The Saga Begins

This parody of Don McLean's song "American Pie" summarizes the movie Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace in five-and-a-half minutes. It goes full-geek, getting into details like the journey to Coruscant and an encounter with Anakin at Tatooine.

The song is exceptionally long, but that's part of the joke: "American Pie" was one of the longest hit songs ever recorded, running 8:33.

This song was released before Star Wars: Episode I came out in theaters. Yankovic learned plot points by going online to check out spoilers for the movie.

George Lucas was OK with this, and happy to get the Weird Al treatment, as it built anticipation for the film.

Don McLean was pleased with the parody and even told Al that his lyrics sometimes enter his mind during concerts. Most of Al's fans had no knowledge of McLean's song from 1971, but the year after "The Saga Begins" was released, Madonna did a Dance cover of "American Pie." Many listeners wondered by Madonna was remixing a Weird Al song.

Aura

This thumping dance song finds Gaga singing about fame and adoration as she asks the listeners if they want to "see the girl who lives behind the aura." The aura is a term used within Islam, which denotes the intimate parts of the body that must be covered with clothing.

Gaga uses the Islamic traditions that women should cover their bodies in public as a metaphor for life as a celebrity. The Mother Monster is saying that it is her choice to well the veil of fame in order to retain an aura of mystery.

The growling, exotic tune track was produced by Russian-German producer and DJ Zedd. He is best known for his single "Clarity," as well as co-producing Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj's hit tune "Beauty And A Beat." Zedd first linked up with Lady when his remix of her "Marry the Night" track appeared on the special edition of Born This Way. "I think 'Aura' [is] one of the most interesting and unique electronic songs ever, honestly," Zedd commented to MTV News. "It's so crossing over to, you know, there's so many guitars and it's like an oriental vibe. And there's a hard electronic drop and kind of a minimal drop in the end. I don't how to describe it, it's kind of cool."

The song's lyric video was directed by Robert Rodriguez and promotes his 2013 exploitation action film Machete Kills. Gaga made her first foray into acting in the movie playing the gun-toting Lady Chameleon. The song also featured in a trailer for the flick.

Gaga made available with the ARTPOP release an app, playable on Android and iOS. The singer worked with Max Weisel of Relative Wave who also worked on Bjork's 2011 app for her Biophilia album. It includes a glowy character named Petga, who will help the user create an aura that will grow and change as they use the app more and more.

Pictures Of You

In this song, lead singer Robert Smith seems haunted by pictures of the girl he lost. Like many Cure songs, it's an emotional song about love. Many of us at one time feel the way he feels in this song.

Many of Robert Smith's compositions are inspired by literature. "Pictures Of You" was based on an essay by Myra Poleo called The Dark Power of Ritual Pictures. Smith says that after reading it, he destroyed his old personal photos and many of his home videos in an effort to wipe away his past. He came to regret the decision a few days later.

The song has been featured on US teen drama One Tree Hill and the 2012 romantic drama The Vow.

Rolling Stone magazine placed the track 278th on their 2004 list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Smith has given conflicting accounts of what events inspired the song. In other interviews he has said that the song was the result of losing pictures he carried around in his wallet, many from before he was born.

Smith explained the emotions behind the lyrics in a 1989 interview with Music Box TV: "It's about the idea you hold someone. It goes back a bit to a song like 'How Beautiful You Are.' The idea of you hold someone isn't really what that person is like. Sometimes you completely lose touch with what a person has turned into. You just want to hold onto what they were."

The Five Stairsteps were formed in Chicago in 1965 and comprised of Burke family members Clarence Jr., James, Aloha, Kenneth and Dennis. They got their name when "Momma Stairsteps" (as Betty Burke was affectionately called) noticed that her kids looked like stair steps when stood next to each other according to age.

This song of comfort and hope was written by Soul songwriter/producer Stan Vincent, who also worked with The Soul Generation and The Legionnaires.

Other artists to record this include Richie Havens, Daryl Hall and The Edwin Hawkins Singers.

Colossus

This Lousy with Sylvianbriar track was inspired by the American poet Sylvia Plath, who published a 1960 collection with the same title. Of Montreal mainman Kevin Barnes told Rolling Stone: "I had been reading a lot of her poetry when I was making this record, and she sort of haunted the album."

