This is about Jayne Mansfield, a blonde bombshell who was a popular actress and pin-up girl in the '50s and '60s. She was often compared to Marilyn Monroe, and also died young. Mansfield was killed in a car accident when she was 34: "Now she's breakin' hearts in heaven."

Tracii Guns of L.A. Guns was in a band called Hollywood Rose which later became Guns N' Roses (Thus the "Guns" part of the name). After he left they kept the name.

The band's vocalist and lyricist, Oli Sykes, doesn't like football. The song's name comes from legendary gonzo journalist and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas author Hunter S Thompson. It was actually the title of his 2005 suicide note.

This features vocals by JJ Peters, the singer of Australian hardcore band Deez Nuts. Oli Sykes recalled to Kerrang!: "We all love that he is on that song, but we originally wanted Andrew W.K. to sing it. The lyrics, 'Party 'til you pass out. Drink 'til you're dead' was so like something he would sing, but we never got round to asking him."

"When we played the Warped Tour in 2010, we befriended him, and it did come out and sing it a couple of times, which is pretty sweet. Everytime I think about that song I think about him now."

Oli Sykes told Kerrang!: "It didn't take long to write – I wrote all the lyrics while we were actually in the studio in Sweden recording it. The lyrics are just about partying and being lads, it's not too much of a serious song – and it was written and recorded when I was drunk, which you can probably tell."

She is best known as a singer, but Jackie DeShannon is one of the most talented tunesmiths of her time - she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010. She wrote many of her own songs, including this one, which she composed with her younger brother Randy Myers (Jackie's real name is Sharon Lee Myers) and a Soul singer at her label (Liberty Records), Jimmy Holiday.

In our interview with Jackie DeShannon , she told the story: "My brother Randy was playing this little riff and I said, 'Gee, I really like that riff, that's great.' All of a sudden, 'Think of your fellow man, lend him a helping hand, put a little love in your heart,' came just like that. I owe some of that to my mom, because she was always saying that people should put a little love in their heart when things are not so good. I'd like to say it was very difficult, but it was one of those songs you wait a lifetime to write."

Jimmy Holiday's contribution came after Jackie and her brother started composing it, as he helped polish the song. Holiday, DeShannon and Myers went on to write Jackie's hits "Love Will Find A Way" (#40, 1969) and "Brighton Hill" (#82, 1970).

DeShannon recorded a demo of this song which she had a hard time beating in the recording session. In our interview, she recalled struggling to get the right feel. "After about eight hours we finally got it and I just felt that I had done probably one of my best vocals ever," she said. "But when I came back in to hear it somehow my vocal was erased. Somebody must have hit something. I called my mom and I said, 'You know what, I'm just heartbroken. I've probably done the best vocal ever - at least it felt to me that it was right on the button - and I have to go do it again.' So I went right back in there fast, before I lost the muse. When I got to hear the new vocal I felt that, of course, I wished I could have had the other one. But who's to say? Maybe this was the better vocal."

The song was released as the first single from the album in June of 1969, and it gained momentum when a radio station in Atlanta started playing it. In August, the New York radio station WABC made it a "Pick of the Week," and stations around the country jumped on it, sending the song to its peak chart position of #4 on August 30. Said DeShannon: "The airplay was great, and in those days if you had a record in rotation, that could be very good money. I was actually able to buy a car for my dad, and I bought a house for my parents."

19 years after this song was a hit for Jackie DeShannon, Annie Lennox and Al Green covered it for the 1988 film Scrooged. Their version reached #9 in the US and #28 in the UK and reached the Top 40 in five other countries.

Sand In My Shoes

Dido wrote this song with San Francisco songwriter Rick Nowels, with whom she previously collaborated with on the transatlantic hit, "White Flag."

This finds the singer reminiscing about a romantic encounter she had on holiday, having returned to the drudgery of everyday life. Dido commented to Canada.com : "A classic holiday romance song — that feeling where you go away, have this amazing time, feel like you've gone away forever and then you get back and nothing's changed and you're trying to recreate that feeling when you're back at home."

This was written by Raymond Jackson, Carl Hampton and Homer Banks, who were songwriters for Stax Records in Memphis, where many Soul artists like Otis Redding recorded. They were about to go to their favorite lunch spot, the Four Way Grill, when Jackson called out, "If you're ready, come go with me." The Bleeding

The lead single from Five Finger Death Punch's debut album, this was originally included on the band's first EP, Pre-Emptive Strike along with an acoustic version. The track peaked at #9 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.

