Columbia Lyrics

There we were now here we are
All this confusion nothings the same to me
There we were now here we are
All this confusion nothings the same to me

But I can't tell you the way I feel
Because the way I feel is oh so! new to me
No I can't sell you the way I feel
Because the way I feel is oh so! new to me

What I heard is not what I hear
I can see the signs but they're not very clear
What I heard is not what I hear
I can see the signs but they're not very clear

This is confusion am I confusing you?

Columbia
  • This was the first song that Noel Gallagher wrote with Oasis. He recalled to Q magazine: "One Sunday afternoon I was at home watching EastEndersd when our kid rings up and says, 'You coming down for a jam?' I'd never played with anyone else ever. I went, 'Alright.' I'm asking, 'Do you know any Beatles songs?' 'No.' 'Not Ticket To Ride?'

"We sit there for hours and hours, dead hot and sweaty, and its great," Gallagher continued. "Same the next Sunday and – just because they didn't know any Beatles, really – we decide to write a song ourselves and I come up with what turns out to be Columbia."
  • Oasis opened their first gig at Manchester's Boardwalk on (probably) January 15, 1992 with this song. Noel Gallagher recalled to Q magazine: "It went down like a f---ing knackered lift (laughs). We played this epic, six minute, stone-grooved song, dow, wow, dow, duh duh, the total crossing of rock music and dance music beyond anything that's been heard before and everyone's like (blank face). Soul destroying. This bowl of silence."
  • This was Bonehead's favorite song to play live.
  • Noel Gallagher explained the song's background in the liner notes to Definitely Maybe's 2014 reissue: "When we started, we didn't have a lot of songs so we would jam out current Acid House favourites and f--k about. 'Columbia' derived from one of those nights. It was an instrumental and we played it the first night I ever did a gig with Oasis. When we started at The Real People's studio, somebody had the idea of adding lyrics and it's still a bone of contention to this day who actually wrote the words. We were all on acid at the time but I know I wrote 90 percent of them. It's named in honour of the hotel (in London). Because when I was a roadie with Mark Coyle working for the Inspiral Carpets, we loved that hotel, it was the scene of many nights of nonsense. And it sounded like a good title. I mean, why call anything anything?"

    Pulling Teeth Lyrics

    I'm all busted up
    Broken bones and nasty cuts
    Accidents will happen
But this time I can't get up
She comes to check on me
Making sure I'm on my knees
    After all she's the one
Who put me in this state

    Is she ultra violent?
    Is she disturbed?
I better tell her that I love her
Before she does it all over again
    Oh God, she's killing me!!!

    For now I lie around
Hell that's all I can really do
She takes good care of me
Just keep saying my love is true

    Is she ultra violent?
    Is she disturbed?
I better tell her that I love her
Before she does it all over again
    Oh God, she's killing me!!!

Looking out my window for someone that's passing by
No one knows I'm locked in here
    All I do is cry

    For now I lie around
Hell that's all I can really do
She takes good care of me
Just keep saying my love is true

    Pulling Teeth
  • This song is a tongue-in-cheek look at an abusive relationship. Billie Joe wrote it around an inside joke the band had with bassist Mike Dirnt after he was sent to the emergency room for injuries resulting from a pillow fight with his girlfriend at the time. Around the time of Kerplunk! they were at a friends house having a pillow fight when Mike ran around a corner and hit his head on a low ceiling beam. He fell backwards and broke both of his elbows.
  • The title itself is a further play on that inside joke. Metallica had a song on their Kill 'Em All album titled "(Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth." Mike's girlfriend who the song is loosely based on was named Anastasia, so they kept the "Pulling Teeth" from the Metallica track for the title. Mike eventually married her in 1996 and had 1 child with her; they have since divorced.

