Dark Lady

This was written by The Ventures keyboard player Johnny Durrill.

This is about a woman who visits a famous fortune teller. The fortune teller (the "dark lady") tells her to break up with her boyfriend. Later on, the shocked protagonist remembers where she smelt the fortune teller's perfume before: on her bed after a night with her lover. She returns to the dark lady with a gun and finds her beau making love to the fortune teller. In a split decision, she pulls the trigger and kills the dark lady.

Johnny Durrill: "I spent a week in his (Snuff Garrett, Cher's producers) office playing him songs, one of which Cher recorded. Later, when I was on tour in Japan with the Ventures, I was writing an interesting song. I telegraphed the unfinished lyrics to Garrett. He said to 'make sure the bitch kills him.' Hence, in the song both the lover and fortune teller were killed. That song became 'Dark Lady' which Cher cut; it went to number one in 1974. Platinum Blonde

This was one of five tracks from a 1975 demo recorded by Blondie. It was produced by Alan Betrock, the founder of New York Rocker, one of the primary organs of the American Punk scene. The song was first issued on the 1994 compilation The Platinum Collection.

The song was the first ever one that Debbie Harry wrote for Blondie, and it served as a mission statement. She told Mojo magazine: "I think as far as Blondie is concerned, I took reference from the silver screen. Blonde goddesses. All of them. Not just Marilyn, but Jean Harlow and Lana Turner and even Diana Dors and Jayne Mansfield. I think it was a conceived idea from Hollywood that registered in my brain as being something that would work in a band situation."

Throughout the song, references to geological formations and farming are repeated. The song could be interpreted to be about death or the decline of rock 'n' roll, but Neil says, "Thrasher was pretty much me writing about my experiences with Crosby, Stills & Nash in the mid '70s"

The great Canyon rescue episode probably refers to an episode of one of the mid '50s Westerns. Neil has said he enjoys sci-fi films and old Westerns.

This could reflect Neil's personal philosophy about life and music, and his emphasis on being true to his own heart and soul. In a 2003 Rolling Stone article, Neil said: "That's what I know how to do (make albums) and I do that OK. Sometimes I do it and people really like it. The album was recorded mostly live at San Francisco's Cow Palace, accompanied by Neil's perennial backing band, Crazy Horse. "Rust Never Sleep" references Neil's ongoing attempts at musical self-renewal so as to avoid becoming irrelevant, restless experimentation a hallmark quality of his music that has become almost synonymous with his name over the years.

The" dinosaurs" referred to in the song refer CSNY - something long dead and forgotten. More explicitly, the line goes on to state: "So I got bored and left them there, they were just dead weight to me. It's better on the road without that load."

Boom Clap

This song features on the soundtrack of the romantic comedy-drama movie The Fault in Our Stars. "The scene that ['Boom Clap'] is in is an uplifting moment in the film," XCX explained to Billboard magazine. "And while the song itself is very euphoric and enthusiastic about romance… it's about wanting to fall in love, but there's this hint of sadness in that, which I like."

Charli and Patrick Berger wrote this song in Stockholm. She explained the inspiration to Entertainment Weekly: "We had been listening to loads of French yé-yé pop and the Flying Lizards and Bow Wow Wow, and we were saying how all those songs have dumb, hooky, shouty choruses. They're all sort of childlike. So we wanted to make a song like that.

The song celebrates epic love. "Being totally immersed in passion and feeling really safe and really alone with that person," Charli explained to MTV UK. "Although I always hear a tinge of sadness in it, that song has quite an acute feeling."

The Sing J. Lee-directed video features Charli XCX traipsing through the Amsterdam city. The singer explores the same spots that were featured in The Fault in Our Stars movie.

Charli XCX wrote the song during the sessions that produced the tracks for her debut album True Romance. She penned the tune with Patrick Berger, her collaborator on "I Love It." It didn't make the final cut and was then offered to Hilary Duff to record.

XCX told MTV UK that Berger has worked with Hilary Duff before, and when the singer's people got in touch with them about her new record, she got very excited. "My number one project as a songwriter is to write for Hilary Duff, so when I heard about this, I was like, 'f---k! Are you serious?! This is my 'in!,'" she recalled. "I'm going to make a Hilary Duff album!' So we sent over 'Boom Clap', but they came back and were like, 'this isn't cool enough for Hilary."

"I was like, crushed," Charli added, sighing. "I thought I was a cool writer, but maybe I'm not. Hilary didn't want my song. What a life-ruiner."

