What's This Life For

A track from Creed's first album, Scott Stapp and Mark Tremonti wrote the song after hearing the news that one of Tremonti's best childhood friends had committed suicide. In our interview with Tremonti , he talked about the meaning: "It's a song about suicide and kids searching for that meaning of life. It's tough sometimes for kids in high school, junior high school, to go through a lot of the depression he went through that led him to commit suicide. So I wrote about that."

As Tremonti remembers it, he wrote the music and also the verse and chorus lyrics - Stapp came up with the bridge.

This became one of Creed's most popular songs, but it took a while to get there. The My Own Prison album was first released in April 1997 on an independent label called Blue Collar Records. It sold well enough in their home turf of Florida to get the attention of BMG subsidiary Wind-Up Records, which signed the band and brought in producer Ron Saint-Germain to remix it.

Wind-Up re-released the album and launched a promotional campaign, breaking the band nationally by distributing the title track to radio stations and commissioning a video, which did well on MTV. The next promotional single was "Torn," which was followed by "What's This Life For." By this time, the band was picking up traction on radio and the album was a top-seller.

In an effort to boost album sales, the Creed singles at this time weren't sold in the US, which made them ineligible for the Billboard Hot 100 chart. However, Billboard had another chart that perfectly suited Creed's sound: Mainstream Rock. In September 1998, "What's This Life For" became the band's first #1 on that chart, taking the top spot for six weeks. The first single from their follow-up album, Human Clay, was "Higher," which stayed at #1 for 17 weeks, longer than any other song in the chart's history to that point.

The video was directed by Ramaa Mosley , who also did Creed's "Higher" video and "Superman (It's Not Easy)" for Five For Fighting.

Striking landscapes are a hallmark of Creed videos, and this one is set in the desert plains, where we see the band performing. In other scenes, we see various disaffected folks trying to escape their cumbersome lives, which they do at the end of the clip, joining the band at the end where they exult under a rain shower as Scott Stapp sings, "We all live under the rain."

The video was shot in a desert near Joshua Tree National Park in California. In our interview with Mosley, she explained: "I had this tremendous fascination with weather and trying to capture this on film. Weather is very mysterious and powerful and I wanted to make a video that set men against the forces of nature. I wanted the video for Creed to feel that the music and the band had performed so passionately that a storm approached."

This was featured in the 1998 movie Halloween H20: 20 Years Later. A version of the video was made incorporating scenes from the film.

This song is the national anthem of the United States. The poem that formed the basis of the lyrics was penned in 1814 by Francis Scott Key, a 35-year-old lawyer who was sent to negotiate with the British in an attempt to gain the release of an American prisoner they were holding. On September 7, Key reached the British fleet and after a few days of negotiations, secured the release of the prisoner. However, the British planned to attack Baltimore and would not release the Americans until after the battle. On September 13, the British launched a fierce bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore that lasted throughout the night, an event Key witnessed from the deck of a US truce ship. The next morning (in the "dawn's early light") Key saw the Americans take down the battle-torn US flag at the fort and replace it with a larger one. This inspired him to write down notes for his famous poem, which he finished upon his return to Baltimore the evening of the 16th. Key later described the event: "Through the clouds of the warthe stars of that banner still shone in my view, and I saw the discomfited host of its assailants driven back in ignominy to their ships. Then, in he hour of deliverance, and joyful triumph, my heart spoke; and 'Does not such a country and such defenders of their country deserve a song?' was its question." Key's poem was published on September 17, 1814, the day after he returned to Baltimore. The poem was sung to the music of a popular British drinking song called "To Anacreon in Heaven" (also known as "The Anacreontic Song"), which has been attributed to John Stafford Smith.

Before 1931, the US National Anthem was "My Country 'Tis Of Thee."

"The Star Spangled Banner" was recognized for official use by the United States Navy in 1889 and the White House in 1916. It got more attention when it was played during the seventh-inning stretch at Game 1 of the 1918 World Series between the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs. World War I was raging on, and when the band at the ballpark played the song, the players faced the flag and stood at attention. The fans did likewise, and this ritual was repeated for the rest of the Series. In ensuing years, the song was often played at baseball games as a show of patriotism. The song gained supporters, and on March 3, 1931 it was made the US National Anthem by a Congressional resolution.

The flag that was raised over Fort McKenry on September 16, 1814 is considered the Star Spangled Banner. It measures 42 by 30 feet and was made by Mary Pickersgill. The American officers wanted a huge flag so that the British would have no trouble seeing it in the distance and know that the Americans were not defeated. The flag is displayed in the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of American History in Washington, DC.