The Color Of The Night Lyrics

You and I moving in the dark
    Bodies close but souls apart
    Shadowed smiles and secrets unrevealed
I need to know the way you feel

    [Chorus]
I'll give you everything I am
And everything I want to be
I'll put it in your hands
If you could open up to me oh
Can't we ever get beyond this wall

'Cause all I want is just once
To see you in the light
    But you hide behind
    The Color Of The Night

I can't go on running from the past
Lave has torn away this mask
And now like clouds like rain I'm drowning and
I blame it all on you
I'm lost - God save me

'Cause all I want is just once
To see you in the light
    But you hide behind
    The color of the night

'Cause all I want is just once
    Forever and again
I'm waiting for you, I'm standing in the light
    But you hide behind
    The color of the night

    Please come out from
    The color of the night

    The Color Of The Night
  • The sultry British singer Lauren Christy scored a minor hit with this song, which was the theme to the 1994 Bruce Willis movie Color of Night, which is about a psychiatrist who stumbles into the murders of some clients in a therapy group he oversees. The film was a huge flop, but the passionate song, about a woman reaching out to a distant lover who seems to be hiding some kind of trauma, got decent airplay.
  • Lauren Christy wrote this song with Jud Friedman and Dominic Frontiere. Christy would make her mark as a songwriter as part of the writing team The Matrix, whose co-writes include "Complicated" by Avril Lavigne and "Extraordinary" by Liz Phair.

    In those dark sweaty rooms

He's waiting for just the right

    One by one as they
    Walk right through
    The door, they
    Keep on coming back I
    Guess they just want more

He has fun, fun, fun as you
Might call him a whore, but
Just look where he's at 'cause
He is the one that scores

    I saw my friend there
    Out on the field today
    I asked him where
    He's going, he said
    "All the way" now

    One by one as they

  • The last verse of this song was written in the back of a taxi by Noel Gallagher on the way to record the song. Liam said to Noel, "We haven't actually got a last verse for this song," so Noel wrote it there and then.
  • This bears a strong resemblance to the 1971 New Seekers song "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing," which was featured in a famous Coke commercial. The similarity between the songs became evident when Oasis tribute band No Way Sis recorded a version of "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" in 1996 doing their best to sound like Oasis.
  • The original opening lines to this song were "I'd like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony," but the band were forced to change the lyrics to "I'd like to be somebody else, and not know where I've been," as they didn't have permission to use these copyrighted lyrics. In early gigs, Oasis stuck with the original lyrics.
  • Oasis were successfully sued for unlicensed use of the song by the writers of "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing," a 1971 song by the New Seekers that was made famous in a Coke commercial where children gather on a hilltop to sing. Noel Gallagher cited "irony" as his defense and after losing, joked, "Now we all drink Pepsi."

  • This song is about a girl who doesn't know what to do with her life. Everyone is trying to tell her what to do, but she wants to take her own path.

It was inspired by Adrienne Nesser, who Billie Joe Armstrong was dating. They met at a Green Day show in 1990 and carried on a long-distance relationship until 1994, when they got married shortly after the band released their Dookie album and rose to fame. The couple stayed together and had two children.
  • The Dookie album cover contains images of many Green Day inspirations and characters from their life. Says Armstrong: "There's one guy with his camera up in the air taking a picture with a beard. He's this guy Murray that's been around the scene for a long time. He took pictures of bands every weekend at Gilman's. The robed character that looks like Ozzy Osbourne is the woman on the cover of the first Ozzy album. Angus Young is in there somewhere too. The graffiti reading 'Twisted Dog Sisters' refers to these 2 girls from Berkeley. They're punk rock girls that have been around for years."
  • This is one of Billie Joe Armstrong's favorite songs, and one he makes sure is included in every Green Day show. "I will play 'She' for the rest of my life," he told Rolling Stone in 2014. "It has aged well with me."

    Let Me In
  • R.E.M. wrote this about Kurt Cobain after he died in 1994. Cobain was a fan of R.E.M., and when he died, Courtney Love gave them one of Kurt's guitars, which they used on this. It was a left-handed Fender (and one of the few guitars Cobain didn't smash), so Mike Mills had to restring it to play it right-handed.
  • Kurt Cobain (Rolling Stone, January 27, 1994): "I know we're gonna put out one more record, at least, and I have a pretty good idea what it's going to sound like: pretty ethereal, acoustic, like R.E.M.'s last album (Automatic For The People). If I could write just a couple of songs as good as what they've written... I don't know how that band does what they do. God, they're the greatest. They've dealt with their success like saints, and they keep delivering great music."

