch's video for "Never Enough," and directed the visual for "The Way of the Fist."
  • This is about Five Finger Death Punch vocalist Ivan Moody's ex-fianceé and is also about his former band Motograter. Moody said in a Blistering interview: "That song is a two-part song and it comes across as a relationship piece, which it is. Half of it is about my ex-fianceé who meant everything to me, so once Motograter had fell apart and then her and I dwindled apart it just took a huge part of my life. So a lot of that song was about me losing that love and then having to say that it was over and move on. The other half was written about Motograter, because that was the closest thing I’ve ever had to a real family and it took a huge part of my soul."

One time, at a Five Finger Death Punch show in Arizona, the girl who inspired the song showed up. Moody spoke about it saying, "When we performed in Arizona the girl who I wrote 'The Bleeding' for was at the show and that was the first time I had seen her in about a year and I almost broke into tears because it all came rushing back to me. I’m not one of those artists that just likes to get up on stage and drink beer, when I sing a song I like to take myself and the fans back to the place where I was when I wrote that song."