When Ivan Moody auditioned to be the vocalist for Five Finger, this was the song he was asked to sing. So chronically shy was Moody, he had to perform with his back turned to the rest of the band.

The Bradley Scott-directed video was shot in Los Angeles on July 7–8, 2007. The clip features scream queen actress Danielle Harris, best known for her roles in the Halloween series. Also appearing was writer/director Sxv'leithan Essex, who also turned up in Five Finger Death Punch's video for "Never Enough," and directed the visual for "The Way of the Fist."

This is about Five Finger Death Punch vocalist Ivan Moody's ex-fianceé and is also about his former band Motograter. Moody said in a Blistering interview: "That song is a two-part song and it comes across as a relationship piece, which it is. Half of it is about my ex-fianceé who meant everything to me, so once Motograter had fell apart and then her and I dwindled apart it just took a huge part of my life. So a lot of that song was about me losing that love and then having to say that it was over and move on. The other half was written about Motograter, because that was the closest thing I’ve ever had to a real family and it took a huge part of my soul."

One time, at a Five Finger Death Punch show in Arizona, the girl who inspired the song showed up. Moody spoke about it saying, "When we performed in Arizona the girl who I wrote 'The Bleeding' for was at the show and that was the first time I had seen her in about a year and I almost broke into tears because it all came rushing back to me. I’m not one of those artists that just likes to get up on stage and drink beer, when I sing a song I like to take myself and the fans back to the place where I was when I wrote that song."

Simple Man

Shortly after Ronnie Van Zant's grandmother and Gary Rossington's mother died, they got together in Van Zant's apartment and started telling stories about them. Rossington came up with a chord progression, and Van Zant wrote the lyrics based on advice the women had given them over the years. They wrote it in about an hour.

Even though the lyrics state, "Sit beside me, my only son," Ronnie was not the only son. He had 2 younger brothers along with one older sister and one younger sister.

This appears on the soundtrack to the movie Almost Famous.

Skynyrd producer Al Kooper didn't like the way this was coming out, so the band recorded it without him and had him add his organ part later. He didn't think they should release it, but realized he was wrong when it went over so well with their fans.

When Skynyrd toured in 1987, they dedicated this to Van Zant.

The studio and live versions of this song are tuned to different keys. The studio is in Ab while the live is the key of A.

The Heavy Metal band Shinedown recorded an acoustic version. The Deftones also covered it on their B-Sides And Rarities CD.

Frontman Johnny Van Zant discussed this song in a track-by-track commentary to promote the band's 2010 CD/DVD Live From Freedom Hall. He said: "Well that's a great song and something that I think we all live by. I think anybody out there needs to respect their mother, and the words of their mother. It's mama talking to you in that song and I think it's probably one of my favorite's if not my favorite to do live. It's just a great song and that one stays in the set and the crowd always goes crazy on that one."

The song charted in the Hot 100 for the first time in May 2015. A version by Sawyer Fredericks, performed on the April 27, 2015 episode of The Voice, debuted at #71 the following week.

This became the anthem song for The Marshall Tucker Band, similar to "Free Bird" for Lynyrd Skynyrd. It was never a Top 40 hit, but was very popular on Album Oriented Radio (AOR) and continues to get a lot of airplay on Classic Rock stations.

The open in unusual - it starts with the picking of a guitar and the playing of a flute. Jerry Eubanks of the Marshall Tucker Band played the flute, giving the song a very distinctive sound - it's not a common instrument in the world of Southern Rock.

In 2007 Austin Carlile's mother passed away to Marfan Syndrome (a disorder of the bodies corrective tissues). When the of Mice & Men vocalist sat down to write a song to vent his emotions, it became a dedication to her memory, as well as a statement of how he hoped to make her proud, by living his life as an inspiration for others. Austin told Kerrang! magazine: "I wrote it for myself as a way to vent and express myself. It's made me want to write more stuff like that, to open up and be more real. Reading all the letters I get from fans, I've gone through a lot of that same stuff: bullying, depressive thoughts, not having any friends and living in an orphanage. These are things I went through and I can help others. I can be like a big brother, a mentor or guide."

The last place that Carlile lived with his mom was Second Street and Sebring Circle in Lehigh Acres, Florida. He told Kerrang!: "Everything that happened in the song happened while we were living there."

Carlile originally disliked this tune. He told Kerrang!: "The funny thing is, in the studio. The song's name was 'Austin Hates' because I didn't like it at all before I wrote the lyrics. But then, after I wrote them, I fell in love with it."
