Linger

Cranberries guitarist Noel Hogan wrote the music for this song before Dolores O'Riordan joined the band. Originally, it had lyrics written by the group's first singer Niall Quinn. When O'Riordan auditioned for the band, she had some ideas for the song, and after she was hired, she wrote her own set up lyrics, turning it into a song of regret and based on a soldier she once fell in love with. The emotional, girlie sound was a huge departure for the band, but wildly successful: the song got lots of airplay from radio stations looking for an alternative to rap or grunge, and MTV put the video in heavy rotation. The Cranberries became one of the best-selling bands of the mid-'90s.

The Cranberries are an Irish band, but this song didn't get much attention in their home country. Their first single was "Dreams," released in the UK as the lead single from the album in 1992. It didn't chart, and "Linger" was released as the follow-up, cracking the UK charts at #74 for a week in February 1993. In June, the band began touring in America as the opening act for The The and the song began a slow climb as group gained recognition. It wasn't until February 12, 1994 that "Linger" reached its peak position of #8 on the US charts. A week later, the reissued single topped out at #14 in the UK.

Dolores O'Riordan performed this song in the 2006 Adam Sandler movie Click. In the film, Sandler's character has a remote control that can take him back in time. When his wife reminisces about their first kiss, she asks if he remembers the song that was playing. Sandler uses the remote, goes back to the memory, and discovers that "Linger" was playing.

The movie appearance was a big deal for O'Riordan, who had a bit of a breakdown in the late '90s and a lot of time in the ensuing years raising three children and recovering emotionally from the travails of stardom - she was just 18 when she joined the band and ill-equipped for the sudden celebrity. She was considering a return to music when Sandler approached her about being in the movie. She released her first solo album in 2007.

The video for this song is a tribute to Jean-Luc Goddard's film Alphaville. In one of the rooms of the hotel, a silent film is being shown which features 1950s stripper Blaze Starr. (thanks, Ekristheh - Halath)

Smells Like Teen Spirit Song Chart

Kurt Cobain wrote this song for Nirvana; it came together in a jam session when he played it for the band. He said: "I was trying to write the ultimate pop song. I was basically trying to rip off The Pixies."

Kathleen Hanna, the lead singer of the group Bikini Kill, gave Cobain the idea for the title when she spray painted "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his bedroom wall after a night of drinking and spraying graffiti around the Seattle area. In his pre-Courtney Love days, Cobain went out with Bikini Kill lead singer Tobi Vail, but she dumped him. Vail wore Teen Spirit deodorant, and Hanna was implying that Cobain was marked with her scent.

Hanna explained that early in the night, she was Cobain's lookout as he spray pained "God Is Gay" on the wall of a religious center that they believed was posing as an abortion clinic and telling women they would go to hell if they aborted their child. They got quite inebriated that night, and Hanna said, "We ended up in Kurt's apartment and I smashed up a bunch of s--t. I took out a Sharpie marker and I wrote all over his bedroom wall - it was a rental so it was really kind of lame that I did that. I passed out with the marker in my hand, and woke up hung over." Six months later she got a call from Cobain, asking her if he could use what she wrote on the wall for a lyric. Said Hanna, "I thought, how is he going to use 'Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit as a lyric?"

Cobain didn't know it when he wrote the song, but Teen Spirit is a brand of deodorant marketed to young girls. Kurt thought Hanna was complimenting him on his rebellious spirit, as someone who could inspire youth. Sales of Teen Spirit deodorant shot up when this became a hit, even though it is never mentioned in the lyrics.

This was the first "Alternative" song to become a huge hit, and in many ways it redefined the term, as "alternative" implies lack of popularity and the song was embraced by the mainstream. In an effort to save the label for acts like Porno For Pyros and Catherine Wheel, some industry folk referred to the genre as "Modern Rock," which became a common radio format. "Alternative" became more of a catchall for music played by white people that didn't fit the pop or country formats, and Nirvana quickly became a "Classic Alternative" band.

