Take It or Leave It Lyrics

Baby you should know by now that I'm right, for you.
But every time I step to you, you change your tune.
Sweet wheel of death keeps us holding our breathe.
I step to the right, you move to the left.
Unless no one else.
I'd rather die to myself.

Oh why, won't you make up your mind?
I think I must confess.
I'm starting to unwind.
I been trippin' over you.
So tell me something new.
Take It or Leave It.

Maybe I should pack my things and move on?
Maybe I'm foolin' myself and you're already gone?
Watching the flames wither and fade.
Trying to make sense of the look on your face.
I'm down, I'm an itch.
Just playin' that I can hold on.

Oh why, won't you make up your mind?
I think I must confess.
I'm learning to unwind.
I've been trippin' over you.
So tell me something new.
Take it or leave it.

Baby please.
Oh baby please.
Stay with me or cut me free.
Its all of me.
Oh why, wont you make up your mind?
I think I must confess.
I'm starting to unwind.
I been trippin' over you.
So tell me something new.
Take it or leave it.
Take it or leave it

Take It or Leave It
  • Vocalist Matt Shultz told the story of this song to MusicRadar.com : "We have a rehearsal cabin in Portland, Tennessee, which if you know anything about Portland, Tennessee, you know that only about 10 people live there," he said. "One day, the band was in the cabin, and Brad started playing this little guitar thing. Pretty soon, Jared started playing drums to it. Everyone jumped in and the song started to happen. It was one of those 'light-bulb' moments."

"We put together the verse, but the chorus didn't want to come to us," Shultz continued. "That was always a big problem with the song. We cut the track in the studio, but there was still no chorus. After a while, we started to get really down in the dumps, because at first this was the most promising song of all, and now it was just sitting there."

"One morning, I woke up in my living room, he concluded. "I picked up the guitar and the whole thing poured out. I literally sped down to Nashville to get to the studio to show it to the guys. We jumped right in and recorded it that day. Sometimes these things happen when they're gonna happen, and you just have to be patient."
  • The song's music video is set in a roller dancing contest. "I came up with the idea after seeing American Hustle," Shultz told Radio.com . "I just really liked the aesthetic, that kind of '70s disco, macho kind of thing. The video's kinda like Saturday Night Fever meets Skatetown USA, Patrick Swayze's first movie."

Shultz added, "We're like the backing band to this roller skating disco competition and the skaters that we got were amazing. Everything looked really authentic. It was awesome."

Look out for a surprise appearance from actress and and singer Juliette Lewis before the roller dancing begins.

I Walk The Line Revisited Lyrics

I'm back on board that '49 Ford in 1956
Long before the sun came up way out in the sticks
The headlight showed a two rut roadway, back up in the pines
First time I heard Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

I got my thrill behind the wheel upon my daddy?s lap
Grandpa rode co-pilot with a flashlight and a map
Cane pole out the window it was in the summertime
First time I heard Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep my eyes wide open all the time
I keep the ends out for the tie that binds
Because you're mine, I walk the line

I never will forget that day, I know the time and place
Sounded like the whole thing came right down from outer space
I still can see those headlights and that dashboard in my mind
The first time I heard Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

I find it very, very easy to be true
I find myself alone when each day's through
Yes, I'll admit that I'm a fool for you
Because you're mine, I walk the line

All these long years later it's still music to my ears
I swear it sounds as good right now as anything I hear
I've seen the Mona Lisa, I've heard Shakespeare read real fine
Just like hearing Johnny Cash sing I walk the line

As sure as night is dark and day is light
I keep you on my mind both day and night
And happiness I've know proves that it's right
Because you're mine, I walk the line

Because you're mine, I walk the line

    Black Widow Lyrics

Standing there with your red coat on
    French perfume looking vulnerable
Black Widow girl you sit and wait
Till I climb into the web you made

    I'm an animal,
    You got me losing control
    You got me losing control
    You got me losing control
    It's not right

I can't take it no more girl
    I can't take this abuse
Every time that you walk in the room girl
I'm hypnotized by the way that you move
It's the way that you move

You call me out at your beck and call
Set me up just to watch me fall
Twist and turn bend and sway
I move in then you push away