The song is hard for amateurs to sing, because of its extended vocal-range requirements. And among the professional singers who have the vocal finesse and range to "nail" all of the high notes, many often forget or stumble over the lyrics - one reason why the song is frequently prerecorded and lip-synched for public performances.

The song consists of four verses, but it is very rare to hear any but the first performed. One poll showed that 61% of Americans don't know all of the words to the song. Of those who claim to know all the words, only 39 percent know what comes after "Whose broad stripes and bright stars."

Like the British national anthem "God Save The Queen," the song is one of the few national anthems of the world without a country's name mentioned in the lyrics.

In the US, this is played before most professional sporting events. Many famous and not-so-famous musicians have performed it before football, basketball, hockey and baseball games. Sometimes kids sing it, and celebrities are occasionally asked to sing it with disastrous results. Sprinter Carl Lewis did a painfully bad version, but perhaps no version of the song has generated more ill-will than comedian Roseanne Barr's version sung at a San Diego Padres-Cincinnati Reds doubleheader in July of 1990. It launched more than patriotic fireworks... it generated a veritable firestorm of truculent criticism. Barr's version was called "disgraceful" by then-President George Bush and dubbed "The Barr-Strangled Banner" by the press. More than 25,000 fans heard her attempted belt out of the song transformed into a screeching, horrible performance. When they booed and jeered, Roseanne added insult to comedic injury by grabbing her crotch and spitting onto the field in a misguided attempt to imitate what ballplayers do. The fans didn't think it was funny at all. The San Diego Padres switchboard lit up with more than 1,000 angry calls, and Roseanne reportedly received multiple death threats owing to her disastrous rendition.

At the original Woodstock in 1969, Jimi Hendrix did a famous performance of this song. He was the last act of the festival and was scheduled to close the show on Sunday night, but he didn't take the stage until 8 am Monday morning. Of about 500,000 people who were there over the weekend, only about 30,000 were left, and many of them remember waking up to this song. Jimi did an extended version on his guitar which was very unorthodox and caused some controversy among people who felt he was desecrating the song. He had been playing this version for about a year, beginning as part of a guitar solo he played during "Purple Haze." When he played southern states in the US, he was often warned not to play it because the locals made threats against him, but Jimi always played it anyway. He tried to record his version for an album, but was never happy with the results in the studio. After he died, engineer Eddie Kramer mixed a version from Jimi's studio takes which was released on the album Rainbow Bridge, but his Woodstock performance is by far his most famous version of the song.

Hendrix' version can be seen as an anti-war song about the situation in Vietnam. Halfway through the song, Hendrix imitates the sounds of bombs dropping, machine gun fire and people singing. His version was the first song played when a propaganda radio station called "Radio Hanoi" went on the air broadcasting to American troops serving in Vietnam in an effort to destroy their morale and convince them to desert. A controversial Spanish-language version, "Nuestro Himno," was released on 28 April 2006, just days before nationwide immigration-law reform demonstrations on May 1, 2006. Public reaction was divided. "I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English," said President George W. Bush.

"Nuestro Himno" is not the first Spanish-language version of the The Star-Spangled Banner to have been published. The United States Department of State's website shows other Spanish-language versions of it, including "Himno nacional - La Bandera de Estrellas," copyrighted in 1919. Another multilingual version was released on May 16, 2006: performing as Voices United for America, 10 singers performed the song in Italian, Spanish, Swedish, Bulgarian, German, Arabic, Japanese, Tagalog, Korean, and English. The song was recorded to raise awareness of House Resolution 793, which states that the National Anthem should be sung only in English.

Other notable moments in Star Spangled Banner history:

Jose Feliciano sings a slow, Jazzy version at Tiger Stadium before Game 5 of the 1968 World Series. It was the first time artistic liberties were taken with the song preceding a major sporting event, and it created a huge controversy. Many Americans felt he defiled the song, and by extension, America, but Feliciano - a native of Puerto Rico - explained that he was simply expressing his love for the United States with feeling. His performance was released as a single and reached #50.

Marvin Gaye's soulful rendition at the 1983 NBA All-Star game the year before his death. Back in 1968, Gaye sang the National Anthem at Game 4 of the World Series - the game before Feliciano. Gaye was asked to keep the "Motown Influence" to a minimum, and sang that one straight, but at the All-Star Game, held at the Los Angeles Forum (where the Lakers played), Gaye walked out to a beat - a major departure from tradition. Gaye put the arrangement together with his musical director Gordon Banks that weekend, and showed up at the Forum shortly before the performance. Lakers management feared for the backlash, but the fans in attendance cheered wildly. This version was the first song played on VH1 when the network went on the air on January 1, 1985.