With this track, Nirvana helped ignite the "grunge" craze, which was characterized by loud guitars, angst-ridden lyrics, and flannel. Grunge was a look and sound that was distorted and emotive, led by bands coming out of the Northwest. Pearl Jam and Soundgarden were other top grunge bands of the era. Cobain would often dismiss the term as a meaningless label when asked about it in early interviews, but their bass player Krist Novoselic explained that it was a growling, organic guitar sound that defined it.

Cobain said he wrote this song because he was feeling "disgusted with my generation's apathy, and with my own apathy and spinelessness." This feeling of detachment is what led to lyrics like "Oh well, whatever, nevermind." Krist Novoselic added: "Kurt really despised the mainstream. That's what 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was all about: The mass mentality of conformity."

The video was a huge hit on MTV. The concept was "Pep Rally from Hell," and it was shot at Culver City Studios in California on August 17, 1991, directed by Samuel Bayer, who was a 1987 graduate of the New York City School of Visual Arts. The kids were recruited at a show the band played two days earlier at The Roxy Theater in Los Angeles, where flyers were handed out saying, "Nirvana needs you to appear in their upcoming music video. You should be 18-25 year old and adopt a high school persona, i.e. preppy, punk, nerd, jock. Be prepared to stay for several hours. Come support Nirvana and have a great time."

The shoot took more like 12 hours, with the extras ordered to sit in the bleachers and look bored while the song played over and over. Said Bayer: "Nobody wanted to be there for more than a half hour, and I needed them for 12 hours. By the 11th hour when the band had had it with me and the kids were so angry with me, they said, 'Can we destroy the set?'" Bayer let the kids come down and form a mosh pit, and with all that pent-up energy they proceeded to smash up the set. This impromptu and genuine destruction provided a nice finale for the clip.

The video was inspired by the movie and song Rock And Roll High School by the Ramones, and was also influenced by a 1979 movie called Over the Edge, which was a favorite of Cobain and showed rebellious kids destroying a high school.

According to Bayer, Cobain was getting very frustrated with the shoot, but Bayer needed another take. Cobain channeled his frustration into the performance that you see near the end of the video, where he is screaming and mashing his face near the camera. It was great acting trigger by his real anger.

Bayer did the first edit of the video , which Cobain didn't like - he used a principal character in a lot of shots and cut it too literal, with the music synching up to the playing. Cobain worked with him to recut the video and make it much more surreal, inserting his crazy look as the second to last shot, and making sure that for his guitar solo, his hands were in the wrong place on the guitar.

The girls who played the cheerleaders in the video were originally supposed to be very fat and unattractive (Cobain's idea). The Director Samuel Bayer did not like this idea, but still allowed the cheerleaders to have "sleeve" tattoos and the symbol for anarchy on their shirts. He says he recruited them from a local strip club, which helps explain their unorthodox cheers. (thanks, Chris - Louisville, KY)

Weird Al Yankovic did a parody of this called "Smells Like Nirvana." He shot his video in the same gym with the same janitor, but in his video, the janitor was wearing a tutu. Cobain said he was flattered by the parody: "I loved, it, it was really amusing." (thanks, Peter - Montreal, Canada)

The distinctive bridge was originally at the end of the song. Producer Butch Vig had them move it to the middle.

A lot was made of Cobain being a spokesperson for Generation X when this song became a hit. Cobain responded by saying, "I don't have the answers for anything. I don't want to be a f--king spokesperson."

Producer Butch Vig explained, "That ambiguity or confusion, that's the whole thing. What the kids are attracted to in the music is that he's not necessarily a spokesman for a generation. He doesn't necessarily know what he wants but he's pissed. It's all these things working at different levels at once. I don't exactly know what 'Teen Spirit' means, but you know it means something and it's intense as hell."

The line "Here we are now, entertain us" was something Cobain used to say when he entered a party.

In a sign of the cultural apocalypse, the February 20, 1992 issue of Rolling Stone magazine featured the cast of the TV show Beverly Hills 90210 with the tag line "Smells Like Teen Spirit," turning Kurt Cobain's diatribe against the culture of conformity into a convenient headline for a story about a TV series about rich kids. For a while, MTV refused to air the video. When they finally did, it was on their alternative show 120 Minutes. When the song became a hit, the video went into hot rotation.

