The Four Horsemen Lyrics

The Four Horsemen
  • Dave Mustaine brought this song to the band and worked on it with James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich. At the time, they called it "The Mechanix," and included it on their 1992 demo cassette No Life 'Til Leather.

After Mustaine was fired from the band in 1983, Metallica released Kill 'Em All with a re-worked version of this song renamed "The Four Horsemen." Mustaine's new group, Megadeth, released it as "Mechanix" as the last track on their first album, Killing Is My Business....
Mustaine's version has completely different lyrics, but the music is very similar. Since the Metallica song had been out for a while, Mustaine would often introduce "Mechanix" in concert by explaining that it was a track he wrote with Metallica. (thanks, Terry - Belleville, Canada)
  • "The Four Horsemen" is a biblical reference. In The New Testament, "The Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse" go in different directions to spread the word of the end of the world. The concept of The Four Horsemen is not limited to The Bible. In 1924, a sportswriter referred to The Notre Dame football team's backfield as "The Four Horsemen," and the school had the players pose on horses with their uniforms on to publicize the team, which was coached by the legendary Knute Rockne. The photo became famous when it was picked up by wire services and the nickname stuck. For Metallica, The Four Horsemen could refer to the four members of the band.
  • Dave Mustaine claims credit for the title. A group called Gamma (led by Ronnie Montrose) has a song called
"Four Horsemen" that Mustaine played in his pre-Metallica band, Panic. He would refer to Metallica as "The Four Horsemen" and suggested they cover the Gamma song. The band never did the cover, but they did appropriate the title.
  • The bit of "Sweet Home Alabama" in the middle of the song came about after Dave Mustaine had been listening to some Lynryd Skynyrd. When the band was working on the song, Mustaine played played some of "Alabama" because, as he says, he was "being a jerk." His little joke worked, however, and the final product ended up including the bit of the Skynyrd classic.
  • James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and Dave Mustaine are the credited writers on this track. Mustaine also got credits on the Kill 'Em All tracks "Jump in the Fire," "Phantom Lord" and "Metal Militia."
  • Bruce Dickinson, lead singer of Iron Maiden, has called Metallica "the f--king bane of my life." In the Iron Maiden computer game Ed Hunter, there is a level set in Hell in which you can kill the "four horsemen." (thanks, Brett - Edmonton, Canada)
  • Metallica has a habit of cutting the song in half by skipping the jam-like solo on the bridge of the song. It wasn't until December 7, 2011, on their 30th anniversary, that they played "The Four Horsemen" from beginning to end, including the bridge solo. (thanks, Cristian - Bellflower, CA)
  • The original album title was "Metal Up Yer Ass," with artwork of an arm holding a knife coming out of a toilet bowl. They thought it might cause problems, so they toned it down to Kill 'Em All, with a bloody hammer as artwork.

Metallica - Hit The Lights Lyrics

    No life till leather
We are gonna kick some ass tonight
    We got the metal madness
    When our fans start screaming
    It's right well alright
    When we start to rock
We never want to stop again

    Hit the lights
    Hit the lights
    Hit the lights

You know our fans are insane
We are gonna blow this place away
    With volume higher
Than anything today the only way
    When we start to rock
We never want to stop again

    Hit the lights
    Hit the lights
    Hit the lights

    With all our screaming
We are gonna rip right through your brain
    We got the lethal power
It is causing you sweet pain Oh sweet pain
    When we start to rock
We never want to stop again

You lookin' better than a Scarface starter kit
All hundreds, small faces nothin’ counterfeit
You want this ghetto D? Or that over the counter shit?
Catch you slippin’ in the kitchen, on the counter shit (damn)
Oh shit (sup), I guess I’ll pause for these bitches
Guess I’ll ball for these niggas, swear this my last three swishers
On my grown man shit I’m ‘bout to kill this bitches

Baby you know I got some money
Girl, the dough ain't a problem for me
But when I look in your eyes
Baby you got everything money just can’t buy
(All the things money can’t buy)
(All the things money can’t buy)
(All the things money can’t buy)
(All the things money can’t buy)

Diamond in the back, sunroof top
Got a diamond on my lap and my sunroof off
Her mind strong but her body so soft
Tattoo on her hip read “Only for a Boss†
She ain’t impressed with the way I ball
She said “You seen one ghost, you seen ‘em all†
    Even though that thing cold
She said “A Rolls Royce or a Civic, Daddy I’mma roll with you†
She ride for me, die for me, love me, that’s how she do
I pulled up close and I tell her what’s true

Baby you know I got some money
Girl, the dough ain't a problem for me
But when I look in your eyes
Baby you got everything money just can’t buy
(All the things money can’t buy)
(All the things money can’t buy)
(All the things money can’t buy)
(All the things money can’t buy)