I'm an animal you got me losing control
You got me losing control you got me losing control
    It's not right

I can't take it no more girl
    I can't take this abuse
Every time that you walk in the room girl
I'm hypnotized by the way that you move
It's the way that you move

I can't take it no more girl
    I can't take this abuse
Every time that you walk in the room the room
I'm Hypnotized by the way that you move

I can't tell you the future, I may promise the moon
'Cause every time that you walk in the room girl
I'm hypnotized by the way that you move

    Black Widow
  • This dance party tune finds Matt Shultz singing about a wicked girl. The black widow is a venomous American spider, which is black with red markings. The way the female black widow spiders lure males and mates them before eating them is a frequently used lyrical metaphor for women who are dishonest about their intentions. Here are some other examples:

"Die for Me Only (Black Widow)" by Lita Ford : "Plays with a vengeance. Controls our very soul. To weave you in my web of love. And never let you go."

"Black Widow" by Bruce Dickinson. "Black Widow And here, my prize, the Black Widow: Isn't she lovely? And so deadly. Her kiss is fifteen times more poisonous than the rattlesnake."

"Werewolf Women of the SS" by Rob Zombie: "They are the black widows, baby. Off the streets of Berlin. Pure wolf is the mission. She-Devils of sin. They're in control now. Strasser you are."

"There Goes" by Alan Jackson: "Like some big black widow spider. You know just how to catch your prey. I'm actin' like it doesn't matter. And you sneak up from behind and whisper my name."

"Gold Dust Woman" by Fleetwood Mac: "Pale shadow of a woman. Black widow. Pale shadow. She's a dragon. Gold dust woman."
  • Matt Shultz and his guitarist brother Brad disagreed about the use of horns on this song. Brad told MusicRadar.com : "I have a thing about brass, so I've wanted to have horns for a while. Matt is on the other side of that; he was never a big horn fan at all. We definitely have different opinions on that subject. This was one of the songs that led to our big argument. He just didn't share the vision I had for the horns. When we did it and it worked out, it turned out to be a really pleasant surprise."

    I Got A Name Lyrics

Like the pine trees lining the winding road
    I Got A Name, I got a name
Like the singing bird and the croaking toad
    I got a name, I got a name
And I carry it with me like my daddy did
But I'm living the dream that he kept hid

Moving me down the highway, rolling me down the highway
Moving ahead so life won't pass me by

Like the north wind whistlin' down the sky
    I got a song, I got a song
Like the whippoorwill and the baby's cry
    I got a song, I got a song
And I carry it with me and I sing it loud
If it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud

Moving me down the highway, rolling me down the highway
Moving ahead so life won't pass me by

And I'm gonna go there free

Like the fool I am and I'll always be
    I got a dream, I got a dream
They can change their minds but they can't change me
    I got a dream, I got a dream
Oh, I know I could share it if you'd want me to
If you're goin' my way, I'll go with you

Movin' me down the highway, rollin' me down the highway
Movin' ahead so life won't pass me by
Movin' me down the highway, rollin' me down the highway

