Moriarty's Last Stand Lyrics

Moriarty's Last Stand
  • In our 2013 interview with lead singer Jon Fratelli , we asked him if the titular Moriarty referred to Sherlock Holmes' arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty or Dean Moriarty, a central character in Jack Kerouac's 1957 semi-autobiographical novel On the Road. His reply: "I've forgotten... probably Dean Moriarty, which is funny as I'm not a fan of that book!"
  • The parallels in the lyrics certainly suggest that Fratelli, along with other songwriters like Bob Dylan and Al Stewart, was influenced by Kerouac and his most famous novel. The book focuses on the hedonistic adventures of a group of friends and their sexual conquests. The song seemingly echoes the book's bisexual themes, particularly when the persona tells a girl that she "makes me want to gnaw on a bone and my jaw is in very much need of attention," which serves as innuendo for fellatio. Likewise the song makes reference to parties and subsequent disillusionment, other major themes of the novel.
  • This appears as a track on the deluxe edition of the band's second album, which turned out to be their last before a 5-year break. Jon Fratelli says that the challenges of constant touring took their toll on the band, leading to a breakup.
  • Moriarty's is also the name of a bar in Jon Fratelli's hometown of Cumbernauld.

    Best Imitation Of Myself Lyrics

I feel like a quote out of context
    Withholding the rest
So I can be for you what you want to see
I got the gesture and sound
    Got the timing down
It's uncanny, yeah, you think it was me
Do you think I should take a class
    To lose my Southern accent
Did I make me up, or make the face till it stuck
I do the Best Imitation Of Myself

    The 'problem with you' speech
    You gave me was fine
I liked the theories about my little stage
And I swore I was listening
    But I started drifting
Around the part about me acting my age
Now if it's all the same
    I've people to entertain
    I juggle one-handed
    Do some magic tricks and
    The best imitation of myself

Maybe I'm thinking myself in a hole
Wondering, who I am when I ought to know
Straighten up now time to go
Fool somebody else, fool somebody else

Last night I was east with them
    And west within
Trying to be for you what you want to see
But I can't help it with you
The good and bad comes through
Don't want you hanging out with
    No one but me
Now if it's all the same
It comes from the same place
And if my mind's somewhere else
You won't be able to tell
I do the best imitation of myself
    Yes it's uncanny to see
You'd really think it was me
    The best imitation of myself
Do the best imitation of myself

    Bremelo Lyrics

Here's a gory kind a story about a ole be freak
    With a forty-inch waist and a ten-inch beak
Overweight and out a shape with a triple chin
Her brassiere strike fear in the hearts of men

    The girl's a Bremelo
    The girl's a Bremelo

Me and Terry hoped the ferry we were lookin' suave
When I dip, hit the shift we were almost horse
It was a big Bremelo standin' on my toe
Had an over jelly belly tryin' to say hello
I was really kind a frightened as she looked my way
I tried to run because her buns made the ferry sway
To be blunt she was fat and ready for combat
All the way to Bremerton were the fat is at

    The girl's a Bremelo
    Let's go

I love bacon over steak and about those big ole ducks
She had hairy underarms and a whopping gut
My hair was short and wavy, drove my pit bull crazy
A Bremerton beast chasin' fellas in the Navy
After movie she's the feature, the Bremerton creature
You wear a life jacket if you ever try to freak her
Look at her physique she ain't my kinda freak
The floor creaks when the beast starts reachin' her peak

    The girl's a Bremelo
    Just a Bremelo
    Change the beat!

You can't ignore the way she snores, cause she blows down doors
Baby's got the kind a face only a mother adores
A big basketball head with a 10-inch beak
Big lips, no hips with the smell of a beast
I couldn't put her in my Caddy or my tranny would break
I heard a dirt because of poverty, but she took my cake
When it comes to cool-Aid the girl would drink it in pints
You go to school for twenty years and your still in the ninth?

    You're just a Bremelo
    Just a Bremelo

    You pink triple-chin unattractive duck
Your boyfriend beats freaks up to make a buck
Hangin' round third and Pike, on a ten-speed bike
You can say that I'm a liar, but you know I'm right
You talk behind my back, because I dropped you flat
And you never take a shower 'cause your too damn fat
So your man was smart when he broke your heart
Because if Mix-A-Lot a cut ya, you a fell apart
Wearin' polyester slacks, with elastic in the back
You could flatten Schwarzenegger in a wrestling match
You got lips like a character in some cartoon
With a pink posterior, you big baboon