Shawty where you at? Meet me at the mall
Told her “Let me buy you something†, she replied “Naw†
She said her love won’t be bought
I don’t need to spend some no money, spend some time that’s all
    I told her “Daddy don’t mind spending†
I want to see you shine like the diamonds in my pendant
She told me she don’t care for the flash
Want affection not cash, girl I ain’t even mad at you
She ride for me, die for me, love me, that’s how she do
I pulled up close and I tell her what’s true

Baby you know I got some money
Girl, the dough ain't a problem for me

(All the things money can’t buy)
(All the things money can’t buy)

What’s happening with it baby? Hope you don’t think that I’m crazy
Say me and you, get us some practice makin' a baby
I will take some out the stash and buy you that new Mercedes
Then be all up in that ass in the back of that new Mercedes
You call for the protectin', yeah, send me your issues
They ain’t ‘bout to be playing with her, me and these pistols
See that thirty-six for D’Usse, I’m the provider
Come scoop me in that 458, you be the rider
(Yeah) Oh well, that’s that, back to the party
Bet you niggas anything I’m leaving here with shawty
Got a feeling that she fuckin’ with me for me
She got me feeling like I got a million on me

Baby you know I got some money

She gon' see some shit that she don't wanna see
    She ain't ready for it
If I ain't the greatest then I'm headed for it

So now I'm all in Niko's basement puttin' work in on the phones
Either that or drive to money mart to make the pickups
Man it's 2008, I'm tryna paint the picture
Comeback Season in the works and now I'm thinkin' bigger
I got 40 in the studio, every night, late night
Gotta watch that shit, don't want to make him sicker
    That's my nigga
Oh Lord, got a whole lot to show for it
I mean we can really get it, we can go for it

0 to 100, nigga, real quick
Real quick, real fuckin' quick, nigga

Whole squad on that real shit
Whole squad on that real shit
Whole squad on that real shit

The other night, Lavish Lee told me that I'm all these people listen to
She said they love me unconditional
Imagine how I feel to watch another nigga at the top
You know that if it wasn't you, you would be dissin' you, dawg
    Damn, okay, from that perspective
I see what you're talkin' 'bout, no way to soften that
'Cause me, I was tryna find out where I lost 'em at
But maybe I ain't lose 'em at all
Maybe I keep movin' forward and they're just stagnant, they ain't movin' at all
But when they need a favor, who do they call?
Maybe I'm searchin' for the problems, askin' what was said and who was involved
Too focused on people's feedback and provin' 'em wrong
They say the shoe can always fit, no matter whose foot it's on
These days feel like I'm squeezin' in 'em
Whoever wore 'em before just wasn't thinkin' big enough
I'm 'bout to leave 'em with 'em
'Cause if I run in the game in these, man the seams are splittin'
No pun intended but they're smellin' defeat in the air
Headed where nobody took it, who meetin' me there?
They tell him that he's talkin' crazy but he doesn't care
Bein' humble don't work as well as bein' aware
Listen up, boy, you're better off eavesdroppin'
We already got spring 2015 poppin'
    PND droppin', Reps-up P droppin'
Majid Jordan droppin', OB droppin', not to mention me droppin'
Feel like we paid the refs off, man we fixed the game
Me and Noel been at it before Twitter names
Yeah, been on the move like the lease is up
And I can't even name one person that's keepin' up
Damn, fuck how it was in the past tense
Ask yourself, how do we match up now?
'Cause I'm only 27 and I'm only gettin' better
If I haven't passed you yet, watch me catch up now, forreal

Could it be the way that I'll catch up

  • Drake dropped this summer jam on June 1, 2014. The head-nodding banger features six minutes of braggadocious rhymes as the Toronto MC boasts of going from 0 to 100 quickly in the rap game (associating it to a car's acceleration).
  • The song was produced by Drake's in-house collaborators Boi-1da and Noah "40" Shebib, with Paul Jefferies (aka Nineteen85).
  • The second half of the song features ethereal sampled vocals by James Blake. The pair previously partnered when the British singer/songwriter remixed Drake's "Come Thru."
  • This was the cause of a fight arising from Diddy accusing Drake of stealing Boi-1da's "0 to 100" beat. According to TMZ.com the Bad Boy founder was given the instrumental first, but he sat on the vocals, so Drizzy released the song without the hip-hop legend. Diddy confronted the Toronto MC at DJ Khaled's Miami birthday party and punched him in the shoulder, which resulted in Drake requiring hospital treatment.

    Pulling Teeth Lyrics

    I'm all busted up
    Broken bones and nasty cuts
    Accidents will happen
But this time I can't get up
She comes to check on me
Making sure I'm on my knees
    After all she's the one
Who put me in this state

    Is she ultra violent?
    Is she disturbed?
I better tell her that I love her
Before she does it all over again
    Oh God, she's killing me!!!

