Touchdown Boy Lyrics

There's this one guy
There's no one like him
In all the world
'Cause you can always see
Those girls down on there knees
In those dark sweaty rooms
Planning out his thoughts
He's waiting for just the right

One by one as they
Walk right through
The door, they
Keep on coming back I
Guess they just want more

He has fun, fun, fun as you
Might call him a whore, but
Just look where he's at 'cause
He is the one that scores

I saw my friend there
Out on the field today
I asked him where
He's going, he said
"All the way" now

One by one as they
Walk right through
The door, they
Keep on coming back I
Guess they just want more

He has fun, fun, fun as you
Might call him a whore, but
Just look where he's at 'cause
He is the one that scores

Go

Touchdown Boy
  • This song is about that one guy at your high school/college/workplace, who gets all the girls. The singer is clearly envious of him.

Have You Seen Me Lately Lyrics

    Have You Seen Me Lately
  • When Counting Crows debut album August and Everything After took off, the group's mercurial frontman, Adam Duritz, became the focus of lots of unwanted attention. Despite his proclivity for dating actresses (Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Mary Louise Parker...), he hated the trappings of fame, as he found himself surrounded by people he found both banal and absurd. This song is about that strange trip into celebrity, and Adam is fully aware that complaining about being famous will not elicit sympathy from everyone. "It is difficult to deal with it," Adam told us . "If you're a guy who writes about what you're going through in life, then you can't not write about going through that if it happens. It was just such a weird thing to go from being a pretty shy, private person, to being on the cover of magazine stands. I wasn't really prepared for that, especially because I was already kind of unbalanced, and that really set it off"

"'Have You Seen Me Lately,' is about that," he continued. "Dealing with the relationships with people in the wake of that, how I felt about knowing whether they were real or not real, and my perceptions of my social life having exploded out across the radio."

    The Funeral Of Hearts Lyrics

    love's The Funeral Of Hearts
    an ode for cruelty
    when angels cry blood
on flowers of evil in bloom

    The funeral of hearts
    And a plea for mercy
    When love is a gun
    Separating me from you

    She was the sun
    Shining upon
The tomb of your hopes and dreams so frail
    He was the moon
    Painting you
With it's glow so vulnerable and pale

    Love's the funeral of hearts
    And an ode for cruelty
    When angels cry blood
On flowers of evil in bloom

    The funeral of hearts
    And a plea for mercy
    When love is a gun
    Separating me from you

She was the wind, carrying in
All the troubles and fears you've for years tried to forget
He was the fire, restless and wild
And you were like a moth to that flame

    The heretic seal beyond divine
A prayer to a god who's deaf and blind
The last rites for souls on fire
Three little words and a question, why?

    Love's the funeral of hearts
    And an ode for cruelty
    When angels cry blood
On flowers of evil in bloom

    The funeral of hearts
    And a plea for mercy
    When love is a gun
    Separating me from you

    The Funeral Of Hearts
  • This song was the last song to be recorded for this album, and it was written on the spot in the studio, by Ville Valo, the singer in HIM. The band didn't intend for this song to be on the album, but as HIM's bass player Mikko Paananen said: "We gotta have this song on the album, or else we're f--ked." This song was also the first single from the Love Metal album, and the first video. The single reached #1 in their home country of Finland.
  • When we spoke with Ville Valo in 2013 , the HIM singer/songwriter explained: "That wasn't originally supposed to be included on Love Metal, the album. I had the main ideas for it, but we kind of ran out of time. We already had recorded the rest of the songs, but then I had this "eureka" moment and finished up the song really quickly right at the very last week of recording the album. Everybody liked it so much that we had to reserve some more time from the studio and really work on that song.

As a band, especially a rock band, when you think in terms of albums more than songs, you tend to put all your effort into the X amount of songs. Once all that stuff is out of your system - meaning recorded and produced - then all of a sudden you feel a breath of fresh air, this sense of relief. And that time is really, really good for getting new stuff done. We've had that in the past with a few songs. We have a song called 'Gone With the Sin' on Razorblade Romance that happened exactly the same way."

    I Wish I Was a Girl Lyrics

    The devil's in the dreaming
He tells you I'm not sleeping in my hotel room alone
    With nothing to believe in
You dive into the traffic rising up
    And it's so quiet
    You're surprised
    And then you wake

For all the things you're losing
You might as well resign yourself to try and make a change
    I'm going down to Hollywood
They're gonna make a movie from the things that they find
    crawling round my brain

I Wish I Was a Girl so that you could believe me
And I could shake this static everytime I try to sleep
I wish for all the world that I could say,
"Hey Elizabeth, you know, I'm doing alright these days."