As well as referencing Plath's family, the song is also about the relatives of somebody in Barnes' life. It contains the rather mean lyric "Baby, your family, they are just losers." The frontman told Rolling Stone: "It's not really meant to be an insult. It's more of an observation. When you have people who have loser relatives or loser parents, they have to come to terms with that. It doesn't mean that you love them any less. Some people are just that way, and you have to deal with the repercussions of dealing with loser relatives."

This song finds McCartney exploding the mythology of the Fab Four as he has a dig at people who stereotype him as the 'soft' Beatle. He told NME it is a minor bugbear of his. "It's nothing I obsess about. But it does happen," McCartney said. "I mean, The Beatles story is actually in history classes – my grandkids say, 'You were in a book today, Grandad!' And you go, 'What! Oh no! Shame of it! So you kind of like the idea of people getting it right. For me, when people analyse it all I think, well, on the basis of what? They weren't there, they don't know, they didn't sit in the room with me and John and see who did what. They heard the stories and stuff but the truth is much more subtle. McCartney told the BBC that on the day he wrote this song, he had been reminiscing about his past in Liverpool with John Lennon: "I started to get images of us in the record shop listening to early rock and roll and looking at the posters and the joy that that gave me remembering all those moments," he said.

"So that song just evolved around that," Macca continued, "and then I found that one of the things that came was - you can't take it away from me, even though you can say 'hey this is what happened in Liverpool in the late 1950s but I'm going to say 'were you there or did you just read about it?' Because I was there and I was walking down that street - so it's that kind of song. It gets a bit of a dig at people who say they know what it was all about but they weren't there - but mainly it's just fond memories for me."

The song's music video was shot between Los Angeles; Natchez, Mississippi and Faraday Louisiana. The visual was directed by Vincent Haycock, who has worked with Calvin Harris on a number of his clips including the ones for Feel So Close" and "Sweet Nothing" and "Thinking About You."

Rather than a factual reflection on the early relationship between Paul McCartney and John Lennon, the visual pays homage to the twosome by portraying a pair of aspiring blues musicians in the 1950s American South. Haycock said: "Their story at its core is a universal one, two young kids who bond over their passion for music and form a band and friendship. This video is about them, and every band, and every kid who has suffered the ups and downs of starting a band, whether or not they became successful."

"The universality of their story was a big inspiration of setting the film in Mississippi during the 50s," he added. "This is a time period that inspired The Beatles ' American Rock and Roll and the Mississippi Delta Blues of the 50s. Early Days is about the spirit and inspiration young musicians find in each other."

The video also features a jam session between McCartney and Johnny Depp. The American actor and part-time guitarist has made quite a habit of appearing in the former Beatle's clips, having also featured in the visuals for "My Valentine" in 2012 and "Queenie Eye" in 2013

This song is about Josef Mengele (The Angel Of Death), a doctor at Aushwitz who performed gruesome experiments on prisoners during the Holocaust. Many people who don't fully understand metal or Slayer have branded them Neo-Nazis and Satanists, but the song was written by guitarist Jeff Hanneman because he has an interest in World War II. His father landed on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944.

"Angel of Death" has become one of Slayer's signature songs and a classic of the thrash metal genre. It is included in all of their live albums and band-produced DVDs. It also appears in the soundtrack to many films, including Gremlins 2, Jackass: The Movie, and the 2005 documentary Soundtrack to War.

This was one of Rick Rubin's early productions. Slayer were signed to Rubin's Def Jam label, which also had Beastie Boys (that's how Slayer guitarist Kerry King ended up doing the solo on "No Sleep Till Brooklyn"). Def Jam's output was distributed by Columbia, but they refused to issue this one, so Rubin turned to Geffen, which handled the distribution.

Rick Rubin took a different approach to producing this track in order to get a very clean sound. Since Slayer plays very fast, Rubin left the reverb off to keep it from turning to mush. He also boosted the drums, which kept the guitars at bay. He explained in Rolling Stone: "Dave Lombardo is this incredible, unbelievably great drummer. One thing that we did was make the drums louder. The nature of distorted electric guitars is that they sound loud regardless of how loud they are. Whereas drums, because it's a natural instrument, depending on how loud they are in the mix really changes that feeling of how hard they're being hit. If you're in a room with the drums and somebody's hitting them hard, they're much louder. So, psychologically, by making the drums louder, it made everything seem louder."