    Heresy
  • This song is about confronting and questioning Christianity. The lyrics describe how Christianity is used to control people and how it contradicts itself: "His perfect kingdom of killing, suffering and pain demands devotion atrocities done in his name."
  • Nine Inch Nails mainman Trent Reznor explained that much of The Downward Spiral album dealt with how people were always trying to control you, and this song takes on a specific institution. He told Kerrang!: "Churches tell you to do this and that, or the punishment will be going to Hell. In every relationship you get into, someone wants to control it. I'm aware of that, I'm addressing it, I'm challenging it."

    Dear mother,
    Can you hear me whining?
    It's been three whole weeks
    Since I left your home
This sudden fear has left me trembling
'Cause now it seems that I
Am out here on my own
    And I'm feeling so alone

Pay attention to the cracked streets
    And the broken homes
    Some call it slums
    Some call it nice
I want to take you through
A wasteland I like to call my home
    Welcome To Paradise

A gunshot rings out at the station
    Another urchin snaps and
    Left dead on his own
It makes me wonder why I'm still here
For some strange reason it's now
    Feeling like my home
    And I'm never gonna go

Pay attention to the cracked streets
    And the broken homes
    Some call it slums
    Some call it nice
I want to take you through
A wasteland I like to call my home
    Welcome to paradise

    Dear Mother,
    Can you hear me laughing?
It's been six whole months since that
    I have left your home

    Welcome To Paradise
  • Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt wrote the lyrics to this song about a slum in Oakland where they lived together for a while as teenagers - they had a band at the time called Sweet Children. Armstrong explained: "It's about West Oakland, living in a warehouse with a lot of people, a bunch of artists and musicians, punks and whatever just lived all up and down, bums and junkies and thugs and gang members and stuff that just lived in that area. It's no place you want to walk around at night, but it's a neat warehouse where you can play basketball and stuff."
  • The video was compiled from footage shot when Green Day performed the song at the San Francisco club Slim's on February 1, 1994 - the same day Dookie was released. As shown in the video, the crowd of about 500 went absolutely nuts. Green Day would soon be playing to much larger crowds that showed a similar enthusiasm.
  • This was first released on Green Day's 1992 Kerplunk LP on Lookout! Records. When the band signed to the major label Reprise Records and cut the album Dookie, they re-recorded the song and included it on the album. It was one of 2 old Green Day songs they recorded during the Dookie sessions - they also re-recorded "409 In Your Coffeemaker" which originally appeared on their first EP, 39 Smooth. That song did not make it onto Dookie but was released on the international "Basket Case" single.
  • Green Day's drummer Tre Cool wrote the guitar riff for this song, and Billie Joe Armstrong wrote the drums. In their early days, Green Day would often swap positions in the band.
  • The forebear to this song is a track called "Sweet Children," which Green Day released in 1990 on an EP issued by Skene! Records (Sweet Children is also the name of the band Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt were in before they called it Green Day). This EP was sold at the band's early shows; if you listen to the melody, you'll hear how it was repurposed into "Welcome To Paradise."
  • Tre Cool said of this song: "It's like, 'Everything sucks but we're having fun anyway.' We'll look you in the eye and still smile, even if horrible things are happening."

I heard you crying loud, all the way across town
Cause you been searching for that someone
And it's me out on the prowl
As you sit around feeling sorry for yourself

Well, don't get lonely now, and dry your whining eyes
I'm just roaming for the moment
Sleazin' my back yard so don't get
So uptight you been thinking about ditching me

No time to search the world around
'Cause you know where I'll be found
    When I Come Around

Well, I heard it all before, so don't knock down my door
    I'm a loser and a user so I don't need no accuser
To try and slag me down because I know you're right

So go do what you like, make sure you do it wise
You may find out that your self-doubt means nothing
    Was ever there
You can't go forcing something if it's just not right

No time to search the world around

    When I Come Around
  • A track from Green Day's first major label album, this is a very personal song lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong wrote about being away from his girlfriend, Adrienne Nesser, and the frustrations they both felt when he was on the road. Billie Joe met Adrienne in 1990 when Green Day performed in Minnesota, where she lived. He was just 18, and found it difficult to maintain a long distance relationship, especially with his touring schedule. In this song, he affirms his devotion for her, assuring her that when he does get to see her (when he "comes around") he will make it up to her.