    For now I lie around
Hell that's all I can really do
She takes good care of me
Just keep saying my love is true

    Is she ultra violent?
    Is she disturbed?
I better tell her that I love her
Before she does it all over again
    Oh God, she's killing me!!!

Looking out my window for someone that's passing by
No one knows I'm locked in here
    All I do is cry

    For now I lie around
Hell that's all I can really do
She takes good care of me
Just keep saying my love is true

    Pulling Teeth
  • This song is a tongue-in-cheek look at an abusive relationship. Billie Joe wrote it around an inside joke the band had with bassist Mike Dirnt after he was sent to the emergency room for injuries resulting from a pillow fight with his girlfriend at the time. Around the time of Kerplunk! they were at a friends house having a pillow fight when Mike ran around a corner and hit his head on a low ceiling beam. He fell backwards and broke both of his elbows.
  • The title itself is a further play on that inside joke. Metallica had a song on their Kill 'Em All album titled "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth." Mike's girlfriend who the song is loosely based on was named Anastasia, so they kept the "Pulling Teeth" from the Metallica track for the title. Mike eventually married her in 1996 and had 1 child with her; they have since divorced.

    St. Anger
  • This song is about venting anger in a positive way. The lyrics describe how the band felt restrained in the past - having "St. Anger 'round my neck." (thanks, Anthony - Wichita, KS)
  • James Hetfield has said that this is about his fight with alcoholism. (thanks, Scott - Palm Springs, CA)
  • There are no guitar solos on the St. Anger album. (thanks, Micha - Opole, Poland)
  • In this song there are references to the places Metallica played in their early days. These venues were often really run-down places, but they have no regrets about playing them. (thanks, Karen - Dunfermline, Scotland)
  • The line, "I hit the lights on these dark sets" is a reference to the song "Hit The Lights," the first song on their first full length album, Kill 'Em All, highlighting Metallica moving into a new era after recovering from addiction and a long hiatus. (thanks, iain - edinburgh, Scotland)
  • To promote the St. Anger album, Metallica performed this live at San Quentin prison. A week later, an MTV Icons show was devoted to the band. The prison performance was the first time James Hetfield played since his stint in rehab.
  • Metallica has a tendency to place the songs that the albums are named for on track #2 of their albums. That's the case here, and also for "Ride The Lightning," "Master of Puppets" and "...And Justice For All." (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France, for above 2)
  • The line, "F--k it all and f---king no regrets," is taken straight from "Damage, Inc." on the Master of Puppets album. Another line taken from this song is, "Never happy ending on these dark sets," slightly changed to say, "Hit the lights on these dark sets." (thanks, Colin - Cooperstown, NY)

    I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel to scream
    This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there is not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please, God, wake me

Back to the world that's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I'll live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
    Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please, God, wake me

Now the world is gOne, I'm just one
    Oh God, help me
Hold my breath as I wish for death
    Oh please, God, help me

    Darkness imprisoning me
    All that I see
    Absolute horror
    I cannot live
    I cannot die
    Trapped in myself
    Body my holding cell

    Landmine has taken my sight
    Taken my speech
    Taken my hearing
    Taken my arms
    Taken my legs
    Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

  • This song is about a soldier fighting in a war and a mortar blows off in his face. He can't hear, see, smell, taste and he doesn't have arms or legs. He comes out of a coma in a hospital. During the time he is in the hospital he reflects on his life and things his father told him. Eventually the doctors get worried because he's having spasms all the time, but he doesn't seem to be dying. They call in the general and he can't figure it out either but the soldier with the general recognizes it. "Its Morse code," he says. The general asks what he is saying and the soldier looks for a minute and then says, "He is saying K-I-L-L- M-E over and over again. (thanks, Paul - Anacortes, WA)
  • The lyrics are based on the novel Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, which is about World War I. A specific passage that inspired the song is: "How could a man lose as much of himself as I have and still live? When a man buys a lottery ticket you never expect him to win because it's a million to one shot. But if he does win, you'll believe it because one in a million still leaves one. If I'd read about a guy like me in the paper I wouldn't believe it, cos it's a million to one. But a million to ONE always leaves one. I'd never expect it to happen to me because the odds of it happening are a million to one. But a million to one always leaves one. One."

James Hetfield was introduced to the book by his older half brother, David Hale, who was also in a band. (thanks Vesa - Tampere, Finland and Bertrand - Paris, France)
  • In 1971, Johnny Got His Gun was made into a movie which was directed by Trumbo. The video for the song uses images and monologues from that movie.
  • This was the first single released by the band to feature bassist Jason Newsted, who continued playing with Metallica until 2001. You have to listen very carefully to hear his playing, however, since the bass was buried in the mix.