    I Got A Name
  • This was the theme song for the 1973 movie The Last American Hero starring Jeff Bridges as a stock car racer. The movie is based on the true story of the stock car driver Junior Johnson.
  • This is a rare song that Croce recorded but did not write. Ingrid Croce, who was married to Jim from 1966 until his death in 1973, told us: "It was written by Norman Gimbel and Charles Fox. And they were wonderful guys, really nice people. Jim had been selected to sing this song for this particular movie. He really enjoyed this opportunity, because he went into the recording studio and it was a little awkward for him not to hold his guitar - his guitar is kind of like a bar for the bartender, having that prop between him and the audience was just a real security, it made him feel very comfortable. So putting down the guitar to sing, just to sing the song in the studio, was a very unusual thing for Jim, and he thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a brand new start for him in some ways, to use his vocals in a different way. I think it's one of the most powerful songs he does on that album for sure. I loved it."
  • Explaining how this song was a good fit for her husband, Ingrid says: "More people think he wrote that song. His voice was so unique... the timbre in his tone and his warmth and his generosity, everything came through that voice. So when he took a song, he'd make it his own, and I think he did a great job with 'I've Got A Name.' So many people like to think of Jim with that song that I hate to tell them it isn't his." (Read more in Ingrid Croce's Songfacts interview, and at Croces.com .)
  • The album was produced by Terry Cashman and Tommy West, who had a hit as Cashman & West with "American City Suite." Says Cashman: "We recorded it because Jim was going to get a lot of money to record the song, and if it was released as a single, it would be the main title of a movie called The Last American Hero. So it wasn't a song that Jim wrote on the guitar with Maury [Muehleisen]. Tommy and Jimmy and Maury and myself came up with the arrangement together. It was a different kind of animal. We did that song with just the tracks for us, and then recorded Jim's voice over it, which is the way most people did records in those days. But most people think that Jim wrote that song because it sounds like the other songs, and then the production of course is a little bit more elaborate. It was different in that way, but Maury has a big guitar part and it certainly sounded like one of his records. And it became one of his most popular records. You know, a lot of people have covered that song, and it's been used in a number of other movies." (from our interview with Terry Cashman)
  • This was the last song Croce played before his death. He performed it as an encore at show in Natchitoches, Louisiana at Northwestern College. The crowd was small, as many folks stayed home to watch the Billie Jean King vs. Bobby Riggs "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match that night. Croce's plane, taking off in the dark after the concert, clipped a tree and crashed, killing all six people on board.
  • Quentin Tarantino used this song in his 2012 film Django Unchained. The film is set in 1858, but features some modern music, including cuts by Rick Ross and John Legend. The song was used in a scene were Django (Jamie Foxx) has been freed.

Other films that have used the song include The Ice Storm (1997) and Invincible (2006).
  • Lena Horne sang this in 1976 on the first season of The Muppet Show. Horne's appearance earned the show a great deal of credibility, making it easier for the show's producers to find guests willing to perform with puppets.

    Teeth Lyrics

    Electrified harmonious
I think I'll take it out to the streets
    Somebody please stop me
Call the doctor but don't call the police

    Are you into the beat?
    Are you into the beat?
I can feel it in my Teeth

I can feel it in my teeth
I can feel it in my teeth
    And it's driving me mad
I can feel it in my teeth
I can feel it in my teeth and it's driving me crazy
It's driving me crazy, it's driving me mad

I wish I were an astronaut
    Space case planting the seed
They put me in a hospital
Locked me up and threw away the key

Hey, hey, hey, hey, are you into the beat?
I'm the king of the beat
I can feel it in my teeth

I can feel it in my teeth
I can feel it in my teeth
    And it's driving me mad

    Teeth
  • Vocalist Matt Shulz explained the song's meaning to MusicRadar.com : "The song is about feeling the energy of music changing," he said. "There's a real exciting scene going on in Nashville with a bunch of bands. It carries a familiar nostalgic sentiment, but at the same time everybody's trying to do something different. So 'Teeth' is about the vibrancy of life and how things are changing."

"There's this overwhelming need that some people have," he continued, "they want to cater to cool or feed a certain image; either that or they try to write to sound artistic or intellectual. What's best is when you're transparent, standing there naked and just pouring your heart out. This song is like a letter to myself, telling myself that it's OK to be honest."
  • Shultz's lyrics were inspired by the Hanna-Barbera cartoon lion, Snagglepuss. He told Music Radar: "The character had this cool posture that I wanted to take on in my vocal delivery."
  • The spoken-word part that happens at the end of the song came about after Matt Shultz talked to some friends about the creative process. He explained: "I was talking about writing lyrics just to sound poetic rather than speaking from your heart. My friend said that I should stop writing lyrics for the sake of poetry, and I should just write lyrics the way that I speak, because that's what's poetic."

"At first, I was kind of offended," he continued, "but he was right. I did this experiment where I had my friends come over, and we'd crack open a bottle of wine and sit down with a typewriter. I told them to just speak from their hearts, and I tell you, I felt like a therapist – they would be weeping in my living room. Those words came out of that experiment. I'd pull lines from the things that they told me, various phrases that I'd embellish. It was pretty powerful."