Billie Joe and Adrienne got married in July, 1994, a few months after Dookie was released and right in the midst of the band's rapid ascent to stardom (the band was touring at the time). The marriage endured, and couple had two children together.
  • MTV aired two different videos for this song. A concept video for the song was directed by Mark Kohr, and MTV also showed a live version from Green Day's infamous Woodstock '94 performance (lots of mud was in the air). They used this video to promote the MTV Woodstock '94 retrospective video tape.
  • Jason White, who sometimes played as a second guitarist for Green Day, is in this video. He's the guy kissing the girl.
  • When performing this song at Woodstock '94, a fan threw a clump of mud onstage and Billie Joe stuck it in his mouth. This caused the fans to keep throwing mud and started the infamous mud fight. A security guard (in a rush to get fans off of the stage) accidentally slammed bassist Mike Dirnt into an amplifier, causing him injuries to his arm and three of his teeth.
  • This song was not released as a single, which was a strategic move by Green Day's label (Reprise) to goose sales of the album. Airplay pushed the song to #6 in America.

Undone - The Sweater Song Lyrics

    Undone - The Sweater Song
  • This song is about going insane in public. Here's some lyric analysis:

"If you want to destroy my sweater, hold this thread as I walk away" - Keep doing what you're doing as I drift further into insanity.

"Watch me unravel, I'll soon be naked" - Watch me drift into insanity, I'll soon be there, "naked" being full insanity.

"Lying on the floor, I've come undone" - Lying on the floor, I've become mentally undone.
  • The opening dialogue is used to show how he is at a party, losing it, and no one notices or cares. The two verses are used to show how he's barely able to think and talk straight on his descent. The part about "I don't want to destroy your tank-top" is showing how other people are on the brink of insanity already, but he's not "pushing them off" like they are to him; then, "To see you lying there in your Superman skivvies" shows how everyone is on the brink of insanity to begin with, even more so then he was in his "sweater." The music helps illustrate the ever-maddening mind of the guy, as it starts out normal, then at the end is hard, dark, and mad-sounding, showing his slow descent into madness.
  • Many of the promotional singles sent to radio stations contained an edit that cut the guitar solo short. This was a distribution error, but it didn't have much effect because most radio stations played the album version.
  • This was the first Weezer song that Rivers Cuomo ever wrote, back in 1991. Three years later it was released as the band's first single.
  • Cuomo told Rolling Stone: "I was trying to write a Velvet Underground-type song because I was super into them, and I came up with that guitar riff. I just picked up that acoustic guitar and the first thing I played was that riff. And it just feels so classic to me, even now when the band starts to play it, it just takes over the energy in the room and you're just transported into the world of Weezer. It wasn't until years after I wrote it that I realized it's almost a complete rip-off of 'Sanitarium' by Metallica. It just perfectly encapsulates Weezer to me - you're trying to be cool like Velvet Underground but your metal roots just pump through unconsciously."
  • Cuomo told Billboard magazine: "It's been the case since our first album that people thought we were just being sarcastic and ironic. When I wrote 'The Sweater Song,' to me it was a very sad song about depression, and people heard it on the radio and thought it was hysterical."
  • This was used on the MTV series Undressed in the 1999 episode "If Words Could Kill #2."

I found out what it takes to be a man

    Coming Clean
  • Front man Billie Joe Armstrong has stated that this song is about coming out of the closet. Billie Joe himself stated, "I think I've always been bisexual" in a 1995 issue of The Advocate. He also brings up his thoughts on the issues of heterosexuality and homosexuality in the music world. (thanks, Lauren - Laurel Springs, NJ)
  • More from the Advocate interview with Billie Joe: "I think mostly it's been kept in my head. I've never really had a relationship with another man. But it is something that comes up as a struggle in me. It especially came up when I was about 16 or 17. In high school people think you have to be so macho. People get attacked just because someone insinuates something about their sexuality. I think that's gruesome." (thanks, Elvira - Moscow)