The album cover shows a baby swimming toward a dollar bill. Cobain and Nirvana bass player Krist Novoselic had seen a documentary on underwater birth and wanted to use that image on the cover. Pictures of babies being born underwater were too gross, so they hired a photographer to take some underwater shots during a water babies class. The baby they chose was Spencer Elden, who was 4 months old at the time.

At many of their later shows, Nirvana did not play this song, helping root out the people coming just to hear a hit.

Courtney Love deliberated a long time before allowing this to be used in the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge. Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, who along with Love control the Nirvana catalog, claimed Love was trying to get the title role in the movie, which went to Nicole Kidman.

The song was later used in the 2011 movie The Muppets (where it is performed to a captive Jack Black by The Muppet Barbershop Quartet), and in the 2015 film Pan, where it is sung by a large group of rebellious child slaves. It's use in this last film was, er... panned by Entertainment Weekly, which wrote, "The song's satirical lyrics make an already gauche movie even dorkier."

The opening guitar part is a small variation on the main riff of Boston's "More Than A Feeling." This was noted by a Rolling Stone magazine writer years later, but not as an accusation of plagiarism. Dave Grohl recalled to Mojo magazine March 2011: "Teen Spirit definitely established that quiet/loud dynamic thing that we fell back on a lot of the time. It did become that one song that personifies the band. But the video was probably the key element in that song becoming a hit. People heard the song on the radio and they thought, 'This is great,' but when kids saw the video on MTV they thought, 'This is cool. These guys are kinda ugly and they're tearing up their f--king high school.' So I think that had a lot to do with what happened with the song.

But do I think it's the greatest single of all time? Of course not! I don't even think it's the greatest Nirvana single. And compared to Revolution by The Beatles or God Only Knows by The Beach Boys?! Give me a break! Smells like Teen Spirit was a great moment in time… but there's better."

A version by Miley Cyrus performed by the pop singer on her Gypsy Heart tour topped Rolling Stone's 2011 reader list of the top 10 Worst Cover Songs of All Time. It was so bad that it even outranked Britney's much-maligned version of "I Love Rock and Roll!"

Tori Amos did a popular cover of this song in 1992 that Nirvana sometimes played as their introduction music when they took the stage.

Amos was on tour when Cobain died in 1994 and performed her version two days later at a show in Dublin. Patti Smith also recorded the song for her covers album Twelve.

The song was re-released as a limited edition 7-inch vinyl single in December 2011 for an online campaign to get it to the Christmas number one in the UK Singles Chart. However, the track only reached #11 - four places lower than the peak originally scaled by the song 20 years previously.

The band's producer, Butch Vig, heard this song for the first time on a low quality cassette recording the band made. He couldn't make out much of the song because it was so distorted. When the band started rehearsing it in the studio, however, Vig heard the potential in the song. He made sure it was the first track on the album, since it made a statement. Vig told NPR: "Even though we're not really sure what Kurt is singing about, there's something in there that you understand; the sense of frustration and alienation. To me, 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' reminds me a little bit of how Bob Dylan's songs affected people in the '60s. In a way, I feel the song affected a generation of kids in the '90s. They could relate to it."

The lines, "And we all just. Entertainers. And we're stupid. And contagious," were interpolated by Jay-Z on his 2013 song "Holy Grail." Hova's track debuted at #8 on the Hot 100 resulting in Kurt Cobain receiving his first Top 10 writing credit since this song charted.

When Nirvana was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, the surviving members performed a selection of songs with various female singers. For this song, Joan Jett joined them. The following year, Jett was inducted into the Rock Hall.

When Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones died in 1969, this song took on new meaning, as lyrics like "Our love is like our music, it's here and then it's gone" made it a fitting elegy. Mick Jagger explained: "That's Brian (Jones) playing steel guitar. We were sitting around in a circle on the floor, singing and playing, recording with open mikes. That was the last time I remember Brian really being totally involved in something that was really worth doing. He was there with everyone else. Shakermaker

The last verse of this song was written in the back of a taxi by Noel Gallagher on the way to record the song. Liam said to Noel, "We haven't actually got a last verse for this song," so Noel wrote it there and then.

