Mighty Mighty

With the chorus line, "We are people, of the mighty, mighty people of the sun," this is one of the more spiritual Earth, Wind & Fire songs. "There are certain aspects which have to be kept clean, things that relate directly to the Creator," Maurice White told Blues & Soul in 1975. "By adopting a totally positive approach to our life, we can reflect this in our music."

Many of EW&F's most upbeat songs are also their most meaningful, the idea being that celebration through music can bring us to a higher power.

Maurice White wrote this song with his younger brother/bass player Verdine. The song, which was the lead single from the band's fifth album, became their biggest hit to this point.

According to Verdine White, many radio stations refused to play this song because they thought it was about black power.

The band recorded the Open Our Eyes album at Caribou Ranch Studios in Colorado. A big influence on their sound was Charles Stepney, who co-produced the band with Maurice White until Stepney's death in 1976.

Regarding the recording of this song, Verdine White told us : "I remember we just got into a groove, man. We just got into it. You know what I mean? That was one of our favorite songs to record and play."

Against The Wind

Seger said of this song: "My old friend Glenn Frey of the Eagles had an idea that our guitarist Drew Abbott should play along with the piano solo. He and I then went out and did the background vocals together. The line 'Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then' bothered me for the longest time, but everyone I knew loved it so I left it in. It has since appeared in several hits by other artists, so I guess it's OK."

Seger later clarified: "The only thing that bothered me about that phrase was the grammar. It sounded grammatically funny to me. I kept asking myself, 'Is that correct grammar?' I liked the line, and everybody I played it for – like Glenn and Don (Henley) – were saying, 'That's the best line in the song,' but I couldn't shake the feeling that it wasn't right. But I slowly came around. You have to understand that songwriters can't punctuate anything they write. I work in such a narrow medium that I tend to second-guess things like that. As a matter of fact, I've seen that line in a few other songs since I came up with it, so I guess it was okay after all."

Seger won the 1980 Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal Grammy award for this song.

Seger: "The chorus to this song came into my head one night in 1977 as I was driving through the Hollywood Hills. Our drummer, David Teegarden, played an entire set of drums as we recorded and overdubbed another entire set of drums playing a different pattern. In other words, there's two sets of everything: snare, kick-drum, hi-hat, etc. Billy Payne (of Little Feat) sat in with us for the first time and played the last two instruments, piano and organ. When he was done, he asked for a tape to listen to on the way home. he called me the next day while he had been listening, he looked down and found himself going 100 miles an hour on the freeway." The third single from Ed Bruce's You're Not Leaving Here Tonight album, this peaked at #4 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. Bruce wrote the song with his then wife and manager Patsy. The pair were frequent collaborators and are best known for penning Waylon Jennings & Willie Nelson's hit single "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys."

The song finds the elderly narrator serenely reflecting back on a lifelong marriage:

Unlike the narrator and his wife, the Bruces' marriage didn't make the distance. After 22 years together, Ed filed for divorce on July 27, 1987 charging Patsy with "cruel and inhuman treatment."

Johnny Cash recorded the song and his version can be found on his 2014 posthumous album Out Among the Stars, which was produced by his son John Carter Cash.

Carter Cash told Billboard magazine: "This was a very different song for Johnny Cash to sing. The melody is pretty unique for him, I can't think of any other song of this type he ever recorded, the range is so extensive. He always had a way to know if a song could work, he had a way to make it his own."

This Static Major penned song finds Ginuwine anxiously waiting on his lover all night to come home and have sex with him.

The third single released from the singer's 100% Ginuwine album, it became his most successful song to that date, peaking at #16 on the Hot 100 and helping the LP reach double platinum status. However Ginuwine admitted to Billboard magazine that he initially was not in favour of its release. "I was really scared of it because it was so slow and I was singing really hard and really high. I was nervous about how it would be received by the public," he said.

"But my management at the time, Jomo Hankerson, he actually picked that one and said 'This is the one to go with,'" Ginuwine added. "We went with it and thank God he was right."

The music video was directed by Chris Robinson and featured an appearance by rapper Solé. Ginuwine began dating Solé soon after the promo was filmed and they wed in 2003.

This duet with Aaliyah was the only track on 100% Ginuwine with a featured guest. Ginuwine told Billboard magazine: "I was never really into doing features, but if I was going to do one it was going to be with her. We had the same management team; were under the same umbrella."