    Possum Kingdom Lyrics

    Make up your mind
    Decide to walk with me
    Around the lake tonight
    Around the lake tonight
    By my side
    By my side
    I'm not gonna lie
    I'll not be a gentleman
    Behind the boathouse
I'll show you my dark secret
    I'm not gonna lie
    I want you for mine
    My blushing bride
My lover, be my lover, yeah

    Don't be afraid
I didn't mean to scare you
    So help me, Jesus
    I can promise you
    You'll stay as beautiful
    With dark hair
    And soft skin, forever
    Forever

    Make up your mind
    Make up your mind
    And I'll promise you
    I will treat you well
    My sweet angel
    So help me, Jesus
    (hey, hey, hey)
    Give it up to me
    Give it up to me
    Do you wanna be
    My angel?

    So help me!
    Be my angel
    Be my angel
    Do you wanna die?
    I promise you
    I will treat you well
    My sweet angel
    So help me, Jesus
    Jesus
    Jesus

    Possum Kingdom
  • Possum Kingdom is a lake in Texas, near the Dallas/Ft. Worth area where the band is from - it even has its own Chamber of Commerce .

There are no mentions of possums or kingdoms in the lyrics, but we do hear a creepy story about a spooky walk around a lake.

In a 1995 interview with RIP magazine, Toadies lead singer Todd Lewis, who wrote the song, said: "It's just a story I heard long ago; it's just a really cool, eerie lake, and some stuff I heard and some stuff I just make up. I tend to do that. They dammed up this big river up there, and it's got all these spooky names like Hell's Gate. It's really cool."

Lewis went on to say that there was a real stalker in Tyler, Texas who became a folk hero: "I was down there for Thanksgiving, and after the family got through talking about who died and who's got cancer and all those things that families talk about, they started talking about this guy who was peeping in windows and started breaking into people's houses. He'd go out of his way to be seen, and everyone is like armed to the teeth, and he's like tapping on windows. The whole family was freaked out about it."
  • This is a very dark song with many possible interpretations. Here are a few:

It's about a serial killer who lures girls away by being really smooth.

It's about love or sex near the actual lake in Texas.

    It's about a vampire.

It's about the devil. (thanks, Michelina - New York, NY)
  • Toadies had the briefest possible stay on the US Top-40, nicking the chart at #40 with this song the week of November 18, 1995. The song made it thanks to airplay, which Billboard factored into the charts starting in 1991.

Toadies, and this song in particular, benefited from the boom in the "Modern Rock" or "Alternative" radio formats, which gave a good home to acts like Belly, Letters To Cleo and Blind Melon. Toadies toured with Bush for nearly a year to promote the Rubberneck album, which was their first major label release (Interscope/Atlantic). They made a second album, called Feeler, but it was rejected by the record company. Bass player Lisa Umbarger left the group, and they broke up soon after, orphaning their mid-'90s success. Toadies came back together in the '00s and released the album No Deliverance in 2008, which they followed with a new version of the previously shelved Feeler in 2010.
  • This was a surprisingly popular song with dancers at strip clubs, and there were even some local news reports in Texas about strippers using the song in their routines.
  • This song was used in the XBox 360 version of Guitar Hero 2, under the "Opening Licks" section. It is available from the start. (thanks, Matt - Labrador City, Canada)

  • Stephen Malkmus told NME that he isn't proud of the song's lyric, "Ecstasy feels so warm inside 'til five hours later I'm chewin', screwin' myself with my hand."

He added that the line isn't from personal experience. Instead, he was, "just speaking for the common man. I was embodying the state of mind and worldview of many young partiers at dawn."
  • The song was erroneously known as "Silence Kit" due to an ink splodge on the back of the album's artwork.

Give It To Me Strait Lyrics

Bartender I may sit here on this bar stool all night long
But I won't need much attention
I just need some time alone
So if you'll give me some quarters and a bottle of your best
You can just sit back and let the jukebox do the rest

    Give It To Me Strait
Sing "Am I Blue" while I sit here and cry
And tell me how my baby's gotten so good at goodbye
It's gonna take a fireman to put this old flame out
So come on give it to me Strait
    Before I come unwound

Let's start off nice and easy
Something like "If I Know Me"
And we'll work our way up slowly to "Fool Hearted Memory"
Yeah I've got all night long to sit right here and fall apart
So don't leave out one single song
I know 'em all by broken heart