This bears a strong resemblance to the 1971 New Seekers song "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing," which was featured in a famous Coke commercial. The similarity between the songs became evident when Oasis tribute band No Way Sis recorded a version of "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing" in 1996 doing their best to sound like Oasis.

The original opening lines to this song were "I'd like to teach the world to sing, in perfect harmony," but the band were forced to change the lyrics to "I'd like to be somebody else, and not know where I've been," as they didn't have permission to use these copyrighted lyrics. In early gigs, Oasis stuck with the original lyrics.

Oasis were successfully sued for unlicensed use of the song by the writers of "I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing," a 1971 song by the New Seekers that was made famous in a Coke commercial where children gather on a hilltop to sing. Noel Gallagher cited "irony" as his defense and after losing, joked, "Now we all drink Pepsi."

• With the line "Heavy Metal Thunder," this became the first popular song to use the phrase "Heavy Metal," which became a term for hard rock. William Burroughs is credited with coining the phrase, as he used it in his 1961 novel The Soft Machine, describing his character Uranian Willy as "the Heavy Metal Kid." Burroughs told The Paris Review: "I felt that heavy metal was sort of the ultimate expression of addiction, that there's something actually metallic in addiction, that the final stage reached is not so much vegetable as mineral."
• This was used in the 1969 movie Easy Rider, a counterculture classic starring Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda as bikers who ride from Los Angeles to New Orleans. Another Steppenwolf song, "The Pusher," was also used in the film.
  When the movie was in production, this was simply a placeholder, since Fonda wanted Crosby, Stills and Nash to do the soundtrack. It became clear that the song belonged in the movie, and it stayed. Partly because of it's use in Easy Rider, this has become the song most associated with motorcycles.
• This was written by Mars Bonfire, which is the stage name of Dennis Edmonton. He wasn't a member of Steppenwolf, but his brother Jerry was the band's drummer. Bonfire wrote a few other songs for Steppenwolf as well, including "Ride With Me" and "Tenderness."
  Explaining how he came up with the song, Bonfire said: "I was walking down Hollywood Boulevard one day and saw a poster in a window saying 'Born to Ride' with a picture of a motorcycle erupting out of the earth like a volcano with all this fire around it. Around this time I had just purchased my first car, a little secondhand Ford Falcon. So all this came together lyrically: the idea of the motorcycle coming out along with the freedom and joy I felt in having my first car and being able to drive myself around whenever I wanted. 'Born To Be Wild' didn't stand out initially. Even the publishers at Leeds Music didn't take it as the first or second song I gave them. They got it only because I signed as a staff writer. Luckily, it stood out for Steppenwolf. It's like a fluke rather than an achievement, though."

The song was originally titled "European Miracle."

The song lifts its opening line ("Europe had a language problem") from "I Travel," the first track on Simple Minds' 1980 Empires and Dance album.

The Scottish New Wave band were an important influence on Futurology. "I always wanted to make something I thought could live up to the best tracks of albums two, three and four by Simple Minds," vocalist James Dean Bradfield told The Guardian with a self-conscious laugh. "Your love of something is the hardest thing to transfer sometimes. It's like having a parent: you recognise them in you, the older you get. I just kept thinking, 'this has got to come out in the wash.' And it finally did."

James Dean Bradfield told Mojo magazine that when he was writing the song's music he was guided by the mood of Nicky Wire's lyrics. "Europa Geht Durch Mich marches to its own logic, " he said. "you have to go with it. Strap on the Teflon and bash the f--- out of it! I was confronted by the presence of the words, which made the music confrontational."

Pound Cake/Paris Morton Music 2

The outro to Drake's third album, Nothing Was The Same, features two penetrating verses from Jay Z on the first half of the song. The two superstar rappers previously joined forces on Hov's "Off That" from 2009's The Blueprint 3, and Drizzy's "Light Up" off 2010's Thank Me Later.

"Pound Cake" serves as a lead to the more celebratory "Paris Morton Music 2," where Drake asserts himself above all competition.

Drake's frequent producer Noah "40" Shebib told Rolling Stone that "Paris Morton Music" is exciting for the Toronto MC for a rap standpoint as he's "just getting off bars and different flows, I played it for J. Cole, on some rap buddy-buddy s--t, and he was like, 'Damn!'"