In our 2013 interview with Jason Newsted , we asked him if he would like to see the album re-released with a more prominent low end. He replied: "There's been so much hubbub over this thing and people make so much out of it, but whatever it is that they make out of the blend of the whole thing, to me the album is perfect. Kill 'Em All isn't perfect, but it's perfect. And Van Halen I isn't perfect, but it's perfect. ...And Justice For All isn't perfect, but it's perfect. Because it captured that time for those people. Going back and re-recording albums that were already classics, I'm just not sure about all that stuff."
  • Metallica performed this at the Grammy awards in 1989. This was the first year a Grammy was awarded for Hard Rock/Metal Performance, and it went to Jethro Tull. This was a bit of a joke, since few people consider Jethro Tull to be Hard Rock or Heavy Metal. The next year, this won the award for Best Metal Performance and the year after, Metallica won again for "Stone Cold Crazy."

In 2014, Metallica once again performed "One" at the Grammy Awards, this time joined by the Chinese piano player Lang Lang.
  • Metallica guitarist James Hetfield wrote this with drummer Lars Ulrich. It is a fixture at their live shows.
  • This was included on the 1999 live album S&M, which they recorded with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra.
  • KoRn performed this on MTV Icon in 2003. (thanks, Nick - Paramus, NJ, for above 3)
  • The name of the statue with the scales on the album cover is "Doris." (thanks, Ali Sadeghi - Scottsdale, AZ)
  • Hetfield has said he lifted the intro from Venom's "Buried Alive," a song about being trapped in a casket while being buried alive, similar to the predicament of the character in this song. (thanks, Michael - North Adams, MA)
  • This was the first video Metallica made, and it expanded their fan base by giving them a presence on MTV. Many fans got mad at Metallica for selling out, but the band said it felt right. (thanks, Josh - East Longmeadow, MA)
  • Hammett told Kerrang! September 13, 2008 that this track has one of his favorite Metallica guitar solos. He explained: "Specifically, this is the middle solo of the song. Much like 'Enter Sandman' it's a solo that everybody can pretty much sing along to, and it definitely gives me a really good feeling every time I play it."
  • This song is featured in the video game Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock and is considered the second hardest song on the game. (thanks, matt - Langhorne, PA)
  • When Metallica appeared on The Howard Stern Show in September, 2013, James Hetfield explained that this was not so much an anti-war song as an observation. "War is a part of man," he explained. "We're just writing about it. It's not good or bad, it's just a thing."

Hetfield also revealed that he could relate to the character in the song because of his difficult childhood. He said that he often felt like a "prisoner in his own body," with no means to escape. His father left when he was 13, and his mother died a few years later.

This the type of car that you keep a bad bitch in

Not that I don't got good vision, but I don't see competition
They want me to come and help them but I am not a magician
I'm on them fo-fours I'm tipping, you better move out my way
I am not here to play, pinkprint can't be delayed

'Cause I Win Again, 'cause I win again, and I win again, and I win again,
And I win again, and I win again, and I win again, yeah I win again
Can't tell me nothing about it, your opinion isn't doubted
Go against me, then you made a mistake

Yo, yo, cause I came out, '09 when promoters brought wayne out
Lewinsky, like I couldn't get the stain out
I been bad, like cutting school, and staying out
I been hotter then vacationing, and laying out
I sat back, and watched how it was playing out
They diss me, but running and took the same route
Uh, but no, they not nicki, wrist on ice and yes my wrist bricky
If I leave, the game will miss nicki, not a website booking, money, this says 50
Pop bottles with my bitches and get pissy
This shit ain't got no more integrity
Don't write they raps, and plus they flow shitty
Don't make me expose you bitch, I'm too busy
Hoped on the bridge-y, New York City
Nicki still the queen, niggas already
(Hoped on the bridge-y, new york city
Nicki still the queen, niggas already)

I came in I told them that I would become the greatest
Muhammad ali, these bitches, and that can't be debated
I never chicken'd, I skated, I know they mad that I made it
All this money I made, all my bitches is laced

'Cause I win again, 'cause I win again, and I win again, and I win again,
And I win again, and I win again, and I win again, yeah I win again
Can't tell me nothing about it, your opinion isn't doubted
Go against me, then you made a mistake

So good, so real, so good, yeah
    I'm a win again, I'm a win again

I'm Meryl Streep to all these bitches, they can't do what I do
Sometimes I just look in the mirror and I be like, "why you?"
Yeah, I know that they mad, but I'm a shit on my critics some more

    I am
    I am
I am still gonna do, what he sent me to do
That's kill, kill, everything in, everything in my way,
That's kill, kill, everything in, everything in my way,