    Your just a

Now Bremerton's a city right outside of mine
Most girls there are ducks, but a few are fine
But the ones that I speak about
Used their face for catchin' trout
    Vacuum clears for a mouth
You know what I'm talkin' about
Mud ducks, hockey pucks, drivers of Mack trucks
Lame brains, diesel trains, pick 'em up you have to strain
Big butt, crew cut, extraordinary gut
Big momma, kinda buff, facial hairs a kinda rough

Duck, duck, duck, duck, duck, duck, duck, duck
    Girl's a Bremelo
    Duck, duck, duck, duck, duck
    The girl's a Bremelo
Duck, duck, duck, duck, duck, duck, duck, duck

I am the one you left for dead
    (Say you wanted to)
You are the bullet in my head
    (Ah)
And as you stand over my grave
    (Tell me it's okay)
You'll pause the lips upon my face
    (Ah)

Either I'm in heaven, or I'm in hell
Am I losing my mind, yeah
    (Cause I can't tell)
I've been waiting for answers for way too long
    Seems I'm always waiting around

Spiders in my head, spiders in my mind
You may take my eyes, but baby I'm not blind
It all works out all right
You know I'm gonna be all right
You may take my eyes, but baby I'm not blind

I think your mother wants me dead
    (Say you wanted to)
    I am a schizophrenic man
    (Ah)
    I wouldn't change you if I could
    (Say you wanted to)
Treat me good I'll play it cool

Spiders in my head, spiders in my mind
You may take my eyes, but baby I'm not blind
It all works out all right

    Spiderhead
  • This song opens Cage The Elephant's third album Melophobia with a wash of David Bowie influenced fuzz-tone guitar. Axeman Brad Shultz told MusicRadar.com : "I wasn't being influenced during the writing or recording of 'Spiderhead.' Matt (Shultz, vocals) has been getting into Bowie, so that could be there maybe, although I can't speak for him. As for myself, I just wanted to write a riff that I really loved. But that was the hardest thing – trying to dream up that one thing that I could be honestly excited about."
  • Melophobia is the hatred or fear of music, and the album was titled thus as the whole process was riddled with adversity and growing pains. This was one of the songs that the band struggled to complete. Brad Shultz told MusicRadar: "We probably wrote four different choruses for this one; we just didn't want to settle. We didn't want to assume that the first thing was always the right thing. I never want to say that we took the easy way out on this record."

"If you've ever had that feeling where you had to convince yourself that something is the right thing," he continued, "then you know it's not the right thing. It's hard to come to that realization, too. As an artist, you want to love everything that you do. But there's a fine line between loving something and convincing yourself to love it."

Take It or Leave It Lyrics

Baby you should know by now that I'm right, for you.
But every time I step to you, you change your tune.
Sweet wheel of death keeps us holding our breathe.
I step to the right, you move to the left.
    Unless no one else.
    I'd rather die to myself.

Oh why, won't you make up your mind?
    I think I must confess.
    I'm starting to unwind.
    I been trippin' over you.
    So tell me something new.
    Take It or Leave It.

Maybe I should pack my things and move on?
Maybe I'm foolin' myself and you're already gone?
Watching the flames wither and fade.
Trying to make sense of the look on your face.
    I'm down, I'm an itch.
Just playin' that I can hold on.

Oh why, won't you make up your mind?
    I think I must confess.
    I'm learning to unwind.
    I've been trippin' over you.
    So tell me something new.
    Take it or leave it.

    Baby please.
    Oh baby please.
Stay with me or cut me free.
    Its all of me.
Oh why, wont you make up your mind?
    I think I must confess.
    I'm starting to unwind.
    I been trippin' over you.

    Take It or Leave It
  • Vocalist Matt Shultz told the story of this song to MusicRadar.com : "We have a rehearsal cabin in Portland, Tennessee, which if you know anything about Portland, Tennessee, you know that only about 10 people live there," he said. "One day, the band was in the cabin, and Brad started playing this little guitar thing. Pretty soon, Jared started playing drums to it. Everyone jumped in and the song started to happen. It was one of those 'light-bulb' moments."

"We put together the verse, but the chorus didn't want to come to us," Shultz continued. "That was always a big problem with the song. We cut the track in the studio, but there was still no chorus. After a while, we started to get really down in the dumps, because at first this was the most promising song of all, and now it was just sitting there."

"One morning, I woke up in my living room, he concluded. "I picked up the guitar and the whole thing poured out. I literally sped down to Nashville to get to the studio to show it to the guys. We jumped right in and recorded it that day. Sometimes these things happen when they're gonna happen, and you just have to be patient."
  • The song's music video is set in a roller dancing contest. "I came up with the idea after seeing American Hustle," Shultz told Radio.com . "I just really liked the aesthetic, that kind of '70s disco, macho kind of thing. The video's kinda like Saturday Night Fever meets Skatetown USA, Patrick Swayze's first movie."