    The devil's in the dreaming
You see yourself descending from a building to the ground
    You watch the sky receding
You spin to see the traffic rising up
    And it's so quiet
    You're surprised
    And then you wake

For all the things I'm losing
I might as well resign myself to try and make a change
But I'm going down to Hollywood
They're gonna make a movie from the things that they find
    crawling round my brain

I wish I was a girl so that you could believe me
And I could shake this static every time I try to sleep
I wish for all the world that I could say,
"Hey Elizabeth, you know, I'm doing alright these days."

In one of these dreams, you forgive me
It makes me think of the bad decisions that keep you at home
How could anyone else have changed?
All these wrong conclusions that leave you alone
    How could everyone rearrange?
How could everyone else have changed?
    What I see I believe

For all the things I'm losing
I might as well resign myself to try and make a change
Well, I'm going down to Hollywood
They're gonna make a movie from the things that they find
    crawling around my brain

I wish I was a girl so that you could believe me
And I could shake this static everytime I try to sleep
I wish for all the world that I could say,
"Hey Elizabeth, you know, I'm doing alright these days."

    I Wish I Was a Girl
  • A band composition with lyrics by lead singer Adam Duritz , this song is about the same girl he sang about on their 1993 song "Goodnight Elisabeth." Her real name is Betsy, and Duritz dated her before he was famous. When the band took off and he went on tour, she feared he was cheating on her, and this song assures her that he wasn't. The song finds Duritz wishing he was a girl so that he could be a trusted friend who could convince her that he was faithful.

    Rico Suave Lyrics

Seguro que han oído que yo soy educado
Soy un caballerito un chico bien portado
Un joven responsible why siempre bien vestido
Yo no se quien ha mentido

I don't drink or smoke ain't into dope
Won't try no coke, ask me how I do it, I cope
My only addiction has to do with the female species
I eat 'em raw like sushi

No me gustan ternos, mi estilo es moderno
Si me enterno, you me enfermo
Mi apariencia es dura, vivo en la locura
    No me vengan con ternuras

So please don't judge a book by its cover
There's more to being a latin lover
You got to know how to deal with a woman
    That won't let go
The price you pay for being a gigolo

There's not a woman that can handle
    A man like me
That's why I juggle two or three
I ain't one to commit, you can omit that bit
You pop the question that's it
Haber uno, dos, tres, cuatro mujeres
Why la situació allí no muere
No es un delito calmo mi apetito
Con un llanto o un grito

So again don't let my lyrics mislead you
I don't love you but I need you
Would you rather have me lie
Take a piece of your pie and say bye
Or be honest and rub your thighs

Well, it's ten o'clock and I'm two hours late
I never said I was a prompt date
But you kept persisting that I meet your parents
Huh, they're going to love my appearance

    Ding dong el timbre suena
Tu madre abre, que vieja mas buena
Le digo ¡Hola! Pero no para bola
Que se ha creido vieja chola

Go and serve the food mom
    Que tengo ambre
If you don't hurry, me va a dar un calambre
Why usted señor? Why's your chin on the floor?
    Sierra la boca por favor

What's this amor, these little huevos?
Esto sí que yo no pruebo

I'm used to good ol' fashioned
    Homestyle Spanish cooking
If I try that I'll be puking
Well it's been a pleasure but we got to go
    Regresaremos temprano
Cinco, seis, o siete de la mañana
Su hija esta en buenas manos

    Rico Suave
  • This was the first pop hit that was sung in "Spanglish," a combination of Spanish and English. In later years, as Latin dance music became more popular, artists like Ricky Martin often crossed languages with their songs.
  • Roughly translated, "Rico Suave" means "Tasty and Smooth." Since the title also sounds like a name, many people thought Rico Suave was the name of the singer. This became a joke on MTV, as comedian Paulie Shore would refer to Gerardo as "Rico."
  • The "Latin Lover" portrayed in this song was a character. Gerardo (last name: Mejia) was a one-hit wonder, but he has also been a successful actor and record executive. His movie credits include Colors and the Songfacts favorite "Can't Buy Me Love." As a record executive with EMI, he helped sign Enrique Iglesias in 1998.
  • Gerardo's real-life father played his girlfriend's father in the video. (Thanks to Ed Pearce for his help with this. Ed is author of Food for Thought: Extraordinary Little Chronicles of the World , where you can learn that Mexican food was popularized in the US by a Los Angeles restaurant: the El Cholo Spanish cafe which opened at 1121 South Western Avenue in a courtyard with a mission-style fountain in 1930. The Proprietress Rosa Borquez's menu included food such as enchiladas and tacos. Another popular item they sold was the burrito, meaning literally "little burro or donkey", which originated south of Los Angeles.)
  • Weird Al Yankovic recorded a parody of this called "Taco Grande," which describes a visit to a Mexican restaurant and features a short Spanish monologue by the comedian Cheech Marin. The parody was re-recorded by Tim Buppert for the Disney film Ratatouille: What's Cooking?.