Say I Won't (why y'all scared to be different?)
Say I won't (why y'all scared to be different?)
Say I won't (we them outsiders, that's just how we live it)
    Say I won't (and I bet I will)
    Say I won't
I might do it just to show you
I might do it just to show you
I might do it just to show you
We be like la, la, la, la

From the same city as the B-I-G
Wanna serve these bars, gotta see ID
Now I'm on their radar, where it beat I be
Was a slave for the cars, then we got free
Used to only wanna pull up in a black sport
Just a white man excelling in a black sport
Now I'm really doin' pull ups
Got a honeymoon for the summer tryna get a six-pack for it
Say I won't catch 'Crae slippin' in the studio at like 3 AM
Autograph that forehead with a Sharpie pen and then Instagram
Might swag out a fanny pack
    I might bring Velour back
Nobody wanna change the game, man y'all just want more trap
Okay, say I won't rap over bagpipes
Say I won't talk about that price
To know Christ and live life like every night my last night
'Bout to switch up the program
    I rock name-brand, I rock no brand
My whole life GoPro cam, got rap like I had no fans, nope
They say, I know I say, "veto"
Danny DaVito, and Al Pacino, those are my people
    Also I'm rockin' the speedo
This that casino, you bet your revenue
Thinking you'll stop me, no never not letting you
You must be high on that medical thinking I won't
But I know better, know that I bet I do (kill 'em, ooh)

Say I won't (why y'all scared to be different?)

Say I won't sell my shoes and take my kids to Chuck E Cheese with the money
Say I won't bring my own bottle of Pellegrino to the movies with me
    Say I won't
Look, I'm from an era of fast living and mass terror
Boys cover them cover girls like mascara
I don't need to keep a gun and a mask ever
I still make 'em put their hands up, ask Derek
My role manager damage all of you amateurs
Sneaking up on a tour bus with a demo to hand to us
When I was younger, I just wanted a chain
Now a chain of events has afforded a change
See, I been a rebel since back in the day, I don't follow the people
I follow the leader through valleys and shadows of death and I fearin' no evil
So say I won't do it, say I won't turn the music up and get to it
Won't come down H-Town all the way to their town
In the old school, drop top Buick
And I'm getting, maybe 8 or 9 miles to the gallon
    Still feeling like a stallion
I got Andy ridin' shotgun with 30 gold chains on, talking about he Italian
Say I won't go drop a double album, and rap double time on all dub-step
Got no producers, just me rockin' over beatboxin' by Dougie Fresh

"I'm a dad. I don't mind being a dad, 'Look at all of these shoes I've got. I've got an incredible shoe collection. I'll sell them all and take my kids to Chuck E. Cheese. I don't care. It's not that serious. Let's enjoy life,'" Lecrae added "That's what it's about."

  • The video was premièred during halftime of the December 16, 2014 Brooklyn Nets vs. Miami Heat game at the Barclays Center. "Who else can say they did that? I like the innovation of it," Lecae said.

    We Still In This Bitch
  • This song finds B.o.B thugging hard as he responds to his haters, telling them they can't shut him down. The track is believed by some to be a response to all those who opposed Obama being re-elected to his second term in office.
  • B,O.B's fellow Southern rappers T.I. and Juicy J jump in with a verse each where they outline their success in the game and brag about their luxury cars.
  • The song initially appeared on B.o.B's ninth mixtape, F--k 'Em We Ball, which was released on November 15, 2012. It was later dropped on January 8, 2013 as the first single from Underground Luxury, climbing to #64 on the Hot 100.
  • B.O.B. explained to Rolling Stone the meaning of his album title: "To me, 'underground luxury' is kinda like a contrasting title and the reason for that is because on this album I plan on introducing to people and reintroducing to people the side of me that they didn't see on the first album," he said. "On that album, I didn't really show my underground side and I didn't really tell my story as much and as vividly as I'm telling it now."

"Telling a story isn't always a linear thing that involves going from point A to point B -- it's about putting myself back in a mind state to when I was struggling and when I had to really go out of my way to make ends meet when I was coming out of high school and really struggling," B.O.B added. "It's really like a retelling of the story from a different perspective."