    Give it to me Strait
    Sing "Am I Blue"
While I sit here and cry
And tell me how my baby's gotten so good at goodbye
It's gonna take a fireman to put this old flame out
So come on give it to me Strait
    Before I come unwound

    There ain't one country singer
That ain't good for a bad heartache
And for me there's nothing smoother
Than a good stiff shot of Strait

It's gonna take a fireman to put this old flame out
So come on give it to me Strait
    Before I come unwound
So come on give it to me Strait
    Before I come unwound

    Bomb
  • This song was inspired by the frequent IRA bombings in Ireland. The lyrics are intended to tell the story of a fellow who is just out shopping and ends up killed as an innocent bystander in an IRA bombing. Centuries of feuding between the Protestants and the Catholics have caused many deaths and severe injuries, not just to the people involved in the conflicts, but to innocent bystanders as well.
  • The song takes a cynical view of violence, as evident in the last two lines: "Of all the bravest stands in time/You stoop so low you'll never rise."
  • This song was featured on the soundtrack for the 1995 movie Tank Girl. (thanks, Sarah - Yuba City, CA)

    I'll Stand Lyrics

Oh, why you look so sad, the tears are in your eyes,
Come on and come to me now, and don't be ashamed to cry,
Let me see you through, 'cause I've seen the dark side too.
When the night falls on you, you don't know what to do,
Nothing you confess could make me love you less,

    I'll Stand by you,
I'll stand by you, won't let nobody hurt you,
    I'll stand by you

So if you're mad, get mad, don't hold it all inside,
Come on and talk to me now.
Hey there, what you got to hide?
I get angry too, well, I'm alive like you.
When you're standing at the cross roads,
And don't know which path to choose,
Let me come along, 'cause even if you're wrong

    I'll stand by you,
I'll stand by you, won't let nobody hurt you,
    I'll stand by you.
Baby, even to your darkest hour, and I'll never desert you,
    I'll stand by you.
And when, when the night falls on you baby,
You're feeling all a lone, you're wandering on your own,
    I'll stand by you.

I'll stand by you, won't let nobody hurt you,
I'll stand by you, baby even to your darkest hour,
    And I'll never desert you,
    I'll stand by you,

    I'll stand by you.
I'll stand by you, won't let nobody hurt you,
I'll stand by you, baby even to your darkest hour,
    And I'll never desert you
    I'll stand by you