Whitney Houston's performance at the 1991 Super Bowl when the US was battling the first Gulf War. Her performance was lip-synched, but was released as a single and sold about 750,000 copies.

Steven Tyler changes the words from "Home of the brave" to "Home of the Indianapolis 500" at the 2001 race. The ad-lib didn't go over well and Tyler apologized.

In the Disney/Pixar movie Cars, a funny scene recurs when an an army jeep raises a flag in the morning to this tune, while next door a hippy micro-bus plays the Jimi Hendrix version. (thanks, Mike - Mountlake Terrace, WA)

A 2008 Harris Interactive survey revealed that 67% of Americans know all the words to this song, up from 61% in 2004. Folks in the Midwest and Northeast were more likely to know the words. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

The song has charted three times, all from performances at sporting events. Jose Feliciano's version checked in at #50 in 1968, Whitney Houston's made #20 in 1991, and Jennifer Hudson's performance at the Super Bowl in 2009 nicked the charts at #98. (thanks, Bertrand - Paris, France)

Billy Joel sang this at the 1989 Super Bowl, and when asked about the experience in a 1998 interview with Uncut, he said: "It was OK. Between you and me, it's not a very good song, nobody can hit the high notes. They asked me to do it, and I thought it was a good way of getting Super Bowl tickets."

Surprisingly, Joel sang it again for the 2007 game.

This Celtic tune on how love morphs with time was inspired by Amos' marriage to English sound engineer Mark Hawley whom she wed on February 22, 1998. She told Radio.com : "Well, first of all, my husband is a muse for me. Mark, he's very quiet. He's British, rides a motorcycle, supports Arsenal, and the last thing I think he ever thought would be happening to him is that some woman would be talking about him, globally. Silent Lucidity

Written by Queensrÿche guitarist Chris DeGarmo (who left the band in 1998), this is a song that deals with a person having a lucid dream. A lucid dream happens when you are aware that you are dreaming, and can control parts of it. DeGarmo got the idea from a book called Creative Dreaming , which explains how to tap into your subconscious mind and make like Leonardo DiCaprio in Inception. DeGarmo told Metal Edge in 1990: "Dreams tend to recur. Very often you have the same images, and it's being used in therapy, to confront the image in your dream. In a lifetime the average person spends about 4 ½ years in a vivid hallucination of the subconscious. You're doing things like flying, walking through walls - it's so intense. People can experience incredible physical sensations during dreaming."

In our interview with Queensrÿche's lead singer Geoff Tate, he said: "I love that song. I think it's a beautiful, beautiful piece. And although I didn't write it, I had a lot to do with shaping the destiny of that track through my melodic contributions and the way I sang it, and also in the mixing of the song and that kind of thing.

It had a strange beginning. It started out as simply just acoustic guitar and voice. And it wasn't until we were almost finished with the record, just in the last week of working on the record, that we added all the other instrumentation to it.

In fact, our producer (Peter Collins) didn't really want to put it on the record because he didn't think it was that well-developed as an idea. He was actually putting his foot down at one point saying, "No, I think you should come up with another song. You only have so many songs for the record, I don't think you should put that on the record." I think it's a good idea that he said that because it inspired Chris DeGarmo and I to really buckle down and finish the song and actually make it into what it is."

A piece of classical music is incorporated into this song: Brahm's "Lullaby" can be heard starting at 5:26, played by a cello.

Queensrÿche has had a long and illustrious career, but this is their only song to crack the Hot 100 in America. They fared better on the UK charts, where they placed six songs in the Top-40.

Dispatch's vocalist and guitarist, Chad Urmston, told us that this song is even more relevant now than it was in 1998: "It's more relevant today than it was when I wrote it. I've always been fascinated by war and been lucky enough not to have the hands in experience. Urmston told us this song was inspired by "a summer of playing Hendrix's "Castles Made of Sand† constantly."