You was supposed to make it
You was supposed to make it
You was supposed to make it

Tell me why it is now that we live only for the moment
Erybody going deeper to the dark
Point of no return, following the evil, running from the Lord
    Hatred in the heart
Poison ? a nigga use to play and trade toys with a nigga
Now you gotta go to war with a nigga
Just because you got more than a nigga
Motherfucker Kamikaze you, they rather die then see you live fly
Crabs in a barrel, in ghetto America
Man, we just lucky that we make it out
See so much potential, lost some reputation, you would think eventually we will get it
They say you got it, they don't even want it
It just hurt so much for them to see you with it
What I know 'bout Satan, he patiently wait
To rob and steal and kill off greatness in the making
What we put together never let ‘em take it
Goddamn shawty you were 'pose to make it

You was supposed to make it
You was supposed to make it
You was supposed to make it
You was supposed to make it
    Lighters up, lighters up
    Lighters up, lighters up
    Lighters up, lighters up
    Lighters up, lighters up
You was supposed to make it
You was supposed to make it
    Lighters up, lighters up
Get your lighters up, lighters up

You know when I met you, sitting in the car
Buck head in the mall, you was something special
He was just a young nigga,
    Still he never got excited,
It was hard to overwhelm a fat nigga with a eye patch, swingin' hard
    Reppin' role tide Alabama
You can tell he was kickin' too much flavour on a country nigga made 'em wanna kill him
Still to see him smiling shawty, he be chillin'
Nigga wish him dead, he ain't even feel it
At your video, I could feel the ?
We was at the club, nigga couldn't get it in, they was stuck outside
Start to look at you, and as you should you looked like "fuck I 'posed to do?"
Asked you 'bout it then, said "ay brah you cool?"
You said "I ain't worry 'bout the lil dude"
Get they feelings hurt, got a attitude,
They'll come around in a year or two
Made you Hustle Gang, let you in the family
Said "I get you rich" you said "you want a Grammy"
Showed you how to mix the Actavis
Candy, doin' 160 with me, he ain't panic
Called me yesterday, I say "lil bro what's happening?
Working with Pharell, chillin' in Miami"
All you said was "run it, book the flight I'm coming
'Fore I leave though, I gotta handle something"
I just said "ok" I hung up the phone
Couple hours later, damn my nigga gone

You was suppose to make it
You was suppose to make it
You was suppose to make it
You was suppose to make it

    Devil's business, my brother gone
Supposed to be a living legend
    Hating nigga sent you home
But when we see that guy, we gon' treat him like the sky
    On the 4th of July
    And light him up

    Lighters up, lighters up
    Lighters up, lighters up
    Lighters up, lighters up
    Lighters up, lighters up
You was supposed to make it
You was supposed to make it
    Lighters up, lighters up

  • T.I. penned this song after the untimely passing of his rising protégé Doe B., who was murdered in his hometown Montgomery, Alabama in December 2013. The young rapper was actually on his way to record with T.I. and Pharrell the day he was shot. "The night we made 'Paperwork,' I was telling Pharrell about Doe and he immediately said, 'Get him down here, let's work.'"

So, T.I. called Doe B two days after Christmas. "I told him Pharrell wanted to work with him and he immediately said he was on the way," he recalled. "He just had a stop to make at a club that some DJs were doing a party at and they was looking forward to him showing up. He felt obligated, he had to go do that."

"Before that morning came, he died," T.I. added. "Pharrell was expecting him. [I had to tell him], "Man lil' bruh died last night."

Pharrell insisted that the Atlanta rapper document his feelings immediately, while the pain was fresh. "That record was recorded the day he died, so the feeling was very surreal and it was extremely heavy on my heart," T.I. said.

    This world
    This world is cold
    But you don't
    You don't have to go
You're feeling sad, you're feeling lonely,
And no one seems to care
You're mother's gone and your father hits you
    This pain you cannot bear

But we all bleed the same way as you do
And we all have the same things to go through

Hold On if you feel like letting go
Hold on it gets better than you know

    Your days
You say they're way too long
    And your nights
    You can't sleep at all
    Hold on
And you're not sure what you're waiting for,
But you don't want to no more
And you're not sure what you're looking for,
But you don't want to no more

But we all bleed the same way as you do
And we all have the same things to go through

Hold on if you feel like letting go
Hold on it gets better than you know
Don't stop looking, you're one step closer
Don't stop searching, it's not over
    Hold on

    What are you looking for?
    What are you waiting for?
Do you know what you're doing to me?
    Go ahead,
    What are you waiting for?

Hold on if you feel like letting go
Hold on it gets better than you know
Don't stop looking, you're one step closer
Don't stop searching, it's not over
Hold on if you feel like letting go
Hold on it gets better than you know
    Hold on

    Hold On
  • This is an anti-suicide song. It is a response to all the kids who wrote letters to the band explaining how bad their lives are and how they feel like sometimes there's nothing to do but just give up and cave in to suicide. The band urged these kids to hold on when their world feels like it's not going to get any better, because there's so much to live for. Suicide may seem like the answer at the time, but it accomplishes nothing in the long run. (thanks, Amanda - Brewster, NY and Jesi - Hollywood, FL)
  • A suicide prevention group helped them put together the video. It showed real people who were effected by suicides.
  • While promoting the album, Joel explained the song's significance: "Every night on tour at least one, two, sometimes 10 kids tell me how they deal with suicide, like that they're thinking about it. I couldn't sleep at night 'cause all of these kids, they're fans I care about, and i don't want 'em to kill themselves, so I wrote 'Hold on' and put it on the record. That was like the only way I could do something about it. Our fans are the most important thing to me and this whole band, and there's so many kids out there that I meet and that I care about and I only get like two minutes with them and then I have to go on."