    I'll Stand
  • Chrissie Hynde wrote this with Tom Kelly and Billy Steinberg, who have written many hit songs, including "True Colors," "Eternal Flame" and "Like A Virgin." Steinberg told us how they met:
"Tom and I never had a publisher, we both published ourselves. Jason Dauman was somebody who, for a commission, was willing to provide some of the service that a publisher would. He once said to me, 'Who would you like to collaborate with?' and it was sort of an annoyance to me. I didn't take him all that seriously, but almost facetiously I said, 'Prince, Bruce Springsteen and Chrissie Hynde.' I said those names because they were three of my favorite songwriters and he sort of took it seriously. He went off and I just thought, 'Well I got rid of him, didn't I.' Then a little while later he called me up and he said, 'Chrissie Hynde wants to write with you and Tom,' and I thought, 'Right.' So anyway, I get a phone call and this woman said, 'Billy, this is Chrissie Hynde,' and I thought somebody was playing with me or something. I couldn't imagine it, but then in a minute it was quite clear that Chrissie was on the other end of the telephone. Chrissie is a very complicated person, a very no-nonsense person especially when she doesn't know you. She was a little intimidating on the phone. The butterflies in my stomach were fluttering so much I could barely speak because I love The Pretenders. She said she'd like to get together and write some songs with Tom and me, and I went, 'Woo Hoo!' She came to Los Angeles and she was so determined. She said, 'I want to write a hit.' Over a period of about two weeks Tom and I wrote a handful of songs with her. The first one we wrote together was called 'Love Colors Everything.' Then we wrote 'Night In My Veins' which was also a hit single, and we wrote '977,' 'Hollywood Perfume' and 'I'll Stand By You'."
  • Ben E. King's song "Stand By Me" was a big influence on this.
  • Steinberg: "'I'll Stand By You,' like the other hits that Tom and I wrote, started out as a lyric that I had in a notebook. I had the title and the chorus lyric. Chrissie is a very, very strong songwriter in her own right. She's very ruthless, she would get out her pen or her pencil and I remember I was fascinated the way she would write in the notebook because she wouldn't write on the lines. I use a Mont Blanc fountain pen and I tend to write kind of neatly. She would just scribble across pages. Very few lines would fit on a page and they wouldn't stay on the line. I remember she would just take a pen and she would cross out any lines I had written that she didn't like, and usually the lines that she didn't like would be ones that were too tender or too poetic. She would toughen up stuff I'd written. On 'I'll Stand By You' she added lines and changed lines."
  • This was written based on the piano. Tom Kelly played the piano on the record.
  • Steinberg: "I remember when we wrote it I felt two things: I felt one, we had written a hit song and I felt two, a little sheepish that we had written something a little soft, a little generic for The Pretenders. Whereas 'Night In My Veins' really felt like a great Pretenders rocker, 'I'll Stand By You' felt a little generic. I know that Chrissie felt that way too to some extent. I don't think she really entirely embraced it to begin with, but she certainly does now because when she plays it live, it's one of the songs that gets the strongest response. It's done really well for her and for us." (Check out our Billy Steinberg interview.)
  • This song has returned to both the UK & US charts with different cover versions. In 2004 Girls Aloud achieved their second UK #1 with their version recorded for the annual BBC Children In Need charity telethon. Girl Aloud Sarah Harding explained in 1000 UK #1 Hits by Jon Kutner & Spencer Leigh that the fivesome "were drawn to the lyrics straight away, we've all been in situations where we have needed someone or been there for someone." In 2007 Carrie Underwood achieved the highest chart entry by an Idol contestant for a song never performed on the show in competition, when her version debuted in the Hot 100 at #6. Her record has since been taken by David Archuleta, whose single "Crush" flew straight into the US singles chart at #2.
  • Hynde admitted to Mojo feeling slightly disgusted after writing the tune. "When I did that song, I thought, Urgh this is s--t. But then I played it for a couple of girls who weren't in the business and by the end of it they were both in tears. I said, OK, put it out."

    A Tout Le Monde Lyrics

    Don't remember where I was
I realized life was a game
The more seriously I took things
    The harder the rules became
I had no idea what it'd cost
My life passed before my eyes
I found out how little I accomplished
    All my plans tonight
So as you read this know my friends
I'd love to stay with you all
Please smile when you think of me
    My body's gone that's all
    A Tout Le Monde
    A tout les amis
    Je vous aime
    Je dois partir
    These are the last words
    I'll ever speak
    And they'll set me free
If my heart was still alive
I know it would surely break
And my memories left with you
    There's nothing more to say
Moving on is a simple thing
What it leaves behind is hard
You know the sleeping feel no more pain
    And the living are scarred

    A Tout Le Monde
  • This song is often misinterpreted to be about suicide, as the lyrics can be heard as a suicide note.

On September 13, 2006, Kimveer Gill went on a shooting rampage at Dawson College in Montreal, eventually shooting himself. He was a fan of Megadeth and mentioned this song on his blog, which prompted Dave Mustaine, who wrote the song, to make this statement the next day: "Like everyone else, I am horrified and disgusted by the tragic events of yesterday. We will pray for everyone who has been hurt, and all the families that are suffering. 'A Tout Le Monde' is based on a dream I had, where my mother came back from heaven to say 'I love you.' It's about me talking to her again."
  • Mustaine: "We don't write music that has any kind of suggestion about taking one's life. It is more like, 'Hey, we have a problem, let's be part of the solution.'"
  • MTV banned the video because they thought it promoted suicide. They did show it after some special comments were added, explaining how many kids commit suicide every year in the US. This message appeared at the end of the video: "Suicide is not an answer. Get help." The woman and child in the video are Mustaine's wife Pam and son, Justis. (thanks, Dae - Paraparaumu, New Zealand, for all above)
  • Part of the chorus is in French. The translation: "To all the world, To all my friends, I love you, I have to leave." (thanks, Nia - Mesa, AZ)