Shultz added, "We're like the backing band to this roller skating disco competition and the skaters that we got were amazing. Everything looked really authentic. It was awesome."

Look out for a surprise appearance from actress and and singer Juliette Lewis before the roller dancing begins.

I Walk The Line Revisited Lyrics

I'm back on board that '49 Ford in 1956
Long before the sun came up way out in the sticks
The headlight showed a two rut roadway, back up in the pines
First time I heard Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

I got my thrill behind the wheel upon my daddy?s lap
Grandpa rode co-pilot with a flashlight and a map
Cane pole out the window it was in the summertime
First time I heard Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line

I never will forget that day, I know the time and place
Sounded like the whole thing came right down from outer space
I still can see those headlights and that dashboard in my mind
The first time I heard Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day's through
Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine, I walk the line

All these long years later it's still music to my ears
I swear it sounds as good right now as anything I hear
I've seen the Mona Lisa, I've heard Shakespeare read real fine
Just like hearing Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've know proves that it's right
Because you're mine, I walk the line

Standing there with your red coat on
    French perfume looking vulnerable
Black Widow girl you sit and wait
Till I climb into the web you made

    I'm an animal,
    You got me losing control
    You got me losing control
    You got me losing control
    It's not right

I can't take it no more girl
    I can't take this abuse
Every time that you walk in the room girl
I'm hypnotized by the way that you move
It's the way that you move

You call me out at your beck and call
Set me up just to watch me fall
Twist and turn bend and sway
I move in then you push away

I'm an animal you got me losing control
You got me losing control you got me losing control
    It's not right

I can't take it no more girl

    Black Widow
  • This dance party tune finds Matt Shultz singing about a wicked girl. The black widow is a venomous American spider, which is black with red markings. The way the female black widow spiders lure males and mates them before eating them is a frequently used lyrical metaphor for women who are dishonest about their intentions. Here are some other examples:

"Die for Me Only (Black Widow)" by Lita Ford : "Plays with a vengeance. Controls our very soul. To weave you in my web of love. And never let you go."

"Black Widow" by Bruce Dickinson. "Black Widow And here, my prize, the Black Widow: Isn't she lovely? And so deadly. Her kiss is fifteen times more poisonous than the rattlesnake."

"Werewolf Women of the SS" by Rob Zombie: "They are the black widows, baby. Off the streets of Berlin. Pure wolf is the mission. She-Devils of sin. They're in control now. Strasser you are."

"There Goes" by Alan Jackson: "Like some big black widow spider. You know just how to catch your prey. I'm actin' like it doesn't matter. And you sneak up from behind and whisper my name."

"Gold Dust Woman" by Fleetwood Mac: "Pale shadow of a woman. Black widow. Pale shadow. She's a dragon. Gold dust woman."
  • Matt Shultz and his guitarist brother Brad disagreed about the use of horns on this song. Brad told MusicRadar.com : "I have a thing about brass, so I've wanted to have horns for a while. Matt is on the other side of that; he was never a big horn fan at all. We definitely have different opinions on that subject. This was one of the songs that led to our big argument. He just didn't share the vision I had for the horns. When we did it and it worked out, it turned out to be a really pleasant surprise."

Like the pine trees lining the winding road
    I Got A Name, I got a name
Like the singing bird and the croaking toad
    I got a name, I got a name
And I carry it with me like my daddy did
But I'm living the dream that he kept hid

Moving me down the highway, rolling me down the highway
Moving ahead so life won't pass me by

Like the north wind whistlin' down the sky
    I got a song, I got a song
Like the whippoorwill and the baby's cry
    I got a song, I got a song
And I carry it with me and I sing it loud
If it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud

Moving me down the highway, rolling me down the highway
Moving ahead so life won't pass me by

And I'm gonna go there free

Like the fool I am and I'll always be
    I got a dream, I got a dream
They can change their minds but they can't change me
    I got a dream, I got a dream
Oh, I know I could share it if you'd want me to
If you're goin' my way, I'll go with you