    Hard Headed Woman Lyrics

    Well a Hard Headed Woman,
    A soft hearted man
    Been the cause of trouble
    Ever since the world began.
Oh yeah, ever since the world began
    A hard headed woman been
A thorn in the side of man.

    Now Adam told to Eve,
    "Listen here to me,
Don't you let me catch you
    Messing round that apple tree."
Oh yeah, ever since the world began
    A hard headed woman been
A thorn in the side of man.

    Now Samson told Delilah
    Loud and clear,
    "Keep your cotton picking fingers
    Out my curly hair."
Oh yeah, ever since the world began
    A hard headed woman been
A thorn in the side of man.

    I heard about a king
    Who was doing swell
    Till he started playing
    With that evil Jezebel.
Oh yeah, ever since the world began
A hard headed woman been a thorn in the side of man.

    I got a woman,
    A head like a rock.
    If she ever went away
    I'd cry around the clock.
Oh yeah, ever since the world began
    A hard headed woman been
A thorn in the side of man.

    Hard Headed Woman
  • "A hard headed woman's been a thorn in the side of a man."

This song finds Elvis using famous biblical figures to back up his assertion about uppity women: Adam and Samson kept a firm hand with Eve and Delilah, but Jezebel led the more lenient King Ahab astray.

It's all very tongue-in-cheek, of course: Elvis was always respectful and appreciative of the women in his life.
  • "Hard Headed Woman" was recorded on the RCA label backed by "Don't Ask Me Why," and written by the black songwriter Claude Demetrius; it was his biggest hit, although Mr. Presley went on to even bigger an greater things.

Demetrius also co-wrote the similarly themed Fats Domino song "Ain't That Just Like A Woman" and another hit for Presley: "I Was The One."
  • This short song, running to less than 2 minutes, was a #1 hit for Elvis Presley in his native USA, but in 1958 it was banned from airplay in the UK by that self-appointed guardian of public morals the BBC. The Beeb's Puritanical attitude over such matters is why it became known as Auntie.
  • Deep Purple fans may recognize this as one of several songs from this era alluded to in their song "Speed King."
  • Songwriters Bob Carlisle and Randy Thomas took inspiration from this, but flipped the genders, for Dolly Parton's 1989 hit single "Why'd You Come in Here Lookin' Like That." That song's line, "I'm a softhearted woman, he's a hardheaded man" is an inversion of the line, "Well a hard headed woman, a soft hearted man."
  • Like Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl ," this is another famous track that drops the hyphen from its compound adjective (it should be "Hard-Headed Woman"). Check out other Songs with Bad Grammar in the Title .

    Judy in Disguise (with Glasses)
  • This was a parody of "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds," which The Beatles released a year earlier. Instead of the psychedelic sound of the Beatles song, this was bubblegum pop, but with similarly obtuse lyrics. According to John Fred, John Lennon loved the song. Said Fred: "When I met John Lennon, that's the first thing he asked me. He thought it was great. He said the first thing he was going to do when he got home was write a song called 'Froggy in a Pond with Spectacles.'"
  • John Fred Gourrier was a star baseball and basketball player for Southeastern Louisiana University, where he went on scholarship. This was his only hit, but he did have some popular, non-parody songs in Louisiana with titles like "Up and Down," and "She Shot a Hole in My Soul." His song "Shirley" also did well locally, and was a #6 hit in the UK for Shakin' Stevens in 1982.