This song's refrain is a scratched-up sample of the hook from Wu-Tang's 1994 single "C.R.E.A.M." (The title stands for "Cash Rules Everything Around Me.")

Paris Morton is the female equivalent of an Aston Martin, whom Drake originally rapped about on his cut, "Paris Morton Music." Drake's verse, where he recalls the time he spent with the black model, was also included on Rick Ross' single "Aston Martin Music."

The song opens with a 35 second speech sample of the late jazzman Jimmy Smith. It was taken by the producer/DJ duo Christian Rich from "Jimmy Smith Rap," a track from his 1982 Off the Top album. Jimmy Smith's estate filed a lawsuit in April 2014 claiming Drake never got permission to use the sample, despite liner notes indicating that it had been approved.

Speaking during a CRWN interview with Hip-Hop journalist Elliott Wilson, Drake revealed that "Pound Cake" was originally recorded when he was working with Beyoncé, and Jay-Z originally penned his two verses for Magna Carta… Holy Grail. For the first time in his career, Jay sent Drake the acapellas of his pair of rhymes to use, and then Bio-1da and Noah "40" Shebib got to work on the beat.

Hova took the opportunity to stunt on Drake when he spits at the beginning of his first verse, "I had Benzes before you had braces." "I think Jay still gets his first line off there," Drake joked to MTV News. "He always takes his opportunity to remind me that he is the true big homey."

"With that said, sometimes I'll set out and have something different in mind for Jay, like, 'I wanna be in the club with Hov on this album'...but we always just end up rapping," he added. "I love rapping with that guy so much that it's tough to go in any different direction."

Drake described the song as the follow up to "Light Up," which, at the time, found Jay dropping some knowledge on his "lil bro." "This feature is part 2 to 'Light Up,' said Drake to MTV News. "A lot of the songs on this album are updates and while he was working on Magna Carta I was able to work get that song [from him]."

This samples Ellie Goulding's Halcyon track, "Don't Say a Word." Boi-1da recalled: "My producer Jordan Evans brought the Ellie Goulding sample to me and I was like, 'this is perfect.' Nothing sounds better than Ellie Goulding singing in the background while Jay Z is rapping."

Drake originally planned to release two versions of Nothing Was the Same. The second version that we never got to hear was meant to play in the reverse order starting with "Pound Cake." "It was a cool, different listening experience," Drake told Vibe magazine. "We never brought it into fruition; I think it was some iTunes [issue] or something like that."

Heresy

This song is about the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the fall of communism in Germany, ending 40 years of dictatorial Communist rule. The song also address the fall of communism in Moscow (Russia) and details the waste of time that pasted before freedom was brought to these places, the joy of democracy and emotions of the times.

In the February 1994 issue of Modern Drummer, Neil Peart said he heard the drum pattern when he was in Togo: "I was laying on a rooftop one night and heard two drummers playing in the next valley, and the rhythm stuck in my head. When we started working on the song I realized that beat would complement it well."

Geddy Lee (from the RTB CD Launch radio broadcast): "It's that horrible and wonderful moment all mixed into one when somebody realizes that they've been, you know, had their freedom removed for so many years, and they finally get it back. Saw Red

No Doubt lead singer Gwen Stefani sang on this, making it into a duet running 1:57; she used to go out with Sublime lead singer Brad Nowell. On the Sublime: Stories, Tales, Lies & Exaggerations DVD, Stefani explained that Nowell wrote this in the studio and did his vocal in one take. (thanks, Vanessa - Covina, CA)

This was recorded before either Sublime or No Doubt were famous. Both groups rose to fame in the mid-'90s on the Southern California punk scene that also featured Green Day and the Offspring and was fathered by the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

This is based on a popular Jamaican song called "She's Mine" by the dancehall singer Barrington Levy. Sublime recorded it as a tribute to Levy, changing the lyrics but keeping the music pretty much intact. Robbin' The Hood was Sublime's second album, released on their independent label, Skunk Records. This song was a hit with college radio, but Sublime didn't break through to the mainstream until their next (self-titled) album, which was released in 1996 after they signed with MCA Records.