Once Duff declined the offer, XCX decided to use the song as her contribution for The Fault in Our Stars.

If you think this song has a dumb chorus, you're right - at least according to Charli. She says that it is dumb, but some of the best pop songs have one-line, catchy choruses.

Charli XCX recorded a version of both this song and "Break The Rules" in Japanese to promote the Japanese release of Sucker. "Boom Clap's" onomatopoeic title stayed the same, but the English words elsewhere were translated. "I did it phonetically," Charli recalled to Digital Spy . "I don't actually remember it now; it was more just me repeating the sounds. But I'm very happy with it, I've always been inspired by Japan constantly, so I kind of wanted to do something for the Japanese fans."

This is an instrumental song that expresses musically the fear, terror, apprehension, and feeling of being overwhelmed. It also "describes" the army's military power. Genghis Khan was a warrior who led the Mongolian empire.

Iron Maiden bass player Steve Harris, who wrote this song, explained: "This was another song where there could have been a vocal melody on top, but it felt good as an instrumental. A vocal would have cluttered it up. Originally it was written to depict the feeling and sound of Genghis Khan's army going into battle. It felt better not to have any guitar solos on this track."

This was released as the B-side to the single for "Purgatory." It is the lowest charting Maiden single to date, and only went as far as #52 in the UK charts.

The 1998 album A Call to Irons: A Tribute to Iron Maiden featured a cover of this by Angel Corpse.

This is one of four instrumental Iron Maiden songs the band has released. Sheeran started writing for his sophomore album x in 2011, before the release of +. This minimalistic tune was the first song he came up with. He initially released an acoustic version on May 2, 2014 on his YouTube channel.

Sheeran wrote this for Alice, who was his girlfriend for several years when they were teenagers. She is the subject of many of the tracks on + and the pair eventually broke up amicably. Pet Shop Boy Neil Tennant was raised Catholic and the lyrics reflect his unfavorable view of the church. This caused a lot of controversy, but got the group plenty of attention and helped make the song a huge hit in the UK.

The ending stanza is sung in Latin and loosely translated it reads: "Father my father, please forgive me for I have sinned, it is my fault, it is my fault." (thanks, Nathaniel - Newark, NY, for above 2)

Tennant wrote the lyrics to get back at some of his teachers at his former school, St. Cuthberts. The teachers said some harsh things about him when the song was released. (thanks, Paul - Potters Bar, England)

Julian Mendelsohn reunited with Pet Shop Boys to produce and engineer most of the songs for the album after doing the same for the track "Suburbia" on the duo's debut album two years before. In a Sound on Sound interview, Mendelsohn explained his job on the Actually album:

"My role as a producer on that album was just getting it all recorded. I also made a few suggestions here and there - you know, 'We can get a better sound for this' or 'Try singing that part again.' In those days, Neil wasn't a great singer and he knew it. So, there was always a bit of work involved in getting his vocals right. He's improved a hell of a lot since then."

In a bid to keep himself focused and the songs fresh, Mendelsohn tried not to labor over any individual track too much, with the exception of "It's a Sin." He explained: "I remember describing a sound or a feel that I was after and sy[synthesizer/keyboard programmer] Andy Richards not quite understanding what I wanted. We were still there at midnight and he was saying, 'Well, what do you want?' My answer was, 'I want it like this, but I can't quite explain,' and there were a couple of times when we got fairly angry and frustrated with each other. I had this thing in my mind: 'I want it like that and I'm going to get it like that.'"

The thunder sound was created on a Roland keyboard.

The Pet Shop boys won a lawsuit against TV presenter Jonathan King after he accused them of stealing the melody from Cat Stevens' 1971 song "Wild World." King even recorded his own cover of that track to prove his point, but it flopped. The duo donated their out-of-court damages to charity.

Mary Jane's Last Dance

Mike Campbell is The Heartbreakers' guitarist. He told us how this came together: "That song took on a few shapes. It was written in my garage. I didn't write it, but we were jamming in the garage and Tom was playing one of my guitars. It was called 'Indiana Girl,' the first chorus was 'Hey, Indiana Girl, go out and find the world.' We liked the song and Rick Rubin suggested we cut it. It had actually been around for a while, just the basic riff and that chorus. We cut the song and Tom was singing the chorus, and he decided he just couldn't get behind singing about 'Hey, Indiana Girl,' so we went back and about a week later he came in and said 'I've got a better idea,' so he changed the chorus to 'Last dance with Mary Jane.' In the verse there is still the thing about an Indiana girl on an Indiana night, just when it gets to the chorus he had the presence of mind to give it a deeper meaning."