In The Best of Dispatch, Chad Urmston explains: "This was our anti-war song. Although it was primarily based on the Civil War, the message was not confined to that particular conflict. We were too young to be directly involved in the Gulf War; nevertheless, the sense of a troubled history rings loud in the heads of young men who grow up listening to grandfathers or fathers recount war stories. The crowd response to this song always blew us away. Some said it had a 'Castles Made of Sand' feel - any reference to Hendrix we took gladly. We recorded the song up in the northeast kingdom on borrowed instruments. Our hazy-eyed hairball engineer swayed like a derelict wrecking ball over the console like a played-out carnie with nothing to show for a lifetime of swindling. His down-to-the-filter cigarette wandered listlessly with a skeletal droop of ash as he leaned on his crippled office chair teasing gravity. He ended up giving in to his heavy eyes and passing out on the couch with his feet up, still holding the cigarette as Brad and I took turns pressing the 'record' and 'locate' buttons." Christmas Canon

The base of "Christmas Canon" is Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D major, which has been sneaking its way into Pop music for years. The Bee Gees borrowed the harmony for their debut hit "Spicks And Specks" in 1966 and, according to music producer Pete Waterman, Kylie Minogue's 1988 single "I Should Be So Lucky" was also based on Canon in D.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra added new lyrics and melodies to the piece for "Christmas Canon" with strings and piano accompaniment for a traditional sound. Later, they added their signature rock edge for "Christmas Canon Rock" on 2004's The Lost Christmas Eve.

A.D.I.D.A.S. Song Chart

The title of the song stands for "All Day I Dream About Sex." It has nothing to do with the sporting goods company, although it is a common misperception that this is what "Adidas" stands for. The company is named after it's founder, Adi Dassler.

A minor radio hit, this song helped Life is Peachy, Korn's second album, debut at #3 on the Billboard albums chart. "A.D.I.D.A.S." was also the band's first song to nick the Billboard Hot 100, bubbling under at #113 (Korn's popularity was never well-represented on these charts). All this led to an appearance on the 1997 Lollapalooza tour, which helped cement Korn's status as a group with mass appeal.

Korn's songs are band compositions, with lead signer Jonathan Davis writing the lyrics. On this song, he takes a self-deprecating look at his sexual prowess, pointing out that most of his action happens in his mind.

This features a brief appearance by lead singer Jonathan Davis' son Nathan, at the time a newborn. He can be heard going, "ehhhhh!"

While the song is not about the sportswear company, the band was often clad in Adidas gear. And while Run–D.M.C. parleyed their Adidas song into an endorsement deal, Korn seemed content to wear the stripes for free.

Their allegiance shifted, however, in 1998 when the band signed a six-figure deal to promote Puma, who was looking to make inroads with Korn's demographic: kids who swag out in athletic wear. Some fans saw this as selling out, with the band turning their back on Adidas, but there was very little blowback from the deal, and Korn made no secret that they were cashing in. As part of the deal, Puma used the Korn song "Freak on a Leash" in commercials. The Adidas/Puma rivalry goes way back: Puma was founded by Rudolf Dassler, the brother of Adidas founder Adi Dassler.

The Puma deal didn't last long: in 2001, Korn traded their felines for chevrons, signing a deal with Pony, which also had Staind and Limp Bizkit on their roster. Pony even made kilts and custom shoes for Davis to wear on stage.

The music video, directed by Joseph Kahn, opens with the aftermath of a car accident that killed all the band members. They're taken to the morgue where we find out that frontman Jonathan Davis wears women's underwear. Kahn started out directing rap videos and saw this video as a turning point in his career. He told Videostatic : "When I finally got a rock video like Korn, it was fun to take my slick hip hop sensibility and turn it loose on angry white guys. I guess it shocked people."

Joel wrote this for his wife as a Valentine's Day present because he couldn't afford chocolate or flowers.

This was released as the B-side of the "Piano Man" single.

When you ask most songwriters if there are any cover songs they particularly despise, they usually dodge the question, since these covers put money in their pockets. Joel, however, gave an honest answer when asked this question by Uncut magazine in 1998. Said Joel: "Helen Reddy once cut something of mine, a song called 'You're My Home,' which wasn't great. I did it at a gig once and introduced it sayin,' 'This is a song of mine Helen Reddy cut... to pieces.' Turns out her husband or her manager was in the audience, and they were talkin' about suing me. Then Helen got in touch and said she was never recording one of my songs again, and I was like, 'D'you promise?' Kind of a smart-ass reply – maybe I shoulda just shut up. I gotta let these things go, it shouldn't bother me. I mean, I hear my stuff in elevators and I think somebody actually went to the trouble of putting together this really trite arrangement between jingle sessions. Loverboy Song Chart

Carey wrote the lyrics, in which she sings about a guy who takes care of her - a "Sugar Daddy." Carey was married to Sony executive Tommy Mottola from 1993-1998.

This was Carey's first single released by Virgin Records. She left Sony in 2001 and signed a 5 album deal with Virgin for $80 million. It didn't work out well, and in early 2002, Virgin paid Carey $28 million to break the contract and leave the label. Later that year, she signed with Island/Def Jam, where she released her next album, Charmbracelet.