This song has also been covered by other metal bands, including Monstrosity, Apocalyptica, Asinesia, and the Slayer tribute band Dead Skin Mask. Slayer having headlined Ozzfest several times, "Angel of Death" is also found in compilation albums from the annual hard rock festival.

How did Slayer come to write a song about Josef Mengele, of all people? In the book Precious Metal: Decibel Presents the Stories Behind 25 Extreme Metal Masterpieces , the interview for Reign in Blood reveals that while the band was touring from their previous album, they did not yet have a tour bus, so they were just driving around in a car, with not much for amusement but paperback books they'd buy at rest stops. Jeff Hanneman ended up reading a book on the topic which sparked his interest.

In Precious Metal, Slayer co-lead guitarist Kerry King has this to say on the controversy over this song: "People get this thought in their heads - especially in Europe - and you'll never talk them out of it. They try to talk you into what they're thinking. When you ask them a question and you give them an answer they don't want, they'll be like 'Well, don't you mean...' And I'm like 'No, dude, I don't mean that.' It's just like, wake up."

A mini-essay about controversy: Why does Slayer go through life with such a target on its chest? Dozens of bands produce material that's far gorier. Almost every heavy metal band you can name pins a pentagram or 666 or other "Satanic" imagery to their album cover. Here is the Reign in Blood album cover , which is part of the reason Def Jam's distributor, Columbia Records, refused to release it - compare it to the work of Hieronymus Bosch . As for subject matter, there's a song out there which makes light of violence against women, murder, mutilation, necrophilia, and cannibalism. That song is "I Hold Your Hand in Mine ," by noted satirist Tom Lehrer. Now, where's the protests and picket groups and censorship and album-burning when it comes to Lehrer? Science needs to find out why bands like Slayer draw so much fire while others get a free pass. In the mean time, we're going to have to assume that Slayer is scary while Lehrer and Bosch are not, and so people are reacting based on raw emotions and not on any kind of logic at all.

This song finds Pusha and Rick Ross spitting out downtrodden verses whilst an uncredited Kanye West supplies background vocals. "It's hard and emotional; it's what people wanna hear... as a rap purist," Pusha told The Boombox . "It almost has the same qualities to me that 'Sixteen' with [Ross] and Andre 3000 [had]. Not that the song sounds anything like that, but just the fact that you want to hear rap. Like you just hear two guys blacking out over verses."

The sibling's 2002 debut Lord Willin' was a RIAA-certified gold record, but their two subsequent releases (Hell Hath No Fury and Til the Casket Drops) didn't fare so well. "I don't think I sold that many records," the rapper told MTV News. "My run in the music game hasn't been the average rise to success. You're right, I have sold a million records. My favorite album, I've sold no records on Hell Hath No Fury. I only got three albums, I've been in the game since 2002, it's 2013 I only got three albums with the Clipse."

The music video finds Pusha returning to the streets with Ross where they deliver their testimonial verses to a classroom full of at-risk young adults. The scene morphs into a memorial service setting, with shots of black men wearing T-shirts depicting victims of random gun violence. "The concept of 'Hold On' is me and Ross performing in front of some neighborhood guys, lecturing and basically telling the people of the neighborhood — our peers, essentially — that we' re here for them and we' re doing this for them," Push T told MTV News.

He added: "Ross is a perfect fit for any song with me, personally, because I feel like he's one of the people I could count on to give a clean, concise, immaculate verse."

I Don't Know How To Love Him

Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice wrote this for the Rock Opera Jesus Christ Superstar,. Rice and Webber discovered Yvonne Elliman, originally from Hawaii, at the "Pheasantry" folk club on Kings Road in Chelsea in 1969. They offered her the role of Mary Magdalene in the Rock Opera.

Elliman played the Magdalene role in the 1973 film version of Jesus Christ Superstar and won a Golden Globe award for her performance.

Elliman appeared in the Broadway version, where she met Bill Oakes, president of RSO Records and married him. Oakes introduced her to Eric Clapton, who asked her to sing backup vocals on "I Shot the Sheriff." She became part of Clapton's band and stayed with him for five years.

Barry Gibb and Robin Gibb of The Bee Gees wrote a couple of songs for Elliman: "Love Me," and "If I Can't Have You." She performed "If I Can't Have You" for the movie soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever, her greatest commercial success. It was Elliman's only #1 hit.