Petty has not said what this is about, but there are two common interpretations. It could be about Petty's divorce from his wife Jane, which happened a year before this was recorded. Another possibility is that it is about marijuana, as "Mary Jane" is slang for pot and the lyrics refer to killing the pain, which the drug is known for. Campbell offered this explanation: "My take on it is it can be whatever you want it to be. A lot of people think it's a drug reference, and if that's what you want to think, it very well could be, but it could also just be a goodbye love song."

Petty made some strange videos, and this was no exception. Tom played a mortician who takes home a corpse played by Kim Basinger. When he gets her home, he puts her in a wedding dress and dances with her. Then he puts her in a pickup truck and throws her into the ocean, and she opens her eyes as she sinks. It won Best Male Video at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Basinger was not the first choice for the video. Petty wanted Sharon Stone, but she didn't answer his request.

Petty played the guitar solo at the end after Campbell persuaded him to do it. Mike is known as an outstanding guitarist, but he thought Tom had a good sound going, so he told him to play a fuzzy sort of guitar solo. Says Mike, "He actually played a nice little bit at the end of that."

Campbell: "An interesting thing about that record, the same day we did the last overdubs, that guitar and a few little bits, we did a rough mix here at my house, just did it by hand. Then we went to 3 or 4 different studios over the next couple of weeks and tried to do a proper mix, and we could never beat that rough mix, so that was the mix we put out. It's an interesting track, it's very inaccurate, it's kind of greasy and loose. That day we just gelled and every time we mixed it we could clean up the sound and make it more posh, but it just didn't have the juice that one mix had." In 2006, The Red Hot Chili Peppers released "Dani California," which sounded very similar to this and was also produced by Rick Rubin. Petty showed no interest in suing the band, as they felt it was not malicious. The first eight bars of both songs sound similar, but the chords are different. In this song, the chords are "Am, G, D, Am" and in "Dani California," the chords are "Am, G, Dm, Am." Both of these chord progressions are very common in rock music. (thanks, Bert - Pueblo, NM)

The fourth single from Love in the Future, this is a song of devotion to Legend's fiancée Chrissy Teigen. The track was serviced to urban adult contemporary radio in the US on April 29, 2014.

The track was produced by Legend's long-term collaborator Dave Tozer with Frank Ocean's production partner James "Malay" Ho. Tozer described its instrumentation to SonicScoop : "This song is a real journey," he said. "It's a nice breather for where it is on the record. It's got a moody guitar to set the tone, then it blossoms open. Then there's this '80s Linn drum snare giving it power in the second chorus. Then the horns, and the Moog synth. There's this big, climactic bridge, then it comes down to a whisper with this mournful Moog theremin sound. Then it builds back up - it's got great dynamics."

Directed by Mishka Kornai, the song's music video celebrates the natural beauty of women from all walks of life. The clip opens and closes with Chrissy Teigen and among the other famous faces that appear are transgender Orange Is the New Black star Laverne Cox and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actress Tatyana Ali.

Legend explained regarding the inspiration for the clip: "When we shot the video, we wanted to examine the idea of what people see when they look in the mirror. We wanted to show all types of beauty and speak to the idea that each of them is special and beautiful."

November Rain

The lyrics and the video are based on a short story by Del James called Without You. The story is part of a collection called The Language Of Fear , which was brought back to market in 2008 after being out of print. The new version of the book contains an intro by Axl Rose, who wrote: "Del James has a personal knowledge of most of the situations he writes about, and has a love of the gutter from having been there." James contributed lyrics to two Guns N' Roses songs: "The Garden" and "Yesterdays," and has directed several music videos. (thanks, Dejaye - Wagga, Australia)

Written by Axl Rose, the original version of this song was 25-minutes long, and was edited down to 8:59. It is the longest ever Top 10 hit and contains the longest guitar solo in a Top 10 single.

Slash actually plays two guitar solos in the song. Rose put the song's lengthy gestation period down to opposition from Slash and Duff McKagan. (thanks, Joe - Boston, MA and Cole - Watertown, NY)

The video was directed by Andy Morahan, who had done the popular George Michael videos for "Father Figure" and "Faith," and worked with GnR on "Don't Cry" and "You Could Be Mine."