When you hear twin fiddles and a steel guitar
You're listenin' to the sound of the American heart
And opry music on a Saturday night
Brings a smile to your face and a tear to your eye

    [Chorus: x2]

  • This song features vocals from former Clipse rapper and Kanye West collaborator Pusha T. Chase & Status' Will Kennard told The Sun: "I think Pusha T is one of the best rappers in the States, he's never gone down the commercial route. He's so street still. There was a mutual link, we sent him a beat, he liked it."
  • The production duo wanted to take Clipse in a different direction with the '90s-flavored track. Saul Milton (Chase) explained to Spotify listeners: "We just wanted to put him on something that he's never done before, and I think we succeeded. We've got a really dark, kind of like moody intro with him spitting his bars on it and then we dropped in some kind of Hip Hop track... nods to Dubstep still with old hardcore stabs in there, and break beat at the end of the fills… really reminiscent of the period of time."

    Every once in a while
    I'd see her smile
And she'd turn my day around
    A girl with those eyes
    Could stare through the lies
And see what your heart was saying

Think Of Laura but laugh don't cry

I know she'd want it that way

    A friend of a friend
    A friend till the end
That's the kind of girl she was
    Taken away so young
    Taken away without a warning

I know you and you're here
    In everyday we live
I know her and she's here
I can feel her when I sing

Hey Laura, where are you now

    Think Of Laura
  • Christopher Cross wrote this song about Laura Coffin Carter, an 18-year-old student at Denison University in Granville, Ohio who was killed by a stray bullet on April 17, 1982. She was riding in a car with her parents and three friends when gunfire broke out a block away and the bullet hit her in the chest.

Cross was dating Paige McNinch, who was Laura's best friend and one of her sorority sisters. He wrote this song to honor Laura's memory:

A friend of a friend, a friend to the end
That's the kind of girl she was
    Taken away so young
    Taken away without a warning

Think of Laura but laugh, don't cry
I know she'd want it that way
  • Cross released this song on his second album, Another Page, in January 1983. Later that year, the song was used on the popular soap opera General Hospital as the love theme for the characters Luke and Laura, who were arguably the most well known of all daytime TV couples - their 1981 wedding was the highest-rated episode in American soap opera history. Its use on the show vaulted the song up the charts, and in February 1984 it reached #9 on the US Hot 100 and went to #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, where it stayed for four weeks.
  • Boyz II Men recorded a new version of this song called "Think of Aaliyah (The Aaliyah Song)" in honor of the singer Aaliyah after she died in 2001. The song was never officially released, but appeared on various download sites and can be found on YouTube.
  • This wasn't the first song General Hospital pushed up the charts. In 1979, the Herb Alpert song "Rise" was used in a scene (and subsequent flashbacks) where Luke rapes Laura (yes, that's how their story arc started - strange things happened on daytime TV), sending it to #1 in the US. In 1982, "Baby, Come To Me" by Patti Austin and James Ingram stalled at #73 US, but when the show started using it for Luke and Laura scenes, it revived the song, which made #1 in February 1983.

Remember one time, dawg, this fiend owed the boss
Put Peanut Butter on her pussy, let his pits lick it off
Back when I was living on Flanders
Seen another dope fiend beat another with a hammer
Remember at the park, seen a nigga at a payphone
Got rocked in his dome, momma picked me up and ran home
Was like fucking seven years old
When I first seen a fiend try to light a rock off the stove
Damn near burned his top lip off, so my mind ticked off
Desensitized to a lotta things, mind would drift off
Wish it was what I seen on tv, I snapped outta that
    Unc' beating on my auntie
Gunshots outside was sorta like fireworks
We know they ain't fireworks, its December 21'st
Cold winter with a kerosene heater on the couch so cold
    Can't take off your sneakers

    And it's Torture
Look in my mind and see the horrors
All the shit that I've seen
    Nigga, it's torture
Look in my mind and see the horrors
All the shit that I've seen
    Nigga, it's torture
Look in my mind and see the horrors
All the shit that I've seen