Following "Judy In Disguise (with Glasses)," Fred got a deal with UNI records, who also signed the unknown talents Neil Diamond and Elton John. His follow-up song was "Hey, Hey Bunny," which failed to chart. With the label putting most of their efforts into Elton John, Fred's career stalled. He worked for a record company for a while, in the early '80s returned to music, once again touring the south. He died on April 15, 2005 at age 63 due to complications from a kidney transplant.
  • John Fred came up with this song when he was touring southern states in 1967 behind his minor hit "Agnes English." He explained to One Shot magazine that he was looking for material for a follow up song when he found inspiration in the crowd. Said Fred: "We were playing in Florida and the girls at the time had these big old sunglasses. One of the guys was hustling this chick. She took off these glasses and she could stop a clock. I said, 'That's it.' That's what gave me the idea. I said, 'She's kind of in disguise.'"
  • At first, the girl in this song was named Beverly, but Fred changed it to Judy because it was much easier to sing and went along with the "Lucy" from the song he was parodying.
  • The lyric, "Cross your heart with a living bra" was very strange, but this was a strange song. Fred was writing lyrics while watching TV, and he cribbed the line from a Playtex commercial.
  • This song was also recorded by Tommy Roe.
  • Not everybody appreciated the fact that it was a parody. The comedian Dickie Henderson (1922-85) used it in his stand up routines, quoting the lyrics to ridicule '60s popular music. His favorite lines were: "Lemonade pie with a brand new car" and "Cross your heart with your living bra."

    Outskirts Lyrics

Here on the Outskirts of life
    Dreams seldom come true
    Flippin' through photographs emotional holographs
Cutouts of all the figures you might've been
Reflections of a life that you once lived

    As the evening descends
    Your conscious of every breath
And every moment is a crisis, I guess
Starin' out the windows of your hotel room
You lit one too many fires underneath that spoon
Well I guess you deserve the chosen few
Real life, just out of view

    Well that's just here,
    On the outskirts
    Yea, that's here,
On the outskirts of your life

    And there's a picture we've all seen
It was taken in the lobby of the L.A. Ambassador Hotel
It's the silhouette of a man in another's arms
So turn off your TVs, and let that train go home
'Cause everyone warned you that California
Wasn't goin' to be the end
California wasn't gonna be the end.

And tell me where can you hide when
The whole world is ugly and strange
Yea tell me where you gonna turn when
This whole world knows your name

    Sucker love is heaven sent
You pucker up our passion's spent
My hearts a tart your body's rent
My body's broken yours is bent

Carve your name into my arm
Instead of stressed I lie here charmed
Cause there's nothing else to do
    Every me and every you

Sucker love a box I choose
No other box I choose to use
    Another love I would abuse
    No circumstances could excuse

In the shape of things to come
    Too much poison come undone
Cause there's nothing else to do
    Every me and every you
    Every me and every you
    Every me

Sucker love is known to swing
Prone to cling and waste these things
    Pucker up for heavens sake
There's never been so much at stake

I serve my head up on a plate
    It's only comfort, calling late
Cause there's nothing else to do
    Every me and every you
    Every me and every you
    Every me,

    Every me and every you
    Every me

Like the naked leads the blind
    I know I'm selfish, I'm unkind
    Sucker love I always find
Someone to bruise and leave behind

All alone in space and time
There's nothing here but what here's mine
    Something borrowed, something blue

The Peace Of The Roses Lyrics

    The Peace Of The Roses
  • This was written shortly after the birth of Arthur, Prince of Wales, and appears in a song book from the court of his father, Henry VII (1457-1509). Henry was the first of the Tudors, ascending to the throne on the death of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth in August 1485, the last significant battle in what was known as the Wars of the Roses. The head of the House of Lancaster, on January 18, 1486, he married Elizabeth York cementing an alliance between the House of Lancaster and the House of York. On September 20, 1486, their first son, Arthur, was born at Winchester - as in Winchester Cathedral. Winchester is also the legendary seat of Camelot, and Arthur was named after its equally legendary king.

"The Peace Of The Roses" acknowledges this alliance:

"I love the Rose both Red and White
Is that your pure perfect appetite?
To hear talk of them is my delight,
    Joyed may we be
    Our Prince to see
    In Roses three".

In other words, the Red Rose of Lancaster unites with the White Rose of York to form the Tudor Rose.

Alas, that was as good as things got for the House of Tudor. On November 14, 1501, Arthur was married to Catherine of Aragon - who was barely a year older - but died April 2 the following year aged only 15. In 1509, Arthur's brother Henry married his widow, the first of his six wives. After divorcing Catherine he married Anne Boleyn, and when like Catherine she was unable to give him the son and heir he wanted, he chopped off her head, which was obviously bad news for her, but Anne's execution did inspire one of the most memorable dark songs of the 1930s, "With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm."