Benji added: "And you hope that you said the right thing."
  • The title is repeated 11 times throughout the song.

    Guilty Conscience Lyrics

    Meet Eddie, twenty-three years old.
Fed up with life and the way things are going,
He decides to rob a liquor store.
("I can't take this no more, I can't take it no more homes")
But on his way in, he has a sudden change of heart.
And suddenly, his conscience comes into play
("Shit is mine, I gotta do this, gotta do this")

    Alright, stop! (Huh?)
Now before you walk in the door of this liquor store
And try to get money out the drawer
You better think of the consequence (But who are you?)
    I'm your motherfuckin' conscience

    That's nonsense!
Go in and gaffle the money and run to one of your aunt's cribs
And borrow a damn dress, and one of her blonde wigs
Tell her you need a place to stay
You'll be safe for days if you shave your legs with Renee's razor blade

Yeah but if it all goes through like it's supposed to
The whole neighborhood knows you and they'll expose you
Think about it before you walk in the door first
Look at the store clerk, she's older than George Burns

Fuck that! Do that shit! Shoot that bitch!
Can you afford to blow this shit? Are you that rich?
Why you give a fuck if she dies? Are you that bitch?
Do you really think she gives a fuck if you have kids?

Man, don't do it, it's not worth it to risk it! (You're right!)
    Not over this shit (Stop!)
    Drop the biscuit (I will!)
Don't even listen to Slim yo, he's bad for you
(You know what Dre? I don't like your attitude)

("It's alright c'mon, just come in here for a minute")
    ("Mm, I don't know!")
    ("Look baby")
    ("Damn!")
("Yo, it's gonna be alright, right?")
    ("Well OK")

Meet Stan, twenty-one years old. ("Give me a kiss!")
After meeting a young girl at a rave party,
Things start getting hot and heavy in an upstairs bedroom.
Once again, his conscience comes into play ("Shit!")
Now listen to me, while you're kissin' her cheek
And smearin' her lipstick, I slipped this in her drink
Now all you gotta do is nibble on this little bitch's earlobe
(Yo! This girl's only fifteen years old
You shouldn't take advantage of her, that's not fair)
Yo, look at her bush, does it got hair? (Uh huh!)
Fuck this bitch right here on the spot bare
Til she passes out and she forgot how she got there
(Man, ain't you ever seen that one movie "Kid")
No, but I seen the porno with SunDoobiest!
(Shit, you wanna get hauled off to jail?)
Man fuck that, hit that shit raw dog and bail
Meet Grady, a twenty-nine year old construction worker.
After coming home from a hard day's work,
He walks in the door of his trailer park home
To find his wife in bed with another man.
    ("What the fuck!")
    ("Grady!")

Alright calm down, relax, start breathin'
Fuck that shit, you just caught this bitch cheatin'
While you at work she's with some dude tryin' to get off?
Fuck slittin' her throat, cut this bitches head off!
Wait! What if there's an explanation for this shit?
(What? She tripped? Fell? Landed on his dick?)
Alright Shady, maybe he's right Grady
But think about the baby before you get all crazy
Okay! Thought about it, still wanna stab her?
Grab her by the throat, get your daughter and kidnap her?
That's what I did, be smart, don't be a retard
You gonna take advice from somebody who slapped Dee Barnes?
    What you say? (What's wrong?
    Didn't think I'd remember?)
    I'm a kill you motherfucker!
    Uh-ah! Temper temper!

    Mr. Dre? Mr. N.W.A.?
Mr. AK comin' straight outta Compton y'all better make way?
How in the fuck you gonna tell this man not to be violent?
'Cause he don't need to go the same route that I went
Been there, done that, aw fuck it
    What am I sayin'?
Shoot em both Grady, where's your gun at?

    Guilty Conscience
  • Featuring Dr. Dre, this song takes looks at different cases of people forced to make a good or a bad decision. Dre plays the good conscience, while Eminem (in Slim Shady mode) plays the naughty side inherent in all of us.
  • It was Dre who came up with the idea of a duet in the form of a lurid morality play. Eminem told NME: "The whole concept for 'Guilty Conscience' is from Animal House, where the girl has passed out and the guy has to decide what he does. He has a Devil on one shoulder, an angel on the other."
  • At the end of this song, Eminem convinces Dr. Dre that the guy who caught his wife cheating should shoot her after all. Dre maintains his composure until the end, when he declares, "Aw, f--k it, shoot 'em both."