This was U2's first #1 hit in the US. It was the first U2 single to do better in America than in England.

The lyrics are about relationships, but can be interpreted many ways. They were written by Bono, who wanted to write a love song that dealt with real issues in relationships.

In 1987 Bono explained that everybody in the group knows what the line "And you give yourself away" means: "It's about how I feel in U2 at times - exposed. The Edge used a distortion device called an "Infinite Guitar" to create the wail. It was invented by Michael Brook, who The Edge worked with on the soundtrack for The Captive. Brook created the Infinite Guitar by replacing the pickup on a guitar with a magnetic device that vibrates the strings. Co-producer Daniel Lanois told Mojo magazine January 2008 about the recording of this song: "'For 'With Or Without You' we had the rhythm and the chords then we were testing Michael Brook's Infinite Guitar Invention. I asked Edge just to play a little something with it. He did two takes and those are the ones in the ultimate mix of 'With Or Without You.' Beautiful sounds, stratospheric."

Wild Angels Song Chart

This Matraca Berg, Gary Harrison and Harry Stinson penned cut was released on November 20, 1995 as the second single from McBride's album of the same name. The song topped the country chart, giving McBride her first ever #1.

The song is about a female deciding there must be "wild angels" watching over her and her man, which are keeping their love alive. Matraca Berg told The Boot the story of how the three songwriters crafted the hit. "I started it with Harry. I don't know what we were smoking that day, but it was a very lofty, kind of poetic, lyric. I heard it [recently] and thought, 'What was I thinking?'"

"We demoed it, and every time Pat [Higdon, my publisher] would play it for somebody, they would say, 'What does this mean'" I knew that the lyric was off, but they loved the music, they loved the title."

Matraca Berg and Harry Stinson brought in Gary Harrison for the rewrite. "It was just so simple," said Berg. "[He said], "You say, 'Wild angels, wild angels' — what's this other thing, 'Blue horses'?" And after we got that figured out, Martina snatched it up."

"Gary gave me an epiphany with that song," she added: "Get them a good, kick-ass chorus, and you can write whatever you want to in the verses."

That's McBride's daughter, Delaney, who was born in December 1994, that can be heard laughing in the song's intro.

Thom Oliphant directed the music video, which finds McBride singing on top of the Clock Tower Building in Brooklyn, New York, while an angel touches the lives of people below. The concept and black-and-white visuals were inspired by the 1987 Wim Wenders film Wings of Desire, about an angel who falls in love with a human woman.

The shoot was a precarious one, as Oliphant explained to Songfacts : "Up there, it's pretty dangerous. There's nothing to keep you from stepping off the side of the building. For every shot of somebody, from Martina sitting on the side to the extras, there's three guys with safety harnesses crouched behind the ledge making sure that those people are attached to a bungee cord."

He would return to the location the following year to shoot Amy Grant's "Takes a Little Time" video.

This was the first ever million seller by a female soloist in Britain and the biggest selling single in UK in 1985. It held the record for the largest-selling single ever by a woman until Whitney Houston's 1992 smash "I Will Always Love You." At the time it held the record for the longest ever climb to no 1 in UK- 16 weeks.

Rush wrote this song along with Gunther Mende, Candy DeRouge and Mary Susan Applegate. The producer and songwriter David Foster, who helped her on her road to stardom, arranged the piece. The song was recorded in Germany, where Jennifer had relocated.

In the US Rush's version reached #57 but it was later a hit for Laura Branigan (#26 in 1987) and Celine Dion (#1 in 1994 and also #4 in the UK). A rival version by Australian duo Air Supply released the same time peaked at #68 on the Hot 100.

Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson chose this for their first dance at their 1986 wedding. Many less famous couples did as well.

Huey Lewis & The News and Frankie Goes To Hollywood also had Top-10 UK hits in 1985 with different songs called "The Power Of Love."

New Yorker Jennifer Rush (real name Heidi Stern) is the daughter of opera singer Maurice Stern. This was her first hit in the UK. Her only other UK top 20 hit was her follow up "Ring Of Ice," which reached #14. In 1987 she made the US top 40 with a duet with Elton John entitled "Flames Of Paradise."