I feel like a prisoner of war
Reacting sporadically to what the mind absorb
Probably need a shrink, can't get a wink
So I smoke a lot of kush and pop a Xanax to sleep
Close my eyes, look up, fiend said 1 for 8
Can tell that I scared him by the look on my face
Reached in my pocket served him nervous as a surgeon
Can't believe where I'm at 'pose be writin' verses
Heard a knock at the do', 'Nother fiend wanted fo'
Gave him what he came for, told him go to the sto'
Lemme get a box a box of Swishers, Faygo Cola
Gave his ass another stone now guess what it's over
He ain't come back, before I could look back
I heard the wood on the door crack, and they yelling police
With this work up in my jeans man this a bad dream

    And it's torture
Look in my mind and see the horrors

"I can't sleep at night because I have these nightmares all the time," Brown explained to MTV News, breaking down the song. "I don't know if you can really consider them nightmares, but it'll be dreams of me being back in the day, as a 19-year-old, and I get so caught up in the dream that when I wake up, I'm so just happy to be where I'm at in my life. Dip Lyrics

Dip, I dip, you dip, dip, I dip, you dip, I dip
Dip, I dip, you dip, dip, I dip, you dip, I dip
Dip, you dip, I dip, dip, you dip, I dip, you dip
Dip, I dip, you dip, dip, I dip, you dip, I dip
Don't let me into my zone, don't let me into my zone
Don't let me into my zone, you haters leave me alone
I say, don't let me into my zone, don't let me into my zone
Don't let me into my zone, you haters leave me alone

Like Lieutenant Dan, I'm rolling, back to back, I keep on smoking
Eyes keep shaking and I can't stay focused
I'm fucked if you niggas ain't noticed
I'm sweating but I'm cold, mouth all dry but I got a runny nose
I just bought me a water bottle
Chug that down but I think I need me some more
And I keep feeling like I'm gon' faint, but fuck that nigga, pass me that drank
I done drunk too much, I might throw up in a hotel bathroom sink
Bitch, I'm wilding, I'm zooted, can't believe that I'm even moving
Off a half a gram of molly, we about to go party, and I don't know what I'm doing

Now all these rappers talking 'bout that molly
Bet a million dollars these niggas ain't dipping
Pure MDMA, put it in a shot we talking 'bout crystals
Been dancing hard up all day, rest in peace to Mac Dre
Throw up the T, scratch on my face, do the Thizzle dance up in the place
I'm grinding on your bitch while I'm grinding on my teeth
Don't give a flying fuck, so right now you don't want beef
I'm blown, I'm zooted, can't believe that I'm even moving
Off a half a gram of molly, we about to go party, and I don't know what I'm doing

She licked it off my index, before that she been wet
Now she licking on her best friend while they suck me watching sunset
That's right bitch we ain't done yet, lifting up her sundress
It kicked in she licking, before I blink she undressed
Molly making her feel good, it's a feeling she can't explain
But obvious we got some problems, so bitch, let's kill that pain
    I'm blown, I'm zooted, can't believe I'm even moving
Off a half a gram of molly, we about to go party, and I don't know what I'm doing

Go Rest High On That Mountain Lyrics

    I know your life
    On earth was troubled
And only you could know the pain.
You weren't afraid to face the devil,
You were no stranger to the rain.

Go Rest High On That Mountain
Son,your work on earth is done.
    Go to heaven a-shoutin'
Love for the Father and the Son.

Oh,how we cried the day you left us
We gathered round your grave to grieve.
I wish I could see the angels faces
When they hear your sweet voice sing.

Go rest high on that mountain
Son,your work on earth is done.
    Go to heaven a-shoutin'
Love for the Father and the Son.

Go Rest High On That Mountain
  • Gill began writing this following the untimely death of Country music superstar Keith Whitley. Gill didn't finish the song until a few years later following the death of his brother. Thus, the song is a tribute song to both Keith Whitley and Gill's brother.
  • Additional background vocals were provided by Patty Loveless and Ricky Skaggs.
  • Gill played this song during his induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in February 2009. He explained he penned it after his older brother Bob's death from a heart attack in 1993. "I wrote this song, and I didn't have any idea if anybody would want to hear it, or like it. All I wanted to do was grieve for him and celebrate his life. That's how I always process grief—sit down with a guitar and make something up. Turns out that if anybody remembers any of my songs, it'll be this one."
  • This won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Country Song.