A huge production, the "November Rain" video cost over $1.5 million to make, but reaped rewards for the band, as it got a lot of play on MTV. It stars actress and model Stephanie Seymour, Axl Rose's girlfriend at the time. In the video, she and Axl get married with Slash serving as best man and the rest of the band in the front row. After the wedding, it starts raining and the next scene is Stephanie's funeral in the same church.

Slash (from Q magazine, July 2004): "We got into doing these huge production videos and by 'November Rain' it was too much, just too involved. At the end of the day it was a great video but that's when I started realizing that it was getting out of hand."

This won for best cinematography at the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards, where it also received a Video Vanguard award. Guns N' Roses performed this at the end of the show with Elton John on piano.

The albums Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II were released simultaneously. This was a bold move, but the band was huge and the albums both sold very well. When they were released, Use Your Illusion II was the #1 album in the US, followed by Use Your Illusion I. The last time an artist had the top two albums at the same time was in 1974, when two Jim Croce albums held the top spots shortly after his death.

The album was released in September 1991, but this came out as a single in February 1992.

Shannon Hoon from the group Blind Melon sang backup. Hoon, who died of a drug overdose in 1995, grew up in Lafayette, Indiana near Axl Rose.

Matt Sorum replaced Steven Adler as GnR drummer in 1990. A former session drummer and bandmate of Tori Amos, his classical training helped bring a more classical sensibility to the band, which is best heard on this song. In our interview with Sorum , he explained that the drum pattern came together after they had been rehearsing the song, and Axl and Matt found themselves in the studio enjoying take-out from Greenblatt's Deli. Axl, a big Elton John fan, put on the song "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me," which gave Matt an idea.

"I said, 'God, listen to the tom toms on that,'" Matt recalls. "And Axl goes, 'Yeah, that's cool. So epic.' I go, 'What if I use that sort of a phrase as pieces of the song, almost like a melody that would work into the song structure.'"

Discussing the orchestral elements in the song, Matt explained: "I worked on the arrangements for those songs, the way they broke down and the dynamics. The band wasn't really that dynamic when I joined. It was a rock band, like 'Go for it.' Just loud. 'When we're on, it's loud.' And I came from an orchestral upbringing and classical music - I was in wind ensemble. I sounded crazy to them: 'We need pianissimo instrumental right here and mezzo forte right here.' And they'd go, 'What?!?'

Pianissimo means 'quiet.' And here we're doing mezzo forte. That means 'medium loud.' Now, we're going to go double forte here, which means, Okay, go back to your regular volume. I would explain all these sections to the band, and I said, 'This needs to be a journey, you need to take people on a journey to this song.' So that's what we did on 'November Rain.'"

Axl Rose was working on this as early as 1983. Former L.A. Guns guitarist Tracii Guns said: "When we were doing that EP for L.A. Guns, like in 1983, he was playing 'November Rain' on piano. Way back then. It was the only thing Axl knew how to play, but it was his. He'd go: 'Someday this song is gonna be really cool.' And I'd go: 'It's cool now. But it's not done, you know.' And like anytime we'd be at a hotel or anywhere there'd be a piano, he'd just kinda play that music. And I'd go: 'When are you gonna finish that already, you know?' According to Matt Sorum, "November Rain," "Don't Cry" and "Estranged" were conceived as one song, and the three tracks form a trilogy of sorts. Sorum played the same drum fill throughout those three songs, and took some criticism for doing so - notably from former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy.

Sorum points out that this was intentional, a way of unifying the songs. "That was my part in tying enough songs together to make it one voice," he told us.

Slash revealed in his autobiography that an early 18-minute version of the song was recorded at a session with Nazareth guitarist Manny Charlton in 1986, before the sessions for Appetite For Destruction began.

The guy who crashes through the wedding cake around the 7-minute mark of the video is Riki Rachtman, host of the MTV show Headbangers Ball. He and Axl Rose were friends.

The first song to be made available from the Kooks' Listen album, it received its worldwide premiere on Zane Lowe's March 11 2014 BBC Radio 1 show. "Down" was released on April 20 via Virgin/EMI and was described as "a mission statement from a band that have rediscovered what they loved about making music in the first place."

The R&B-influenced song was written by the band's frontman Luke Pritchard and Hip-Hop pioneer Inflo, who co-produced Listen. Recording sessions were split between London and LA. "With this record we didn't do any rehearsing beforehand," Pritchard said. "I'd write a song with Inflo or on my own, put it up and we'd all play over it. There was a real freedom to the process."