When it was first released, this didn't chart, so Virgin Records responded by cutting the price of the single to 49 cents, which ensured its chart success. They did not want their first single with Carey to be a flop.

Carey had a nervous breakdown a few weeks after this was released. She had just finished a tour to promote her first movie, Glitter, when she had to be hospitalized.

A remix featuring rappers Ludacris and Da Brat is included on the album.

This samples the 1984 Cameo hit, "Candy." Larry Blackmon, the lead singer of Cameo, is in the video. Carey wanted to sample "Firecracker" by The Yellow Magic Orchestra on this, but her label couldn't get the rights to it in time and "Candy" was used instead.

This opens Side 2 of Led Zeppelin II and goes right into "Livin' Lovin' Maid (she's just a woman)" on the album. Radio stations usually play them together, but "Maid" was never performed live by Led Zeppelin.

A crowd favorite, Led Zeppelin sometimes opened live shows with it.

At concerts, Jimmy Page would stretch out the guitar solo and incorporate bits of other songs, like "Greensleeves," "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)," and Bach's "Bouree in C minor."

Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, and John Paul Jones performed this at the Atlantic Records 40th anniversary concert in 1988 with Jason Bonham sitting in on drums for his late father.

Jimmy Page's legendary guitar solo on this song inspired a young Eddie Van Halen to create his "tapping" technique after he saw Led Zeppelin perform live at the Long Beach Arena in 1972, which can be heard on the CD How The West Was Won.

Page's unaccompanied solo is pitched slightly higher than the rest of the song. The guitarist explained to Guitar World in 1998: "The interesting thing about the solo is that it was recorded after we had already finished 'Heartbreaker' – it was an afterthought. That whole section was recorded in a different studio and it was sort of slotted in the middle."

Eddie Kramer, sound engineer on Led Zeppelin II, told Guitare & Claviers in 1994 how he ended up working on the album:

"I met Page for the first time in Pye studios when I was working on sessions of The Kinks. Page had earned a certain reputation as a studio guitarist. I also worked with John Paul Jones on a few sessions, and we became friends. Jones was a brilliant musician. He wrote arrangements for chord orchestras and he could play many instruments extremely well. Before I left England to work with Jimi Hendrix at Record Plant studio in New York, in April 1968, Jonesy had invited me at his place to have me listen to a few demos of his new group, Led Zeppelin. I remember it sounded very heavy, and I was surprised that Jimmy Page played guitar because I didn't know they were friends. Jonesy was very proud of John Bonham, an ex-mason from the north of England who could hit it hard on the drums, as well as of Robert Plant, their wild singer. While I wasn't convinced by the name they had chosen, I wished them good luck. Then in '69, I was working at Electric Lady studios when I received a call from Steve Weiss, Jimi's right-hand man, saying that Led Zeppelin was in town. Page called later to tell he wanted I help him release what they had recorded and to make a few more tracks. Led Zeppelin had been a major success for Atlantic and they were urging Jimmy to finish the second album. Their schedule however wasn't very arranging. Dylan recorded this in New York City with a talented group of studio musicians including Al Kooper and Charlie Daniels. Ron Cornelius, who played guitar on these sessions, told us that Dylan would play down the song, but as soon as they started recording he would play it in a completely different tempo, which threw off the musicians but forced them to play to their strengths. No Doubt lead singer Gwen Stefani sang on this, making it into a duet running 1:57; she used to go out with Sublime lead singer Brad Nowell. On the Sublime: Stories, Tales, Lies & Exaggerations DVD, Stefani explained that Nowell wrote this in the studio and did his vocal in one take. (thanks, Vanessa - Covina, CA)

This was recorded before either Sublime or No Doubt were famous. Both groups rose to fame in the mid-'90s on the Southern California punk scene that also featured Green Day and the Offspring and was fathered by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

This is based on a popular Jamaican song called "She's Mine" by the dancehall singer Barrington Levy. Sublime recorded it as a tribute to Levy, changing the lyrics but keeping the music pretty much intact. After Sublime lead singer Brad Nowell died, their bass player and drummer formed the Long Beach Dub All-Stars, and recorded a version of this song with Levy. (thanks, Mitch - Colton, CA)

Robbin' The Hood was Sublime's second album, released on their independent label, Skunk Records. This song was a hit with college radio, but Sublime didn't break through to the mainstream until their next (self-titled) album, which was released in 1996 after they signed with MCA Records.

An acoustic version appears on Bradley Nowell & Friends, released in 1998. It's just Brad and a guitar.