Movin' me down the highway, rollin' me down the highway

    I Got A Name
  • This was the theme song for the 1973 movie The Last American Hero starring Jeff Bridges as a stock car racer. The movie is based on the true story of the stock car driver Junior Johnson.
  • This is a rare song that Croce recorded but did not write. Ingrid Croce, who was married to Jim from 1966 until his death in 1973, told us: "It was written by Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox. And they were wonderful guys, really nice people. Jim had been selected to sing this song for this particular movie. He really enjoyed this opportunity, because he went into the recording studio and it was a little awkward for him not to hold his guitar - his guitar is kind of like a bar for the bartender, having that prop between him and the audience was just a real security, it made him feel very comfortable. So putting down the guitar to sing, just to sing the song in the studio, was a very unusual thing for Jim, and he thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a brand new start for him in some ways, to use his vocals in a different way. I think it's one of the most powerful songs he does on that album for sure. I loved it."
  • Explaining how this song was a good fit for her husband, Ingrid says: "More people think he wrote that song. His voice was so unique... the timbre in his tone and his warmth and his generosity, everything came through that voice. So when he took a song, he'd make it his own, and I think he did a great job with 'I've Got A Name.' So many people like to think of Jim with that song that I hate to tell them it isn't his." (Read more in Ingrid Croce's Songfacts interview, and at Croces.com .)
  • The album was produced by Terry Cashman and Tommy West, who had a hit as Cashman & West with "American City Suite." Says Cashman: "We recorded it because Jim was going to get a lot of money to record the song, and if it was released as a single, it would be the main title of a movie called The Last American Hero. So it wasn't a song that Jim wrote on the guitar with Maury [Muehleisen]. Tommy and Jimmy and Maury and myself came up with the arrangement together. It was a different kind of animal. We did that song with just the tracks for us, and then recorded Jim's voice over it, which is the way most people did records in those days. But most people think that Jim wrote that song because it sounds like the other songs, and then the production of course is a little bit more elaborate. It was different in that way, but Maury has a big guitar part and it certainly sounded like one of his records. And it became one of his most popular records. You know, a lot of people have covered that song, and it's been used in a number of other movies." (from our interview with Terry Cashman)
  • This was the last song Croce played before his death. He performed it as an encore at show in Natchitoches, Louisiana at Northwestern College. The crowd was small, as many folks stayed home to watch the Billie Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match that night. Croce's plane, taking off in the dark after the concert, clipped a tree and crashed, killing all six people on board.
  • Quentin Tarantino used this song in his 2012 film Django Unchained. The film is set in 1858, but features some modern music, including cuts by Rick Ross and John Legend. The song was used in a scene were Django (Jamie Foxx) has been freed.

Other films that have used the song include The Ice Storm (1997) and Invincible (2006).
  • Lena Horne sang this in 1976 on the first season of The Muppet Show. Horne's appearance earned the show a great deal of credibility, making it easier for the show's producers to find guests willing to perform with puppets.

It's driving me crazy, it's driving me mad

I wish I were an astronaut

Locked me up and threw away the key

Hey, hey, hey, hey, are you into the beat?

    Teeth
  • Vocalist Matt Shulz explained the song's meaning to MusicRadar.com : "The song is about feeling the energy of music changing," he said. "There's a real exciting scene going on in Nashville with a bunch of bands. It carries a familiar nostalgic sentiment, but at the same time everybody's trying to do something different. So 'Teeth' is about the vibrancy of life and how things are changing."

"There's this overwhelming need that some people have," he continued, "they want to cater to cool or feed a certain image; either that or they try to write to sound artistic or intellectual. What's best is when you're transparent, standing there naked and just pouring your heart out. This song is like a letter to myself, telling myself that it's OK to be honest."
  • Shultz's lyrics were inspired by the Hanna-Barbera cartoon lion, Snagglepuss. He told Music Radar: "The character had this cool posture that I wanted to take on in my vocal delivery."
  • The spoken-word part that happens at the end of the song came about after Matt Shultz talked to some friends about the creative process. He explained: "I was talking about writing lyrics just to sound poetic rather than speaking from your heart. My friend said that I should stop writing lyrics for the sake of poetry, and I should just write lyrics the way that I speak, because that's what's poetic."

"At first, I was kind of offended," he continued, "but he was right. I did this experiment where I had my friends come over, and we'd crack open a bottle of wine and sit down with a typewriter. I told them to just speak from their hearts, and I tell you, I felt like a therapist – they would be weeping in my living room. Those words came out of that experiment. I'd pull lines from the things that they told me, various phrases that I'd embellish. It was pretty powerful."

    Heartland Lyrics

When you hear twin fiddles and a steel guitar
You're listenin' to the sound of the American heart
And opry music on a Saturday night
Brings a smile to your face and a tear to your eye

    [Chorus: x2]
Sing a song about the Heartland
The only place I feel at home
Sing about the way a good man
    Works until the daylight's gone
Sing the rain on the roof on a summer night
Where they still know wrong from right
Sing a song about the Heartland
Sing a song about my life