MTV and BET both faded out the video early when they aired it, leaving the song with Dr. Dre taking the high road.
  • The song contains a sample of Ronald Stein's "Go Home Pigs" from the soundtrack to the 1970 film Getting Straight.
  • Actor Robert Culp is the narrator in the song's music video. You might recognize him from his recurring role as Warren Whelan on Everybody Loves Raymond. Those of a certain age will likely know him from the Bill Cosby starring espionage series I Spy, where he played Kelly Robinson.
  • The repartee between Dre and Em in this song gets very personal, with Eminem referring to his baby mama drama, and asking, "You gonna take advice from someone who slapped Dee Barnes?"

This is a reference to Dre's 1991 altercation with the female television host Dee Barnes. Dre reportedly roughed her up because he was upset over comments Ice Cube made on her show.
  • This was originally titled "Night & Day."

  • The second single off Sex Playlist, Omarion's debut release on Rick Ross' Maybach Music label, this features a clap-heavy West Coast production by DJ Mustard. Omarion kicks the song off with warnings that he is likely to steal your girl. He then passes the baton to a similarly brash Chris Brown, who raps and sings the second verse. Jhené Aiko slows things down at the end crooning the closing rhymes.
  • Aiko's lyric, "I might let your boy chauffeur me. But he got to eat the booty like groceries," was inspired by rapper Kevin Gates. She said: "When I heard the song was titled "Post to Be' it reminded me of the Kevin Gates video where he says 'I'm pose to eat the booty.'"

Aiko elaborated on her lyric to MTV News: "I wrote my verse with Micah Powell, someone that I've written with before and I just told him, 'Whatever we say I want to make sure we say something about eat the booty,'" she explained, with a bit of a chuckle.
"It was a fun song. I wanted my part to be funny and unexpected and ironically 'groceries' rhymes with 'post to be' and so it works."
  • Omarion decided to make this a collaboration track because he wanted to show R&B camaraderie. "I have a long history with Jhene and Chris, and the organic connection, the friendship, that we have with each other ended up on the track," he explained to Billboard magazine. "I want people know that this is a real effort into showing what futurists are all about, and that is breaking the sound barrier and creating something that hasn't been created before. When's the last time you heard three singers on one track that still felt like a party? That's what 'Post to Be' is, and it's been received so well."

Raw got a little riddle, riddle, twerk for a star
Started from the, like Christina, got a million
Man I'm a good guy, turned to a villain

All we do is ball, all we do is ball, now I'm passed out

    Sky dweller check, helicopter pad
    Dropping off a body bag
Money talk, guess I got the gift of gab
    Don't interject, don't intercept
You ain't on a jet, you ain't meet a bitch with this kind of money yet
Yeah, I got an Audemar, I ain't set the time once
And I know they say they shine, I ain't seen 'em shine once
All these rappers is my sons, and I'm always nine months

I'm just makin' all these deposits
Neighborhood nice and quiet, thought I saw Mr. Rogers, nigga
I could sell salt and equalize it, wait
I said I could sell salt and equalize it
Boy, I got every award but a Heisman
Do a drive by on you niggas, make a U-turn for survivors
Take a newborn from his Momma, stick a shoe horn in vaginas
Got the coupe on Yokohamas, got the super soaker chopper
We'll kidnap the kingpin, like "Who is your supplier?"
Nigga better know the fire, nigga better know somebody
I know niggas that'll kill ya for a little notoriety
I can make a lion say "Meow"
I'm in this mothafucka' gettin' money 'til I'm senile Tunechi!

    Senile
  • This dark, minimal track originally started as a single for Tyga, who first got Nicki Minaj featured on it, then his label boss Lil Wayne. "Originally it was just a joint from my album that I was gonna drop and I just heard Nicki on it, so I went to the studio where she was recording, I played it for her, and she was like, 'You should put Wayne on it, too,'" Tyga recalled.

Due to Tyga's fourth studio album not coming out till later in 2014 they decided to include it on the Young Money compilation project.
  • Chicago-native producer David "DA" Doman (Tyga's "Do My Dance," Fabolous' "When I Feel Like It") supplied the beat. He told Vibe magazine: "Everybody killed their verses. Tyga brought back that low tone that he's famous for from 'Rack City.' Nicki absolutely murdered her verse too, she came really creative on it. Wayne went just totally crazy on the third verse."
  • Director Colin Tilley linked the Young Money boss with a different kind of family for the video. "It's just basically like some old Addams Family-type, trailer-park trash and Wayne is just like in these different houses going crazy," Tyga told MTV News.
